Serene BEAUTY I

n 1989, the House of Harry Winston entered the world of watchmaking with its now iconic Premier Collection and a promise to honor the legacy of its founder by creating exceptional watches that tell time in unique and creative ways. Now, more than a quarter of a century later, Harry Winston honors that commitment in a new and exciting way with the Premier Moon Phase 36mm, an enchanting timepiece that marries the beauty of mother of pearl with the sophistication of a moon phase complication. The watch’s face captures the serene beauty of the celestial sky with a mesmerizing moon that appears to travel across the horizon, before finding its way behind a white mother-of-pearl design, signifying the end of the lunar cycle. Furthermore, the lunar cycle, hours, minutes and date display are expertly powered by the HW5201 quartz movement, exclusive to Harry Winston. In order to create the timepiece’s graceful dial, two carefully selected and beautifully contrasting shades of mother of pearl were used. The first, a pure white, alludes to daylight, while the second, a pearl blue, recalls the deep color of the evening sky. Gold cabochon minute markers bring the dial to vibrant life, while the emerald-shaped logo—the hallmark of Harry Winston—is perfectly placed at 12 o’clock. And, as befitting a Harry Winston watch, 18 brilliantcut diamonds rest at 6 o’clock, while 12 brilliant-cut diamonds line the perimeter, serving as hour markers. In total, the timepiece features 2.58 carats of the world’s most magnificent diamonds, perfectly complemented by the 36mm 18K rose gold case and the iridescent accents on the white alligator strap.

FACES CHANGING

I

n the early 1970s, Philippe Stern was asked to assume responsibility for a new watch model that would represent his generation. As a sports enthusiast and a fierce competitor in the sailing regattas on Lake Geneva, he envisioned a casual timepiece imbued with the elegance of the Patek Philippe style. What Stern had learned while observing the computer world soon manifested itself in the watch industry as well: an ever-faster and more radical cycle of quantum leaps in technical developments would be required from this point on. Expectations ran high—and he did not disappoint. The resulting watch was the Nautilus Ref 3700/1A, launched in 1976 with the slogan: “One of the world’s most expensive watches is made of steel.” Its sleek simplicity delighted watch connoisseurs, and its water resistance to 120 meters was a sensation at the time. The watch was to be Stern’s journeyman’s piece; it turned into a masterpiece. In 1977, Philippe Stern was appointed CEO of Patek Philippe. Under his leadership and that of his son, current Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern, the manufacture has continued to develop and release ever-more impressive Nautilus styles over the past four decades.

ARPELS

VAN CLEEF

& Bouton d’or I

nspired by its rich heritage, the Maison of Van Cleef & Arpels has unveiled a brand-new jewelry collection, Bouton d’or. For these dazzling pieces, diamonds, gold and hard stones come together in bold creations that have their origins in the paillette motif that has been featured by the legendary company for decades. The five-piece collection, available in two distinctly feminine styles, includes a necklace that hugs the neckline, a subtly asymmetric bracelet, earrings that seem to dance with each movement of the body, a three-dimensional ring and a generous pendant, all composed of paillettes with diamonds at their centers. In one set, pink gold gently magnifies the delicate overtones of mother of pearl and the warm hue of carnelian, while in a more contrasted pairing, yellow gold accentuates the encounter between the rich, deep black of onyx and chrysoprase, whose spring-like green suffuses this set with a luminous vitality. In choosing the stones for the collection, the Maison has been particularly attentive to the homogeneity and vivacity of their color, their luminosity (for chrysoprase) and their depth (for carnelian). Moreover, the mother of pearl offers a regular surface and a luster of the highest quality, while the diamonds are selected according to the Maison’s high standards of excellence (D, E or F for color, IF and VVS clarity). To ensure the complete harmony of each piece, the paillettes that compose it are carefully matched for color, as well as for the opacity and overtones of their materials. Once the various gold pieces have been shaped by hand, they undergo successive polishing—a particularly delicate process for the concave and convex paillettes. The glitter of the precious metal must be revealed, while carefully preserving the form of the motifs. To ensure the pieces’ suppleness and flexibility, these motifs are carefully attached together: the process calls for a precise and agile hand, since hundreds of components— up to one thousand in the case of a necklace—must be joined together. The end result is a symphony of jewelry: one that meets the Maison’s stringent criteria for quality and finish, and which will have the wearer singing a happy tune for years to come. Visit Van Cleef & Arpels at Americana Manhasset today to experience the Maison’s jeweled masterworks.

AMERICANA Nicola Bulgari’s taste for luxury

A

t a beautiful 20-acre compound in rural Allentown, Pennsylvania, Bulgari chairman Nicola Bulgari has amassed an impressive collection of vintage American cars. Buicks are the most prevalent, but Packards, Chryslers, Oldsmobiles and more round out the mix. The common denominator is that all were attainable and affordable at the time they were produced; remarkably, they still run and are all driven regularly by brothers Keith and Kris Flickinger, who restore and manage the collection. Bulgari believes that these well-preserved machines are not to be appreciated as inanimate art objects, but meant to serve their original purpose. About five times a year, he comes to the U.S. to stay in his apartment within one of the museum’s seven hangars, always driving as many cars as his time will allow. As a boy coming of age in Rome, Bulgari was a fan of American films. The on-screen cars always caught his attention, as did the American autos he saw as part of the the Pope’s motorcade. In 1972, his childhood aspirations came to fruition when he purchased the first cars in what would become a collection of over 150. Formally named the NB Center for American Automotive Heritage, the facility aims to foster an awareness and appreciation for these fine machines. The Flickingers and their team can also document the origins and pedigree of any vintage car, and there is a restoration facility on the premises. The compound also features a private drive-in theater screen, where Bulgari and his guests can enjoy the cinematic classics that inspired this passion from the start.

diamonds

I

BACK TO BASICS

t’s a special day when you select one of the most important items you will ever purchase: an engagement ring for the one you love. The choices, from stones to shapes to settings, may appear endless, making the decision overwhelming. Fortunately, we have a team of GIA Graduate Gemologists waiting in store with the knowledge to help guide you. We caught up with Guy Spaulding, who acquires diamonds and colored stones for London Jewelers and has some wisdom to impart. Any diamond educator will probably begin with the Four Cs—color, clarity, cut and carat weight—diamond grading guidelines created by Gemological Institute of America. But Spaulding’s extensive knowledge of diamonds allows him to intelligently expand on each criteria. He also believes the Four Cs shouldn’t be the only deciding factors. “I always tell my customers to select a diamond as they chose their partner. You should feel about your diamond like you felt the first time you saw her (or him),” says Spaulding. “Although all diamonds are attractive, it’s the ‘wow’ factor that really counts. One of my favorite techniques is to throw a few diamonds on a tray and see what immediately catches the customer’s eye.” That's not to say the Four Cs shouldn't be carefully considered. Start with cut, notes Spaulding, since it is perhaps the most personal choice a buyer can make. "Round diamonds continue to be the most popular, but different cuts look better on different hands. Longer features sometimes call for a longer shape like an oval, while shorter hands are a good fit for round or square diamonds. A variety of fancy shapes can be tailored to your partner’s unique nature. Just like shoes, sometimes you have to try them all on to find out what you feel best wearing."

The color scale for non-colored diamonds runs from D (the rarest) to Z (light yellow), with most buyers preferring something in the higher ranges. D, E and F are all colorless, the biggest difference being the degree of transparency in the stone. G, H, I and J are considered near colorless, which means all diamonds from D to J are considered white. “It's important to note that any diamond from D to Z in color grade, when cut the same, will sparkle equally. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I feel what's most important is the reflection of light the stone gives back, which many people equate with how sparkly the diamond is. This reflective quality is most achievable in round diamonds, which can give you 100 percent light return." The clarity scale runs from flawless to VVS (minute inclusions), VS (minor inclusions), to SI (noticeable inclusions), to I (obvious inclusions, visible to the unaided eye). All grades from flawless to SI require magnification for inclusions to be visible. Spaulding points out that "higher clarity doesn't always make a stone more beautiful, but it does make it more rare. While many people focus solely on the investment value of a diamond, seeking out only the highest grades, the choices we present to our customers are amongst the top one percent of the diamonds in the world. This means that each diamond we carry has been hand-selected to present the perfect balance of beauty, accuracy in grading, and value." Finally, there’s the carat factor. While lots of people get caught up in the “bigger is better” mentality, Spaulding cautions that “any diamond over one carat is actually rare. Again, size is a personal decision. And the bottom line remains that every diamond, no matter its size, shape, clarity or color, is as unique as the person who is wearing it.” Visit London Jewelers to experience our world-class selction and learn more about choosing your perfect diamond.

ROBERTO COIN LANDS AT OCULUS R

oberto Coin is not only one of Italy’s leading jewelry designers, he’s one of the most popular designers in the United States. So it’s no surprise that his newest boutique—opened in partnership with London Jewelers and located inside NYC’s recently opened Oculus structure at the Westfield World Trade Center—has already attracted a throng of thrilled fans and collectors. Indeed, as downtown Manhattan transforms itself into one of the city’s premier destinations for luxury shopping, this new boutique has become the ideal spot to showcase Coin’s innovative designs, including such collections as Princess Flower, Carnaby Street and Symphony. Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Santiago Calatrava, whose famed work includes Calgary’s Peace Bridge and Athens’ Olympic Centre, the Oculus was designed to represent a winged dove being released from a child’s hand. Appropriately, Coin created Roberto Coin Doves to commemorate 1,200 first responders and their families in honor of the boutique opening its doors this past summer. “The Doves are a symbol of peace and freedom,” explains Coin. “Each of my jewels has a special meaning that includes the signature of the hidden ruby. Many years ago, I learned that according to an ancient legend, the ruby, when worn in contact with the skin, could provide peace, prosperity and happiness. In the Dove creations, the ruby has a very special significance. I hope that those people who wear the Doves will remember the past but also imagine a peaceful future.” The future looks very bright for this new shop, as well. “We are excited about our continued expansion of our brand with another boutique opening,” says Peter Webster, co-owner and president of Roberto Coin Inc. “In addition, collaborating with some of the most well-respected local retail partners, such as London Jewelers, broadens our relationships with the local community and future Roberto Coin customers in addition to our already loyal clientele.” “I have known Roberto Coin for over 30 years,” adds Mark Udell, CEO of London Jewelers. “We are thrilled to partner with them for their first boutique in Manhattan. Since we’ve had great success together in other locations, this store at Westfield World Trade Center made perfect sense.” Visit Roberto Coin at Westfield World Trade Center, Oculus Main Level, C2, T: 212-287-1299.

safeguarding

APPRAISALS 101 Mark Reyman, Certified Gemologist Appraiser at

LONDON JEWELERS, explains how he appraises valuable items, why appraisals are done, and which pieces should be assessed. What is an appraisal? An appraisal is a document that describes an item in detail and places a value on it. For example, if you're looking to have a diamond ring appraised (one of the most common items that we appraise), we provide a thorough description of the center stone: dimensions, weight, cut, clarity grade and color grade. We also measure any side stones and test to see what kind of metal the setting is made of. At London Jewelers, it's important to us that we are available to answer any questions our customers may have during the appraisal process, especially because we are helping them document their most cherished valuables. I like to walk a

customer through the appraisal as I take all measurements and photographs. Before our customer leaves the appointment, I provide them with a tentative verbal evaluation, and follow up a few days later with a formal appraisal. Why is it important to have valuables appraised? In order to properly insure your valuables you need to supply formal documentation stating the value of your piece(s). That's where I come in. Perhaps you are newly engaged or perhaps you've recently inherited a cherished family heirloom that you don't know much about. In either case, it's important to have the item(s) appraised so that you can properly insure it at its current market value. I also like to talk with the customer about what attributes make the piece(s) they've brought in so valuable. Often when someone brings in an estate piece they'll say to me, "I've inherited this. What the heck is it?" What types of items should be appraised? I usually advise people to have items that are $800 and above appraised. That way they have formal documentation in case something happens. Most people’s insurance deductibles are around that point now. Jewelry is the most common category—diamond rings, pieces with colored stones—but I also work with items like silver, American coins and bills, and watches. I do get the odd piece sometimes. I used to do work for a lady who had an antiques store. She once had a silver ring with a strange-looking stone: ovalish, a little iridescent, like oil on water…and as I pulled the stone up, six legs came out! I did research and found out it was an Egyptian scarab beetle. That was definitely a first for me! How often should valuables be appraised? Every five years or so. It depends, but in a lot of cases people have insurance policies that automatically increase the item’s value—maybe 2 percent every year—to keep up with the market. Sometimes that kind of constant increase isn’t accurate, so after 10 years you could be paying for insurance on a diamond that is significantly over-appraised. Schedule your appraisal today by calling 516-918-4200.

Desperately Seeking

DAYTONA But for right now, I want, I need, I crave, I simply must have the new Rolex Daytona with black dial and ceramic bezel. Ever since the extreme buzz surrounding its release at the Baselworld Watch Fair in March, I’ve been relentless in trying to figure out how to acquire this elusive prize. Most say there’s a five-year wait list... I can’t wait five weeks, let alone five years! The Daytona was the Rolex model first given out to winners at the Rolex 24 at Daytona Speedway. At some point in time, Paul Newman (himself a motorsports enthusiast and race car driver) started wearing it, and from then on, watch aficionados, collectors and guys in the know wanted nothing else. Since its launch in the 1960s, the watch has gone through a number of redesigns, all of which are now collector’s items that have appreciated significantly in value. The modern Daytona as we know it was released in the late 1980s; at that time, Rolex outsourced the movement to Zenith. In 2000, Rolex developed the capability to make the chronograph movement in house. They also made small cosmetic changes to the face of the watch (on the black dial, the sub-dials became silver rather than white; on the white dial, the sub-dials were also silver rather than black). For either dial option, purchasing a Rolex Daytona has become a dance of persuasion, persistence and finesse, convincing dealers to sell you one out of the maybe two or three watches they’ve been allotted. The release this year of the new stainless steel Daytona is the first significant design change since the ’80s. The bezel is now made of Cerachrom material that’s virtually scratch-resistant to ensure longevity. The sub-dials on the white dial are now black rather than silver, offering a bold contrast recalling Paul Newman’s iconic timepiece of yesteryear. Everyone wants one. All are told to put their names on the list. It’s an undisclosed list with obscure criteria: Are you famous? Are you quasifamous? Will you be photographed in the watch? With whom? People are determined to figure this out. I’ve been on the hunt, calling dealers throughout the Tri-State area as well as across the country. Since Rolex authorized dealers are not permitted to ship out of state, a buyer needs to purchase in person. I’ve researched the home state of my alma mater (Michigan) discovering cities I didn’t know existed (to which I’ll be traveling if they call me!). My wife is Romanian and fluent in the language; she’s phoned her home country and I believe I’m top of the list in Bucharest. Yesterday, my father and I attended a Rolex Daytona event. We tried on the watch and I’m more committed than ever to finding it. I’m on their wait list, but they were not all that encouraging. Leaving the event, I texted my wife: “Isn’t it time you visit your family in Romania?” (Editor’s note: Weber wrote this essay hoping it would move him up on the list. Sorry, but you’ll have to wait in line with the rest of us!)

What one young business exec wouldn’t do for the newest ROLEX… BY JARROD WEBER

M

y first recollection of a Rolex Daytona was this beautiful stainless steel work of art on my father’s wrist. Although I was too tied up with school, sports and dating to truly focus on watches, I couldn’t help but admire the pure beauty of this magnificent timepiece. Never since have I seen a watch I admired as much. So of course I felt tremendous joy when, upon graduating law school, my parents placed two green boxes with gold crown logos on our kitchen table. “Mom and I are so proud of you,” my dad said, somewhat choked up. “We think you’ve earned your first Rolex.” He then opened both boxes: in the first was a brand new Rolex Daytona, the other contained the Daytona I’d always admired on his wrist. He asked which I wanted. I immediately chose my father’s for its sentimental value. I can’t think of any possession I’ve ever had or will ever have that means more to me than that Daytona. I’m sure that at the right time, my son will acquire this priceless family keepsake.

BATTERY CHARGED 111 Murray Street

Douglas Elliman’s HOLLY PARKER on what’s hot in downtown digs.

56 Leonard Street

A

ccording to real estate broker Holly Parker, the swell of interest in residential properties in Battery Park City and the Financial District is long overdue. “When the Ritz went down there 20 years ago, I thought, ‘Wow, this is going take off. It’s so beautiful in the summertime; this is the area that will become sought after for New Yorkers.’” But, she admits, it lacked an anchor. There weren’t enough places to shop, restaurants or grocery stores. “Those are the things that will make or break a neighborhood. And now you have all of them!” With the opening of Westfield World Trade Center and Brookfield Place, in addition to the beautiful parks, promenades and water views, the downtown area now offers a high-quality standard of living. “Whether you’re a family who needs to pop next-door and grab some takeout or a couple who wants to sit down and dine, the neighborhood addresses the needs of all types of people. There are bars, places to exercise, as well as access to Citi Bikes and lots of subway lines,” says Parker. And the exciting news is that it’s only going to get better. “Some other neighborhoods have gotten very congested and hectic,” says Parker, “so to be able to come home to a neighborhood with all these options for outdoor living and relaxation at your fingertips is really special.” Wall Street bonuses hit in January/February, so the market usually heats up in early spring and peaks around April/May. Parker says New York City is currently between being a buyers’ and a sellers’ market, “leaning toward the buyer in that we have more inventory and a lot of choices.” Her top picks in the area range from 56 Leonard and 111 Murray to River Terrace and the tony Four Seasons. “They’re all at different price points, but all spectacular.” Prices in the neighborhood start at around $2,200 per square foot and can go upwards of $3,000 pretty quickly. “You want to make a great investment, but also be able to enjoy it while you’re living there,” advises Parker, “and this neighborhood is really special right now; you can enjoy it in real time.”

DOWNTOWN

SCENE

The phrase “New York art scene” calls to mind Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood and famed uptown museums like MoMA and the Met. But downtown NYC is a bustling and growing culture haven in its own right, with big names and small boutiques that offer unique exhibits through the spring. Here are four can’t-miss downtown galleries and museums. jrpbrj=lc=`efkbpb=fk=^jbof`^= EONR=`bkqob=pqobbqF MOCA’s fall exhibition, which runs through March 26, 2017, explores the delicate balance of flavors that comprise Chinese cooking and Chinese life. Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Spicy: Stories of Chinese Food and Identity in America delves into this theme through the personal stories and oral histories of 33 Chinese and Asian-American chefs, including Danny Bowien and Cecilia Chiang. The chefs—as well as 18 different regional cooking styles—are represented through unique ceramic sculptures on a large-scale dining room table, designed to challenge how Chinese food is defined and interpreted.

tefqkbv=jrpbrj=lc=^jbof`^k=^oq= EVV=d^kpbslloq=pqobbqF The Whitney’s long-in-the-works move to the Meatpacking District was finally completed in 2015, with a re-opening on May 1 at the new 200,000-square-foot building overlooking the Hudson River. At three times the size of the museum’s previous building, there’s much more gallery space to display the Whitney’s trademark exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. The current installation, which runs through mid-February, is Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney’s Collection. Culled entirely from the Whitney's permanent collection, the more than 300 works (by more than 200 artists) range from 1900 to the present day.

qeb=phvp`o^mbo=jrpbrj= EPV=_^qqbov=mi^`bF

qeb=ao^tfkd=`bkqbo EPR=tllpqbo=pqobbqF

Nestled near some of New York’s most impressive skyscrapers, including One World Trade Center, this museum is devoted to the study and chronicling of highrise buildings in New York, exploring both the city’s architectural heritage and the historical forces that have shaped its skyline. Permanent exhibits include an examination of the original World Trade Center and its destruction on 9/11, as well as two carved wooden “mini-models” of a richly detailed downtown and midtown Manhattan.

Poetry need not be purely word art. From January 20 to March 19, 2017, The Drawing Center will present a group of visual works by poet Jackson Mac Low. Some of these “drawn poems” are meant to be performed, with Mac Low writing on graph paper with visual cues for silence, spoken letters and musical notes. Other works include Mac Low’s Drawing-Asymmetry series, which highlights the visual and aural qualities of words.

CONVENTION

n 1874, Georges-Edouard Piaget set up his first workshop in the family farmhouse in La Côte-auxFées and devoted himself to producing highprecision movements. In 1979, Piaget created an iconic timepiece named Piaget Polo, which is still beloved by watch wearers and collectors today. Now, in 2016, the legendary maison has gone one step further and developed the Piaget Polo S, a timepiece for a new generation: a generation of game changers. Like its predecessor, the Piaget Polo S expresses the relation of shapes that is at the heart of the Piaget DNA. Yet the Polo S is the perfect watch for those who challenge convention because, for this exceptional occasion, Piaget has housed an automatic precision movement in a watch of stainless steel. Featuring an ingenious shape-withinshape that is Piaget’s distinctive hallmark, the Piaget Polo S displays the unique association of a cushion-shaped dial within a round 42mm case. The automatic 1160 movement discreetly reveals its beauty through a sapphire case back, while a bracelet of meticulously handassembled links alternates between a polished and a satin finish. The

automatic Piaget Polo S is available with a blue, silvered or slate-gray dial, completing the extraordinary experience. (The Piaget Polo S Chronograph, equipped with the 1160P movement, is also available.) In recognition of their exceptional talent, passion and impact on the world, Piaget has selected nine game changers to wear the Piaget Polo S and to be friends of the maison for their countries: Canadianborn actor Ryan Reynolds (who is the watch’s international brand ambassador); British businessman and polo player Malcolm Borwick; Swiss novelist Joël Dicker; Chinese actor and singer Hu Ge; Belgian tennis player David Goffin; the United Arab Emirates’ artist and businessman Mohammed Sultan Al Habtoor; French chef Jean-François Piège; American actor Michael B. Jordan; and Japanese singer and actor Miyavi. By choosing Piaget, each of these men show with elegance and distinction that they play a different game, are ready to rewrite the rules, and that they truly embody the spirit and ethos of this remarkable watch. Experience Piaget Polo S at the Watch Salon at London Jewelers, Americana Manhasset.

INNER DRIVE

The Drive de CARTIER celebrates strength and sophistication.

I

nstinct, independence, elegance, passion: these are the qualities of the man who wears the new Drive de Cartier timepiece. This man appreciates the balance between the dimensions of the watch’s cushion-shaped case and its taut linear design. Its case, in pink gold or steel, is fitted with a black, gray or white guilloché dial marked by Roman numerals punctuated with sword-shaped hands. The transparent case back reveals the Manufacture movement 1904 MC, available in two versions: hours, minutes, small seconds and date for the 1904-PS MC; and second time zone, day/night indicator, large date and small seconds for the 1904-FU MC. The finishes are just as exacting: textured satin at the sides with polished surfaces for the top and bottom. The former is intended to magnify the volume, the latter to hone it. As always, great attention has been paid to the calibre. The calibre 1904 MC, created in 2010, was among the first movements conceived, developed and assembled by the Cartier Manufacture. The care lavished on the calibre 1904 MC, with refined finishes such as the polished screw-heads and the Côtes de Genève decoration on the bridges and the oscillating weight, attests to the high standards of quality to which Cartier holds its movements. It has been designed to maintain perfect chronometric stability, harnessing a double barrel system to ensure consistency of the mainspring torque over a long period. The calibre 1904-FU MC, created in 2014, combines a retrograde second time zone display, a day/night indicator, a large date and small seconds counter, with the complications coordinated directly by the crown. This movement equips the small complication model of the Drive de Cartier watch. The Drive de Cartier watch is also available in a Fine Watchmaking version, with a flying tourbillon 9452 MC, a mechanical movement with manual winding, certified “Poinçon de Genève.” With the patterning of the guilloché dial resembling the design of a radiator grill, the domed crystal, counter at 6 o’clock and the winding crown shaped like a bolt, this version indisputably alludes to the motor car. Whichever version of the Drive de Cartier a man chooses to wear, he can be sure he has acquired a truly special timepiece. And whoever observes him can be sure they are looking at a very special man. Experience Drive de Cartier at Cartier, Americana Manhasset, 516-627-3200.

SPARKLING DIVERSIONS

FRANCIACORTA, Italy’s “secret” sparkling wine.

I

n recent years, Americans have developed a renewed passion for sparkling wines beyond Champagne. While Italy is best known for Prosecco, Lambrusco and BY ROBERT HAYNES-PETERSON Moscato, people are now discovering Franciacorta, a more complex sibling. Made in the metodo classico (or “Champagne method”), where secondary fermentation—the bubble part—occurs in the bottle rather than in steel tanks, bottles age at least 25 months for non-vintage and at least 37 months for vintage or millesimato wines before they are released. The Franciacorta DOCG (a region designated for control and quality of production) lies in Lombardy at the base of the Alps in northern Italy. Elegant, rustic vineyards stand on low slopes and broad valleys below daunting dolomitic Alpine peaks. Sparse trees, gravelly limestone soils and crystal clear lakes reflect the (relatively) cool weather conditions perfect for making bright, tart bubblies commonly evoking hints of pear, papaya, grapefruit and apple. “Franciacorta gives much of the same wonderment of brioche and hazelnut aromas as Champagne, but with refreshing hints of citrus, and a persistent effervescence,” notes wine educator Keith Beavers of VinePair.com. Beavers was part of a nationwide series of “Bubble Boot Camp” seminars this year organized by CitySip.com, of which one was a multi-day “Fun With Franciacorta” event in New York City. Though Italians and Romans have been making still wines in this part of Lombardy for millennia, sparkling wine is a newcomer: winemaker Franco Ziliani produced the first 3,000 bottles in 1961 while working for Count Guido Berlucchi (credited with dubbing wine “Franciacorta” for the first time). The appellation achieved DOC status in 1967 and DOCG in 1995. Today a number of stellar brands are available, notably Bellavista, Ca’ del Bosco and Berlucchi. Many wine writers and sommeliers consider Franciacorta Italy’s best sparkling wine and the one that, like Champagne, can cellar for years or decades. “With a total production that is only 1/20th of the production of Champagne and 1/30th of the production of Prosecco, Franciacorta will continue to focus on a natural approach to the winemaking process, and quality over quantity,” says Giulio Galli, managing director of TMT USA, which imports Bellavista. “We see an evolution where sparkling wines are no longer relegated to celebratory occasions, but are consumed in many different situations by a growing number of people.” Not everything elegant needs cost an arm and a leg: most Franciacortas are nonvintage, ranging between $15 and $35. But if it’s luxury expressions you seek, you have options. The Ca’ del Bosco Annamaria Cleminti Rosé ($100) is made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes from 30-plus-year-old vines, with all steps of vinification and aging taking place in oak casks. And last year, Bellavista released a limited magnum opus (in magnum bottles) called Meraviglioso. The blend of six premium vintages from over the past 30 years will run you between $500 and $800 a bottle—if you can find one.

s founder and president of Explore Inc., acclaimed as a top African travel specialist by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure, Cherri Briggs has spent decades developing unique itineraries for sophisticated lovers of the natural world in an effort to raise awareness about conservation issues of critical importance to the continent. “Our job is to get people over there for a great experience, and then also show them why conservation efforts are urgent and how we can help,” she explains. Briggs is on the Botswana Tourism Board, has talked personally with its president and vice president on conservation issues, and has brought important ambassadors like Uma Thurman and Chef Eric Ripert to the cause. A fundraiser last year at Ripert’s Le Bernardin is where Mark and Candy Udell, CEO and president of London Jewelers, first learned about Explore Inc. and the important work being done on behalf of rhinos. At the event, the Udells won a trip from Wilderness Safaris facilitated by Explore Inc., and this past April they were able to experience Botswana’s vast beauty for themselves. They learned that the country is a safe-haven for rhinos from South Africa, where one is killed by poachers every seven hours. Though rhino horn has no real therapeutic value, its mythological healing properties have caused its price and demand to skyrocket. Extinction is inevitable at the current rate of poaching, so urgent action is required. “There has been a concerted effort to get rhinos out of South Africa and up to Botswana, which has a really strong protection force and conservation laws fully backed by the president. It costs about $50,000 to buy and move a rhino, so while we love to generate awareness, it’s also vitally important to raise funds.” To learn more or donate to this important cause, visit rhinoswithoutborders.com or wildernesstrust.com.

SAFE

or cinephiles, the phrase “jewelry insurance” may conjure up scenes of Cary Grant as a French Riviera cat burglar in To Catch a Thief, trading quips with the austere agent from Lloyd’s of London. In fact, insuring precious gems may be a tad less glamorous, but certainly a necessity for nearly everyone—not just wealthy dowagers showing off their jewels around a roulette table. It starts when a man decides he’s ready to propose to his sweetheart. From the moment he leaves the jeweler he should have a policy in place covering the cherished engagement ring—even before he plans his elaborate proposal scenario involving the bottom of a Champagne glass or a golf hole. “Ideally you would receive an appraisal and insure an engagement ring right when you purchase it,” says Trina Woldt, VP and chief marketing officer of Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, one of the oldest in the business. Most jewelry insurance claims are not due to theft but loss, “which includes accidental loss and mysterious disappearance,” she explains. “That could be anything from the dog eating it to having it fall from cold fingers while shoveling snow. And you’d be surprised how many people lose their rings on their honeymoon because they’re not used to wearing a ring and forget that fingers shrink in water.” And on the off chance that a dashing cat burglar does enter your home, be advised that your homeowner’s policy might not provide the ideal coverage. It’s also important to note that filing a jewelry claim under your homeowner’s might cause your premium to increase dramatically. Jeweler’s Mutual plans are comprehensive and cover any kind of loss or damage. Its policies offer to repair or replace a lost item through the jeweler of your choice. In general, specialty jewelry insurance costs about 1 to 2 percent of the value of an item per year, so a $10,000 ring would only cost

$100 to $150 per year to insure. “It’s a really affordable way to safeguard items that have both monetary and emotional value,” says Woldt. Deductibles can be as low as zero. (Watch insurance is its own category, but operates identically.) To decide whether you need it for an engagement ring, Grandma’s pearls, or other items, look at each of them and stop to evaluate your instinctive emotional reaction to finding out that they’ve gone missing. The stronger the emotional reaction, the more reason to insure. For those who want even more peace of mind and are more worried about theft than loss, there’s the option of acquiring a safe in addition to insurance. New York-based Empire Safe is a family business in operation since 1904, catering to both businesses and residences. Empire Safe’s products range in price from $2,500 to $35,000, and are recommended for residences with $100,000 worth of jewelry or more. Once again, cinephiles with vivid imaginations are probably picturing stealthy thieves with high-tech equipment trying to pick a lock. In truth, what a thief really wants to do is either break open your safe or move it, so avoid an inexpensive one. “Ninety-nine percent of people selling safes don’t deal with high-end clients,” says Empire Safe president Richard Krasilovsky. “They’re selling safes that can be opened with common tools in the house.” The primary deterrent is weight. Empire Safe designs apartment safes that weigh 500 pounds and are secured to the floor. “They’re strong and heavy and the objective is to intimidate the burglar so he’ll go to shop elsewhere.” In houses, a ground-floor safe can weigh over 1,000 pounds, come armor-plated on all sides, and offer fire protection as an added bonus. Because when it comes to your valued keepsakes, do you really want to take chances?

ELEVATE The American

THE EVERYDAY

Lisa Phillips Frankel and her daughter, Danielle Frankel Nemiroff, bring inspiration and experience from two different generations to their work, giving the Phillips House brand a unique edge: the ability to offer the top everyday fine jewelry in the world that appeals to all ages and lifestyles. From the beginning, the designers have sought to innovate, first by creating the perfect everyday diamond disc (Infinity), then perfecting the modern, iconic gold bracelet (Love Always). The newest innovation from Phillips House, its Revolution collection, is just that: a true revolution in concept and design that gives women the ability to wear their jewelry in multiple ways. With its patent-pending design, Phillips House has created the first-ever versatile piece that looks beautiful and authentic individually as a necklace and as a ring. The brand has also recently introduced its Hero collection, all about empowering the woman. The eight-sided “hero symbol signifies eight different sides that come together to make a woman who she is. Each woman has her own unique set of sides, representing her roles in life (mother, friend), overcoming challenges (survivor), or anything in between (fashionista, ballerina). The true heroines in our lives may not always get the recognition they deserve, so the Hero collection is aimed at celebrating what makes her special. And like all Phillips House designs, it elevates the everyday into something extraordinary.

The unique shopping destinations blend the latest technological and stylistic innovations in jewelry design with a creative and interactive experience, all backed by London Jewelers’ 90 years of jewelry retail expertise. Our diamond buyers carefully choose only the highest-quality stones, in-person and from trusted partners, in order to provide our customers the best of the best. We know people shop for rings in different ways, so we aim to fulfill every customer’s individual needs. Some come to us with cocktail napkin sketches and hope for a totally unique ring. Others want expert guidance in choosing from hundreds of settings and center stones. TWO by London makes all this possible. Our GIA-certified experts are here when you want them, but the welcoming environment encourages hands-on exploration. Hundreds of sample rings are at your fingertips and can be tried on without assistance. ROCK

GOD Concert booker and promoter

RON DELSENER is a living legend.

F

GETTY IMAGES

rom going to Broadway shows as a kid with his family to becoming New York chairman of Live Nation, Ron Delsener’s life has been wrapped up in live music. The native New Yorker (born in Astoria, raised in Flushing, currently splitting his time between Manhattan and East Hampton) has been a concert booker/promoter for over 50 years. In honor of his recent 80th birthday, celebrated with a lavish fete in Bridgehampton attended by Jimmy Buffet, Paul McCartney, Lorne Michaels, Jann Wenner, Mickey Drexler and other notables from across the music, fashion and media industries, we take a brief look back at his storied career. Delsener got his start in 1964, working for Forest Hills promoters to organize the landmark outdoor Beatles shows. “They arrived by helicopter for both shows and I was right there with them on the stage...It was pure pandemonium,” he remembers. He was the first to bring rock concerts to Central Park, convincing the parks commissioner that benefit shows could raise much-needed funds to renovate the then-rundown green space. The concert series ran from 1966 to 1980, and included performances from Bruce Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel, Miles Davis and many others. He was also instrumental in booking David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust Tour show at Carnegie Hall (“I had a hard job getting him in there because they said, ‘You can’t put a transvestite on the stage,’ he revealed to Billboard), and Bob Dylan’s first concert to feature a full electric set, at Forest Hills in 1965. He is most proud of bringing music to Jones Beach, calling the now-legendary venue “his baby.” During his busiest period, he was often responsible for upwards of 300 concerts per year, including full U.S. tours for Neil Young and Van Morrison. After following him for a “day in the life” piece in 1994, New York Times reporter Neill Strauss described Delsener as “magnetic and easygoing, rattling off stories about the old days and cracking jokes,” when wearing his “schmooze hat” to deal with musicians and their managers, and a serious boss and professional when managing his team. Among many honors, Delsener has been the recipient of Billboard’s Golden Circle Award and the CityParks Foundation People and Parks Award. In 2014, he was inducted to the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.

SWEET

STORY

S

arabeth’s is a name known worldwide: as a purveyor of preserves, baked goods and specialty foods; atop 16 owned and licensed restaurants in New York, Florida, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan; and on the cover of two popular cookbooks. But even fans are shocked to discover there is indeed a real Sarabeth. “They think of it as a brand, like Sara Lee or Hellmann’s,” says namesake and co-founder Sarabeth Levine. People in the food world know me and the regular restaurant customers know me, but when other people come to events and meet me they can’t believe Sarabeth is real.” Levine herself can’t believe Sarabeth’s has grown into a top name in pastries around the globe. “I kind of accidentally began the business, and everything since then has been organic. None of it was ever planned; it just happened.” The accidental beginning came in 1981, when Levine—then a dissatisfied insurance agent—offered to make her family’s beloved orange apricot marmalade for a New York City café that her now-husband Bill was helping to build. Levine made the marmalade in her apartment and brought it down to the café, where it quickly sold out. Eventually Bill sold his share in the café to another partner and the couple bought a small bakery for Levine on Amsterdam Avenue, where the Sarabeth’s journey began. It wasn’t until Levine was fact-checking her cookbook in 2008 that she discovered she was wrong about her own origin story. “I had been eating this orange apricot marmalade since I was five years old, and I was sure it was a family recipe,” she says. “I thought my aunt, who’d fled Paris when her parents couldn’t accept that she’d fallen in love with this fairhaired not-Jewish guy, carried it in her bosom from Paris when she moved to Massachusetts to be with him.” The “not-Jewish guy” ended up leaving the aunt, who moved to the Bronx with her son. A friend told the struggling woman about the marmalade recipe, explaining that it was a secret and should be used only when she couldn’t feed

How Sarabeth Levine started Sarabeth’s with a Parisian family recipe... that wasn’t.

her children. Years later, the aunt pencil-scribbled the marmalade recipe on a scrap of paper for Levine and her brother on their request. “It’s so very interesting that this is what I built the business on, and I didn’t even know until 2008 that the story I believed was totally wrong,” Levine says. Today she and Bill operate a 15,000-square-foot jam-manufacturing facility and a 4,400-square-foot wholesale bakery, café and retail shop in Manhattan’s Chelsea Market. Following the success of the existing 16 Sarabeth’s restaurants, new locations are scheduled to open in 2017 in Nagoya and Dubai, as well as a second Taiwan location. Despite the global nature of the brand, it’s the simple everyday details that Levine relishes. “Every time I walk in and see the cases full of beautiful, precise, delicious goods, I feel proud,” Levine says. “The people who we have trained really care about getting it right. I feel good about what we do, and I’ve continued to do the business out of love, not for money.” Now 73 (Bill is 84), Levine can’t help but think about the future. “I’ll keep working until I can’t do it anymore. I’d like to say it will be forever, but I know that time will come—so I want to enjoy it right now.”
