We are truly humbled by your support and we look forward to serving the Metro Detroit community for many more years to come. Best wishes for peace, love and lots of joy this season.

The Tapper Family Over the summer, we said goodbye to one of the warmest people we’ve ever known, Alla Papazian. Alla was born in Armenia and moved to the U.S. with her mother, Nella, when she was 19 years old. She joined Tapper’s at the Somerset Collection in 2010 and, over the years, her relationships with customers turned into true friendships. Alla loved helping people and she was always there when someone needed it. She adored her two beautiful daughters, Elina and Ava, and she was proud of their kindness, intelligence and sense of independence. Alla’s mother was the guide in her life, always providing love, support and keeping her grounded. Alla was a bright light that put a smile on everyone’s face. She is dearly missed and she will forever live on in our hearts.

IPPOLITA:

COOL ENOUGH TO COVET. CLASSIC ENOUGH TO KEEP.

Senso™, the newest collection from IPPOLITA, is a celebration of form and the elemental beauty of gold and silver. The collection, crafted by master artisans, implies sensuality and features organic sculptural pieces inspired by the softness of the feminine figure. Senso exemplifies an important evolution in IPPOLITA’s body imprinting technique. Born and raised in Florence, Ippolita Rostagno studied sculpture at the city’s Istituto d’Arte. She later emigrated to the U.S. and established her own dance company. After retiring from dance, she moved to New York City and began looking for another creative outlet. Drawing from her background in sculpture and human form, Rostagno began focusing on jewelry and recalled wondering: “Where’s the jewelry for real people?” She noticed there were diamond tiaras and luxury jewelry at one end, there was a lot of costume jewelry on the other end, but there wasn’t much in between for real women. It was then that Rostagno decided to create the sort of jewelry that she wanted to wear, and the IPPOLITA brand was born. Her design aesthetic is: “cool enough to covet, and classic enough to keep.” Every piece is designed for the woman who lives in the present, wants something beautiful and craves wearability. Senso is both a return to the start of IPPOLITA and a refinement of technique. “With my passion for art and sculpture, I wanted to find a way to make gold feel luxurious and rich, without losing its natural organic qualities, and so I returned to my original technique of body imprinting to create textures that were lifted from the living human form,” says Rostagno.

Ippolita Rostagno recalls wondering

“WHERE IS THE JEWELRY FOR

REAL WOMEN?”

Today, the IPPOLITA brand is featured in the finest jewelry stores across North America. Rostagno partly credits the success of IPPOLITA to the fact that more women are now buying jewelry for themselves; women want to dress for real life, with personality and style.

MEET YOUR NEW

GIFT CONCIERGE C

hoosing the perfect gift for a loved one can be challenging, but what about choosing the perfect gifts for customers and employees? With hundreds of companies offering catalogs filled with merchandise ranging from gift cards and gift baskets to branded merchandise to luxury trips, it can be tough to decide on the perfect way to reward customer loyalty and employee performance.

Towers Perrin’s Global Workforce Study found that it is incredibly important for businesses to truly understand the people that they would like to recognize and reward. Out of 452 respondents, 99% had a unique set of preferences—different from every other person in the study. The art of gift giving stems from really understanding the recipient and choosing something that appeals to them OF EMPLOYEES PREFER on an emotional level. When NON CASH AWARDS done well, it can really pay off for businesses.

65%

It can be incredibly time consuming to navigate through the thousands of options being offered by incentive merchandise companies to find something that will appeal to the tastes of a specific person or group. As a result, many businesses choose to rely on cash bonuses as the sole method of rewarding employees—but they may not get the results they expect.

Rather than providing a onesize-fits-all catalog, Tapper’s offers our clients a business gift concierge service. By working one-on-one with businesses to understand their employees and their customers, we provide gift giving recommendations that are highly customized and competitively priced. We have helped local businesses from many different industries including construction, casinos, banking and mortgage, medical, retail, and more in selecting the perfect business gifts at prices ranging from $10 to $10,000.

Many businesses wrongly assume employees are motivated only by money. However, the Incentive Marketing Association reports that 65% of employees would prefer a non cash award if the way the incentive was given and recognized was the same.

For more information, contact Vicki Briggs at vbriggs@tappers.com or (248) 865-6347 and let us help you find the perfect business gift.

THE PURSUIT OF

ABSOLUTE TOUGHNESS

B

orn at a time when watches were generally considered fragile instruments, G-SHOCK began as the dream of a young engineer who made it his mission to create “a watch that doesn’t break, even when dropped.” That engineer was Kikuo Ibe, CASIO’s head of watch design at the time. “Project Team Tough” was formed in 1981 to realize Ibe’s aspiration, though the team had just three members. They began targeting a “Triple 10” concept: 10-meter dropping shock resistance, 10-bar water resistance and a 10-year battery life. The endeavor turned out to be unimaginably difficult. Exhausted both physically and mentally after months of hard work, they began to fear that the project was approaching a dead end. It was just at this time that Ibe observed a child playing in a park. “No impact reaches the interior of a bouncing rubber ball,” he thought. This led the team to develop a watch with a hollow structure with the module suspended inside.

After more than 200 prototypes and two long years of effort, the first-ever urethane-clad, shock-resistant watch had been born, and it was called the G-SHOCK DW5000C. The new G-SHOCK acquired explosive popularity, especially among the young. Considering these young people, Ibe had another new idea: “I want them to continue wearing G-SHOCK through their adult years, too.” Repeated brainstorming sessions with the project team led to the emergence of a new concept: “A full-metal G-SHOCK to be worn by adults.” Development of this new-style G-SHOCK began in 1994.

realizing a shock-resistant full-metal structure seemed beyond reach. Unlike urethane which is shock absorbent, the metal casing would constitute a source of impact to the module itself. Faced with this extreme development challenge, the team drew on the image of an automobile’s shock-absorbent bumpers to conceive the idea of using the bezel to provide bumper protection. They also developed a structure employing the band connection section and case back to defend against shocks. In 1996, these efforts bore fruit in the form of the first-ever full-metal G-SHOCK. Its name, MRG, combined “majesty” with “reality” to suggest “genuine dignity.” Not only tough, its sophisticated looks were suited to adult tastes, and it represented the new pinnacle of the G-SHOCK line. In the years since, G-SHOCK has continued its pursuit of “Absolute Toughness” and has introduced new advancements in its watches’ structure, materials and functions. Today, all G-SHOCK watches are 200-meter water resistant, shock resistant and include many other technological advancements. From MR-G, MT-G, G-STEEL, and the Master of G series, these watches can handle conditions in any environment on Earth, from land to sea to the sky above. Focusing on the origins of toughness and seeking even-higher levels of toughness, for G-SHOCK, the challenge never ends.

Since the use of flexible urethane was a basic premise of G-SHOCK’s shock-resistant structure,

REVERSO: AN ART DECO ICON INSPIRED BY A LOVE FOR POLO

T

he Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso timepiece emanates class, boldness and elegance, and is a timeless Art Deco icon created nearly a century ago. In fact, it was created in 1931 at the request of British officers in the Indian Army who were concerned about damaging their watches during polo matches. The men were eager to find a solution that would allow them to play the game they loved while also allowing them to keep time on their wrists. It was then that Jaeger-LeCoultre birthed the idea for a case that can revolve in order to protect the dial, thus exposing only the metal back to potential shocks. Since that day, the brand has nurtured a rich history with polo. Closely bound up with the sport through history and shared values, the Maison Jaeger-LeCoultre actively supports the world of polo through a number of partnerships, such as the Palermo Polo Open in Argentina and the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup in the United Kingdom. Its ambassadors—Eduardo Novillo Astrada, Clare Mountbatten (Marchioness of Milford Haven) and Luke Tomlinson—all brilliantly demonstrate the fire that drives them on fields all over the world. The Reverso’s design continues to hold endless possibilities waiting to be discovered. With a single movement, the watch reveals another face. Each timepiece may be personalized, engraved, lacquered or enameled discreetly on the Reverso watch caseback.

REVERSO ONE DUETTO MOON

The Reverso comes in many styles and designs, all equally efficient, practical and stylish. The Reverso One, a modern take on the legendary watch, magnifies every style, be it relaxed, sophisticated or delightfully classic. Reviving the elongated shape of 1930s watch cases, the Reverso One has its finger firmly on the pulse of today’s fashion trends. This undisputed style icon elicits the same wonderment decade after decade. The strength of its pure, almost discreet lines makes the Reverso timepiece the epitome of elegance.

WATCHOUTFOR

FRANKENSTEIN

The importance of authorized watch dealers. BY CHRISTIAN CHENSVOLD

I

t’s not hard to avoid obvious knockoffs when it comes to luxury watches. Just be careful that you’re not unknowingly investing in a Frankenstein. “Frankenstein” is a new watch industry term that refers to watches that have been spliced together from some parts that are genuine and some that are counterfeit. Typically made in Asia, Frankensteins can easily fool the eye— especially of a buyer blinded by the prospect of getting a great deal. The emergence of Frankenstein watches underscores the importance of buying a fine timepiece from an authorized dealer. “When you buy a watch online, you can’t always be sure what you’re getting,” says Steve Smith, timepiece buyer for Tapper’s Diamonds and Fine Jewelry. “Saving a lot of money can feel like a big win but, if the watch has been compromised, you’ll lose.” And when you lose, you lose big, because these fakes often mimic very expensive models. A consumer spotted a $8,550 Rolex Submariner timepiece priced at a mere $800, Smith recalls. However, when the buyer sent it to the manufacturer for servicing, it never came back. Instead, they received a letter explaining that the watch had been confiscated for infringing on the brand’s trademark. The buyer has no recourse, and even a seller with 100%

positive feedback could claim he didn’t know the watch was a Frankenstein. For Smith, this all comes down to the perennial problem of not knowing a watch’s provenance when buying from an unauthorized dealer. The same thing applies for watches that are stolen. As soon as the watch is taken in for servicing, a company such as Rolex will immediately check the serial number against a database of stolen watches. If it comes up as stolen, you’ll never see it again. Authorized retailers provide a clear paper trail of a watch’s history and ensure that a watch comes with a manufacturer’s warranty or that parts are available should it need repair, and provide a trustworthy resource if the customer is dissatisfied for any reason. Tapper’s service center sees thousands of watches each year, and the main issues are attractive fakes; genuine cases with fake movements; watches that were originally genuine but have been altered with non-genuine parts; genuine watches with fake warranty papers; watches reported stolen; and finally, watches that are genuine but without proper import documentation and duties paid, which leaves them subject to confiscation.

Paparazzi Proposals

Creating Unforgettable Engagements I

magine the perfect proposal. You’ve found the perfect ring, you’re ready to finally pop the question and you have all of the details planned. Or, maybe you’ve found the ring but want some help planning the proposal and you really wish someone could be there to take photographs. Now what? Enter Paparazzi Proposals. Owner James Ambler, a former paparazzo himself, and his team take the stress out of proposals, making them fun and memorable by capturing that once-in-a-lifetime moment. Ambler works with the person proposing to plan the perfect engagement. Some hire a single photographer while others prefer to go all out with a team of photographers, multiple GoPros, drones, flowers and a live band. With all of this expertise, Paparazzi Proposals has become the only nationwide proposal photography company in the U.S. Ambler went from paparazzo to business owner in 2011, when a life-threatening illness made him rethink his career path. In 2013, Ambler took his idea to Shark Tank in order to expand his business to multiple cities. In the end, Ambler declined the sharks’ offers, yet his business has still grown 400 percent in a few short years. “All of the proposals we’ve been involved in have resulted in a ‘yes,’” Ambler says. “December and November are very busy for us. One year, Valentine’s Day was like Black Friday,” Ambler jokes. His team has helped with thousands of proposals across the country, and some internationally. Ambler boasts that “there’s no idea that we haven’t heard of, or type of proposal that we haven’t photographed.” As an expert in surprise engagement photography, Ambler approached Tapper’s to be the company’s exclusive jewelry partner in Michigan. “We have helped customers plan their perfect proposals for decades, and partnering with Paparazzi Proposals is helping us take it to the next level,” explains Howard Tapper, president of Tapper’s. Packages include a free consultation and prices start at $495. Customers who mention that they bought their rings at Tapper’s will save $50.

It is still a favored iconic model for pilots today and is the oldest mechanical chronograph still in production. In 1962, Scott Carpenter wore a Navitimer on his orbital flight aboard the Aurora 7, and it became the first space-going wrist chronograph. Other favorites among pilots are the Aerospace watch, which was launched in 1985, and the innovative Emergency watch with a built-in transmitter that was originally introduced in 1995 and was recently updated to a new version that has the world’s first wristwatch with a dual-frequency locator beacon (PLB). Most recently, Breitling released the Exospace B55, it’s first connected chronograph that embodies innovation, functionality and performance.

Today, Breitling is perpetuating these authentic and privileged ties with aviation by cooperating with the world’s elite pilots. Several exceptional teams fly the firm’s colors, including the famous Breitling Jet Team with its spectacular aerobatics. Breitling’s affiliation with aviation dates back to the early 1930s, when it manufactured on-board chronographs for aircraft cockpits. These instruments enjoyed great success in the various armed forces, including the Royal Air Force, which used them in World War II propeller-driven fighter planes. This solid connection to aviation continued, and in 1952 Breitling launched its legendary Navitimer watch, featuring a circular slide rule serving to perform the entire range of calculations relating to airborne navigation. Better

Take no shortcuts when it comes to safeguarding your treasures. BY CHRISTIAN CHENSVOLD

SAFE

THAN SORRY

or cinephiles, the phrase “jewelry insurance” may conjure up scenes of Cary Grant as a French Riviera cat burglar in To Catch a Thief, trading quips with the austere agent from Lloyd’s of London. In fact, insuring precious gems may be a tad less glamorous, but certainly a necessity for nearly everyone—not just wealthy dowagers showing off their jewels around a roulette table. It starts when someone decides to propose to their sweetheart and buys an engagement ring. From the moment they leave the jeweler they should have a policy that covers the cherished engagement ring. “Ideally you would receive an appraisal and insure an engagement ring right when you purchase it,” says Trina Woldt, VP and chief marketing officer of Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, one of the oldest in the business. Most jewelry insurance claims are not due to theft but loss, “which includes accidental loss and mysterious disappearance,” she explains. “That could be anything from the dog eating it to having it fall from cold fingers while shoveling snow. You might be surprised to learn how many people lose their rings on their honeymoon because they’re not used to wearing a ring and forget that fingers shrink in water.” Also, on the off chance that a dashing cat burglar does enter your home, be advised that your homeowner’s policy might not provide the ideal coverage and, even if it does, filing a claim might cause your premium to increase dramatically. Jeweler’s Mutual plans cover any kind of loss or damage. Its policies offer to repair or replace a lost item through the jeweler of your choice. In general, specialty jewelry insurance costs about 1 to 2 percent of the value of an item per year, so a $10,000 ring would only cost $100 to $150 per year to insure. “It’s a really affordable way to safeguard items that have both monetary and emotional value,” says Woldt. Deductibles can be as low as zero. (Watch insurance is its own category, but operates identically.) To decide whether you need it for an engagement ring, Grandma’s pearls, or other items, look at each of your pieces and evaluate your instinctive emotional reaction to finding out that they’ve gone missing. The stronger the emotional reaction, the more reason to insure.

1701 Bespoke

Serving the Dapper Men of Detroit

W

hen most people think of Detroit, they think of manufacturing, automobiles or sports. There’s a sense of grit here. As the saying goes, “The hotter the fire the harder the steel.” Detroit is not known for fashion, however, 1701 Bespoke, founded by Max Schmidt and Tom Daguanno, is setting out to change that. Paying homage to Detroit’s founding year of 1701, the bespoke suiting shop began when Daguanno asked Schmidt to be the best man in his wedding in 2012. The pair quickly found that they couldn’t find anything locally in their preferred style—a closer cut, with Italian details. After finding a tailor in Birmingham, they developed a relationship and eventually launched 1701 Bespoke to deliver clothing that showcases attention to fine details, modesty and utilitarian design. You can tell that Schmidt and Daguanno are passionate about what they do. “It was a perfect fit,” says Schmidt. “When we realized that, by combining Tom’s design skills and my business skills, we could serve an unmet need in the local marketplace and it all just fell into place.” The two not only help gentlemen create the perfect suit for any occasion, they focus on making the groom’s special day unique too. “We work with a lot of men who want to skip the rental. We believe that this is the groom’s special day too and what he wears should be as unique as a bride’s gown,” Daguanno explains. They searched for over a year before finding the perfect spot on Woodward Avenue near the Majestic Theatre, in the old CPOP Gallery space. Designed by Patrick Thompson Design, the space features hardwood floors, exposed brick and ample space to showcase their fabrics and designs. Just like the suits at 1701 Bespoke, the space is focused on the details, creating a relaxed atmosphere for guests to discuss their new bespoke suiting.

Each handmade shirt, tie, suit, jacket, trouser and tuxedo is custom sewn to a client’s measurements, and Schmidt, Daguanno and their team guide customers through fabrics, colors and shoulder style options. Prices begin at around $500 and it takes just four to six weeks to finish a custom suit. But if you need a suit for a wedding, give them eight weeks for turnaround time, just in case. 71

DETROIT D

etroit boasts some of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the world. As Detroit was becoming a booming metropolis in the 1920s, its skyline was transformed and architects around the nation took notice. The style of the day was Art Deco (then referred to as Style Moderne) and it represented luxury, glamour and progress.

from 1925 until about 1945, and throughout that time the style evolved from the flamboyant 1920s to a more stripped-down and simple look during the Great Depression. The materials used throughout this time period also evolved to include aluminum, stainless steel, plastics, porcelain-enameled steel, molded glass, glass block and a special glass tile called Vitrolite or Carrara Glass (depending on the manufacturer)—anything that conveyed scientific progress, commerce, technology and speed was used.

How does one spot Art Deco in the wild? Look for geometric shapes, faceted architectural forms and ziggurats (think stepped Aztec pyramids), trapezoidal, zigzagged, or triangular patterns, chevron patterns and sweeping curves, or sunburst motifs. Color, sometimes called Polychrome, was frequently found in Art Deco designs. With the discovery of King Tut’s tomb in 1922, influences came from Egypt, but also Assyria, Babylon and Aztec Mexico—anything exotic was in vogue.

In 1986, a group of collectors and preservationists came together realizing that Detroit’s Art Deco architecture and artifacts needed to be preserved. They formed the Detroit Area Art Deco Society (DAADS), Michigan’s only Art Deco Society. DAADS continues to be a resource for preservation, artifacts, design and advocacy. In 1993, the organization comprehensively cataloged all of Detroit’s Art Deco architecture.

Popular not only in architecture, Art Deco design influenced just about everything including jewelry, textiles, furniture, simple household items (teapots, ashtrays, radios) and vehicles including automobiles, trains, bicycles, boats and ocean liners. The Art Deco period spans the time between the two World Wars,

This spring, the society will again host its Michigan Moderism Exposition at the Southfield Pavillion, which will feature dozens of dealers in original Art Deco collectibles. More information is available at daads.org. 73

WHY IT’S

ESSENTIAL TO UPDATE

YOUR JEWELRY APPRAISALS

By Susan Barnett, C.G.A.

I

’ve worked in the jewelry industry for 30 years and I know all too well that it’s a lot more fun to admire a new piece of fine jewelry than it is to think about the possibility of it being lost or stolen. While it’s true that most buyers insure their jewelry at the time of purchase, they often make the “set it and forget it” mistake afterward, which can be costly.

in the event of a divorce or a death. If jewelry is inaccurately valued, it could have negative tax consequences and can also lead to an estate being divided unequally. When hiring an appraiser, it’s important to choose one that belongs to a national appraisal organization that requires them to keep current with changing state laws and the jewelry market, and they should be recertified every year.

What many don’t realize is that it’s critical to have Insurance Replacement Appraisals updated every few years so that insurance coverage can be adjusted. Here’s why: The values of precious metals and diamonds change with the market and prices can change pretty quickly. For example, in the first six months of 2016 gold prices increased by 26%. In contrast, during the first six months of 2013 gold prices fell by 23%. If prices go down, you’re probably paying too much for insurance. If prices go up, you aren’t fully protected against loss.

Tapper’s Diamonds and Fine Jewelry is proud to be one of only six jewelers in the state of Michigan to offer comprehensive appraisals. I am a Certified Gemologist Appraiser, certified by the American Gem Society, and I follow a strict code of ethics governed by international organizations such as the Jewelers Vigilance Committee and Jewelers of America. Most appraisals can be done while you wait simply by scheduling an appointment. For more information, contact Susan Barnett at sbarnett@tappers.com or (248) 865-6087.
