day 1 PORTO - Arrival. The historic centre of Porto was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1996. Since then the city was growing and modernizing, and this also contributed to the fact that it was European Capital of Culture in 2001. Today Porto is a truly cosmopolitan city that blends tradition and its people, the monumentality of its buildings with the modernity of their stores, moved its nightlife and originality of its designers and fashion designers. Lose yourself in the narrow streets and stone staircase linking the downtown Porto and the typical medieval Ribeira, where the Douro River has the biggest highlight. Enjoy the view! day 3 PORTO - Buffet breakfast at hotel. Check out. GUIMARÃES. In the morning, straight trip to Guimarães; by car (private or rental) the trip takes less than 1 hour. The city of Guimarães was recognized as a World Heritage Site in December 2001 due to the history and preservation of its monuments and the surrounding buildings, which over the years have maintained their homogeneity. The castle, the Collegiate Church of Stª N. Oliveira and the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza are examples. Also known as the "cradle of nationality" because it was from here that D. Afonso Henriques started the conquest of Portugal from the Moors. In Guimarães, you can find the Ducal Palace; stop here for a visit. It is a symbol of Portuguese nationality with a very rich history and reveals the power and wealth of the most important house of its era. Let yourself be enchanted by still many typical restaurants and craft shops will find through the medieval streets linking the palace to the center of Guimarães. Accommodation in Guimarães
day 4 GUIMARÃES - Buffet breakfast at hotel. Exit in the morning towards Douro Valley with a brief stop in Amarante to visit the Monastery of St. Gonçalo and to taste the sweets, all of them original convent pastry made from eggs and sugar (called S.Gonçalos or Lérias or Papos d’Anjo); continuing till RÉGUA, considered the centre of the Douro Wine Region. In December 2001, UNESCO elevated the Alto Douro Wine Region into Heritage category. Unique region because of bringing together the virtues of shale soil and its privileged sun exposure with the unique characteristics of a microclimate along with the hard work of Douro men. Not to be missed - Douro Museum, Building Casa do Douro or a wine producer estate where you can learn all about the vineyard, climate, soils and wine. day 5 RÉGUA or PINHÃO - Buffet breakfast at hotel. Departure to FOZ CÔA, the last stop on Portuguese lands declared World Heritage Site The Coa Valley is considered one of the most important rock art sites in the world and is the most important open-air Palaeolithic rock art site. Here identified five dozen cores of art over the last 17 miles of the River Coa, until its confluence with the Douro. These cores have engravings dating mostly from the Upper Palaeolithic but also kept the valley examples of paintings and engravings of the Neolithic and Chalcolithic, Iron Age engravings and the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and XX, when the millers, recent writers Coa, left the valley floor. day 6 FOZ CÔA - Breakfast is included at the manor house. Output Foz Coa direct to CIUDAD RODRIGO, across the border from Portugal to Spain in Vilar Formoso. Ciudad Rodrigo, declared a Historic-Artistic, is a fortified plaza located west of the province of Salamanca. Its walls hide a valuable set of civil and religious buildings, with particular reference to its Cathedral and Castle. Visit village of Siega Verde, located about 25 km from Ciudad Rodrigo. The set of Paleolithic Art of Siega Verde is situated on the banks of the Rio Agueda, Villar de la Yegua, district of Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca province. Village about 50 kms as the crow flies from the set of rock art of Foz Coa, with which it has many affinities. The two sites work closely in various fields, research and dissemination. In Siega Verde are also organized tours to the general public from an interpretation centre. day 7 CIUDAD RODRIGO - Breakfast in the hotel and check-out Exit to SALAMANCA located in Castilla y León. The city is home to the oldest university in Spain - The University of Salamanca created in 1218 by Alfonso IX of Leon. In 1988 the city was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Salamanca is a city of enormous charm and an important architectural heritage, among which we highlight its two cathedrals (the Old and New), the Casa das Conchas, the Plaza Mayor, the Convento de San Esteban and Higher Schools. day 8 SALAMANCA - Breakfast in the hotel. Take the day to visit to the Old Cathedral (entrance fee included), the Monterrey Palace, the Convent of San Esteban and the Casa Lis where is the museum of art deco and art nouveau with an interesting collection of porcelain dolls. Salamanca besides monumental is a city full of life and animation due to the large amount of young people who live there because of attending the University, to enjoy strolling through several downtown streets, tapas in various taverns and restaurants in town. day 9 SALAMANCA - Breakfast in the hotel. Output to ÁVILA. Avila bathed by River Adaja is a walled city and has strongly marked by history, especially the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. day 10 Ă VILA - Breakfast in the hotel. Exit to Segovia. SEGOVIA was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. It is known internationally for the aqueduct. Segovia is a fascinating city, and everyone says he has a special atmosphere, with plenty of life, especially in the area of Plaza Mayor, next to the cathedral. Apart from the aqueduct, another great monument of Segovia is the Real AlcĂĄzar. It is a spectacular fortress-shaped castle that rises at one end of the city, often doing sentry. day 11 SEGOVIA - Breakfast in the hotel. Exit to Burgos. BURGOS was founded as a fortress in 884, was elevated to the Episcopal headquarters in 1029. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries was a place of important trade fairs. Burgos was the seat of government of Franco during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Burgos is a city rich in Gothic art, especially the churches of Santa Gadea (XII century), St. Stephen (XIII century) and S. In addition to its lively historic center around the Plaza Mayor, Leon has among its attractions an important architectural heritage of different times. day 14 LÉON - Breakfast in the hotel. Exit from Leon towards a small village about 2 km, called Las Medulas. The Medulas are an ancient Roman gold exploration in the open and is now a grand and spectacular landscape of reddish formations and groves of chestnut and oak trees at the site that was previously occupied by Medilianum Mountain. Before beginning your journey of about 1800 meters inside the cave, we recommend starting visiting the archaeological Classroom (museum), where we can see how the Romans were able to extract the gold and made for 200 years.
