This special edition of ACC EMAG covers the moments, messages and memories from Outpouring, the ACC23 National Conference.

You were invited to join us at our ACC23 National Conference, and you came from near and far. It was the largest gathering of our pastors and leaders, with over 2,700 gathering in one place.

What an incredible three days together:

We sang our lungs out in praise; We opened our hearts in worship; We danced in celebration; We prayed fervently for those we love; We gathered around the communion table in a spirit of unity;

We honoured many heroes; We did business together; We laughed; we wept;

We had reunions with old friends; We received an outpouring from heaven; and We were anointed and commissioned to go out, to minister to others from our overflow.

We went home both hungry and full. Thank you to everyone who shared this time with us.

All the Remits presented to Conference were passed, formalising changes to the ACC United Constitution and ACC Child Protection Policy. Alphacrucis University College was celebrated for 75 years of training leaders, and Mark Edwards gave a passionate presentation and update about the freedom of religion.

Ben Naitoko is the ACC QLD/NT State President, and has been a member of the Queensland State Executive for four years. He is Senior Pastor of King’s Church Australia with his wife Trish –a thriving multi-site church and multi-site Christian school. Ben has been an ACC Pastor for over 20 years; he started out as a Youth Pastor in Mackay, was founding Principal of Planetshakers College (now iSEE College) in Brisbane, and founding campus director of the Alphacrucis Brisbane Campus. Ben is also the current board chairman of Youth Alive Queensland. Ben and Trish are the parents of three sons: Amos, Joshua, and Ifalemi

When I was a child, I wanted to be … either an AFL footballer or an Australian cricketer.

Outpouring on the generations

Youth Revival

'Your sons and daughters will prophesy; your young men will see visions; your old men will dream dreams' Joel 2: 28

'There is a grace upon this movement to reach young people, not just for this generation, but for the generations that have gone before us,' declared Matt Heins. 'May we take confidence in that but may we never ever treat it with familiarity.'

An outpouring upon the next generation was always at the heart of the ACC23 Conference – from the Kids & Youth programs, to mobilising young adult ministry across the nation. The celebration of forty years of Youth Alive was the focus of the Wednesday night, with medleys of songs from previous decades that had all generations praising and dancing throughout the arena. Current and former Youth Alive leaders reunited for an after-party with much laughter as memories of incredible rallies and events were shared.

Outpouring Effects

The Lord spoke to my heart from the book of Haggai in August 2022: 'The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.'

(Haggai 2:9 KJV)

I believe we are living in the latter days – that we’re going to see greater dimensions of the glory of God. And signs and wonders following people being saved by the hundreds and thousands.

I didn’t know exactly what to call this season but I have this strong burning conviction that it will be prayer that takes us into it – and it will be mission that comes out of it!

Contagious Fire

We need the touch of the Spirit of God so we're never the same again because His holy fire changes us. Fire is contagious. Here's my question to you: Leader, are you contagious?

I want to be a contagious believer. It's interesting when Moses encountered God at that burning bush, but he didn't set up a camp there. He was changed by the one who was in the fire. Wherever you go, the fire will spread.

Don’t live in the Rain Shadow

Our previous house was in an area where heavy rain would fall all across the region but our house would remain dry. A scientific reason for this was that certain places are in a ‘rain shadow’. Sometimes you're just not positioned to receive the rain. Leaders, t's the day of the latter rain, when God wants to pour out His Spirit, and you could miss out because you're not rightly positioned.

Don't live in a rain shadow. Come out and position yourself where you can receive again an outpouring of Heaven.

How Hungry Are You?

One of the most important questions I want to pose to leaders and believers is this: How hungry are you for the outpouring that we are prophesying over our nation? May I share some things about being hungry.

• Hungry people position themselves to receive. One of the most important things for us as leaders and believers, is if we really, really do want to see an outpouring, is to begin to stir up, honour and steward our spiritual hunger for it. To keep on being filled, you have to pursue it.

• Hunger is an indicator of health.

Hunger is an indicator of health. If we use this as a marker of your spiritual health, how healthy is your spirit? Hungry Christians are healthy Christians. The level of hunger in you or your congregation indicates the level of your health. The great thing is that there is always more!

• Be full and hungry.

We have to learn how to be full and hungry. It's not a contradiction, because the more full of the Spirit you are, the more hungry you are because of all you've tasted. The more fervently you cry out, ‘let there be an outpouring because I'm not I'm not full enough yet’.

• Nurture your spiritual hunger.

Our hunger is a gift from God; He wants us to have it more than we do. We can eat all we want but the limit to the outpouring depends on you being satisfied.

• We need to eat to stay hungry

This is one of the greatest paradoxes of the Kingdom. In the natural, you become hungry by not eating, but in the Kingdom, you get hungry through eating. The more full of the Holy Spirit you get, the more hungry you get!

So how do you taste and see that the Lord is good? Discover that and do more of it. Engage with some spiritual practices that open you to Christ in a different way.

It's Time For Revival

The day of signs and wonders is well and truly here. When revival broke out in Neuma Church on 28 August 2022, I had pastors ask me, “How are you going to sustain this?” I replied, "I have no idea." So I went to the Lord and said, “Father, how am I going to sustain this?” He said, “You didn't start it so you don't have to sustain it.” He started it, so all we need to do is remain in Him and steward what He has started in His house.

You can have more if you want it

Whenever you look at rain or water, in the Bible, it's symbolic of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Prophet Zechariah said, “Ask God for rain, in the time of the latter rain” (Zechariah 10:1). It literally means to ask God for rain in the middle of a downpour. He's calling us to ask for more revival in the middle of a move of God."

Faith-filled Prayer

The history books record that the number one prerequisite for revival is faith-filled prayer. If we don't pray, God won't move. Not because He can't but because He's chosen to limit his intervention to our intercession. He calls us into a co-labouring partnership.

A recent study of global pandemics throughout history discovered that in the three to five years on, there is this resurgence in spirituality. Can I suggest to you that we are in a God appointed window, where we need to ask for rain while we are in the season of rain.

Isaiah 43:19 says “Behold, I am doing a new thing. Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” Tragically, many leaders would rather be an expert in the old thing rather than a novice in the new thing. Jesus said, unless you become like a little child, you're not going to be able to access the things of the kingdom of God. If you are hungry for more of Him, begin to cry out to God to pour out a spirit of revival upon your life, your church, and your ministry.

Revival In The Home

JOEL: We want to talk about an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in your household, in your marriage and home. The Lord spoke to me from Genesis 26:25, about the process of going from the altar (our personal devotion and encounter with God), to the tent (our home and family) to the well (a life-giving well to the community). Our altar moments should flow into our homes; and only when that is flourishing do we change our focus and let the overflow go out into the church and the community.

We have to be deliberate and international about prioritising our families or the busyness and demands of ministry and life will actually encroach into those very important relationships.

SHARON: Have you ever considered what it would look like when a whole family – the mother, father, daughter and son –intercede and go to battle on behalf of our community? It’s the plan that God had right back there in the Garden.

Isaiah 8: 18 says, ”Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me. We are for signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, the God of the angel armies." We are the signs and wonders – as a husband, a wife, a mother, a father, a son, or a daughter. We are the signs and wonders that will point the generations back to our Heavenly Father.

Here are five practical points how we have endeavoured to bring revival into our home.

1. Deal with ungodly ambition. If you read the story of Jephthah in Judges 11, he was so desperate for victory that he was willing to sacrifice his household to ensure that he would gain victory at any cost. Being willing to give up your marriage and children, so that your ministry will be successful may look like zeal for God's house, but there is a fine line between zeal and ungodly ambition.

2. Find your rhythm. There is a complementary nature to the male and female in marriage that brings balance.

3. Set clear boundaries. This means intentionally setting aside time for your family and includes setting time for healthy, intimate conversations – not directive or corrective conversation. It also involves setting boundaries for your home space - that you make it a safe space for your kids.

4. Deal with unhealthy expectations. This is about coming to terms with who God says you are and what you have to offer, and that is enough.

5. Spend time praying over our families. There are many things we can delegate out to other people, but we can't delegate being the priest of our household.

Grace To Run With The Kings

The young people of our nation need Jesus. They've got technology and wealth, and they are connected with social media, but they are one of the loneliest generations to have ever lived.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that 55% of 18 to 25 year olds report loneliness more than once a week. Victoria is the most lonely with 65% saying that they were lonely in 2021. One global pandemic has not been the cause. A world that preaches division, offence, and self righteousness has literally driven people apart. What our young adults need right now is a unified body, a functional community and a loving family. We, the Church, are the answer.

In 1 Kings 18: 41-45, there are two characters that are polar opposites. We have King Ahab, who is probably one of the most carnal kings in the Old Testament. He had political and commercial success, and would bow to anything that would garner his attention. He was a king that was a slave to his passions and desires. Then you have the man of God, Elijah – the only thing that he ever owned was the clothes on his back. God had graced Elijah to run alongside, and to run ahead, of the king.

As pastors, we were never meant to be the kings of this generation but God has anoiinted and graced us to run with the next generation, and lead them towards a breakthrough.

What is this grace and anointing we have to run with the kings?

1. Authentic

One of the dangers before us is that we try to compete with the world. What I love about Elijah is that there's an authenticity of the power of God. Take away everything, and you look at who you really are: it's just you and the Holy Spirit.

2. Servanthood

When someone would run in front of the king, it indicated service. We have been called and graced to serve this generation. Can we serve the young people of this generation who think differently to us and have different values?

3. Positional

Elijah may have been running before the king, yet he was out in front, leading the way. Leading in this season may be intimidating , but this is when we get the greatest breakthrough.

We may be counter-cultural to the world, yet 'greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world'. It's the perfect storm for the Church to rise up and meet the needs of a lonely generation that seem to have it all but literally have nothing. It's time to get the soul of the next generation back into the life of the Church.

An Anointing For An Outpouring

1 Samuel 16 tells the story of Samuel and how he anointed David to be king. It starts with God saying to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn over something I've rejected?” The anointing that Samuel brought to David triggered a new season. It’s time to stop mourning over what God himself is moving on from, and His anointing will become a trigger for a brand new day for you.

We're going to pray for each other. Everyone is going to have a dual role because you are going to be both Samuel and David; the giver and the receiver. I believe three specific things will happen as a result of the anointing for an outpouring.

1. The anointing will break every chain. It will set you free, because the anointing breaks the yoke. The anointing sets the captives free, and it's time we got to silence the demonic in our churches. Why isn't there hunger in the House? Often there's something suppressing it and sometimes we just need a good clean out.

2. It's going to awaken eternity.

When eternity is awake, it's a heaven and hell thing. Awakening eternity doesn't mean you have to think about death; in fact it's the opposite: you think about eternal life. Healing the sick is a demonstration of the Kingdom of God. Let it come alive, like you did in your first love.

3. The anointing will fill you to over flow.

The best way to minister is out of the overflow. The overflow means it's not just about you. When God wants to overflow inside of you, it's because He's got other people He wants to fill. The outpouring is God's job. Overflowing is our job.

David experienced this. He wrote in Psalm 23: 5"... You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows." After David was anointed, you know what he did next? He went back to the sheep. And we will return to our sheep, anointed and overflowing.

Local church +Missions

In 1937, a handful of men and women sat around a table and the Assemblies of God (now the ACC) in Australia commenced. They had a very clear vision that is documented in our United Constitution. Two specific things continue to define who are today: the training of leaders and global missions. They began this movement with the end in mind.

This is where we are headed. Our Movement’s leaders knew the pathway between where we are now and where we will be. You see, without the raising of leaders and global missions, we don't get to the end that the book of Revelation records.

May I suggest that every great church and body of believers, has a holistic missions and global focus; simply because they've adopted the heart of God, for discipling the nations. Global missions and what God is doing in the nations becomes inspiration for the local church.

GIVE

God is raising up an army out of our Movement to touch the nations of the earth. At the moment, one in four (25%) churches partner with our field workers. Many more give to an appeal for disaster relief, but I'm talking about the systematic support of our field workers. My goal is to get this to one in three, which requires about 60 more churches to get on board.

GO

We want to help disciple the emerging generation of young adults, by giving them the opportunity for an international internship placement for six months. They will give themselves to assisting on one of the missions of our movement, where they'll be mentored with our partners and with locals. This may well be the next step in some young adult’s faith journey, because if we don't give this generation something to aspire to, they'll find it out there in the world.

The Missions Stream highlighted many significant and productive endeavours around the globe. Psalm 67 teaches the reason for God’s blessing is so that salvation will be spread amongst the nations. We then unpacked – through panels, testimonies and media presentations – how the message of the gospel is spreading throughout many nations.

There were discussions about the different approaches that may be required, depending on the spiritual climate of the nation.

• In nations that have a vibrant Indigenous church, we’re able to come alongside and add our grace to their grace to see an increase in the impact of the gospel.

• In nations where the gospel can be preached, churches can be planted, believers discipled and leaders raised.

• In closed nations, we show the love of Christ through development projects and humanitarian endeavours, which positions people to respond to God-given moments as they arise.

The Stream also unpacked the sustainable and inclusive development projects ACCI field workers and partners are working on – from Asia to Africa – revealing the long-term social change that’s taking place.

Reports on disaster relief included aid to war-ravaged Ukraine, support for believers in Afghanistan who’ve been affected by the re-emergence of the Taliban, and our response to the earthquake in Türkiye and Syria.

We concluded the session with hearts full of thanks to God for the incredible work that’s being done around the globe!

Effective Community Engagement

The Community Engagement Stream reached capacity before conference. This shows that there is great hunger and passion to learn how to engage with their communities more effectively. National Director, Paul Bartlett, began by speaking on Six Practices of Successful Community Engaging Churches. These principles work regardless of the size of your church, and they work in any context.

The Community Engagement team presented the following four topics:

• Good to God: Community Programs that are transformational rather than transactional

• Engaging in the Grey Areas

• The Church your community can’t do without

• You are in a Community Disaster – What next?

Engaging with your local mayor

The highlight was, having the Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate, join us to talk on how pastors and local churches can assist their local government in building healthy communities.

We also had the opportunity to ask Mayor Tate, what is the kind of stance or attitude that every pastor needs to have when they go to visit their local mayor. He said some interesting things. Firstly, the value of respecting each other's time. e.g. don’t spend an hour talking about things that aren’t important; then just as it is time to finish up, talk about what you really came there for. He also said that it is better to come with an attitude of how can the church serve its community, rather than just how the local government can serve the community. It is the spirit or the attitude of how we work together that results in great outcomes.

The Community Stream was a great success, and our team are looking forward to connecting with those pastors and leaders who attended who are interested in hosting a Roundtable, a Building Strong Communities workshop, or enrolling in the Diploma of Community Services through Alphacrucis.

Navigating Difficult Conversations

• 53% of leaders avoid difficult conversations because they don’t have the training to handle them

• 70% of people admit to avoiding difficult conversations because they are not equipped to deal with them.

The Chaplaimcy Stream focused on how to navigate difficult conversations in a complex world. There is a growing sense of discomfort as we try to balance the unchanging message of Christ with a world that is challenging every norm and absolute. This leads us often into difficult conversations and if they are not handled well, they can diminish our effectiveness and break our connection with people who are desperately in need of support.  Our desire is to:

• Help people find answers

• Keep communication lines open

• Bring relevance and support

• Maintain integrity and truth

It’s not just what we say, but how we say it.

The outer circle of the framework focusses on what we need to do before we start the conversation and the inner circle focusses on what we need to do during the conversation.

There are so many things which can get in the way before we even start talking – Cognitive Dissonance, Unconscious Bias, Triggers and Transference. We need to work on ourselves if we are really going to make a difference; but a little preparation, a little thought and a good serve of empathy will make us highly effective and will open up the conversation.

Building on each of the concepts in the framework, provides us with an effective mechanism for dealing with any difficult conversation whether it is resolving a conflict or navigating one of the challenging areas listed below.

Jesus was comfortable in having difficult conversations – whoever He was talking to. The good news is that we can be confident as well, bringing real support and direction to those in need. Does our worship include everyone?

The Worship Stream was an incredible launch into the Outpouring Conference. I am so grateful to Darlene Zschech, Stacey Hilliar, Joth Hunt , Luke Taylor, Dave Balestri, Beth Glee and the amazing worship team, for sharing all their wisdom and experience that gave me a deeper revelation of worship.

One thing that I have been deliberating since I returned home was raised at the Q&A session with the Worship panel. It was the question regarding whether worship in our church includes everyone.

Darlene’s answer to this question has made me consider how we do church and the people who may be excluded (unintentionally) from worshipping God. e.g. those with ASD, DS, epilepsy or hearing impairments. Can we really say ‘our church is for everyone’ when these people are excluded?

Darlene’s response was that where possible, we need to make allowance for people who are in these categories and work towards making the church accessible and inclusive to all. She shared how Hope UC offer a special sitting for their events, such as Christmas productions, that was free of these sensory triggers.

I have been doing some research into the triggers around the impact of strobe lights and epilepsy, Irlen syndrome and the sensory spectrum of DS. It was an eye-opener to read that strobe lights could trigger an epileptic reaction in people with no prior history of epilepsy.

As legislation is becoming more stringent around equal opportunity for people with mobility, sight and hearing, the Church has an opportunity to lead the way and be more inclusive for these communities. While it may not be possible for a dedicated program, but we can definitely look at the opportunities to offer services that were more inclusive for individuals and families with these conditions.

Planting with purpose

Over 300 delegates signed up for the Church Planting Stream, revealing there is a growing vision and passion to launch new churches across the nation and overseas.

The Stream was hosted by Corey Turner who shared on Foundations of Church Planting and The Church Planter in the first two sessions. This included the testimony of church planter, Sam Dix who planted Disciple House in Western Australia.

One of the highlights was the panel discussion with ACC State Directors and Exponential Australia. The final session focussed on Multi-site Church Planting with Mark Varughese.

Church Planting continues to be a key focus of the ACC, and there is great momentum in this space.

Vision and Goals

The ACC vision is to plant 500 churches across Australia over the next ten years, with the follwoing four goals:

1. Identify and recruit 500 church planters by 2033

2. Train 500 church planters by 2033

3. Identify 500 locations to plant ACC churches

4. Resources to support the 500 churches

The Youth Stream at the ACC National Conference had a profound impact. Youth pastors from all over the country were equipped, inspired, and left with their hearts full! Hosted by the Youth Alive team, we had the incredible honour of having international speakers, Seow How from Heart of God Church in Singapore, and Brandon Cormier from Zeal Church in the USA. Youth leaders from across the nation came together, sharing a heart and passion to see the next generation won for Jesus.

Tips to Host a Great Event

Church events hold a special place in our lives, bringing us together and allowing us to deepen our faith. But let’s face it, organising these events can be quite the challenge, consuming our time and energy. That’s why, as someone who shares your passion for church activities, I’d like to offer you some simple tips for when you plan your next event.

I’m incredibly passionate about the gathering of believers. The ultimate goal is to create spaces where people can encounter God. So how do we achieve that? I believe it starts with intentional planning and outworking of vision and mission. It’s about being prayerful and sensitive to what God wants to do through us during the planning and delivery of the event.

Let’s embark on this journey together, putting our hearts into every detail, and creating an event that will leave a lasting impact on the lives of those who attend. So, here are a few friendly pointers to help you plan and execute events within your church:

* Start with a Clear Purpose and Vision

The first step is to clearly define the purpose and vision of your event. What are you hoping to achieve? Once you have a clear idea, you can build the rest of your event around this foundation.

When we embarked on planning the ACC National Conference with the theme of “Outpouring”, we had a specific outcome and practical elements in mind. This guided our decision-making process, from the branding, songlist and guest ministry to the kids’ program and everything in between.

* Build Around a Theme

Having a theme is a great way to ensure your event has a clear purpose. It can be as simple as a word or phrase that captures the essence of what you want to convey.

* Plan Ahead and Get Organised

It may sound obvious, but planning ahead and staying organised is crucial. Sometimes, despite our best intentions, we can become overwhelmed. That’s why creating a detailed timeline of tasks to be completed before, during, and after the event is essential. It keeps us on track and ensures everything is done.

At conference, we had a team motto: “There will always be something to solve, fix, or change. Let’s not have it be something we could have addressed earlier.” This mindset helped us stay ahead of potential issues.

* Creativity

Creativity is a powerful gift that can bring life to an event! It has the ability to captivate hearts and minds and evoke emotions. Through creative elements such as music, art, design, and storytelling, you can create an atmosphere where attendees encounter God in fresh and profound ways. Bethany Carlos from Storytellers Co shares some of the behind-the-scenes detail of the ACC23 opener (left).

* The Attendee’s Experience

The ultimate success of your church event or conference hinges on the experience of the attendees. To create an engaging and meaningful experience, consider the following:

* Program When planning your event schedule, aim for a perfect blend of sessions, breakouts, and free time. Give your attendees opportunities to connect with one another, build relationships, and share experiences. By finding the right balance, you’ll ensure they don’t miss out on any important sessions while still having ample time to mingle and enjoy the event.

* Hospitality plays a crucial role in making attendees feel valued and well-informed. Consider providing refreshments to keep their energy levels up and their taste buds happy.

* Comfortable seating goes a long way in ensuring they can fully engage with the sessions without any discomfort.

* Kids program: Don’t forget to offer a well-organised and engaging kids program to cater to families attending the event.

* Venue preparation: Lastly, maintaining a clean and inviting venue will make everyone feel right at home. Organising a successful church event or conference requires careful planning and execution. By starting with a clear purpose and vision, planning ahead, staying organised, and focusing on creating a positive attendee experience, you can host an event that leaves a lasting impact. So, embrace the challenge, rally your team, and let’s make this event truly extraordinary!

CREATING A SPECIAL OPENING

Storytellers Co were honoured to work alongside artists across the state in producing the ACC23 Conference opener. Based on Joel 2:28, we as artists prayed and created with an expectation that God was going to move people from dry places to experiencing a fresh outpouring.

We all know the classic scene from Chariots of Fire with that incredible piece of music that automatically makes you want to jump on your feet and pretend to run in slow motion. This scene has nothing glamorous or fancy, but it moves people from spectating to participating. It inspires and calls people to significance. I highlight this because this scene has key ingredients for an effective conference opener – moving people from spectating to participating in something significant. The significant place we wanted to move people toward was an open heaven!

Every time the cast got together, we spent time in prayer and worship, allowing God to hover over the piece we were creating. It was important that the piece reflected the scripture, representing young and old, men and women, all people being refreshed in the outpouring of God’s Spirit. It was a powerful declaration to make over conference, using a range of creative expressions.

May I encourage you to pick up your own creative tools of design, composition, dance, and media when creating your own event opener. However, keep in mind that the goal is not to entertain, be glamorous, or fancy, but to move people toward the place you are believing you want to go. Our desire was to move people toward experiencing an outpouring.
