LUMINESCENT The temptation to project image and video over clothes was overwhelming. Beams of digital data cling to the pale backdrop while a neutral wardrobe and Elena’s porcelain skin tone catch the light. I love the abstraction, the spontaneity of a moment captured as a New York skyscraper cascades across the pleats of a £2,000 dress. The vintage industrial walls take on a new vibe when splashed with the illuminated icons of Dubai, a time-lapse journey See the accompanying film at:

T H E W R A I T H B L AC K B A D G E A dark and edgy new look for Rolls-Royce. Motoring writer Mark Slack looks at a new kind of RollsRoyce that challenges our traditional view of one of Britain’s most famous marques Ask anyone what they expect a Rolls-Royce to be and the words English, wood, leather, chrome and fl ying lady will almost inevitably be included in their answer. There has always been a stateliness about a Rolls-Royce, underlined by images of aristocratic owners, in front of equally aristocratic homes that have so often been portrayed in the pages of the upmarket publications that grace the polished drawing room tables of the rich and powerful. Well, times change and a Rolls-Royce can now be the antithesis to that rather regal image we have seen for so many years. Since the marque was taken in by BMW, and the first Rolls-Royce Phantom glided from the company’s new headquarters on the Goodwood Estate near Chichester, the marque has very successfully adapted to new markets and changes within the ranks of their traditional customers.

BESPOKE When they say bespoke they really do mean bespoke. And they started a long time ago when in 1933, in a move that signalled the truly Bespoke nature of the company from an early stage, Sir Henry Royce himself changed the Double R badge from the traditional Red-on-Silver to Black-on-Silver to ensure it would not clash with the paintwork colour choice of high-profile customers including the then Prince of Wales. The V12, 6.6 litre power unit that is comfortably packaged under the bonnet of the Wraith Black Badge develops 624bhp and the refinement with which it performs is like automotive chocolate; silky, smooth and very addictive. Its 642lb-ft of torque is felt to great effect should you choose to engage your right foot deeply into the rather sumptuous pile of the footwell carpeting. Under acceleration the roar from the engine is nothing short of sublime and occupants are decidedly surprised when they are pressed back into their seats, such is the accelerative force once your right foot engages the pedal with any kind of enthusiasm. It is this Jekyll and Hyde character that underpins the essence of the Black Badge in both its driving character and visual style. Rolls-Royce engineers have made changes to the suspension and steering with the result that the Wraith Black Badge is perfectly controlled and never feels wayward despite its considerable size. While it is not a super car it can be pointed with accuracy along a twisting B-road with the aplomb of a car a thrice of its size and weight. At the Goodwood Festival of Speed a Wraith Black Badge was the fifth fastest timed road car on the circuit and left a not inconsiderable number of quite impressive sports models in its wake.

C O N T E M P O R A RY From its rather dark and menacing front, over the gracefully sweeping curve of the roof, to that discreet tail, the Back Badge is bristling with neat and detail touches. From wheel centres that maintain the RR emblem upright whenever you stop, to a star studded interior roof, it truly challenges the traditional vision of a Rolls-Royce motor car. The marque’s transformation from being an almost exclusively patrician motor car to one that is desired by wealthy influencers of all ages the world over is complete. Progress never stops though and, in the true spirit of Sir Henry Royce’s famed comment, Rolls-Royce will continue to take the best that exists and make it better.

TURNING HEADS The alchemy of transforming a space into a home is significant at London’s most desirable residential development, Chelsea Waterfront. The redevelopment of 434 luxury apartments is set over 11.3 acres and is turning heads as one of the first developments of this scale on the north bank of the Thames for 100 years.

A key piece that influenced the design is the antique Murano glass chandelier that hangs delicately above the artisan coffee table in the seating area. Providing a subtle art-deco vibe, the piece is a third quarter twentieth century antique from Italy with a unique distinctive design attributed to the glass shade stylings of Sciloari and Mazzega.

G L I D E R S L 24 Exceptionality; a concept chased by luxury yacht fabricators across the world. To capture such a quality, one must forget all previously learnt limits and think beyond the proverbial box. British luxury yacht makers Glider have brought remarkability to the frontier in the form of the keenly awaited Sports Limousine 24.
DESIGN C R A F T I N G T H E E XC E P T I O N A L
H E R I TAG E Driven by passion, Glider’s masterbuilders have fostered a reputation for awe-inspiring vessels. Each and every yacht is a bespoke handcrafted masterpiece, complete with unsurpassed luxury, speed and performance, and above all compellingly unique. As a collective they continually push the realm of what is possible and strive to evolve preconceived ideas of how a superyacht should look. Within the bounds of the quintessentially English naval yard in Southampton, Glider’s designs come to life after meticulous planning and scheming at their London headquarters. It took nine years of intensive design, development, analysis and testing – by an elite team of aero and hydro analysts, Formula One and aerospace engineers, and naval architects – to bring the latest Gilder specimen to life. A unique design concept inspired by the vehicle that commanded the luxury travel scene for decades, the limousine.

PORTO MONTENEGRO
64
65
B E T W E E N E A RT H & S E A The shoreline of Montenegro, described by the poet Lord Byron as “the most beautiful contact between the earth and sea”, is an awe-inspiring beauty, particularly the UNESCO protected Bay of Kotor, in which the port is situated. Once a dishevelled naval base, Tivat was a speck on the naturally elegant coastline, but after a generous $480 million investment, Tivat has reincarnated as Porto Montenegro. Scoped by the collective dream of great visionaries, Porto Montenegro is a deliberation of the town’s extravagance – a jewel in the crown of Kotor’s coastline. With fourteen eateries – and counting – your dining options are plenty. Culinary highlights include: zesty mezzes at Byblos, hand-crafted sorbet at Moritz Eis and undoubtedly the Jacks Creek Black Angus Ribeye at the Regent Porto Montenegro. Shopping is a staple pastime in Montenegro, influenced by the duty-free allowances. A wealth of designer outlets, including Balenciaga, Cartier, Tom Ford, and Valentino (to name a few) line the bucolic streets, with ample caffeinated pit stops between. The port also offers an educating experience with its maritime museum, collection of galleries, sports club and even a prestigious school within the grounds.

“A B L A N K C A N VA S S C A R E D M E ” Unconcerned with exacting details, Ryan Hewett prefers the reliance of his mind’s eye, allowing a fluid process memory and creative imagination to canvas. A process, less concerned with capturing an external likeness, but more so about a portrayal of the inner most self. For fifteen years, he has practiced as a full-time artist, coining his bravura and signature style. From warped sketches into his now ampler, flowing oil paintings, his work has been a journey of discovery, both in subject and in self. Hewett’s steadfast splashes of the pallet knife and uninhabited blending, building, edging and scraping off layers, transforms these otherwise ordinary subjects into evoking imitations, whose eyes and

IVAN ALIFAN
“E V E RY A RT I S T WA N T S TO C H A L L E N G E T H E M S E LV E S S O M E H OW ” Despite his depiction of candy-covered figurines, Ivan Alifan isn’t one for sugarcoating. In his latest series, he uses his art to tackle the perverse scrutiny of lust and it’s taboo-ness. In an interview, at his graduate showcase at OCAD University, Alifan explains, “These paintings are not an attempt to represent physical characteristics, but rather create a language of underlining [erotic] subtext”. Notwithstanding his previous claim, Alifan’s depictions of his subjects are beautiful and enviably perfect. Whilst each portrait’s physiognomies might vary, they all bare the same Paradise
calling card; liberal amounts of cream-like substance decorating the subjects face. Not to suggest that this is a textural after-effect, the pouring (or in some cases whipping) cream, is rather a fundamental part of the painting itself. There has always been a strong connection between food and lust – with both triggering the same pleasure receptors in the brain – which could be why Alifan uses both in his work. His subjects, poised (and even adorned) with baked goods, waffle cones and sweet treats, sigh with ecstasy and lust; eye’s closed or gazing into the soul of the on-looker. Whilst the meaning of each painting is left to the conclusion of the viewer, there is no questioning the sensual undertone. Ivan Alifan’s work is strikingly seductive, exciting, experimental and above all, beautiful.

“G R E AT PA I N T I N G S C A N H AV E C O M P L E X E M OT I O N S ” Jake Wood-Evans is a master of his craft. Haunting and beautiful, his dark and contemporary approach to Classicism is truly extraordinary. Born in 1980 in Devon, Jake graduated from Falmouth University with a BA Hons in Fine Art. He was subsequently awarded a scholarship from the Royal Academy for classical study at the Prado museum in Madrid. Based in Brighton for a number of years, he currently lives and works in Hastings. In an interview with Unit London, Wood-Evans spoke about his artistic process: “scraping away and rubbing off the veneer you’re left with something underneath that’s more subdued, more real” Contrary to a lot of artists, Wood-Evans relished within rule and order. He explains, “In figurative painting there is a wrong and a right. It was nice to have boundaries…but after while I realised it was restricting me”. Using classic portraits as a starting point, WoodEvans re-creates and then deconstructs antiquated

paintings, reincarnating glimpses of past histories – both glorious and hopeless. Using some of the same techniques employed by the great painters of the Baroque, Romantic, Classic and Renascence eras, Wood-Evans hopes to captivate his audiences, mimicking the atmosphere and evoking presence of art belonging to such poignant movements. Applying bold strokes and intense layers of colour, WoodEvans partially dishevels the canvas; scoring and wiping away the surface. It is the end result, stripped of it’s finery and pretense, that is so raw and real, that audiences can’t help but be effected by it.

LUCIAN FREUD
“W H AT D O I A S K O F A PA I N T I N G ? I A S K I T TO A S TO N I S H , D I S T U R B , SEDUCE, CONVINCE” As the grandson of one of the world’s greatest – and most controversial – thinkers, Lucian Freud’s likewise great and controversial art has placed him as one of the most influential British painters. Born into a Jewish family in Berlin, Freud moved to Britain in 1933 to escape the clutches of Nazism. His path to artistry was on course for early success, having studied at Central School of Art in London, Lucien Freud self portrait painted on a hen’s egg
the Cedric Morris’ East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing and Goldsmiths’ College. But his studies were interrupted when he enlisted in the Merchant Navy, to fight in the Second World War. When he returned he exchanged his artillery for a new weapon: the paintbrush. His early work shows clear influences of surrealism, but as he progressed, Freud inherited Realism, focusing primarily on figurative art. Freud was an intensely private man, in fact most of his work posed by close friends and family, which is where much of his audiences’ disturb stemmed from. Considering the intensity and arguable perversity of his paintings, it’s a hard pill for some to swallow, that he could be so open – especially at the time – with his muses. Never the less his brave and beautiful portraits are a huge part of 20th century art and have inspired many artists since.

FRENCH K ALSEKI Situated in a former geisha owned tea-house on the idyllic Kamo River, Misoguigawa claims fame as one of the original fusion food restaurants. Chef Teruo Inoue is the mastermind behind the innovative amalgamation of both French and Japanese cuisine, honing a food-movement known as French Kaiseki. By all measures these cuisines are as far apart – geographically and culturally – as two gastronomies could ever be, but with his dexterity and artful plating Inoue breathes eastern flavour into traditional French food. SEEKING REFUGE Located in the master suite, between the Yves Delorme bed sheets and hammered bronze bedsides, is the exquisite statement headboard. Inspired by the methodology of the BeatWoven fabrics, the headboard was created as an embodiment of a piece of music. The almost wall-length board is made up of a series of upholstered checkerboard tiles, covered in complementing pastel tones, with each colour representing a pixelated form of a musical notation. The bedspread is again paired with intricate BeatWoven cushions, in complementary blush and neutral hues. Gold and platinum – the coveted benchmarks of a successful record – are two pertaining schemes for the additional bedrooms. Gold velvet columns line the wallboard in the third bedroom, framed by a sharp black mount and two wooden hexagonal bedsides. Two rare Tom Dixon lamps sit atop the brunette plinth-like side tables, their spots bowed, leaning over the stacks of musical periodicals and freshly cut hydrangeas below. The second bedroom is a silver rush; with platinum carpets, coordinating grey bedding and convex mirrors set in juxtaposition upon the beveled argentate wallpaper. A single brass flourish, in the form of a bespoke chair, sits in the corner of the room. Its bound strings – synonymous with those of a harp – furthers the musical stimulus and testifies the designer’s talent. THE CRESCENDO The Music Box development has been a triumph – a legacy for both A.LONDON and the London Centre of Contemporary Music.

C U S TO M S A N D C E R E M O N I E S Sometime around 1840 in a gilded drawing room at Woburn Abbey Anna Russell, 7th Duchess of Bedford, coined the much-favoured afternoon tea. 19th century dinner customs called for a very late supper, usually sometime around nine o’clock, leaving guests famished from the much earlier midday spread. One day, having shared complaints of a ‘sinking feeling’, the Duchess called for some light food and a pot of tea to be brought to her private chambers. This pre-evening snack became quite the habit, so much so, that the Duchess

F RO M E A S T TO W E S T The earliest notion of the teapot was born in China during the Sung Dynasty (920-1279). A passage from James Norwood Pratttell’s, The Tea Dictionary, describes a tall, water-pitcher shaped vessel with a spout, more popularly known by the Chinese as a wine ewer. Though this is much disputed as a teapot, as the Chinese did not knowingly use this as a vessel for tea. The more widely accepted is the Yixing. Sculpted from red or purple clay known as zisha – found in the Jiangsu province of China – this formal sculpture made way for the teapots of modern man. This clay made for the ultimate brewing experience as overtime the earthy spices would absorb into the tea, creating a rich and unique flavour. So much so, that it was encouraged that you would carry your own teapot and drink directly from the spout. Demand from Japan enabled the growth of earthenware in this region, but industrialisation, along with the destruction from World War Two, led to the closure of the iconic Jiangsu potteries. The dwindling supply of the Yixing led western inventors to create alternatives and more specifically the invention of hard paste porcelain. European inventors were dumbfounded by the methods of Asian ceramics. The earliest attempts, whilst similar, were fragile and often exploded when boiling water was poured into them. The breakthrough came from German inventor Johan Bottger, who devised the perfect formula for fine stoneware. This innovation allowed the industry more freedom and greater creativity and in 1700 both Britain and France furthered these techniques, incorporating them with Baroque and Rococo designs. Since then, craftsmen have developed these timeless methods and morphed the teapot into many different manifestations, much of which was later adopted by mainstream culture. Tea society remains a fundamental part of high and popular British life.

ed UNCONVENTIONAL INVESTMENTS Investment is ultimately a calculation of risk – without it, you don’t stand to gain much return. Risk is for the bold, the brave, those who are willing to go where others fear to tread.
FINANCIAL S W E E T E N E D BY R I S K
CASH FOR COCO Fashion is arguably one of the most accessible assets, but who or what to invest in is far trickier. Luxury re-retailers Vestiaire Collective have clarified a few exceptional shoes, bags and ready-to-wears that are already proving their worth. At number one was the eminent ‘Birkin’ bag by French fashion house Hermès. The icon purse peeked its re-sale value in 2015 at 137% and considering the starting offer for a worn bag sits around £6,500, you stand to make a killing for a mint condition vintage. Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, and Céline bags are also coveted, particularly qualitative vintages. Remember, opt for classics or rare limited editions – scarcity and desirability are key. When it comes to fancy footwear, you can’t go wrong with Chanel. The house’s iconic slingbacks and ballerina pumps are among the best, and though they have yet to prove overwhelming return at auction, experts believe that they are a maturing investment and that now is the time to invest. Another footwear brand to watch is Valentino and their signature Rockstuds collection. Since it’s launch in 2010, the Rockstuds have proven popular year after year, selling out every season to date – a safe choice if you are considering a shrewd shoe venture. The classic Rockstud Ankle Strap currently sells for around £650, but you’ll have to be stealthy in getting your hands on a pair. For a classic, ready-to-wear investment it has to be Burberry and their much-admired trench coat. With creative director Christopher Bailey at the helm, he intends to keep the spirit of the trench alive, notably last year when their glittering Christmas ad featured a cinematic retelling of it’s origin. Ironically the iconic beige is not so popular for re-sale, however irreplaceable pieces with extra embellishment, unique colours and or patterns prove a greater return on your investment.

S T R E E T A RT Street art, love it or hate it, is entwining itself into the high-arts scene and is becoming more digestible – and furthermore desirable – at auction. “The evidence is in the prices”, says Megan Mulrooney, head of private sales at Julien’s Auctions (said in an interview with Artsy, the online art network). Celebrated street artists such as Banksy, have influenced auction houses like Bonhams to host exclusive Urban Art specific hawks. In June this year (2017) Bonhams sold Banksy’s 24 x 24 inch Be In Charge, for an eye-watering £293,000. Of course getting your hands on an original Banksy now is as costly to acquire as the potential return and is no easy undertaking either. But that doesn’t mean giving up on Urban Art completely. One of the best places to snuff out fresh, new talent is at one of the many annual street art festivals. The crème de la crème include, MB6: Street Art in Morocco, Artscape in Sweden, Nuart in Norway, and Brockley in London. The best advice: keep an open mind and an opportunistic cheque book.

I N D U S T R I A L I N S P I R AT I O N We have always looked for symbols to inspire and fulfil us, from ornate basilicas and allegorical marble marvels, to revolution-inspiring speakers and establishment-defying musicians. That which inspires and brings us together. Described as the, “Temple of Power”, Battersea Power Station – a cathedral of red brick and four smoke steeples – is as much an icon of the London skyline as St Paul’s Cathedral. Part of an imperative chronicle, this emblematic centre played an instrumental role in the revolution of the energy industry, by transferring ownership to the public for the first time in history. After three decades of closure and several hopeful bids of restoration, permission has been granted to undergo an estimated £9 billion renovation to the power station and surrounding area.

B E AT S O F B AT T E R S E A The grandeur of this building has always been a magnet for artists. A young Alfred Hitchcock granted the station its first cinematic debut back in 1936, with his film Sabotage – one of his earlier creations. British treasure The Beatles were also fascinated by this industrial image, featuring it in their 1965 film ‘Help!’. More recently it morphed into the shadowy backdrop for Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight; a bat-suited Christian Bale assumes his hench stance over a desolate warehouse (Battersea) planning his next big move. It’s not just the silver screen that is drawn to Battersea, in-fact arguably its most popular expenditure is its presence in the music industry. It was involved in worldwide hysteria back in 1977, when it played an integral part in Pink Floyd’s Animals album. The band’s pig-shaped inflatable, affectionately known as Algie, was attached to one of the station’s southern chimneys as part of a quirky statement image for the cover art, but plans went astray during the shoot as the 40-foot balloon broke loose and caused mass panic at Air Traffic Control. Above Algie’s piggy propaganda, Battersea was the band’s first choice for many reasons. In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Rodger Walters (the band’s leading man) told readers that he had always “loved the building, as a piece of architecture”.

THE MARKET “The Nine Elms area of Battersea has seen a complete renaissance over the last seven years as one of the most exciting regeneration areas in London, if not the UK”, says Charlie Olpin, Associate Director of BoxNine7. The regeneration of Battersea Power Station – along with the relocation of the American Embassy – has sent shock-waves throughout the property industry. This has reignited resident’s energy, as this perfect fusion of commercial and residential space comes to life in south west London. The new urban village will be home to approximately 25,000 people and will create 4,353 new homes as well as a plethora of bars, restaurants and other places of entertainment.
