Desperately Young Artists Who Died in Their Twenties Angela S. Jones and Vern G. Swanson Precocious talent seeps from each artist’s work, along with a sense of unfulfilled potential. Informative biographies detail their legacies, while their tragic deaths lead us to wonder what heights they might’ve reached, had their lives not been cut short. Richly illustrated, Desperately Young presents prime examples of each artist’s work, demonstrating how our cultural heritage is just a little narrower for their loss. From Europe to America to Japan and the Indian Subcontinent, the mid14-hundreds to the late 20th century, this book hails the acknowledged greats and introduces those who died before they could leave an indelible mark on history. A compendium of 111 artists who fell prey to sickness, warfare, heartbreak or bad luck, Desperately Young is the only book to provide an in-depth study of artists who died young.

Gauguin and the Impressionists The Ordrupgaard Collection Anne-Birgitte Fonsmark and Anna Ferrari Masterpieces of 19th-century French painting from the Ordrupgaard Collection in Copenhagen are the subject of this splendid publication. Drawn from the remarkable collection of the Danish insurance magnate and art lover Wilhelm Hansen, these works represent the very best of French Impressionism. Having already built up an impressive collection of Scandinavian art, Hansen made numerous acquisitions between 1916 and 1918 and saw his collection grow to include works by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Sisley, Courbet, Morisot, Matisse, Pissarro and – forming a particular highlight of the collection – a group of significant paintings by Paul Gauguin. With stunning reproductions of 60 works, the authors explore the history of the collection and provide detailed analysis of the works themselves.

Frank Bowling Mel Gooding Over the past decade, Frank Bowling has enjoyed belated attention and celebration, including a major Tate Britain retrospective in 2019. This comprehensive monograph, published in 2011, is now available in an updated and expanded edition. Born in British Guiana in 1934, Bowling arrived in England in his late teens, going on to study at the Royal College of Art alongside David Hockney and Derek Boshier. By the early 1960s he was recognised as an original force in the vibrant London art scene. Dividing his time between New York and London since the late 1960s, he has developed a unique style that combines aspects of American painterly abstraction with a treatment of light and space that consciously recollects the great English landscape painters Gainsborough, Turner and Constable. In a compelling text the art writer, critic and curator Mel Gooding hails Bowling as one of the finest British artists of his generation.

Francis Bacon Man and Beast Michael Peppiat, Stephen F. Eisenman, Catherine Howe, Anna Testar and Isabella Boorman Francis Bacon is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century. A major exhibition of his paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2021 explores the role of animals in his work not least the human animal. Having often painted dogs and horses, in 1969 Bacon first depicted bullfights. In this powerful series of works, the interaction between man and beast is dangerous and cruel, but also disturbingly intimate. Both are contorted in their anguished struggle, and the erotic lurks not far away: “Bullfighting is like boxing,” Bacon once said. “A marvellous aperitif to sex.” Twenty-two years later, a lone bull was to be the subject of his final painting. In this fascinating publication – a significant addition to the literature on Bacon – expert authors discuss Bacon’s approach to animals and identify his varied sources of inspiration, which included surrealist literature and the photographs of Eadweard Muybridge. They contend that, by depicting animals in states of vulnerability, anger and unease, Bacon was able to lay bare the role of instinctual behaviour in the human condition. Published to accompany a major exhibition at the RA in 2021.

Francis Bacon or The Measure of Excess Yves Peyré This comprehensive monograph details Bacon’s artistic journey, from his early design work in the 1920s to his disturbing, emotive triptychs of the 1980s. Tormented, twisted, and jarringly dissonant, Bacon’s divided vision of the world swung between civilisation and barbarism, beauty and ugliness, life and death. His study of classical culture and western mythology led him to depict darkly sublime worlds of violence and madness that intrigue as much as they evoke visceral disgust. This monograph begins with a biography, relating the life of Francis Bacon, his stories and inspirations; before delving into a sharp analysis of his work. Peyré’s personal connection with Bacon makes Francis Bacon a detailed and touching story, inviting the reader on a philosophical, poetic and artistic stroll through the artist’s mind.

Passion by Design The Art and Times of Tamara de Lempicka Baroness Kizette de Lempicka-Foxhall As F. Scott Fitzgerald portrayed the mad glories of the 1920s on the printed page, Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980) captured them on canvas. A seductive Garbo-esque beauty with an irresistible force of personality, this refugee of the Russian Revolution successively conquered Paris, Hollywood, and New York with coruscating portraits of the world’s rich and famous. Her Art Deco paintings earned for her a life more fabulously excessive than anything Fitzgerald dreamed of. Passion by Design, authored by Tamara de Lempicka’s own daughter, is an intimate look at a fascinating personality, and remains the best account of her life and work. This new edition is illustrated with vibrant colour reproductions of her finest paintings, as well as exclusive photographs from family albums. An additional chapter by Victoria de Lempicka, the artist’s granddaughter, explores the everevolving legacy of Tamara de Lempicka, from the record eight-figure price fetched by her painting La Tunique Rose in November 2019 to the new musical based on her life. 9780789213754 Abbeville Press 229 x 178mm. 208pp., 100 col. Saints in Art & History Fernando Lanzi, Gioia Lanzi Saints in Art & History presents the lives of some 150 saints in chronological order, from the family of Jesus and the early Christian martyrs, to the founders of the great religious orders, to modern holy figures like Mother Teresa. Watercolor A History Marie-Pierre Salé The term watercolour calls to mind atmosphere, luminosity, and immediacy – qualities that derive directly from the quick-drying, translucent nature of water-based pigments. In Watercolor: A History, Louvre curator Marie-Pierre Salé provides an authoritative and beautifully illustrated account of this versatile and widely beloved artistic medium. Salé’s incisive text traces the development of watercolour from the 13th to the 20th century in Europe and the United States, encompassing every type of work – from plein-air sketches to finished studio pieces – and a wide variety of artists. Here are Dürer’s detailed animal studies, Turner’s landscapes, Cézanne’s tireless explorations, Sargent’s lightdappled sketches, O’Keeffe’s pioneering abstractions.

AWARD WINNING SERIES
Kiki Smith Hearing You with My Eyes Edited by Laurence Schmidlin The art of Kiki Smith is a meditation on the body. The American artist, born 1954, observes every aspect of corporeal materiality and the conditions shaping the time on earth of the body political, spiritual, domestic, fleshly, base, and universal. She uses a wide range of materials and craft techniques, but takes a particular interest in the fragility and expressive potential of paper and its resemblance to skin. Flesh is also suggested by wax and bronze in sculptures, often cast from living models including herself. This new monograph focuses on the sensory dimension of Kiki Smith’s oeuvre that requires active percipience and a sharpening of our senses. Richly illustrated with around 100 of her drawings, prints, sculptures, and videos, the essays confront the reader with his or her own physicality and invites a reflection of our role within our entire environment. 9783858818676 Scheidegger & Spiess 210 x 165mm., 192pp., 120 col. John McConnell: Design Robert McCrum
Susanna Bauer With a text by Valentina De Pasca
John McConnell’s list of collaborators includes many household names -–Boots, Faber & Faber, Halfords, Clarks, John Lewis. The man behind the Biba logo (for which he won the D&AD Silver in 1969), the logo of the National Grid and the covers of a Penguin student textbook series from the early ‘70s has exerted a quiet influence over British design since the sixties. His awards alone speak to his prowess: the Prince Philip Designers’ Prize (2002) and the title of RDI (Royal Designer of Industry, 1987) among them.
Susanna Bauer presents the artist’s work to an international audience for the first time in book form. The essential ingredients of Bauer’s artistic production are the ephemeral natural elements that she encounters during walks and hikes in Cornwall, UK, where she lives and works. They are leaves, stones, twigs… elements that become the heart of more elaborate creations rendered with crochet. Bauer’s leaves are airy sculptures in which the artist pursues a balance between strength and fragility.
Part biography, part showcase for some of McConnell’s most celebrated designs, this book gathers McConnell’s exclusive redesign for Faber & Faber – a revolutionary new approach to book covers from the early 1980s.
The theme of the relationship between art and nature, and the ensuing interconnections, are investigated both through Bauer’s original work and in an introductory essay that analyses her oeuvre within the broader context of the history of art.
