want to challenge the “hero” narrative by shifting the axis of the three plantation mansions—all built by slave labor—and correct the racist “Master” site planning principles deployed by Jefferson, Washington, and Madison. This new proposal combines the three Virginiabased sites into one image that will change how people experience slave plantations by reframing the ground away from the carefully curated mansion lawns and centering the slave house as the primary experience. Our proposal acknowledges the slave trade waterways and honors the surrounding terrain worked by slave labor. The plantation’s central axis—once a representation of the oppressor—is amended.
