NOTE ON MODERN WORKS OF ART

Travellers often mention modern paintings in various collections. Every effort has been made to trace these; they have often been moved. Where a new location is known it is indicated; where nothing of any such work can be found in modern catalogues of the artist in question – and the attributions are often fanciful – nothing more is said; where the work is still in the same collection, it is asterisked.

Currency

One other thing is indispensable for understanding the many references to prices: the CURRENCY system. For most of the time the following is valid:

10 bajocchi (copper) = 1 paolo (silver) = 6d Eng.

100 bajocchi = 1 scudo (silver) = 5 livres / francs

2 scudi = 1 sequin (gold) = 10/- stg = 1 ducat

4 scudi (4.5 by 1780s) = 1 stg.
