“Feng shui meets modern minimalism” This stunning home rises above the surrounding residential area of Damansara Heights in Kuala Lumpur, and provides a stylish home not only for the present but for the long term. Built on two plots of land, this house is designed to cater for a young couple and their extended family, with sufficient space and flexibility to accommodate a growing family, as well as rooms for grandparents, guest rooms, and home offices. The home’s design approach adheres to feng shui orientations and guidelines, and also explores the idea of a modern minimalist form adopting the principles of tropical architecture and design. Essentially the resulting design consists of two rectilinear boxes, placed offset on top of each 12

other to create ancillary spaces. This shift created a covered veranda on the ground floor and a terrace on the first level. The design took into account Kuala Lumpur’s constant tropical heat. Deep recessed façades and louvers shield the interior of the house from the hot sun, particularly on the front northwest façade, where the sun is strongest. The depth of the building is restricted to ensure there is sufficient and effective fresh air crossing through the house. Internal voids and staircases are designed as heat stacks to extract warm air upward to be vented through openings. Large floor-to-ceiling doors open to landscaped gardens, providing additional crossventilation for passive cooling and a landscaped garden provides shade on the southwestern side. C-HOUSE

“Clever design results in a spacious and luxurious holiday residence, with a brightly lit internal space while also providing shade against the heat of the sun This contemporary and luxurious holiday home enjoys a spectacular location on a sloping terrain surrounded by lush tropical forest and mountains, and set in a gated residential community. The client asked the architects to design a dream holiday house, along with specific requirements, including a large space for a private gallery, ample space throughout the house to display additional

art works, and an expansive car garage. The design was restricted by the gated community rules that required all houses to look similar and be limited to a certain size. Working within these constraints, the designers achieved a modern and spacious residential home, with views to the mountains maximized in each room.

The daytime living areas are on the ground floor, with access to the garden, the large terrace, and pool, while the bedrooms are on the first floor, for privacy and safety. The basement functions as the entertainment room, with plenty of natural sunlight. The private gallery was added to house the owner’s impressive collection of art works, while the pathways linking the internal spaces act as an extension of the private gallery. The large garage is naturally ventilated, and includes a car lift. Expansive glazing allows natural light inside the house, while the big clear sliding partitions and high ceilings aid with cross-ventilation, helping to keep the internal space cool in the humidity. Large canopies function as eaves for the tropical rain as well as shade, taking inspiration from traditional Thai architecture. Cantilevering slabs shield the interior from direct sunlight, helping the house to be more energy efficient.

“Organic roofs allow the villa to blend in harmoniously with its natural surroundings” Designed as a holiday retreat for the owner and his friends, Four Leaves Villa is situated in a forest, and sits harmoniously within its natural surroundings, its roof echoing the form of gently twisted leaves. Careful consideration was given to the placement of the living areas, which comprise three interconnected volumes. The living and dining rooms face southeast, allowing for greater natural light while the bedroom and bathroom are oriented toward the forest, resulting in increased privacy. The main living areas have large glazed windows opening onto a wooden deck, allowing uninterrupted views to the forest outside. 28

The interior palette harnesses traditional Japanese colors, from the traditional warmth of wood to the clean harmonious Shoji paper-esque shade. The curved surface of the roofs develop further into a combination of concave or convex, providing a variable cross section of spaces from expansive to more introverted and compact. The overall effect is one of tranquility with a nod to traditional Japanese aesthetics. The villa sits lightly among the trees, almost as if it were a fallen leaf blown in place by the wind.
