hen Ziggy played the Marquee Club in Soho, London, in October 1973, most of those invited to the small venue did not realise that this would be the last performance David Bowie would ever give as Ziggy Stardust. Terry O’Neill, celebrated photographer, was given unprecedented access to document the event. O’Neill captured Bowie and his crew backstage as they went through costume changes, and Bowie transformed into the character he’d soon put to rest. On stage, dodging television cameras and lights, O’Neill snapped the incredible stage presence for which Bowie and his crew had become renowned. O’Neill remembers of Bowie: ‘He became a character on stage. As much as a person takes a role in a play for the West End or on Broadway, learning the lines, putting

on the costumes—this was, I think, the way Bowie treated his stage. This night at the Marquee, I witnessed a modern-day Hamlet—and it was Ziggy Stardust’. Award-winning music writer Daniel Rachel’s interviews with key contributors of the day, including O’Neill, Ava Cherry, Amanda Lear and Geoff MacCormack, along with new insights and memories from fans who were in the audience and witnessed this incredible moment. n 1967, a 20-year-old David Jones decided to change his name to avoid confusion with the lead singer of the Monkees. He decided on ‘Bowie’. By this time, Jones had been playing music for five years, appearing in and out of various bands, singing rock and roll at local youth gatherings, any pub that would have him and even a few weddings. Jones joined the band The Konrads, but then soon left them for The King Bees. After a few more stops and starts, Jones became Bowie and met Derek ‘Dek’ Fearnley. David Bowie enlisted Fearnley to help record an album. Reportedly learning by studying the Observer Book of Music, the two young musicians practised, wrote and hung out at the home of Fearnley’s brother, Gerald. ‘My brother always loved music’ remembers Gerald Fearnley. ‘He’d always have people back to the house to practice or write songs. I remember waking up in the mornings, never knowing who’d be sleeping in the front room. David was often sacked out on the couch. But he was always very polite.’ Gerald Fearnley was a working photographer in 1967. “I was a still life photographer, working on my own, in a studio right off of Oxford Street. I don’t remember how it happened, but

I was enlisted to take photographs of David for the cover. I was probably the only person he knew with a studio and a camera.’ When David Bowie by David Bowie was released on June 1, 1967—the same day as The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band—little, if anything, happened. Nothing charted and the band parted ways. Now—fifty years since the original photo session and release of David Bowie’s debut album—the unseen photos by Gerald Fearnley are presented here for the first time. These whimsical, youthful images capture the artist as a young man only a few years before he’d transform himself into Ziggy Stardust and launch a career that would become one of the most successful and influential in the history of modern music. But at that time, he was just starting out—creating his first persona: David Bowie.

n 2015, vinyl sales in the US increased by 30%—a raise for the tenth year in succession—and 1.29 million vinyl albums were sold in the UK in 2014, the first time the million mark has been surpassed since 1996. Vinyl, once thought to be a dying market, is now facing a major revival. Pop culture writer and historian Jennifer Otter Bickerdike interviews some of our most iconic artists, including hip-hop stars, indie legends, DJs, producers, album cover designers, photographers, label founders and record store owners. Each superstar and super-fan talks about their own experiences of vinyl and what it means to them, and the importance of its re-emergence—seemingly against all odds—as a physical format in the era of the digital economy. Why Vinyl Matters is part history, part future forecasting, part nostalgia and all celebration. A collection of more than 25 interviews, all illustrated with photos, sidebars, quotes, album covers, outtakes and much more. This is the book for anyone who has ever gone to the store and bought music on vinyl.

Cy Twombly Edited by Jonas Storsve

T

he American artist Cy Twombly (1928–2011) was one of the seminal artists of the second half of the twentieth century, with a complex oeuvre extending over six decades. His work brilliantly fused the legacy of American abstract expressionism with the intellectual rigor

of classical European and Mediterranean culture, reflecting his extensive reading in history, classical literature, and mythology. Twombly’s artistic development is traced through more than 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs that span his entire career, including three major history painting cycles—Nine Discourses on Commodus (1963), Fifty Days at Iliam (1978), and Coronation of Sesostris (2000). From his early works at the beginning of the 1950s which were characterised by the interweaving of text with his signature scrawled lines, to his final, vibrantly coloured paintings, this survey underscores Twombly’s career as a series of cycles in which he invented painting anew. Polyphonic in conception, Cy Twombly presents a range of views with essays that shed light on the various aspects and phases of his body of work. It includes reflections by contemporary artists (Sally Mann, Edmund de Waal, and Katharina Grosse, among others) as well as recollections by Twombly’s assistant Nicola Del Roscio. Together these multiple voices bring Cy Twombly to life, illuminating his creative process and the humanity that underlies his work.

this, it is often overshadowed by abstract art. This book presents the very first overview of British realist painting of the period, showcasing outstanding works from private and public collections across the UK. Of the forty artists featured in the show, many were major figures in the 1920s and 1930s but later passed out of fashion as abstraction and Pop Art became the dominant trends in the post-war years. In the last decade their work has re-emerged and interest in them has grown. Interwar realist art embraces a number of different styles, but is characterised by fine drawing, meticulous craftsmanship, a tendency towards classicism and an aversion to impressionism and visible brushwork. Artists such as Gerald Leslie Brockhurst, Meredith Frampton, James Cowie and Winifred Knights combine fastidious ‘Old Master’ detail with 1920s modernity. Stanley Spencer spans various camps while Lucian Freud’s early work can be seen as a realist coda that continued into the 1940s and beyond. Featuring many Scottish and women artists, this book promises a fascinating insight into this captivating period of British art. ACC DISTRIBUTION AUTUMN 2017

J

asper Johns (b.1930) is regarded as one of the most influential American artists of the last sixty years. When he broke onto the New York art scene in the 1950s, Johns and his lover Robert Rauschenberg established a decisive new direction in an art world that had been dominated by the abstract expressionists. Johns’s striking use of popular iconography, such as flags, numbers and maps, rendered with a distinctive textural, painterly surface, made a colossal impact. In this handsomely illustrated study, skilled writers examine Johns’s pioneering oeuvre and offer a detailed overview of the career and international significance of this subtlest of craftsmen. This book accompanies the exhibition ‘Jasper Johns’, 23 September –10 December 2017, at the Royal Academy of Arts, London.

his is a new survey of the contribution of Polish-born artists to British visual culture based on Ben Uri’s exhibition of the same title. It narrates the story of the Polish community in Britain and Poland’s recent turbulent history through the lens of art, tracing the complex stories of Polish-born artists—both Jews and non-Jews—who fled successive regimes, were variously persecuted, imprisoned and interned, and crossed continents. But it also looks at Polish people born to today’s world, who have come to Britain to study or develop professionally. It brings together a century of artworks and archival material by both celebrated and lesser-known Polish-born artists.

t the age of 88, Chagall produced fifty black-and-white lithographs, illustrating The Tempest. They were printed alongside Shakespeare’s play in 1975. The loose leaves of this unbound volume allow the lithographs to be taken out and framed. Far from being Renaissance aristocrats, the figures are Chagall’s familiar protagonists, from his own personal mythography. The tempest

itself is transformed into the symbolic tempest that engulfed Chagall’s life in the first half of the twentieth century, turning the Jewish people into refugees.

his new monograph on the important and influential 20th-century British artist David Bomberg (1890–1957) accompanies a major new exhibition curated by the authors, due to open at Pallant House, Chichester (October 2017, touring to Laing Gallery, Newcastle and Ben Uri Gallery, London.) The monograph is a comprehensive yet succinct account, providing an informed and accessible overview of Bomberg’s career and achievements, combining a biographical narrative with an analytical and interpretative approach. It discusses and illustrates Bomberg’s five key periods and motifs including early, experimental modernism pre the First World War; War artist’s commissions and immediate postwar works; major Jerusalem landscapes;

portraiture, and particularly selfportraiture; and the flowering of his mature landscapes. The book is also notable for its inclusion of new material relating to Bomberg’s Jewish background, and its sumptuous illustrations.

his book sheds light on the oeuvre of one of East Asia’s most significant contemporary artists. Casting an eye across Lee Ufan’s paintings and his three-dimensional oeuvre, from the beginning of his career through to his current work, this volume seeks to understand how Lee Ufan, who has espoused minimising intervention since he began making art, attempts to ‘receive’ the world in its natural, unadulterated state.

he work of the South Korean artist, Lee Lee Nam, exists at a crossroads between tradition and modernity, east and west, authenticity and duplication. He often refers to art history and thereby creates a dialogue between media technology and its cultural basis. Lee Lee Nam lifts the barriers between cultures and time periods, and questions the way we deal with art.

Why Brands Matter Stephen Bayley

N

ietzsche said ‘all of life is a question of taste’. And he was right. But nowadays all of life is also a question of branding. A brand is not something concocted by graphic designers and marketing consultants: it is ‘the intangible aspects of an intangible thing’, as Massimo Vignelli (who re-branded the New York subway) explained. Brand values are the expectations and associations that all successful (and, indeed, unsuccessful) products and services possess. And now they are under threat from Health & Safety. Ugly, generic packaging for cigarettes will soon be mandatory. Bans on attractive presentation for sugar, alcohol and cars will logically follow. Simultaneously, brands are vulnerable as conventional advertising becomes redundant and younger affluent consumers suffer from consumer fatigue. With Signs of Life, Stephen Bayley makes the case that far from being pernicious, manipulative voodoo, brands and branding should be regarded as the contemporary equivalent of folk art.

Taste

The Secret Meaning of Things Stephen Bayley

H

ow do we define taste? The only certainty is that it shifts and changes, sometimes abruptly. With the explosion of vulgar consumerism in the mid-nineteenth century, the Victorians seized upon the notion of good taste as a way of codifying middle-class mores. A century later, to talk about taste had become almost taboo, since judgements made about dress, manners, food and art can often be painfully revealing. And today? When this classic text was first published in 1991, Stephen Bayley illuminated the nuances and niceties of our mercurial understanding of taste. In this new edition, he ranges far and wide to bring us exquisitely up to date.

The Essential Marilyn Monroe

Milton H. Greene, 50 Sessions Joshua Greene

M

ilton H. Greene (1922–1985), famous for his fashion photography and celebrity portraits from the golden age of Hollywood, met Marilyn Monroe on a photo shoot for Look magazine in 1953. The pair developed an instant rapport, quickly becoming close friends and ultimately business partners. In 1954, after helping her get out of her studio contract with 20th Century Fox, they created Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc. Milton and Marilyn were much more then business partners, Marilyn became a part of the Greene family. By the time their relationship had ended in 1957, the pair had produced two feature films, in addition to more than 5,000 photographs of the iconic beauty. There was magic in Milton and Marilyn’s working relationship. The trust and confidence they had in each other’s capabilities was on full display in each photo. Greene passed in 1985, thinking his life’s work was succumbing to the ravages of time. His eldest son, Joshua, began a journey to meticulously restore his father’s legacy. A photographer himself, Joshua spent years researching ways to restore his father’s photographs as well as cataloguing and promoting Milton’s vast body of work all over the world. As a result, Joshua established ‘The Archives’ a company committed to the restoration and

preservation of photography. After spending nearly two decades restoring his father’s archive, Joshua Greene and his company are widely regarded as one of the leaders in photographic restoration and have been at the forefront of the digital imaging and large-format printing revolution. Now Joshua Greene, in conjunction with Iconic Images, presents The Essential Marilyn Monroe: Milton H. Greene, 50 Sessions. With 280 photographs, including many never-before published and unseen images, newly scanned and restored classics, as well as images that have appeared only once in publication, Greene’s Marilyn Monroe archive can finally be viewed as it was originally intended when these pictures were first produced more than 60 years ago. These classic sessions cover Monroe at the height of her astonishing beauty and meteoric fame. From film-sets to the bedroom, at home and at play, Joshua has curated a lasting tribute to the work of a great photographer and his greatest muse. Poignant and powerful, joyful and stunning—these breathtaking images of an icon stand above all the rest and The Essential Marilyn Monroe: Milton H. ver 15,000 Peruvians disappeared. More than 60,000 were mercilessly killed. These are individuals who Jonathan Moller will not allow us to forget. We are introduced to the victims of Peru once again, through his stark and raw photography, as Moller trawls this country in search of answers. Where have the missing gone? Can so many thousands of people be hidden? What do they do when they feel cold? Where do they find shelter? What do they eat when they are hungry? By humanising those who have been lost, Moller’s photography unearths a new dimension to this tragedy.

Streets of the World

Jeroen Swolfs, Introduction Mark Blaisse

T

wo hundred countries; one street each; seven years of travelling and collecting photos, stories, facts and figures about each country. This is not just another photography book. It reveals everything that a street means to society: education, wisdom, youth, experience, happiness, stories, food, and so much more. This is the raw material of life, drawn directly from the experiences of the Belgian photographer Jeroen Swolfs. Seeing the street as a unifying theme, he travelled in search of that one street in each place—sometimes by a harbour or a railway station—that comprised the country as a whole. Each stunning image conveys culture, colours, rituals, even the history of the city and country where he found them. Swolfs sees the street as a universal meeting place, a platform of crowds, a centre of news and gossip, a place of work, and a playground for children. ACC DISTRIBUTION AUTUMN 2017

he photographer Michael Collins, armed with a large-format camera, has spent years discovering traces of the past contained in the marshland landscapes just outside of London. The Hoo Peninsula is situated between the estuaries of the rivers Thames and Medway, one hour by car from central London. This narrow stretch of land is mainly made up of sand and clay hills. Nature there seems strangely inanimate, and the landscape is full of contrasts. But technology and industry are encroaching on the grazing sheep, the saltmarsh and the mud flats. Pylons dot the wilderness, in which shipwrecks have become an integral part of the scenery. Michael Collins visited the Hoo peninsula over several years, producing pictures inspired by the landscapes of ‘plein air’ painting. With

their rich details, they deliberately follow the tradition of nineteenth century record pictures—archival images that were commissioned by the government to document the progress of industrialisation.

enowned for their sophisticated portraiture—a mixture of painting and photography—Pierre & Gilles magnify the ordinary and re-enchant the world by surrounding the every-day in metafictional pictorial environments informed by mythology, the Bible, and fairy tales. Yet their symbolic and surreal back-at-you work is resolutely set in the contemporary world with the influences of art, cinema and popular culture clearly present. ir Edwin Lutyens is widely regarded as one of Britain’s greatest architects. In a career of more than 50 years, spanning both the Victorian and modern eras, Lutyens was prolific. His work ranged from great country houses, city commercial office buildings, his famous First World War memorials across Europe and Britain, and his magnum opus designs for New Delhi, built during the 1920s and 1930s. Lutyens’ most celebrated works remain his magnificent country houses that so frequently adorned the pages of Country Life magazine, and in particular his houses of the period from the 1890s and 1900s. Sir Edwin Lutyens: The Arts & Crafts Houses brings together for the first time in new, wide-format all-colour photography,

the definitive collection of over 40 of Lutyens’ great houses, in which Lutyens ingeniously blended the style of the arts and crafts movement with his own inventive interpretation of the classical language of architecture. The book features over 500 stunning current photographs, together with floor plans of the houses, and a fresh reinterpretation of Lutyens’ enduring architectural genius.

The American House

100 Contemporary Homes Introduction by Ian Volner

T

he American House is an exceedingly diverse collection of contemporary residential designs in the United States. This book follows the successful title European House, likewise a gorgeous collection of new residential architecture. The American House contains cutting-edge residential designs by leading architects from across the United States. Stunning colour photographs and plans underline the sensitivity of today’s architects to the natural environment, as well as the care and attention paid to interior design and everyday living. This new volume features an extraordinary variety in style, sophistication, affordability, site and landscape, with an emphasis on sustainability practices in both design and construction. Each project illustrates how architects adapt their signature styles to accommodate the challenges posed by local topography and variations in climate, along with a sharp focus on optimum strategies for sustainable living.

A lively introduction by critic Ian Volner comments on the many trends, often contradictory, that characterise the architecture of houses in the 2010s. In its sweeping scope, this book considers the present and points to the future of residential design in the United States.

It’s Not Easy Being Green Ken Yeang and Tuck Leong

I

t’s Not Easy Being Green tells the reader, quite simply, that ‘green architecture’ is not as simple as many of its promoters expect. It is not solely about energy efficiency or cultivating different levels of vegetation. It is an extensive dedication, involving cautious action that takes into account the needs of both the natural and the built environments. Ken Yeang’s work demonstrates a comprehensive set of strategies making green architecture feasible and practical for architects and professionals from other fields, to understand the importance of saving the world from environmental devastation. The book intends to raise awareness and concern on environmental issues, and suggests how architecture can be designed now in favour of a benign living environment for the future.

Mass Timber Design and Research Susan Jones

ass Timber: Design and Research presents new research and design work with mass timber, a new construction technology, well known in Europe, but relatively unfamiliar to the United States. Leading the mass timber design dialogue in the US, the author, Susan Jones, an architect in Seattle, Washington, has been pioneering the new, innovative use of wood over the past six years, since she built her own family’s house from cross-laminated timber in 2015 in a neighbourhood in Seattle. The book presents her Seattle firm, her family, and her University of Washington students’ years of research and design. Opening with the story of three generations of her family’s own sustainable forest practices, the book presents research into Pacific Northwest forestry, timber and crosslaminated timber manufacturing practices, to carbon analysis and carbon comparisons between standard building construction assemblies and technologies.

he bench: a functional object that rarely features at the forefront of our minds, even when we are sitting on one in a garden. And yet benches have surprising significance, regarding the specific places where they operate, and in a more general sense. The bench is more than a convenient sitting point. It is the domain where aesthetics, garden history, architecture, spatiality and subjectivity interfere. The bench acts as a powerful visual machine and regulates the reception of surrounding landscapes by its visitors. By transmitting verbal messages (through inscriptions), citing other benches and being part of a complex walk circuit, by providing rest and inviting its users to discover new aspects of the site, the bench is a highly polysemic element of a garden, which orients and disorients the visitor simultaneously.

Robert Venturi’s Rome

Frederick Fisher, Stephen Harby

obert Venturi’s Rome is a guidebook to the city of Rome, seen through the eyes of Robert Venturi, reinterpreted by two subsequent Rome Prize fellows and architects, Frederick Fisher and Stephen Harby. Published in 1966, Venturi looks at architecture, landscape and art as different manifestations of common themes. For students, the book is fundamental to the development of any young architect’s outlook on architecture. Venturi wrote the book following a two-year Rome Prize fellowship at the American Academy in Rome, and there is no doubt that the city had a profound influence on his thinking. He used many buildings in Rome as examples to illustrate his theories. From the Pantheon, through works by his favourite artist, Michelangelo, and on to 20th-century buildings by Armando Brasini and Luigi Moretti, Venturi reveals Rome as a complex and contradictory city.

or his entire professional life, British architect Cedric Price (1934–2003) reflected on the mechanisation of society and its effect on people’s lives. In the 1960s and 1970s Price searched for a new language in modern architecture. His multifaceted, interdisciplinary approach and his sense of humour and self-irony, also with regard to his own profession, lead him into the fields of art and of social and natural sciences. Tanja Herdt’s new book on the work and life of Cedric Price for the first time offers a comprehensive demonstration of his architectural concepts and social visions. Herdt focuses on his view of the city as a socio-technical system, the influence of product and everyday culture on architecture, and the role of science

and technology in architectural design. Based on extensive research and drawing from rich and largely unpublished material, she features some of Price’s well-known projects, such as Fun Palace (1961) or Potteries Thinkbelt (1964), in context with her new findings. Herdt’s thorough analysis of his lesser-known works from the 1970s, including McAppy (1973–1975) and The Generator (1976), also questions the common perception of Cedric Price as an ‘anti-architect’.

Walters Way & Segal Close The Architect Walter Segal and London’s Self-build Communities

Alice Grahame, Taran Wilkhu

alters Way and Segal Close are two tiny roads in Lewisham, south London. The twenty homes they contain are unusual, both in the way they look and in the way they were conceived and built. Designed by German-born modernist architect Walter Segal, they were part of a council-run scheme that allowed ordinary people to build their own homes. Thirty years on they are still standing and have been adapted to meet the needs of today’s residents. This book by two residents of Walters Way and Segal Close, journalist Alice Grahame and photographer Taran Wilkhu, tells the story of how the streets came to be built and of the estate’s development since. Neither Grahame nor Wilkhu are the initial inhabitants of their respective homes, but when they moved in they both became instantly fascinated by the story of how and why they were made. The book was created in collaboration with the occupants of both streets, who all opened their houses and shared their insights of life on a Segal estate.

Finding Brutalism A Photographic Survey of PostWar British Architecture Simon Phipps, Hilar Stadler, Andreas Hertach (eds)

F

or more than thirty years, British photographer Simon Phipps has been documenting the rebuilding of Britain after the Second World War through the work of architects. His archive documents Britain’s post-war modernism and new brutalism in architecture and recognises the architect’s enormous contribution to the transformation of the political and social landscape of the country in the aftermath of WWII. Significant building on a mass scale was realised and new building techniques were pioneered alongside innovative layouts, resulting in buildings of outstanding quality, displaying radical new forms. The construction ranged from public and private housing, to schools and universities, churches, museums, galleries, commercial and, ultimately, entire new towns. This new book features some 80 of Simon Phipps’s photographs of buildings in all parts of England completed

between the 1950s until the 1980s. They create a confrontation of buildings and architectural fragments, evoking a distinct atmosphere of brutalism. An essay contextualises brutalism in architecture from a British perspective and considers Phipps’ contribution to its reception. An illustrated catalogue of featured buildings provides full details of each item, making the book also a handy travel guide for architecture lovers and professionals. This book accompanies the exhibition Finding Brutalism, at the Museum im Bellpark, Kriens, Switzerland, 26 August to 5 November 2017.

A Guided Visit to the Houses of Modernity Iñaki Ábalos

n An

intellectual introduction to iconic ideas of modern living

W

ith his book The Good Life, Iñaki Ábalos takes the reader on a tour of seven iconic 20th-century houses. Some of them were actually built, others merely imagined or film-sets: Mies van der Rohe’s House with Three Patios, Martin Heidegger’s cabin in the Black Forest, the houses from Jacques Tati’s movie Mononcle, Picasso’s house in Cannes, the New York loft of Andy Warhol and the Factory, the self-build house from Buster Keaton’s movie One Week, the house in David Hockney’s painting A Bigger Splash. Ábalos’s selection represents a variety of concepts for living. It is based on a clear archetypal assignment of a place to a particular modern way of living. He analyses each house from key philosophical points of view. He demonstrates relations between architectural concepts, philosophical schools, and various approaches to planning and designing, constructing,

Ábalos ranks among the most significant contemporary teachers of architecture

and inhabiting a space. Ábalos offers an intellectual introduction to these icons, rather than a manual for the design of residential architecture. He focuses on the 20th century’s radical pluralism, rather than celebrating modernism as a triumph of positivism. This new and revised edition of the book, first published in 2001 by Gustavo Gili and out of print for many years now, makes the significant contribution to the perennial discourse on concepts of living available again. (1900–1968). Based on an exploration of his writings and a close study of his built and unbuilt projects, it unveils and analyses Neumann’s approach to architecture in the context of post-war modernism and the establishment of the State of Israel from 1948 onwards. Rafi Segal’s book brings to attention again this highly significant, yet largely forgotten figure who contributed vastly to establishing modernism in Israel and who had a lasting impact on the new country’s architectural culture. At his time, Neumann was equally renowned and controversial for his original designs that differed from modernist mainstream. Space Packed is divided into four chapters that discuss the development of Neumann’s architectural theories, methodologies, and built work during the 1950s and 1960s, against the backdrop of contemporary architectural discourse and the nation-building demands of the new State of Israel. It also features a chronologically organised and illustrated catalogue of Neumann’s buildings and designs, including a vast number of previously unpublished photographs, drawings and sketches. rich Strenger (1922–1993), an author, photographer, designer, and illustrator, left his mark on the look of Porsche during the company’s formative years in the early ‘50s and ‘60s with a design language that, for the most part, continues to bear his signature to this day. He also created countless print products for this successful sports car maker, including Christophorus Zeitschrift für die Freunde des Hauses Porsche, the brainchild of Erich Strenger and Richard von Frankenberg. Over the course of a collaborative relationship with Porsche spanning more than thirty years, the graphic artist, who started out working alone, founded an advertising agency in the heart of Stuttgart with a staff of up to eleven permanent employees. There, Strenger would later create countless racing posters, much like those he had designed in his early days working for Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG as a freelancer in the early ‘50s. Strenger was instrumental in influencing and moulding the image of the Porsche brand as we know it today. This book showcases a firstever comprehensive collection of his

work, created over the course of his collaboration with Porsche between 1951 and 1988. This monographic and monothematic publication brings the noteworthy highlights of his work to the forefront, focusing attention on the designer’s approaches and methods.

imon de Burton journeys through some of the most coveted cars of the twentieth century. From the Alfa Romeo 6C to the Porsche 996 GT3, the author has chosen at least ten cars from each decade from the 1930s to the early 2000s, his choices made from the perspective of the enthusiast and collector. All are considered ‘milestone’ cars and all have risen substantially in value in the past five to ten years. They are not all necessarily the fastest, rarest or most valuable cars, but they are all highly significant and highly regarded. These are the cars that should have been bought when they were new and kept for the future— now that they're truly desired. Simon de Burton writes about cars and luxury for The Financial Times, The Telegraph, The Spectator, GQ, Vogue China and Vanity Fair. He lives on Dartmoor, Devon.

his sumptuous book showcases the work of women jewellers in the twentieth century. Beginning with arts & crafts jewellers in Britain, Europe and North America, the author then examines the key figures and movements of the pre-war period including Coco Chanel’s legendary ‘Bijoux de Diamants’ exhibition of 1932, the designs of Suzanne Belperron and the roles of Jeanne Toussaint at Cartier and Renée Puissant at Van Cleef & Arpels. From the 1950s to the present day, a wide range of international designers are examined in detail with many examples of their work clearly illustrated. The author focuses on themes associated with jewellery, including colour, light, proportion, nature and legends. Among the many names included are Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe (designer for Georg Jensen), Margaret De Patta, Wendy Ramshaw, Angela Cummings, Paloma Picasso, Marina B, Lydia Courteille and Michelle Ong. marvellous array of images, from archived photographs and sketches that have not been seen since the ‘60s, and the work of 20th-century photographers such as Ugo Mulas and Antonia Mulas, to modern shoots by Alexander English

A

rt as Jewellery is a visually stunning introduction to jewellery made by the titans of twentieth and twenty-first century art. From Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso, through to Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry, the great figures of modern art have all turned both thought and talent to jewellery. Often, they have eschewed the traditional jeweller’s preoccupation with material value and provenance, more concerned with the conceptual or aesthetic significance of their work. As is fitting for a book that covers a range of artists, every image is as striking as it is unique. By using contemporary pictures, Art as Jewellery develops a chronological timeline of jewellery presentation. Its pages are home to a stunning variety of design sketches and photographs. Some were shot by renowned 20th century photographers, such as Ugo Mulas and Antonia Mulas, while others have been buried in archives for decades, unseen since the ‘60s. By contrast, modern works have been given model treatment by top photographer Alexander English, making this book a glamorous blend of new and classic jewellery art. Author Louisa Guinness, collector and gallery owner, provides insightful commentary on each artist and their work. Full-page colour photographs and

sketches, some showing the artist at work in the studio, or with their muse, accompany each profile. Louisa also explores each artist in the context of the genre’s evolution, looking at the key exhibitions that have shaped the interest of artists and collectors. This book will be of interest to jewellery and art lovers alike.

multitude of colourful and naïve biblical and other religious pottery figures found their way into 19th century Victorian homes in Britain. They were bought by tradesmen, shop-keepers, clerks, teachers and the more skilled workingclass people. This book tells the story of these Staffordshire pottery figures, which sold in their thousands to stand on the mantelpieces of Christian families, both Protestant and Catholic. Three chapters provide a social history context: the religious background, an assessment of who purchased the figures, the Victorian home and how it was furnished. The final four chapters review the pottery figures themselves, which are based on the Old Testament, the New

Brandt—a central figure of the art deco movement. Trained at Gouffé, in Paris, in the 1910s, Prou took part in most of the Salons d’Automne and the Salons des artistes décorateurs before commanding attention at the Exposition international des arts décoratifs of 1925. Firmly established by major public and private commissions, his talent as an ensemblier was expressed as much in the decoration of ocean liners—Cuba (1923), Lafayette (1928), Paris (1929)— as in the fitting-out of the sleeper cars of the Orient Express; the Palace of Nations in Geneva, where he worked alongside José-Maria Sert, with whom he also collaborated at the Waldorf Astoria in New York; and the furnishing of the Mitsubishi department stores in Tokyo. His style, defined by the curve of his metal leg blended with a joyous ornamentation, rejuvenated and lightened the full and massive forms of art deco while preserving harmony, comfort and a certain idea of simple luxury. Director of the École de l’Union centrale des arts décoratifs, in Paris, in 1946, his influence marked many postwar talents, including Jean Royère. ACC DISTRIBUTION AUTUMN 2017

tuart Devlin was probably the most original and creative goldsmith and silversmith of his time, and one of the greats of all time. His originality of design marked him out as a master craftsman and his prolific output was a tribute to the width of his imagination.’— Foreword by His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, June 2016. This book gives an idea of Stuart Devlin’s extraordinary creativity, his skill, and the beauty of his work. It comprises over 500 pages with hundreds of images of Devlin’s gold, silver and coins as well as his jewellery, sculpture and furniture. Many collectors will recognise pieces that they originally commissioned or have bought. Also shown are numerous sketches and working drawings. The short sections of text include concise

captions and reviews from primary sources. Although it has been impossible to encompass everything ever designed or produced by Devlin, the book highlights how remarkable it is that this wealth of ideas was conceived by just one man. Stuart Devlin was a pioneer goldsmith who rejected the anonymity of corporate design during the 1960s. He adapted old techniques and devised many new ones. His commissions include those for the Royal Households, cathedrals, the armed forces, sport and universities, as well as abundant private commissions. He is also a coin and medal designer. Australian born, recognition came to Devlin after designing the Australian decimal coinage in 1963. He has since designed coins for more than 30 countries.

his book features the collector/author’s well-informed views about a careful selection of mainly 19th century knotted pile carpets and flat woven covers in various techniques from his own extensive collection, which has been built up over a period of more than four decades. Many of the rugs, which are all of the highest graphic and artistic quality, have been acquired without recourse to the open market and are therefore previously unseen and unpublished. Raoul (Mike) Tschebull’s long experience in the genre allows insights that go beyond the conventional wisdom of the traditional antique oriental carpet bazaar. His collecting career began under the aegis of one of the great US collectors of a previous generation, Joseph V. McMullan.

This beautifully illustrated book will include a general introduction to the Caucasus/Azerbaijan area setting the context for the focused presentation of some 70 examples, each with the author’s comments about design, structure, technique, attribution and dating. It accompanies possible lectures at museum conventions, and Carpet & Textile Society meetings in the USA.

here are we going to eat tonight? What’s the best place for a drink? Where do locals buy their fruit and vegetables? Where are the best delicatessens? All tourists who love good food have asked themselves these questions when visiting a city or country. Many travel guides suggest some food addresses but these are generally very few, unoriginal and, most of the time, crowded with other tourists. This new series, on the other hand, promises the opposite: each title will bring you the heart of gastronomy of the selected destination. Starred restaurants, bistros, canteens, street food, Asian cuisine, chic picnics: in Eat London the best of London is lying on a silver platter just for you! reen with envy; red-faced with embarrassment; in a blue mood; or in the pink: colour ‘speaks’ well before words. And Pantone is the renowned authority on colour and colour communication, known to artists, designers, art directors, businesses and students around the world. Central to their understanding of colour are the subtle cues that affect how we relate to our environment and each other. Now, in collaboration with Italy’s premiere cookbook publisher, Pantone brings its expertise on the relationship between colour and mood to the subject of food. Fifty-six step-by-step recipes are gathered around eight colours and their variations, including: Yellow (Tarte Citron); Magenta (Sea Bream Tartar with Rose Petals); Green (Savory Asparagus Tart); Blue (Salad with Borage Flowers); Purple (Fox Grape Pudding); Orange (Tandoori Chicken with Basmati Rice); Red (Round Meringue with Wild Strawberries); and Brown (Coffee Semifreddo). Each recipe collection is introduced with an essay by a Pantone colour expert on that colour’s mood-food connection. And each recipe is styled to perfection and photographed in Pantone’s full-colour glory. Added features include 40 suggested menus combining colours for occasions (brunch, a children’s party, happy hour, a dessert buffet); cuisines (Italian, Mediterranean, Japanese, French); meals for every season; and many other themes. Also included is an extensive guide to necessary equipment, utensils and

rom Ancient Greece onwards, humans have been swept up in a race to replicate and rebuild themselves. Robots have infiltrated our social consciousness. They are everywhere, from Leonardo da Vinci’s drummer robot to the futurist manmachine; from Frankenstein to the works of Isaac Asimov and Philip Dick; from Edward Gordon Craig’s theory of the actor as a super-puppet to Daft Punk and Kraftwerk. It doesn’t end there, either. Robots feature heavily in cinema (Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, and George Lucas’s Star Wars saga, to name a few). They star in innumerable comic strips and cartoons (from Astro Boy to Marvel comics and Japanese manga). Fields like design, architecture and fashion, where creativity encounters industry, turned the robot into a commodity rather than a character. Tracking the conceptual development of the robot through Western cultural history, it uncovers the roots of our fascination with artificial humanity.

thought-provoking exploration of the world’s enduring legal and moral dilemmas

hat is a crime against humanity and when should it be investigated? What does ‘human rights’ mean? Is law the new religion and are its high priests, the lawyers, really all bad? What is the role of the law in the regulation of sexual behaviour? Are there limits to what we can reasonably expect from international war crimes tribunals? These and many other crucial questions are explored with wit, panache and consummate even-handedness by Sir Geoffrey Nice, QC, in the series of lectures he delivered as Gresham Professor of Law from 2012 to 2016. Drawing on events from every continent and every period in history, from ancient Babylon to Britain on the brink of Brexit; and referencing icons from Cicero to Socrates, Bertrand Russell to Jean-Paul Sartre, and Joan Baez to Muhammad Ali, Sir Geoffrey applies his own wealth of experience to moral problems which are as pressing in today’s anxious world as they ever have been.
