Imagine Buildings Floating like Clouds Thoughts and Visions of Contemporary Architecture from 101 Key Creatives

Vladimir Belogolovsky

“Ground Should Be Given to People and Gardens, Not Buildings” - Will

Alsop

In this invaluable and thought-provoking book, Vladimir Belogolovsky reflects on nearly 20 years of conversations with leading creatives from around the world whose focus is on art, photography, architecture, design, critical theory, and more. His intimate dialogues are with prolific visionaries, the likes of Paul Andreu, Aaron Betsky, Tatiana Bilbao, Christo, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Glenn Murcutt, Renzo Piano, Moshe Safdie, Ric Scofido, Richard Serra, Frank Stella, Michael Sorkin, Stanley Tigerman, Bernard Tschumi, Lin Utzon, Massimo Vignelli, Madelon Vriesendorp, and so many others. He exposes the complexity of their thought processes, while comparing and contrasting them to one another to distil more than 101 ideas. His engaging narrative captures the stories behind every project and every personality while exploring many important questions, including what makes a building architecture? How would a Futurist solve problems vs those whose focus is on nostalgia?

Imagine Buildings Floating Like Clouds represents a diverse group of multitalented, creative people who work in disparate places culturally and climatically and came of age in very different times — from the revolutionary 1960s to our own time, when the future, for many, is being more feared than desired.

Hidden Architecture Buildings that Blend In

Alyn Griffiths

This book presents innovative examples of hidden architecture: buildings that are designed to disappear into their surroundings or hide in plain sight. In the city, hidden buildings are often designed to provide the occupants with privacy and protection from the busy world outside or they can be incorporated into the streetscape to free up space for public use. In the countryside, buildings should not spoil a scenic landscape, so they can be designed to become a part of it. Buildings can be buried underground, hidden amongst trees, covered with greenery or even sunk into the sea. They can be clad in mirrors to reflect their surroundings, disappear beneath an urban plaza or be hidden from view on top of another building. Each of these imaginative solutions offers a way for architecture to blend in rather than stand out. Hidden Architecture tells the stories of projects from around the world that are cleverly disguised but still beautifully detailed and outstanding in their execution.

The Making of a Mosque Djamaa al-Djazair – The Grand Mosque of Algiers by KSP Engel

Edited by Jürgen Engel and Christian Welzbacher

Symbol of Islam, monument of superlatives, and the heart of an entirely new metropolitan district: the Djamaa al-Djazair is an edifice with many different facets. In 2008, KSP Engel’s design won the international competition for Algiers’ new Grand Mosque, which was completed in 2019 after more than a decade of planning and construction work. The vast structure runs along the Bay of Algiers’ shoreline well over 600 yards. A giant 148 feet-high dome covers the main prayer hall, the 870 feet-high minaret constitutes Africa’s tallest building to date. This book tells the full story of how Algiers’ Djamaa al-Djazair, the world’s third-largest mosque after those of Mecca and Medina, was created and constructed and documents this singular structure in rich detail and lavishly illustrated.

The author leads readers to encounter a new paradigm by showing the luxury of simplicity and the beauty of small things.

Haute Couture Architecture respects artisans, hand-made goods, self-sufficiency, and caring for nature. Being close to nature is a lifestyle of forward-thinking outside the box and is a natural means to discovering ourselves.

G. E. Kidder Smith Builds The Travel of Architectural Photography

Angelo Maggi, Richard Weller, Michelangelo Sabatino, Samuel Pujol Smith

George Everard Kidder Smith (1913–1997) was a multidimensional figure within the wide-ranging field of North American architectural professionals in the second half of the 20th century. Although he trained as an architect, he chose not to practice within the conventional strictures of an architecture office. Instead, Kidder Smith “designed,” researched, wrote, and photographed a remarkably diverse collection of books about architecture and the built environment. His work and life were deeply interwoven and punctuated by travel related to the research, writing, and promotion of books that sought to reveal the genius loci of the countries whose built environments he admired and wished to share with a broader audience.

Truth and Lies in Architecture

Richard Francis-Jones, Kenneth Frampton

This is a collection of provocative essays that journey into the vexed circumstance of contemporary architectural practice. The nature of the great cultural, social, political, environmental, and consumerist challenges facing the contemporary architect are explored, interpreted, and questioned, while drawing connections from architecture theory, philosophy, science, literature, and film sources in an attempt to negotiate the territory between the truth and lies in architecture. These essays written by a leading Australian architect represent a level of comprehensive critical awareness rarely found within the architectural profession and one would be hard pressed to find another comparable figure in contemporary architectural practice. The entire argumentation is impressive, challenging, intellectually at the highest level and beautifully written.

Paper Architecture in Novosibirsk

Edited by Georg Schöllhammer, Ruben Arevshatyan, and Anton Karamanov

Cosmic cow sheds, insectoids, Egyptian pyramids, steam locomotive hybrids, and deconstructivist housing projects: during the 1980s, student “paper architects” of the Siberian Civil Engineering Institute in Novosibirsk created fantastical utopian design. Contrary to the commonly held belief that these architectural designs made of paper and created during the late years of a crumbling Soviet Union were never intended to be translated into buildings, the Novosibirsk group actually devoted themselves to a practical application of their ideas. For the first time ever, this book offers a deep insight into Novosibirsk’s Paper Architecture movement and its output. Lavishly illustrated with previously unpublished material from formerly inaccessible archives, the volume provides a comprehensive survey of this fascinating form of late Soviet-era speculative architecture from the Siberian metropolis, that is still far too little known in the Western world.
