Edited by Architects Regional Council Asia
Architecture Asia, as the official journal of the Architects Regional Council Asia, aims to provide a forum, not only for presenting Asian phenomena and their characteristics to the world, but also for understanding diversity and multiculturalism within Asia from a global perspective. This issue focuses on how cultural identity and social responsibility can be embodied within architecture and space design, and features three essays and 11 projects that elaborate on this topic. Each essay discusses the social situation in Australia, Malaysia, and India, respectively, as the eleven projects, accompanied with full-color photos and text descriptions, highlight architectural works that include a community center, nursery, hostel block, and cultural museum, among others, to reveal how through these buildings cultural identity is strengthened, or social responsibility is extended.
Architecture Asia: Globalization and Locality
Edited by Architects Regional Council Asia
This issue of Architecture Asia discusses the topic of globalization and locality through four essays and eleven projects. The essays attempt to observe the tension between the different forces of globalization, which is being widely debated as a distinguishing trend, and also highlight globalization’s impact on local architecture, as well as the various efforts being taken to ensure local identity and distinctive locality in architecture design. The projects, accompanied with full-color photos and text descriptions, demonstrate the many successful attempts in developing design concepts and methods to cope with the globalization trend while maintaining locality. These essays and projects are carefully selected to represent diversity in project locations, and includes locations such as Thailand, India, Japan, and China.

London Burlesque A Family Album
Angus Stewart
Angus Stewart has spent ten years backstage with London’s burlesque community, getting to know the performers and documenting their shared world to create what he calls ‘a family album’. From the beginning, his focus was on the personalities, rather than the performances. He deliberately eschews the ‘big reveal’. Instead, his photographs capture the friendships, the laughter and the camaraderie that characterize the burlesque scene. We are introduced to a thriving community that values dedication and loyalty, and where the exotic is always laced with humor; and we hear from performers Rara Avis, Belle de Beauvoir, Cerise Rei, Lady Cheek, Lady May, Lynn Ruth Miller and Vixen Victoire. Burlesque can be provocative, it can be political, and it can be serious. But it can also be a lot of fun.
Women Jewellery Designers
Juliet Weir-De Rouchefoucauld
This sumptuous book showcases the work of women jewelers in the 20th century. Beginning with Arts & Crafts jewelers in Britain, Europe and North America, the author then examines the key figures and movements of the pre-war period including Coco Chanel’s legendary Bijoux de Diamants exhibition of 1932, the designs of Suzanne Belperron and the roles of Jeanne Toussaint at Cartier and Renée Puissant at Van Cleef & Arpels. From the 1950s to the present day, a wide range of international designers are examined in detail with many examples of their work clearly illustrated. The author focuses on themes associated with jewelry, including color, light, proportion, nature and legends.
Speculations
Peter Cook, Contributions by Frank Gehry, Toyo Ito, Thom Mayne, Peter Wilson
Peter Cook’s distinctive drawings have captivated and inspired generations of designers. Freed from stylistic or functional conventions, his graphic speculations have redefined the language of architectural communication. Speculations spans Cook’s entire career, presenting some 160 drawings that range from student projects in the 1950s, through Archigram, to new work completed shortly before going to press. Arranged chronologically, these drawings chart the course of what can now be seen as an enthralling architectural adventure. Cook’s own observations about the nature of architecture and urbanism, and the concept of the buildable, are complemented by pieces from architects Frank Gehry, Toyo Ito, Thom Mayne and Peter Wilson.

Eiland
Jeroen Hofman
Photographer Jeroen Hofman worked for years in all weathers on this magnum opus, capturing the Dutch islands in monumental images like a contemporary painter. All the photos were taken from an aerial platform, which enabled him to capture the landscape and the horizon in a very special way. An island has a mythical appeal to man and the imagination. This book celebrates and depicts the longing for an island as a place of rest, nature and seclusion. With text contributions by journalist and writer Arnold van Bruggen, who lives on Texel and made the iconic book The Sochi Project together with Rob Hornstra, and by Willemijn van der Zwaan, curator at Fotomuseum Den Haag.
Max Pinckers
Hans Theys
This trilingual book marks the culmination of 10 years of collaboration between the photographer Max Pinckers and the writer Hans Theys, who was given permission to use a personal selection from all of Pinckers’ photographs to create a classic photobook without having to take into account their original context. The publication also contains an essay in which Theys discusses Pinckers’ oeuvre based on thoughts by Susan Sontag. The book is published to accompany a solo exhibition in the Photo Museum of Antwerp from November 2021 until March 2022.

ImFlusse Emma Vitti
This beautifully illustrated monograph on Italian artist and photographer Emma Vitti features paintings, drawings, and photographs which express the flow of being with waves of images that follow one another naturally, like the crest of a river. This body of work, created over the course of her career, is simultaneously fleeting and perpetual, fragile and yet unbreakable in both structure and content. It is meant to be seen as an evolving whole, recalling the unique symmetry of the inside of a snail shell or the core of an artichoke. Alike in form, yet unique.
Casper Faassen
Casper Faassen
Beauty is central to the artworks of Dutch visual artist Casper Faassen. He has developed a unique visual language through the combination of photography, paint, and the application of craquelure to his canvases. He builds them up from multiple transparent layers, creating a distance between subject and viewer, highlighting the contrast between beauty and apparent decay. This first overview of his photographic work includes his Asia series, dancers from the Dutch National Ballet series, cityscapes, and still lifes in the style of Morandi.
STAL Vernacular Animal Sheds
Servaas Van Belle, Introduction by Stephan Vanfleteren
For this unique book, photographer Servaas Van Belle scouted every corner of Belgium to find just the right kind of shed, always photographing them in the same perfect lighting conditions. And for Van Belle ‘perfect’ means in a haze of fog. Livestock shelters in meadows and fields are so common in the Belgian landscape and culture that nobody ever pays them any attention. Nonetheless, the countryside offers quite a range of architectural gems. They come in many shapes and sizes, are constructed from motley materials (often recycled) and exhibit a varied color palette. Clearly showing the ravages of time, they tell wordless stories that Servaas Van Belle can capture like no other.

In God’s Mirror The Theyyams of Malabar
Pepita Seth
Theyyam is an extraordinary 2,000-yearold ritual of worship found only in the northern region of India’s south-western state of Kerala. It is in this myth-wrapped land that empowered men become temporarily transformed into deities. Whilst the process is an internal one that obliterates the practitioner’s human persona, on an external level his face is transformed by intricate make-up and his body fantastically costumed. Pepita Seth’s decades-long association with Theyyam’s practitioners gave her unprecedented access to their unique culture. In God’s Mirror: The Theyyams of Malabar is the culmination, in her words and photographs, of her commitment to this extraordinary subject.
Personal
Vincent Peters
For more than 20 years, Vincent Peters has been playing in the first league of international photography. In 2014, he published his first volume The Light Between Us, which collected his best shots of actors, models and musicians. In Personal, he turned to his favorite subject: women. Once again, we encounter stars as we have never seen them before; Penélope Cruz, Linda Evangelista and Irina Shayk are just a few of the prominent names. Vincent Peters has made a personal selection of mostly unpublished photographs for this volume. In addition to portraits, there are also nudes in which his art of creating sensual photographs with skilful lighting comes into its own. In this way, he creates mysterious images that celebrate female beauty and inevitably draw us under their spell.
Ritratto rosso Elisabetta Catalano captures Federico Fellini
Laura Cherubini, Raffaele Simongini
Federico Fellini (1920-1993) spent much of his working life at the famed Cinecittà movie studio outside of Rome. This intimate series of images of the renowned Italian film director are part of an exhibition there celebrating the centenary of his birth. Italian photographer Elisabetta Catalano, famous for her portraits of artists and directors, photographed him on set over the course of nearly 3 decades, and many of these pictures are previously unpublished. These wonderfully moving and extraordinary photographs are accompanied by texts written by film historians, critics, and curators.

Analog Total Photography Today
Grassi Museum für angewandte Kunst
Analog photography is enjoying a revival. Whereas digital photography is predominantly used for documentary and everyday purposes, its analog counterpart is becoming increasingly popular as an artistic and experimental medium. This catalog showcases the wide variety of contemporary trends in analog photography as exemplified by individual and serial works, as well as photographic installations. Produced by 24 artists from German-speaking countries, the works are grouped into four thematic sections that illustrate different facets of this art form, all with a distinct focus on the material and experimental uses of light, chemical ingredients, and technique.
further 03 Fotobus Society
Edited by Raquel Gandra, Florian Genz, Aurélien Guillery, Alice Lemesre, Magnus Terhorst
Fotobus Society is a network of photographers founded by Christoph Bangert. Its more than 800 members are studying at universities and photography schools across Germany and Europe and benefit from the association’s broad cultural and social programs. At the heart of this community is a 30-year-old bus that acts as a mobile photography school and regularly takes members to photography festivals, symposia, and professional events. This book is the third volume in a series that introduces selected works of the association’s members and offers a fascinating glimpse into the contemporary scene of young European photography. Telling stories about everyday life and the boundless excesses of our time, it features pictures that are marked by violence: directed against oneself, against others, and against the planet.
Günter Valda Don’t Let Me Down
Günter Valda
For nearly two years, hospital staff and nurses have been working at the limit of their capacity on hermetically sealed COVID wards. Struggling with worsening physical and mental health, they have endured ordeals that are hard for outsiders to appreciate. With his new project, the photographer Günter Valda – himself working as a hospital nurse – aims to give frontline healthcare workers a voice and put a face to their experience. He asked hospital staff to send him selfportraits from work and to jot down their thoughts and feelings. The result is a collection of snapshots showing faces that are marked by the dramatic scenes that unfold before them every day, with furrows, dents, and red lines caused by tightly fitting masks and protective gear.

Integrated Pest Management for Collections
Suzanne Ryder, Amy Crossman
This collection of papers and posters presented at the ICON conference ‘A Pest Odyssey – The Next Generation’ is evidence that integrated pest management (IPM) has been adopted globally as the accepted strategy within the cultural heritage sector to mitigate the risk posed to our unique collections by damaging pests. In 2021, after an unprecedented period of change in our work practices in response to restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, a greater emphasis was placed on collaboration, remote monitoring and, of course, silverfish.
Wamulu
Text by Georges Petitjean, Interviewer Bérengère Primat, Interviewee Arnaud Serval
This second book in the Aboriginal Arts and Knowledge series documents a body of work created cooperatively by 4 artists: Ted Egan Tjangala, Dinny Nolan Tjampitjinpa, Johnny Possum Tjapaltjarri and Albie Morris Tjampitjinpa. Wamulu, a yellow flower, has traditionally been used during ritual ceremonies in the western desert of Australia. The wamulu flower is gathered, dried, cut up, and mixed with ochre and binders before being applied to the ground. This catalog for an exhibition at the Fondation Opale showcases an exceptional project that took place near Alice Springs between 2002 and 2005, where this collective of artists used paint made from the wamulu flower, which is most often associated with impermanence, to create contemporary and permanent works of art.
Maria Lai Mending Pain Weaving Hope
Micol Forti
Maria Lai (1919-2003), the influential Sardinian artist whose work draws on the rich history and traditions of her native land, created multimedia works that explore community, religion, and folklore. This book, the catalog for a show in Sardinia, presents nearly 70 works, most previously unseen, related to the extraordinary Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) series that Maria Lai created in 1981 and which she donated to the parish of Ulassai, her birthplace. Maria Lai’s artistic endeavor is strongly defined by a mix of secular and religious spirituality: the work presented in this volume reveal her idea of “making art” as something that must respond to the essential questions of mankind and the meaning of existence.

This volume focuses on recent developments in the investigation of the role of microbes associated with historic materials. Contributions from world-renowned scientists describe the latest advancements in the role of microorganisms in the degradation, treatment and protection of cultural heritage materials and objects including ceramic tiles, stained glass, stone and wooden buildings, paintings and library materials. These developments range from the use of third-generation sequencing to detect organisms that are present in the microbiome of colonized parchment, to the ecological approaches being used to investigate microbial colonization of archaeological sites, to the use of bacteria to clean wall paintings. To conclude each section, we have included a synopsis of current research illustrating recent developments.

Greener Solvents in Conservation An Introductory Guide
Edited by Gwendoline R Fife
This handbook, published in association with Sustainability in Conservation focuses on organic solvents, their impact on human health and the environment and how they might potentially affect the materials of the artefacts which are worked on by conservators. The aim is to assist in the eradication of the widespread use of the most harmful solvents by providing information to enable their identification and the most straightforward ways of determining alternatives that may be used in their place.
Contemporary Issues in Book and Paper Conservation
Pamela Murray, Leah Humenuck, William Bennett, Lauren Moon-Schott
The papers in this volume were presented at the Icon Book & Paper Group Third Triennial Conference 2021 entitled Mod Cons: Modern Conservation. Modern Conveniences. Modern Constraints. Topics include: decolonization; new treatments; educational programs; business models; sustainability initiatives and frameworks. The scope of the work provides potential lessons and inspiration, and offers the opportunity for reflection on different approaches.
ROT Therese Hilbert RED Schmuck 1966–2020 Jewelry
Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum
This exhibition catalog documents the first solo show by Swiss jewelry artist Therese Hilbert. It features 250 works, going back 50 years and beginning with her earliest, unknown pieces through to her newest work created in 2020. One of her life-long passions is volcanoes: she has climbed many of them and has used them as a theme in her jewellery design for many years. The sense of heat below the surface of her minimalist designs underlines her passion for the subject. Her work is in the collections of the Design Museum (Munich), the National Gallery of Victoria, the Dallas Museum of Art, and Museum of Arts and Design (New York). Features texts by Heike Endter, Otto Künzli, Ellen MaurerZilioli, Pravu Mazumdar, Angelika Nollert, Warwick Freeman and Petra Hölscher.
Madeleine Frey
Rituals shape our social relations and are highly significant in all cultures. They define communities and make transformation possible by conveying security and support. In this exhibition catalog, three up and coming artists - Baptiste Brossard, Helen Dowling, and Sara-Lena Maierhofer - explore rituals in their various contemporary forms. Based on predominantly time-based media such as photography and video, their works exemplify the ephemeral and performative character of ritual acts. This book accompanies an exhibition of the same name at Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen (Germany), and imparts a critical perspective on this elementary social force. It illustrates that rituals are necessarily subject to change yet can also strengthen personal and societal resilience in the present day.
Martin Bruno Schmid Almost Nothing – Fast Nichts
Edited by Gallery Schwarz Greifswald
German artist Martin Bruno Schmid (b. 1970) works at the intersection of art and architecture; his tools are drills, saws, and sandpaper, his process includes hammering, shredding, and cutting. Material is extracted, and rarely applied. Schmid addresses the very subject of construction itself with his minimalistic and exceptionally radical interventions in public spaces. In doing so he pushes the frontiers of what is feasible and makes visible what we take for granted. Kunsthandwerk ist Kaktus
Sabine Runde, Matthias Wagner K
What does craftsmanship mean today? This exhibition catalog of nearly 600 pages explores the meaning of craftsmanship in the context of the outstanding collection of the Museum Angewandte Kunst (Frankfurt, Germany) in a monumental survey of 700 items dating from 1945 to the present. Scale reproductions of plates, furniture, cutlery, jewelry and vases highlight their surprising variety of form. In their essays, the ten authors take diverse approaches to the broad terrain of craftsmanship: from the relationship between East Asia and Western ceramics, via the handicrafts of the Romantic period, to the adventure that is arts and crafts today.
TSATSAS past present future
Dimitrios Tsatsas, Edited by Inez Florschütz, Deutsches Ledermuseum
In the publication TSATSAS. past, present, future, Esther and Dimitrios Tsatsas present an exciting and informative glimpse into their artistic oeuvre to mark the 10th anniversary of their business. The designer couple have been developing high-end handcrafted leather bags and accessories since 2012, eschewing established parameters of design and interweaving and developing the traditional Offenbach am Main (Germany) bag-makers’ craft with their own cutting-edge design vernacular. The publication illustrates the varied work processes that go into creating their accessories, from the concept and the transformation of this traditional craft to their sources of inspiration in art, design, and architecture.
Fabienne Verdier The Song of Stars
Text by B. Baucher, J. Frémon, F. Goerig-Hergott, F. Steininger, Trinh Xuan
This volume documents the show The Song of the Stars, a solo exhibition of paintings by French artist Fabienne Verdier (b.1962) at the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar. Her work is presented alongside ancient and modern art in the museum’s permanent collection, creating a kind of dialog between the two. The central body of work reproduced here, Rainbows, was inspired by the range of color and the aura of light in the Issenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald, one of the highlights of the museum’s holdings. The connection between man and cosmos, and the vital energy of the universe, is the theme at the heart of this work.

The Classical Antiquities Fondation Gandur pour l’Art
Edited by Isabelle Tassignon, Foreword by Henri Lavagne
This stunning 2-volume set introduces the Geneva-based Fondation Gandur’s collection of classical antiquities gathered over the past 40 years by founder Jean Claude Gandur. These two volumes are complementary: The first volume investigates the subject of ancient religion by observing images of idols, goddesses, gods, and devotees, and through them related rituals and religious practices; while the second focuses on especially exquisite objects, luxurious trifles known since ancient times as deliciæ. These two volumes interact with each other, forming a whole that offers a sparkling view of Greek-Roman antiquity, from Italy to the Roman Orient of the Later Empire, through archaic Cyprus, classical Greece, and Hellenistic Egypt.
Passage de témoins pour Luciano Fabro
Vivianne van Singer
This book, designed and edited by the Italian-Swiss artist Vivianne van Singer, is an ode to Italian sculptor Luciano Fabro (1936-2007), a well-known Informalist artist and one of the founders of the Arte Povera movement. Having been long acquainted with his work and then having met the artist in person, Van Singer reflects upon his untimely death and pays homage to his career in a collection of texts, images, and works. The starting point of the project is a letter Van Singer sent artists, critics, and prominent figures of the art world in which she invited them to submit a work of art or a text exemplifying what Luciano Fabro had represented for them.
Frédéric Bruly Bouabré Un monde sans limites
Edited by 5 Continents Editions
Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (Ivory Coast, 1923-2014) was a self-taught artist and one of the most relevant international voices of the second half of the 20th century. In 1948 he experienced a “revelation”: from that moment on, he called himself “Cheik Nadro” (he who does not forget) and he not only undertook philosophical research into African reality and the meaning of life, but he also began creating a monumental work of art entitled Connaissance du monde. With pen and colored pencils on sheets of construction paper, he gave life to a sort of visual encyclopedia that grew richer by the day.

The Cormorant Fishing Boat A Japanese Craftsman’s Methods
Douglas Brooks
To document and preserve an ancient craft tradition in danger of disappearing, Douglas Brooks apprenticed with five master boatbuilders in Japan between 1996 and 2010, building a different traditional wooden boat with each. His research and experiences were presented in his landmark 2015 publication, Japanese Wooden Boatbuilding. This book documents his most recent apprenticeship, building a cormorant fishing boat with 85-year-old master craftsman Seichi Nasu, in Gifu, Japan. Using trained cormorants to fish has a 1,300-year history in Gifu, and is done at night from special river craft called ubune, literally “cormorant boat.” Together with Mr. Nasu, then 85, Brooks worked with several volunteers over a two-month period to build the 42-foot craft, a design largely unchanged for centuries.
On Fire Bruno Corà
On Fire is the title of an exhibition curated by Bruno Corà, organized by the Giorgio Cini Foundation in collaboration with Tornabuoni Art, from April to July 2022, dedicated to the most evocative of nature’s primary elements: fire. From Burri’s combustions to Klein’s, Arman’s and Kounellis’s use of gas flame, as well as Calzolari’s and Parmiggiani’s use of flames and smoke in different ways, the artists have explored both the destructive and generative effects of fire, using different materials, as well as ash and light, creating an innovative form of expression. The exhibition includes works on international loan from the most prestigious public and private collections in Europe and North America, offering thus the opportunity to see some masterpieces that have never or rarely been seen before.
Lucian Freud Portraits
Edited by Sarah Howgate
This study of Freud’s portraits, first published in English in 2012, surveys seven decades of activity, from the early 1940s to the artist’s death in 2011 and features 130 paintings, drawings, and engravings from public and private collections. A series of previously unpublished interviews with Michael Auping held between May 2009 and January 2011 reveal Freud’s opinions on the complex relationship the artist builds with his model, on the difficulty of painting nudes and self-portraits, and on the painters he admired most. He was personally reserved, but established a very close relationship with his sitters behind the closed doors of his studio. The many subjects Freud portrayed include members of his family, especially his mother Lucy, and other artists, such as Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, and David Hockney.

Inner Travels Rinus Van de Velde
In his internationally acclaimed work, Rinus Van de Velde (b. 1983) creates a parallel universe in which elements of reality and the imagination are fused into a unique form of visual storytelling. He takes us on a journey through his imagination, a place that transcends time and space, where all encounters are possible, and every path can be walked. This book presents a circular narrative of departure and return, using the metaphor of a train, and offers an overview of Van de Velde’s most recent works. It enters into a dialog with the work of modern and contemporary artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Joseph Cornell, Fischli/Weiss, Joan Mitchell, Claude Monet, Monster Chetwynd, Laure Prouvost, Josephine Troller and Jean Tinguely.
Strandbeesten The New Generation
Theo Jansen
Dutch artist Theo Jansen (b. 1948, The Hague) has achieved worldwide recognition for his imposing and ingenious strandbeests, which are much more than art objects. They actually try to create dunes themselves. Taking his inspiration from the theory of evolution, Jansen has taught his strandbeests to float on the sea breeze and to walk independently along the beach. Using PVC tubing, adhesive tape and PET bottles, he has brought a completely new life form into existence. In so doing, he seeks insight into the origins of life itself. His ultimate aim is to have herds of his creations roam the beach all on their own. ‘Give me another couple of million years, and my strandbeests will live completely independently.’
Gideon Kiefer – 3007 A.D.—4897 A.D.
Gideon Kiefer
The gifted artist Gideon Kiefer makes his debut with painterly work in this book. Kiefer’s inspiration comes from his grandfather’s art books that he read as a child, with prints of work by masters such as Rubens, Caravaggio and Repin. He selects and reinterprets details that intrigue him. Small additions, such as handwritten text or small anecdotes, betray a piece of the personal content hidden in each work, just as they expose the artists’ growing concerns about the current climate crisis.

Antoine De Moor, Cäcilia Fluck, Petra Linscheid
Its dry climate means that Egypt boasts an exceptionally rich heritage of preserved ancient textiles. Since 1996, the international research group Textiles from the Nile Valley has been studying these Roman, Byzantine and early-Islamic textile artefacts, many of which have found their way into European and North American museum collections. The research group, consisting of curators, archaeologists, textile conservators and scientists, organizes a biennial conference at Katoen Natie HeadquARTers in Antwerp, and publishes a series of unique books on the importance of Egyptian textiles. This latest volume brings together the findings from the 11th conference, which was held from 25 to 27 October 2019. The focus is on the history of textile excavating and collecting, which goes back to the late 19th century.

Sven Van Dorst
Flowers in a Vase with a Clump of Cyclamen and Precious Stones is a masterpiece by one of the most important painters from the late 16th and early 17th centuries: Jan Brueghel I (1568-1625). Although people would also call him ‘Flower Brueghel’, he only began painting vases of flowers in his late thirties. Flowers in a Vase with a Clump of Cyclamen and Precious Stones is one of the earliest and finest examples, a stunning masterpiece through which this Phoebus Focus zooms in on the sources of inspiration, motivation and method of the master who concentrated on all this floral beauty with such dedication and precision.

The book includes many magnificent images of the Kedara Kalpa series of paintings, sourced from leading museums and collections around the world.

Fan Bo Opere / Artworks 2015-2020
Ada Lombardi, Laura Cherubuni
This book is a collection of the most recent works of Fan Bo, an artist who stands apart from the clichés used by contemporary Chinese artists. That period of time was of particular importance for the artist who, as the scholar Filippo Salviati stated, suddenly altered his artistic journey during those years. However, the artist’s poetics and intentions appear to be endowed with an internal coherence and this book illustrates them by carefully explaining the details through the essays of five scholars and experts of contemporary Western and Eastern art: Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, Filippo Salviati and Yvonne Spielmann, to whom we are very grateful, as well as the undersigned curators of the work.

Girodet. “Imitations d’Anacréon”
Marie-Pierre Salé
The charming painter of Endymion’s Sleep, Atala’s Funeral and Chateaubriand’s Portrait was also a poet. Thanks to his classical education, Girodet (1767-1824) was the author of free translations of ancient Greek and Latin poets. In 1808 he tried the to imitate and at the same time illustrate the Odes of Anacreon, whose edition was published posthumously. The Musée du Louvre holds the precious manuscript of this intense and complex work, in which the poetic research and graphic invention intertwine with the text. This book reconstructs the history of the manuscript, the various stages of the project and the posthumous versions, and analyzes the artist’s aesthetic sources.

Le carnet Meuricoffre: portraits d’Antoine Jean Gros
Laura Angelucci
The identical reproduction of the Meuricoffre album, acquired by the Louvre in 2018, is a good opportunity to leaf through one of the only two portrait books attributed to the French painter Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835). The beautiful gallery of portraits, drawn in the intimacy of this family, restores the physiognomies of representatives of Franco-Swiss high society who were in contact with the Meuricoffre family at the time and, through them, with Gros. The study that accompanies the publication of the notebook reveals the hitherto unknown identity of these characters. A material description of the album, an essential scientific support for its understanding, completes the subject.

Daniel Lie Scales of Decay
Daniela Leykam, Christoph Tannert
A central pillar of Daniel Lie’s artistic practice is time – ranging from ageold memories to the beginning of the world, from the life span of a human being to the geological time of the elements. Lie’s art explores concepts such as life, death, and decay, as well as biographical relationships and heritage, with an approach that centers around personal memories, family stories, cultural objects, and natural products that survive for a long time and are linked to memories of the past. Taking a lifetime as a comparative measure, the works are inspired by developmental processes and the transition from one state to another. Installations, sculptures, and a combination of different media reveal the performative qualities of the referential objects – time, transience, and presence.
Lux Æterna
Ellen Marie Moysons, Koen Van Damme
Artist Ellen Marie harks back to the craft of the old masters. A technical style she perfected at the Barcelona Academy of Art. Lux Æterna, Latin for ‘Eternal Light’, is a series of 57 paintings in which we follow the process of a man on his way to self-realization. In the first act, we find him writhing in agony, tormented by a blindfold, which prevents him from seeing the light that surrounds him. In act two the blindfold has come off and gradually a dance unfolds. In the third act, blobs of paint splash from the canvas. The form falls apart and transmutes into an unrecognizable mass that contains merely the suggestion of a figure. The story visualizes the artist’s inner quest for Truth, Light and Freedom.

Technoshamanism HMKV Ausstellungsmagazin 2021/3
Inke Arns, Erik Davis, Verena Kuni
This catalog for a show at HMKV Dortmund explores techno-shamanism in the arts today, taking Joseph Beuys, who cultivated the figure of the shaman throughout his career, as the starting point. Contemporary artists are updating Beuys’s strategies and themes for the digital age, deploying many of the same tropes. These acquired iconic status in Beuys’s oeuvre, and were aimed at healing and transforming society, cultivating a spiritual approach to the environment, and subverting power structures and the logic of capitalism. Today’s artistic alchemists are engaged in a quest for “rare-earth elements” and metals, a fusion of the environment, technology, and artificial intelligence in order to create a technical/ mythological description of the cosmos.
Carol Pilars de Pilar Alltag / Everyday Life / Passage
Carol Pilars de Pilar
Düsseldorf-based sculptor Carol Pilars de Pilar (b. 1961) addresses fundamental questions of how we live in our world, and how we see ourselves and others. Her work exudes a humanistic sympathy for her subjects and their relationship to the world. This book, which documents her series entitled Alltag/Everyday Life and Passages, combines sculptures, texts, and images to create a multifaceted large-scale art installation. Mounted on concrete plinths and slender steel supports, the artist has created clay figurines that are representative of society in all its breadth and diversity. In interviews that address the key issues our society faces today, she spoke to six people, recording and transcribing their answers. In conjunction with the collages and sculptures, they contribute to the associative web of meanings her work evokes.

Evangelos Papadopoulos FLOW
Dennis Rudolph, Diane Edwards, Banz & Bowinkel, Lasse-Marc Riek, Edited by Wiebke Siever
Evangelos Papadopoulos (b.1974 in Athens) creates sculptures and temporary installations that often occupy entire rooms and consistently engage with the specifics of the exhibition space. Papadopoulos uses materials such as plasterboard and steel to make dynamic shapes. This book spotlights Flow, an installation specially created by Papadopoulos for his show at Museum Ratingen. The work’s title is a reference to the constantly changing sculptural interventions during the exhibition, which allowed Papadopoulos’s increasingly sprawling shapes to enter into a dialog with Dennis Rudolph, Diane Edwards, and Banz & Bowinkel. These digital artists responded to the sculptor’s three-dimensional structures by creating their own animated works using video clips, augmented reality apps, and 3-D scans, while the sound artist Lasse-Marc Riek composed a work-specific audiovisual intervention.
Limoges Enamel Triptychs Three Masterpieces from the Carrand Collection
Edited by Paola Venturelli, Ilaria Ciseri
The city of Limoges was famous for the production of champlevé enamels during the Middle Ages. During the Renaissance a revival of Limoges enamels took place, but the technique employed was that of painted enamel. The three works held at the Bargello National Museum in Florence are attributable to Nardon Pénicaud (1470–1542), and came from the famous collection of Louis Carrand, a Lyon antiquarian, who donated them to the Bargello in the 19th century. Their story is told in Ilaria Ciseri’s essay. Paola Venturelli analyzes the historical and artistic aspects of the works and places them in the context of contemporary enamel production. The final contributions from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure address the conservation of the three delicate enamels and analyzes materials and pigments.
The Riace Bronzes
Luigi Spina, Carmelo Malacrino
This publication was designed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Riace Bronzes. In it, Luigi Spina’s photographic research dialogs with the texts written by Carmelo Malacrino. The photographer here develops a continued narrative, offering a direct comparison between the two sculptures, identified as A and B, exploring interpretations of the physicality of the two subjects as well as the threedimensional quality of the bronze bodies, often concealed by the two-dimensional appearance of photographic images. Carmelo Malacrino analyzes these famous 5th century BC masterpieces from two points of view: as ancient works of art on the one hand, and considering their significance for contemporary culture on the other.
Leiko Ikemura Aquí estamos / Here we are
Leiko Ikemura
Renowned Japanese-Swiss artist Leiko Ikemura’s multifaceted oeuvre comprises paintings, watercolors, drawings, as well as terracotta and bronze sculptures. She has created a diverse cultural universe that acts as an intermediary between Western and Asian culture. Ikemura is known, above all, for her sculptural works. Her hybrid creatures, seemingly archaic, oscillate between human, animal and plant like shapes. This title introduces Ikemura’s most recent installation: six sculptures displayed in the open air at Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences, an ensemble of buildings and parkland designed by Santiago Calatrava. Large-format photographs bear witness to the unreal, almost dreamlike dialogue between the sculptures and Calavatra’s iconic architecture, while the inclusion of works unrelated to this project offers a comprehensive introduction to Ikemura’s unique visual universe.

The Proto-Industrial Architecture of the Veneto in the Age of Palladio
Edited by Deborah Howard
The remarkable career of the architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) is largely due to an extraordinary moment of prosperity in the Veneto mainland: a boom due in large measure to a little-studied revolution in manufacturing. This book brings to light for the first time the architecture of these early industries, especially the production of textiles (wool, silk), mining and metalworking, paper manufacture, ceramics, sawmilling and leather-tanning. The huge surge in patent applications to the Venetian Senate in the period highlights the parallel technological improvements in both efficiency and quality. Former proto-industrial buildings across the Veneto, studied at first-hand, reveal the efficiency of hydraulic power and smoothrunning mechanical processes. Water-power, a clean, renewable energy source, and structures made of natural, traditional materials, have much to teach today’s civilization.
TECHNOSCAPE The Architecture of Engineers
Maristella Casciato, Pippo Ciorra
Catalogue of the TECHNOSCAPE exhibition, which will be held at MAXXI in Autumn 2022, focusing on the relationship between artistic and scientific disciplines, and the consequent contacts between technique, creativity and social awareness. Architecture, engineering and science have overlapped on numerous occasions during the 20th century. TECHNOSCAPE explores this alliance, responding to MAXXI’s mission to look towards the future of our planet and the disciplines that modify its spaces. The volume follows the dual register of the exhibition, first dealing with how technology is making architecture, urban planning and other related disciplines more aware of their technical and scientific responsibility and capable of opening up new lines of research. The focus shifts then to structural engineering, comparing current masterpieces with previous historical modernist examples.

s a m architekten De Aedibus
Heinz Wirz
The present office in Zurich dates back to the founding of Dolf Schnebli in 1958. Through various constellations, the team has changed to its present form s a m architekten with Sacha Menz as the only one of the founding partners. Smaller buildings as well as large buildings of high quality are continuously being created. For example, the delicate Rustico Ronchetti in Brissago, which is subtly integrated into its surroundings, or the school extension in Vals, which radiate a poetic power, or the complex extension of the Swiss Re clubhouse at Mythenquai in Zurich, created in collaboration with artists.
Gus Wüstemann
Gus Wüstemann
A penchant for experimentation, transparency and sculptural presence are the salient features of the buildings of Gus Wüstemann, who has offices in Zurich and Barcelona. One striking building is the residential house on Langrütstrasse in Zurich. Elongated living spaces across the building are formed topographically, as it were, on their longitudinal walls, and the interiors radiate a raw sensuality.
Empathy as Function The School Buildings of Emil Jauch (19111962)
Heinz Wirz
Until now, Emil Jauch (1911–1962) has been a little-known protagonist of Swiss post-war architecture. Shaped by the Scandinavian Modernity of the 1930s, his buildings are characterized by a remarkable sensitivity. This book demonstrates the Lucerne architect’s empathetic design method by presenting his constructed school buildings. The publication describes the architect’s life and work in three chapters, recognizing his achievements in school building and classifying them within the European context of a humanizing functionalism.

Margit Jäschke Kairos
Contributions by Susanne Altmann, Karl Bollmann

Her work — collage, jewelry, drawings, and objects — celebrates inspiration, the origin of all creativity. She delights her audience with her very unique vision of the ‘poetry of things’. The title of her publication is symbolic of her oeuvre: Kairos is the Greek god of the fortuitous moment, who can only be caught fleetingly by his forelock. It is this precious moment that Margit Jäschke seizes, harnessing it to fuel her creativity. Discover this renowned artist’s multifaceted oeuvre, which blurs the boundaries between jewelry, painting, and sculpture.

A Mind of Their Own Jewellery from Austria. Focusing on Women Artists
Edited by Ursula Guttmann, Susanne Hammer, Gabriele Kutschera
With a focus on the women designers of early avant-garde jewelry, this publication paints a fascinating picture of Austrian jewelry production from the 1970s to the present day. The show brings together some 80 jewelry objects, many of which exemplify sculptural and conceptual approaches to jewelry design. Selected works from more recent generations not only highlights references to works of the pioneers but also attests to the developments of a contemporary, vibrant jewelry scene, whose diversity is yet to be discovered. The book’s title refers to the landmark exhibition Kunst mit Eigen-Sinn: Aktuelle Kunst von Frauen (Wilful Art: Contemporary Art by Women), which took place at the Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts in Vienna in 1985 and is regarded as a milestone in the artistic and social history of women.

LithoMania Design Lab #11
Edited by Claudia Banz, Ute Eitzenhöfer
Rare stones have fascinated people for thousands of years. Their extraction is never free of conflict, but at the same time the trading and processing of stones brings together people from the most remote regions of the world. In Germany, the town of Idar-Oberstein is considered a hub for gemstone trading and processing, and students come from all over the world to study and work here with rare materials. In LithoMania, part of the Design Lab exhibition series at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin, students from the Idar-Oberstein campus of the Trier University of Applied Sciences explore the complex ambivalence of gemstones, going beyond their use in jewelry design through objects, drawings, photographs, and texts.

Design Engineering Sustainable and Holistic
Marina-Elena Wachs
The book describes the potential of both design objects and concepts, as well as design as a process, with a strong focus on the process of design engineering in the past, present and future. The book makes a stance by referring to historic and current design parameters in industry in relation to certain training methods. It compares these within Europe, explicitly the approach taken by Germany, Great Britain, and Scandinavia – and highlights best practice examples. The range of design disciplines, especially an in-depth look at classic product and textile design, leads to new “blueprint” possibilities and interactive design methods.

Homo Digitalis How digitalisation is making us more human
Thierry Geerts
In Homo Digitalis, Thierry Geerts, CEO of Google Belgium and Luxembourg, looks at the dangers and opportunities of the digital revolution. Without taboos and with an eye to the future, he offers thoughtful examples of how digitalization affects us as people and as a society. His conclusion is clear: technology is neutral, and it’s up to people to use it consciously and confidently. If we do that, digitalization will make us happier, with more time for creativity, personal development, healthcare, and the things that really matter. Then we’ll become more human and we homo sapiens will turn into homo digitalis.

Scenography An Indian Perspective
Satyabrata Rout
Scenography is the art of ‘writing the stage space’ — a visual journey of unmaking and remaking the text on a theater space, a language of the spectatorial senses. However, this dialect of space and props, though prevalent in the West from the early days of the Greek plays, unfortunately has never been groomed and appropriated in the long theater tradition of the Orient — until a bunch of new practitioners and scholars decided to explore the field of design and change the narrative of space in recent times. Scenography: An Indian Perspective unearths this astonishing yet silent contribution of ‘stage’ design in Indian theaters throughout the ages and the comparatively recent appropriation of it.
Motherland Pushpamala N.’s Woman and Nation
Monica Juneja, Sumathi Ramaswamy
This interdisciplinary scholarly catalog examines Motherland, an important series of photo-performances by the acclaimed artist Pushpamala N. on the Indian nation personified as woman, mother, and goddess. The series shows Pushpamala taking on Mother India’s myriad personifications: nubile beauty and saintly renunciant; militant goddess wearing a garland of skulls or receiving the ultimate sacrifice of a warrior’s head; the mothersurgeon activating the birth of model citizens; and destitute widow, bent from years of abject labor. As she does so, she reveals that nations are invented, as are national embodiments. The artist’s burden is to reveal the ingredients of such inventions.

Theatre Royal Drury Lane A Star Reborn
Pamela Hartshorne, Foreword by Andrew Lloyd Webber
The world’s oldest theater site in continuous use, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane has been at the heart of Covent Garden for more than 350 years. Audiences have flocked to the Lane to see the greatest stars of the day in spectacular productions. The present theater was built in 1811, after a devastating fire destroyed the previous incarnation, and the Lane has now been restored to its original Georgian glory by Andrew and Madeleine Lloyd Webber. This souvenir guide tells the story of the Lane from its bawdy beginnings in Restoration London to its newly restored elegance, unearthing the secrets of a theater that has survived tragedy and fire, royal scandals, ghosts and even murder, while keeping audiences enthralled for centuries.
Chariot of the Sun An Informal History of a Siamese Family
Shane Bunnag
A rich and deeply personal journey into the labyrinth of the Thai past, following spectres and vanished landmarks across present day Bangkok. Chariot of the Sun relates the history of Siam to that of the author’s family story; the Bunnags came from Persia in the early 17th century and through daring, cunning and good fortune were to hold commanding positions of power during the 19th century. Shane Bunnag’s family saga weaves an ancient prophecy with Siamese history to give us a rich and deeply personal account of both his own family and Thai history.

Twilight A Contemporary Pastoral Poet of China
Zhang Lian, Translated by Keming Liu
Zhang Lian is a struggling potato farmer who turned to poetry to describe the harsh beauty of his environment and his daily struggle to eke out an existence. In 2000 he borrowed money from friends to print and hand-sell his first book of poems; by 2012 he had been chosen as one of the “Ten Best Rural Poets” by the Chinese Writers Association and published his eighth collection. For this volume, noted translator Keming Liu selected 100 poems, chiefly representing Zhang’s multifaceted perceptions of his world at dusk, when farmer and shepherd are blessed with a moment to daydream. His poems capture both the hopelessness and hopefulness of his austere world, and a deep belief in the redemptive power of words.

Spinal Surgery for Physiotherapists
Dr Bart Depreitere
Pain and discomfort related to the spine are extremely common, to the extent that back and neck pain may be considered part of the human condition. In most instances, interventions are not necessary. However, surgery can be required in some situations, and may be considered as a valuable option in others. This little book explains surgical reasoning and surgical techniques to non-surgeons. It aims at crossing the bridge between surgical and rehabilitation paradigms to the benefit of patients. The entire field is covered in a concise and comprehensive way, and will be a must-read in spinal rehabilitation practices.
Who is a Parsi?
Prochy N Mehta
In this book the author takes the reader through a detailed analysis of the court cases and seeks to reveal through transcripts the true picture of the community. She unveils the history of an ancient Persian trading community, the ‘Persees’ or ‘Persians’, familiar with the sea route to India from before 500 BCE, living as a tribe among the Hindus, and narrates how they rediscovered their religion and their ancient connection with Persia.

Shinkenchiku March 2022 Special Issue Feature: Japan National Stadium
Edited by Shinkenchiku-sha
The Japan National Stadium was completed at the end of November 2019. The new stadium connects to the surrounding environment through its abundant use of wood, building height reduced to a minimum, and intermediate spaces created by eaves and engawa, despite being a massive sports facility that can house over 60,000 people for games and events such as the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. This special issue captures the National Stadium through various themes, recording and introducing in detail the design concept and process, engineering, construction, etc. The magazine is intended to become a valuable document of the stadium that will be loved by the public for years to come as the “mecca” of sports in Japan.

a+u 21:12, 615 Feature: Paulo Mendes da Rocha
Edited by A+U Publishing
a+u’s December issue is dedicated to Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha. Born in Vitória, Brazil, in 1928, Mendes da Rocha played a central role in the making of a Brazilian modernism, the Paulista School in particular, through a distinct and powerful use of concrete. In his public buildings we discover something more than materiality, a profound ethic toward users and inhabitants. A new landscape and horizon emerge underneath its monumental superstructure. Together with new explanatory texts by José Paulo Gouvêa, six significant projects outlining Mendes da Rocha’s contributions to public space are featured here alongside snapshots of his home and office, as well as whimsical sketches and drawings.
a+u 22:01, 616 Feature: Dwelling Studies and Japan’s Women Architects
Edited by A+U Publishing
a+u’s January issue traces the extraordinary achievements by women architects in Japan and examines dwelling studies as a unique approach to the design of environments, centered upon living and relationship among people. Masako Hayashi, Nobuko Ogawa, Kazuyo Sejima, Satoko Shinohara, Kazuko Akamatsu are some of the representative figures. Fellow graduate and the issue’s guest editor Momoyo Kaijima defines dwelling studies as an openended approach to design that focuses on the exchange between inhabitants and designers to create spaces that embrace individuality. While dwelling studies was born within the unique institutional setting of Japan Women’s University in the midst of tumultuous social change, it has continued to enable the contemplation and realization of the contemporary.
a+u 22:02, 617 Feature: Bernardo Bader
Edited by A+U Publishing
a+u’s Feburary issue features the work of Bernardo Bader, who has stayed close to his roots in Austria’s picturesque Vorarlberg region his entire life. Since establishing his studio in 2003, the architect has rapidly accumulated a stunning oeuvre in the villages and valleys of the Bregenzerwald. While his buildings may look ordinary at first sight, they exude contemporaneity, lightness, and youth. The experience of being in and around Bader’s buildings is to feel its “dialogue with the history of the area,” and “reaction to the landscape and architectural context,” as described in the opening essay by Arno Ritter. Sixteen projects are presented alongside contextual photographs and detail drawings to capture the placeness and character of each building.

a+u 22:03, 618 Feature: Colombia
Edited by A+U Publishing
a+u’s March issue features the architecture, landscape, and cities of Colombia. A land of intoxicating natural beauty, Colombia has employed architecture as a key agent in rebuilding its cities and civil society as it recovers from decades of civil strife stemming from drug trafficking and guerrilla warfare. Medellín-based architect and guest editor Camilo Restrepo Ochoa takes us on a journey through his country, where architects create spaces as “types, elements, and instruments of architecture made to question limits, to build an inhabitable threshold that participates in the spatial experience of moving from outside to inside.” Works by 14 architectural practices across 3 generations are presented in this issue. Also featured is the city of Medellín’s remarkable achievement of reinvigorating its poorest neighborhoods through mobility and urban space.
a+u 22:04, 619 Feature: BRUTHER
Edited by A+U Publishing
a+u’s April issue features Bruther, a Paris-based architectural studio established by Stéphanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot in 2007. Describing architecture as a “combat sport,” the duo rose to international prominence with the completion in 2014 of Cultural and Sports Center in the Saint Blaise neighborhood of Paris. Rooted in the cultural geography of France, the project displays a nuanced mediation of urbanity, structure, and program that is informed by cosmopolitan currents and the architects’ belief in the malleability of buildings. Twenty-nine projects, ranging from collective housing and cultural and educational institutions to pavilions and exhibitions, are presented here to convey the full extent of Bruther’s work.
a+u 22:05, 620 Feature: Francis Kere
Edited by A+U Publishing
a+u’s May issue features Francis Kéré, a Berlin-based architect originally from the West African nation of Burkina Faso. His earliest work, Gando Primary School, demonstrated a design process that embraces the cultural and material roots of a place and its people, and as the Gando project expanded in scope to include other social amenities, Kéré’s architecture became a tool of community building and empowerment. Opening with Gando Primary School and ending with ongoing construction projects, furniture pieces, and exhibitions, this monograph presents 34 works. In addition to texts by Kéré and guest editor Andres Lepik, three essays by younger architects of African origins situate Kéré’s work in the broader context of architecture and urbanization in the African continent, invoking issues of translatability, authenticity, justice, community, and empowerment.
