Ju-Jitsu

Ju-Jitsu is a martial art based on the traditional styles of Ju- Jitsu that originated and developed in medieval Japan. The core of the art comprises a system of throws, joint locks and strikes. Based on the principal of using an aggressor’s energy to their own disadvantage, Ju-Jitsu skills can be used by men, women and children to counter aggressive situations ranging from unwanted harassment to armed physical assault. The Ju-Jitsu Foundation is an organisation with over a hundred clubs in the UK that teaches the modern and unique Shorinji Kan system of Ju-Jitsu. With over 3000 active members and several hundred instructors - including specialists in modern sport forms, traditional forms, weapons training, first aid and ShiatsuThe Jitsu Foundation is the largest single-style Ju Jitsu organisation in Britain.

Have your say Ju-jitsu was founded in 1968 in the UK. There are many celebrities that take part in this sport such as Jackie Chan and the star of Kill Bill, Uma Thurman. This sport is done all over the world but originated in medieval Japan. There have been lots of different films made using this sport such as Medallion, starring (Jackie Chan), Kill Bill starring (Uma Thurman). We got a class of Martial Arts students and got them to tell us about their favourite sport. Michelle Struts, 17, Accrington, told us she had been practising Ju-Jitsu since the age of 10 which means that she has 7 years experience of the Martial Arts.

Page 8

She explained how self defence is a good way to keep fit and would recommend it to anyone and everyone. Michelle explained the equipment she uses and showed us what type of clothes she wears to train in. “There are many different types of weapons that are used such as bag gloves, Tonfas, Nunchakus, Kick bags, Strike Mits, Samurai Swords. I have tried using most of the weapons and they were very hard to use at first but they are good fun.

Then for five minutes we all laid down on the floor and thought about what we had been doing in the lesson.

These can be very dangerous in the wrong hands. I had a lesson with Master Martin Dixon which was really hard work but I felt great after. Everyone works as a team and I felt a lot more confident. I was very tired when I came out because I’m not used to doing that much exercise! During the hour and a half session we did a warm up for 15 minutes and then we started doing the basic self-defence,

Martial Arts Academy is located on Oxford Street Accrington. For more information check out the website www.mma.uk.com If me and Jackie Chan can do it so can you.
