A blog I read is by Seth Godin’s, an insightful consultant who provides terse, laser focused insight that often applies directly to whatever I'm doing. One of his posts was entitled Are You Doing Math or Arithmetic? To summarize his blog post, there's basic, nuts and bolts "arithmetic" people do in their jobs, which is mostly repetition, going through the motions. Most of this is necessary, but there is so much more. There is "math," which is cutting edge stuff that includes as much art and intuition as it does science. The thing about running a game store is there's a lot of arithmetic. There is enough arithmetic, rote stuff that gets done over and over, that you could very easily think this is all there is to do. For most store owners, that is all there is, as far as they know, and their stores tend to be rather unexceptional because of it. You could do that job, fail, and blame the system, because you had no idea there was math involved. My game store career, like most peoples, started off with arithmetic. You need to understand margins and discounts, how to budget your purchasing, and how to set up a system to pay the bills. It’s all arithmetic. The key for my transition from arithmetic to math was education, as in seminars in which people who seemed like me were doing real math, as well as pure frustration. Is this it? Isn't there more? Followed by questions like, "what are more successful people than me doing?" Math turned out to be quite a few things beyond basic arithmetic. Paying for a cable TV ad every month and the occasional Facebook post is arithmetic. Networking with other businesses, creating events that promote your store at local game conventions, and finding community outreach opportunities is math. Math is not something you can schedule, budget or routinely write a check towards, it’s creative thinking that turns your vision into reality. While arithmetic might be paying the bills, the mathematician schemes for ways to crush costs. Where arithmetic might be about buying product when you’ve got money left over, a mathematician might create a separate purchasing budget to maximize sales. Math takes arithmetic by the hand and injects creativity and out of the box thinking. Math is better event management, better financial management, better purchasing and forecasting, better staff management, and finding and allowing others to do some of the arithmetic, so you can concentrate on your real job, mathematics. Managers do arithmetic; owners do math. Math is about finding inefficiencies and crushing them. It requires making a bunch of mistakes, to be honest, hopefully with enough foresight that they don't sink you. It's about being open to opportunity, even when your basic arithmetic skills say it can't be done, or nobody does it like that, or it’s not the job of a stable, arithmetical whiz like myself. Math is hard after all, with elements of creativity that nobody is really expecting of you. Low expectations are the enemy of math. So while I do arithmetic on a regular basis, the key for me is to remember I'm here to do math. Usually when I find myself in need of a break or change, it's because I've fallen into only doing arithmetic. It’s the post holiday season and I’m a little burned out. Arithmetic is all I’m able to think of. I’ll need some way to recharge my batteries so I can be ready for some math. It might be a vacation or some gaming or changing tasks with another employee. Really, without math I will fail, so whatever it takes to find the strength for math, I’ll do it. If as the owner, you find yourself consumed by arithmetic, those rote activities that can consume your day, you’re doing it wrong. Gary L.
