Module 4 Discussion: Worship Then and Now 1. What are the main similarities and differences between the worship of Old Israel and Christian worship today, as you know it? Similarities  In both, God is treated as holy and revered by worshipers and believers. Just like Israelites in olden Israel, Christians humble themselves any time they enter a place of worship.  In both eras, religious festivals such as the Passover and the fall festival of the tabernacle were observed, albeit under different titles. Christians and Old Israel have three festivals that rhyme, although not under similar titles, which underscore their worship similarities.  In both Old Israel and Christian worship today, people worship God in the tabernacle temple.

Differences  The Old Israel had priests from a tribe of Levi to lead them in worshiping God, a factor that is not found among Christian worship today. For Christians, anyone can become a priest.  Old Israel had a priest as the intermediaries between God and the worshippers, which is contrary to Christian worship today. For Christians, everyone can speak to God at any given time through prayers and remaining faithful to His word.  In olden Israel, worship involved offering animal and other forms of sacrifices to God, an aspect that is not present in today's Christian worship, underscoring a sharp difference between the two. 2. The tabernacle and the worship rituals were set up to emphasize God's holiness and the need for worshippers to be cleansed and forgiven to enter His presence. Do you think Christian worship, as you have experienced it, still emphasizes these themes? How or how not? I do not think Christian worship emphasizes God's holiness; they venerate him and often seek forgiveness as a way of cleansing themselves immediately they step into the temple or place of worship. However, this practice is not observed in equal measure by all Christians. Christians seek forgiveness in the place of worship and not before entering, although their religious practices and beliefs hold that one can seek forgiveness from anywhere. This underscores the differences between old Israel and Christian worship today.
