Applied Behavior Analysis

1 Applied Behavior Analysis Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science-based strategy that is used to modify behavior. It is used in various settings; these includes, as an intervention for autism, as a teaching method in classrooms, in fitness training and in organizational behavior management. In schools, ABA is applied to correct the behavior of students with mental disorders such as Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) and Autism (Roane et al., 2015). It is also used to correct the behavior of students who persistently display major behavioral challenges. Many people would benefit from the application of ABA, from children to adults; however, due to its effectiveness in the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), it has become synonymous with the treatment of the condition.

2 In a school setting, a Behavior Analyst uses ABA to support students with intellectual, emotional, behavioral and physical challenges. Typically, in schools, the goal of ABA intervention will be to develop the children’s communications skills, improve their social skills, and also increase their ability to perform daily living skills independently (Roane et al., 2015). In an organization setting, ABA is applied in businesses, government, non-governmental organizations, and industries to create significant change in individual and collective behavior. In this setting, it is commonly referred to as organizational behavior management (OBM). There are several similarities and differences between the application of ABA in schools and organizations. ABA in schools and organizations are similar to each other in that they both involve collecting data, as well as treating thoughts, emotions and behaviors. In both settings, operant conditioning and classical conditioning are used in the process of behavior transformation. The main difference between ABA in classrooms and in organizations, are the objectives of the intervention. In organizations, ABA is mostly used as a management technique to increase workforce productivity and value. In the school setting, ABA is used to modify students’ behaviors, and is particularly focused on children with various intellectual, behavioral and physical challenges. Given the differences between these two settings, my approach as an ABA specialist will be more individualized in the school environment than in organizations.
