1 Research Paper Proposal On 14th October 2020, the technological conglomerate, IBM, offered an unprecedented official apology to Lynn Conway, who had been dismissed from her job as a computer science pioneer in 1968. At the time of her dismissal, the reason tendered was that she was transgender and had revealed intentions of transitioning into a woman. While this apology may be said to have come 52 years too late, it is still important because it champions the rights of transgender communication innovators while taking into cognizance that the transgender community is well-represented in communication revolutions.

2 It is worth noting that Lynn Conway was part of a team that secretly designed the world’s fastest supercomputer. Additionally, she was responsible for the production of engineering innovations that were crucial to IBM’s advanced computers. As such, dismissing her from her job because of her transgender identity arguably rid the computing world of a massive talent. That said, the discriminatory experience that Lynn Conway went through during her time at IBM should be contextualized within the period that she was living. It is also worth considering that, at the time, the LGBTQ2AI+ movement was still in its incipient stages and, therefore, Conway did not receive the necessary support that she needed to thrive at her chosen career. Even though there has been an improvement regarding LGBTQ2AI+ rights in the ensuing years, transgender professionals working in the corporate world still face significant challenges in so far as asserting their identity is concerned. For this reason, one can use Lynn Conway’s’ experience as an entry point to investigate how minorities often get written out of the communication innovations for which they are responsible.
