Safety Survey

1 Safety Survey Although a home is considered one of the safest places to bring up a child, it is not 100% safe. Accidents occurring at home can negatively affect a child's health. As pointed out by Stanhope and Lancaster (2019), parents are responsible for assessing the home environment to determine the safety of their children. The injury prevention program (TIPP) is one of the tools used to assess home safety. This tool contains a safety checklist for different places, including the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, electrical equipment, doors and windows, and outdoor areas. The information obtained from the survey is used to guide modifications to improve safety. This paper focuses on a survey conducted to determine the home safety for a 6-month old baby and a 5-year-old child.

2 The survey shows that the home is relatively safe since parents have implemented various security measures such as guardrails, barriers to risky places such as swimming pools and balconies. Effective strategies are needed to improve the safety of these children further. The family needs safety education to enhance their ability to identify safety threats for their children and implement appropriate mitigations. Various approaches can be employed for safety education, including a discussion session and educational materials provision (Habermehl, Diekroger, Lazebnik & Kim, 2019). Parental education on the best way to teach their children safe choices and habits can also enhance children's safety at home. This information can also be printed out and distributed to a larger population.
