Patient - Doctor Interview

1 Patient Interview Interviews help to generate comprehensive information about the patient (Heuer, 2017). This information is integrated into the treatment plan to improve the outcome of care. I have conducted numerous interviews with older adults presenting with different health conditions. On January 10th, 2021, I interviewed a 76-year-old black male with disabilities living in an urban setting. The client pointed out that he had recently lost his wife in a motor accident. Although he received moral and social support from his children and grandchildren, he pointed out that he was overwhelmed by the loss. The interview was intended to determine the factors affecting the quality of life of the client.

2 The targeted questions included in the interview are: do you suffer from a chronic health condition? Do you have financial problems at home? What is your source of social support? Have you been treated for a psychological disorder? Have you experienced a decrease in energy and interest in conducting social activities? The purpose of these questions is to ascertain the client’s risk of depression. I also used the Anxiety and Depression checklist to assess the impact of depression on the client within four weeks. The checklist contains ten questions that help the client rate his feelings (Agrawal, Faruqui & Bodani, 2020). The client scored 23, indicating that he had mild depression and anxiety. I used the Therapeutic Communication approach during the interview to create a relaxing environment for the client to express his feelings. This communication approach is suitable when dealing with clients overwhelmed by unavoidable social events (Ulutasdemir, 2018). The therapeutic communication elements that make it appropriate for this patient include active listening, giving recognition, seeking clarification, silence, mindfulness, and empathy. This communication technique improves patient participation in the care process, enhances recovery, and establishes a base for patient education.
