Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret In contemporary society, people have different lifestyles. Some people know exactly what they wan t and are focused on attaining it. Other people do not have a clear of the direction they want their lives to take. An individual’s lifestyle has a significant impact on the quality of their life. Whitecollar jobs are valued more than the more manual blue-collar jobs because they are perceived to offer more stability and opportunities for advancement. However, it is important to note that there are many other viable opportunities beyond white-collar jobs. Farming is an example of blue-collar work that is vital to food security and the growth of the economy. Farming is shunned, especially by the younger generations who consider it to be dirty and laborious. If a documentary was made to show the lives of farmers, more people who feel stranded and hopeless career-wise would not discredit it as a career option. With this idea in mind, my team members and I decided to focus our documentary on the different lifestyles of different people. In the documentary, we considered the most comparable jobs are those of routines, such as university professors and farmworkers. Through further investigation and learning, we gained new knowledge of what different professions entail. Buy this excellently written paper or order a fresh one from ace-myhomework.com
We decide to focus our documentary on farmworkers because we believe that the life of an office worker is familiar to most people, but that of a farmer is not for various reasons. Firstly, they work f ar from the city, so it is not easy for city dwellers to connect with them. Secondly, farmers choose to live far from the city where arable land is available for agriculture. To facilitate comparison between white and blue-collar work, we also have to record the busy and fast-paced urban life, beca use these two distinctive scenes will certainly bring visual impact to the audience. To better understand farming and get information for the documentary, I watched a representative environme ntal documentary titled “Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret”. *Rapid advancements of the internet and digital media have made documentaries more popular. The audience's attitude towards documentaries has gradually changed from acquiring knowledge, unders tanding the truth and broadening their horizons, to hoping for a sense of experience and resonance f rom documentaries. Therefore, making a documentary on farm life will be of interest to people living in the city who would like to have a glimpse of a lifestyle that is different from their own. Most documentaries take a narrative form and are educational. Documentaries of this type adopt ric h storytelling and plot narration techniques, making them vivid and appealing. For instance, the documentary “Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret” the director uses the expository technique, has a clear storyline and an interesting plot. By being dramatic, the documentary becomes more interesting to the audience. The documentary ‘Sans Soleil’ is more difficult to understand due to its reflective technique, where no clues are used apart from the movie narrator. Additionally, the documentary also uses letters and prose as a narration technique. The documentary combines image fragments from different sites and different period, making seem more like a travel diary than a documentary film. Therefore, the main difference between “Sans Soleil” and other documentaries is its apparent lack of clear rationality and a combination of images from different periods. The documentary's narration repeatedly shuttles the audience between the cities of Japan, Africa, and Ho ng Kong. It also covers several historical events that are useful in capturing the attention of the audience. However, the stylistic devices used in this documentary are not suitable for a documentary about farming. Our documentary focuses on farming and therefore will feature many scenes of people doing agricultural work. Although some scenes of the documentary can be designed through preliminary p lanning, a majority of them should be authentic and record the present. We want the scenes of our d ocumentary to be more detailed, clear and have a smoother transition than "Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret” which had defects in the mentioned areas. The cameraman wanted to shoot as much as he could, and in some cases, some of the shots taken were not professional. That is why even some of the footage is shaky, unclear or even worse we can
only have sound but no picture. Despite these shortcomings, the audience connected with it because it gave a real picture of how farm life is. Most of the footage of the farmer's work will be shot with a hand-held camera because it will enable us to move faster, therefore capturing more detail and im portant dialogue. To ensure that the audience fully understands what the documentary is about, and therefore retain their attention, we will have 1-2 paragraphs of interview content, which will fully show our central i dea to the audience. We noticed that in "Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret", a lot of evidence a nd interview clips are incorporated to enhance the relevance of the documentary. These includes; rel evant news that have happened in the past, reports published by authoritative departments and old p hotos. The authenticity and objectivity of the documentary creation process are two essential factors, which will not only make the whole documentary retalable to the audience, but also further promot e the value and concept conveyed by the documentary. The whole documentary focuses on sustaina ble development, and particularly targets the environment and resources. The documentary provides a background of the reasons that inspired its making. The director of the documentary watched a film called “An Inconvenient Truth(2006)”, that highlighted the dangers of environmental degradation. Through this film, he learned that it takes 6 liters of water to make a hamburger, among other alarming facts about the issues facing the environment. He thus began a series of investigations and interviews, hoping to get information that will lead to environmental co nservation. The director uses a simple approach to express his central idea to the audience. He states that the protection of the environment and resources can start with consuming less meat products, a nd a small positive habit, if performed consistently, can change the world. This idea has inspired me to seek out a deeper theme for our documentary. The beginning of the documentary will be narrated in the form of a conventional linear story. In add ition, the theme can be introduced from another perspective. Audiences should be encouraged to think of what the meaning of life is to them, and whether they need to follow the structure of the society. The document should make the audience think whether they truly appreciate the food they eat, and whether they think about where it came from, and who produced it. We can use these questions as a starting point for the documentary. In other words, with the increasingly fast pace of life, the words "fast", "convenient" and "efficient" have become the key words of our life. In order to adapt to this rapid pace of life, animal husbandry and animal farms are forced to hasten production and no longer put safety and quality first, because profit is their priority. As the breeder in the documentary ‘Food. Inc’ mentioned, “this is not a farm anymore, it's just mass production, it's all about business.” The original ecological farms are slowly ignored by the public. As our group has been in contact with Fin and Farm which put supporting local sustainability as their main goal,
it would fit well with the theme of our group documentary. Those questions mentioned above can make a more profound documentary, thus attracting a larger audience. In terms of narrative structure, I am deeply inspired by the documentary ‘Food.Inc’ whose distinc tive shooting style capture one’s attention. In addition to the use of tracking shot on working routine and focus shot on interviews, there are a lot of close up shots in the documentary. The documentary features a large number of animals and food. It also contains several scenes which only show one th ing on screen, such as chicken, cow, apple or cabbage, thus making it more impactful and memorable. ‘Food Inc’ is divided into several chapters, and each chapter has a main theme; this ma kes it easy for the audience to follow the theme and rhythm of the film, and also helps to answer the audience’s questions step by step. ‘Food Inc’ shares the same narrative methods and plot as ‘Cowsp iracy: The Sustainability Secret’, which will also be adapted in our documentary. The background music is also one of the most noticeable features of the two environmental documentaries. In the beginning of both the documentaries, the background music is cheerful and relaxing. This is intended to capture and retain the attention of the audience, thus making them want to watch more of the documentary. In the middle of the documentaries, as the plot continues to intensify, the background music also changes also changes to reflect the moods in the various scenes. For instance, in scenes where the topic is the damage that has been done to the environment, the tempo of the music increases to evoke feelings of horror. At the end of the documentary, when all the questions are well-answered and a solution to the problem is identified, the background music becomes cheerful and relaxing again. Our documentary will begin by questioning whether the migration of people from rural to urban areas will contribute to food shortages in future. The documentary will examine the daily lives of farmers, shedding light on the work they do and how they live. Some scenes of the documentary will show the typical life of a person who does a white-collar job and lives in the city. This will enable the audience to clearly see the contrast between farm work and office work. Ts and the lifestyle differences between people who do white-collar jobs and those who do blue-collar jobs will be presented and discussed. This documentary is important because it presents new possibilities for those who feel that they have no opportunities or direction in life. Our documentary will show the public that farming is just as important as office work because it facilitates the production of food, which is a basic need. It will also show that it is possible to earn a decent livelihood from agriculture, sometimes even exceeding what people earn from office work. Additionally, farming is satisfying because It does not follow routine as strictly as office work. Therefore, unlike people’s misconceptions, farming is not a menial or dirty job.
The documentary will help to create more job opportunities for those Accordingly, a new way of life will emerge for those who have no directions in life, so that they are able to find most suitable way of life for themselves. The topic selection of documentary usually comes from life, but in the process of production, the plot method of film and television is added to make it more understandable. Too much pure recording in the documentary will make the audience feel the narrative plot is jumbled, and too much plot will make the documentary lose the characteristics it had when it was born. Therefore, the key to the creation of every documentary is to balance the relationship between the two.
