Our coursework takes you outside the classroom and into the “living classroom” of the study abroad city, where you can see, learn and experience international educational objectives. Through experiential learning, you interact more closely with your environment, internalizing your understanding of the culture in which you are engaged. As a result, you will return home to the United States more capable of applying what you have learned in school and potentially in your future career. In an increasingly global economy, a major in Modern
Drawing from a long tradition and respect for the world’s diverse languages and cultures and from New York City’s vibrant multilingual and multicultural communities and institutions, the department of Modern Languages at BMCC offers a wide range of courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian and Spanish that aim to develop student linguistic proficiency and cultural competence. Its faculty specializes in and teaches at all levels courses in language, literature and culture.
Arabic is now a key factor in understanding and negotiating crucial contemporary global issues. Our courses aim to develop all five skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, writing and culture. Our goal is to train students to read and listen to primary sources and to converse with Arabic speakers anywhere in the world. Chinese
China’s long history—more than 5,000 years—and its splendid traditions in literature, the arts, and cuisine make learning to speak Chinese an exploration and adventure. It is the most widely spoken first language in the world! Chinese Is important for your career, is easy, mentally stimulating, useful, fun, and interesting! French
Instead of asking the question: “why learn French?” Maybe you should ask yourself: “why not learn French?” Read, write and speak French with proficiency. Understand the social, political, economic and cultural evolution of contemporary Europe, Canada and French-speaking African and Caribbean countries. You are about to embark on a unique journey of learning, discovery and cultural integration! Our program encompasses Spanish in elementary, intermediate and advanced language courses. Its purpose is to develop student skills in communication across ethnic, ideological and national boundaries, as well as, help students acquire a deeper understanding other cultures.
Languages provides skills that monolingual students do not have. A major in Modern Languages (with options either in French, Italian or Spanish) will prepare you for a career in international affairs, business, education, and translation in both the public and private sectors. In New York City in particular, doctors, educators, health professionals, lawyers, financial analysts and advisors, and non-profit and government professionals— all benefit from mastering a second language. Through its courses, MLD promotes the interdisciplinary study of language by encouraging students to take courses in related fields. The program takes a communicative approach to learning. The principal objectives are to develop fluency in the written and spoken language and to familiarize students with global languages, literature and culture. Students from all disciplines at BMCC are invited to enroll in language courses, creating a dynamic learning environment. In this multidisciplinary program, students develop language competence along with knowledge of global cultures. Our courses are given in the target language unless otherwise specified. Language study also gives our students access to a world of opportunities, including international study abroad programs. We also encourage students to participate in our Student Clubs for extra- curricular activities and networking opportunities with kindred spirits and to contribute to our student-led literary magazines.
