ABSTRACT

“Architecture is like writing. You have to edit it over and over so it looks effortless.”

Acording to the syllabus of IV/I prescribed by Tribhuwan University, students of architecture are required to work in an arcitectural firm for atleast 90 days (14 weeks). This period is termed as Practicum.

Its is a specialized field of study, that is designed to provide supervised practical application of a previously studied theory. One should learn under the supervision of practicing architects as an apprentice architect regarding the office management, project handling, bye laws, client dealings, site works etc.

ABSTRACT

A practicum report is an explanation of what one has done during practicum and their outcome. As per the requirement of the course, I Yojana Acharya engaged myself as an trainee architect under an architectural firm ArchSolar Designs.

During this period, I was involved in various projects as well as site visits. This report contains all the works assigned and completed by me during the practicum.

Creative ideas and design works are only fulfilled when it goes for construction and is completed on the given site. so the course is designed in a view to develop the overall ability of a student and experience the realistic side of the profession.

Architecture being a distinct academic discipline, extends beyond the bound of theoretical knowledge. One involved in any field can only attain a better understanding of the field, once they have completely gone through it practically. It is easier for one to attain a better grasp of the knowledge through prac tice than through the use of books. Similarly, in architecture, though thetheoretical knowledge goes into the in depth analysis, it cannot be completely fulfilled until and unless the theoretical knowledge is practiced in the practical field. Hence, practicum is a platform where we get an opportunity to be involved in the practical world of architecture, where the designs and drawings that we prepare on paper comes to be concretized on the ground of reality.

This practicum course in B.Arch. IV/I curriculum is intended to endow the students of architecture with a base for using their theoretical knowledge that they gained during their class hours which helps them to work more efficiently with self confidence in the future, with their own ability when they put their step in the actual pro fessional architectural world. During the design projects in class, we just put our imaginative ideas into the design consideration regardless of any constructional restrains, economy and many other things. But in practicality, they might be infeasible. In the class projects, we, ourselves being the virtual clients, design according to our wish. But when we design in the real life, the design is for the client, meaning his decision proves to be the most, which we have to trail up. So, most of the times, we have to compromis in our ideas. This practicum teaches us how to interact with the clients and how to convince them if their stipulate isn’t feasible and appro -

on paper is an easy task, but during the process of concretizing them, many problems maybe raised which we aren’t conscious of until it is confronted in the real practice. Hence, practicum proves to be beneficial in the exposure of those factual problems and helps us to experience the design by ourselves. In architectural field, along with the architects, many other allied professionals are involved in the creation of any built spaces. Practicum teaches us the team spirit to work in coordination with those personals. Moreover, the ethical norms like the essence of endeavor, commitment and enthusiasm in our work, are all learnt during the internship period.

Introduction

5 INTRODUCTION

Objective of practicum

To understand the range of field up to which and architectural firm should deal with the project.

07060504030201

To adapt to the corporate world and learning the rules and regulations of the business.

6 OBJECTIVE

To further develop research skill, personal skill and communication skill.

To gain an opportunity to be familiar with the professional field while utilizing the academic knowledge gained in previous semesters and consolidate their knowledge.

The objective of this practicum is to acquaint us with the various architectural and other issues. The institute provide us ac quaintance with the theoretical aspect of architecture. But this does not build the architect to cope with the practical circumstances. It is necessary for every architect to gain knowledge of professional life, which is gained through practicum. The practicum session has been planned with the following objectives:

To work under the supervisiom of senior architects and learn from their experience and design idealogies.

To compare and contrast between academic teachings and professional life.

To know the general concept of working method of an architectural firm.

ECIFFO ELIFORP

In this context, the essence of every project, be functionality, aesthetics, society, heritage or economy, identified and served accordingy. The projects at ARCHSOLAR range from scale luxury hotels to small interior spaces, each with it’s own personality. The variation in design requirements renders each project with its own unique spirit. There is no hierarchal inequality in the offce although I was a trainee in the office. This made the communication and team work better. I felt like I had equal participation in every project as my senior architects.

ARCHSOLAR?WHY

I have been updated with ARCHSOLAR since a year. Their type of project and quality of work had been captivating me since then. Also my keen interest has always been towards hospi tality because of their rich and luxury architecture whether exterior or interior. Similarly, the qualification of principal architects are praiseworthy.

design is established by Ar. Shreejay Tuladhar and Ar. Arunima Dev with the years of independent practice. Ar. Shreejay Tuladhar is a Havard Graduate who has worked in Page WSoutherland, USA that comes under top 22 architecture firm of the world. Ar. Arunima Dev has been In-house architect of Hyatt Regency, Nepal for 4 years. Their accomplished experience in architecture field has given emphasis to research and design.

At archsolar, every project is treated as a creative variance of functionality and beauty, where multiple possiblities are taken into consideration to create a per fect harmony between two. Every project is treated not only as another mass, but as an opportunity to explore the effective transformation and aesthetic aspects of the environment and as a potential benefactor of the society. Although clients tend to approach designers for primarily spatial purposes, th project at ARCHSOLAR strive to provide an enrchment in the user’s experience of not only the space but also al the aspects related to it.

ARCHSOLAR DESIGN

When I was called for the trainee interview, I was asked alot of architecture related and detailed question. They explained me about their projects and working environment which I thought would be suitable for me to work. I joined the office on 6th of Baisakh. I completed 97 days working days as a trainee architect. Ever since then, my experience in practical field of architecture has been knowledgeable and fruitful.

The finalized plan is west facing, front facade of the building is fully glazed on addition to being west facing. This was one of the biggest problem faced during the designing of gym block.

To encounter this problem large overhang roof was proposed which compli mented the built structure.

Calculation of the overhang length was done by Ar. Shreejay Tuladhar by doing glare analysis.

Satellite kitchen is a food service establishment where food is stored, prepared, portioned or packaged for service else where. It is different from the central kitchen as it is created to specifically cater to 1 outlet when the central kitchen cannot do so due to geographical disadvantages. While a central kitchen is created to cater to all the outlets of the restaurant within the serviceable region.

Front facade was designed to be of glass so there is space left between facade and staircase so as not to distrub the clean modern look.

Outddor Seating with toughen glass used as covering was the approved design. The tough ened glass would cost much high and time to be imported would be more because of recent changes in government policy.

So, CGI sheets was used instead of the toughened glass. Ceraboard was used to cover the purlin and CGI sheet for clean look.

When I joined the firm this project was on construction phase and I was given task to solve the site problem and give proper solutions to site Mostchanges.ofthe changes was because of government stopping import of material which caused price hike of materials and the estimated cost happened to be more than periviously published BOQ. So, alternate options were done with out compromising the final output of the project.

Cera board is used because it can resist the heat produced by CGI sheet and is a rigid, self supporting and insulating product and it also has good resistance to physical damage.

I learned about the use of back splash on the counter top of basin. A backsplash is a section of material added onto the wall behind a sink or a counter, usually in a kitchen. Tiles are one of the most common types of backsplash materials. The main purpose backsplashes is to provide an easy-to-clean surface so that messes or splashes.

BACKPACKER HOSTEL

Hostels and Guesthouses are the first choice as an accommodation for real travel ers. Unlike tourists, real travelers (“backpacker”) depend on cheap, affordable accommodation when traveling the world on a small budget, having no income for several months or even years. Especially young people aged 20-30 traveling alone or in groups often share accommodation with others in dormitory rooms.

First option was designed such that the mirror had irregular shape and led strip light along its perim eter behid mirror giving it some depth and nice look.

BACKPACKER HOSTEL 63

Second optiom was designed being inspired from trending mirror designs which looks like semi-cir cle or half moon shape. This mirror would enhance the asthetic look of the hostel.

Third option was designed such that it had small bulbs with hidden wire along the perimeter of the mirror. The border around the mirror would hide the wiring of bulb.

Fourth option was also done inspired from trending mirror that looks like leaf and is hung to the wall.

This is the one line meaured drawing done after site measurement for the calculation of carpet area. This was first site measurement and measured drawing I did after joining the firm. During this process I learned the different ways of site measurement.

MATERIAL

The design of the living had to be designed in a sophiscated manner yet in a homely way. For that, the choice of color and material has made a great impact. Light wood has been choosen for furniture and warm color for wall while the flooring is wooden parquet not allowing to pass cold even in the ground floor.

Japnese door is used while connecting living room with bedroom as per the client choice.

residence project was at municipal phase when I joined the firm. As all the planning was done I was involved in drafting the elevation from provided plan, electrical drawing and to do sanitary drawing. The basic plannning concept is based on duplex style with a central courtyard. For the facade, mediterrean style of architecture is chosen. It has features like arch windows, brick and stucco painted white, textured white walls combine with natural woods for a warm, inviting atmosphere. Also natural lights and views is maximized.

What is a duplex?

Each unit has a separate entrance and there is no interior connection between the two units. If there is outdoor space on the lot, the residents of the two units must share it, or it will be partitioned.

A duplex is a multi-family home that has two units in the same building. These two units always share a common wall, but the floor plan can vary. Units can be arranged either side by side or stacked on top of one anoth er, each occupying an entire floor or two of the building.

Mediterranean style varies depending on the specific architectural influences, but many of these homes showcase similar exterior elements. Typical characteristics include:

LEARNINGS

v. The stirrup near the pillar is placed more closely in the beam(4” c/c) because it needs to tolerate more shear force at the connection of beam and column. While at the central of the beam due to less shear force, stirrups are provided are more distance (6” c/c)

Mild steel- low carbon steel Tor Steel-Fe415

iii. Extra bars are added on the upper side of the rebar mesh to prevent the hogging moment and also flexing of the salb.

vii. The sizes of stirrups are 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm but most commonly 8mm is used.

iv. The rebars are larger in diameter on the lower floors of the building because more load are beared by the lower floors.

The building is constructed in a luxury neo-clasical style. It has features of neo-classical design like grand scale, extensive use of doric col umn, vaulted and groin ceiling in different rooms, dome in the design. The building has been designed by Ar. Bibuti Man Sigh. It took around five years for the building block to be built. Now, the interior and exterior finishing design is being done by Archsolar Design since 6 months. . The detailing is done very precisely both of interior and exterior .

Pond and Deck Details

I designed first option such that -The curves of deck and pond ended on same line.

This was the previously approved design for pond and deck. Changes had to be done as -Client prefere’s symmetry and hence wanted deck and pond to end at same line. -The shape of pond was not fully circular because of pizza stand area so that also had to be updated.

POND UP UP DECK

While the option 1 already encountered all the problem, option 2 was de signed because addition of another curve at end also it being steps would be complicated. Also it only differed in 300mm for having same ending line.

-The problem of sharp edges was encountered by addition of curved ending. -The pond outline was also extended for it to have undisturbed semicircular outline.

Client wanted both lotus pond and fountain on specified area which was not possible because lotus plant needed stagnant water and as for fountain the water need to be running. So, for this problem another partation was added for lotus water to be not affected by the fountain water.

The designing and detailing of ceiling is a long and tedeous process. The oval shape ceiling vault was demanded by the client. So, equal offset from the wall and beam was taken i.e 300mm. Again offset of 700mm was taken from the inner oval making it look like a vault like structure. For the passage, coffer ceiling is chosen where as ceiling above the sofa follows the shape of the ceiling.

Conclusion

“Architecture is like writing. You have to edit it over and over so it looks effortless.”

In this period of over 90 days, I’ve been involved projects having design, conceptualization, architectural visualizations, walkthrough, working drawings, preparation of municipal set, etc. with a large array of variety of works involving, residences, commercial complexes, hotels, etc. that have been a companion in this journey of internship I have learned that designing in college used to be about employing out of the world designs while in professional life, it is much different to stick to simple but effective and functional design. All these could have never been possible without the regular supervision and consultation of the supervisors, teachers, seniors and collegues.

122

Architect, it has made me realise how much I’ve grown as a person and the level of confidence I have endured as a student to a Trainee Architect. This period of time has brought a great change in my mindset as a student and learned what it feels like to work professionally.
