Our kids were giggling all the way through with some laugh out loud moments for us adults too. We appreciated the life lessons about friendships and teamwork and the kids appreciated the rewind button so they could see the talking dogs again and again.

To qualify as a real superhero, participants were required to get their costumes out, be they bought or hand-made and be at the designated meeting spot at 2pm sharp! The unbeaten record, set in Australia in 2010, saw 1580 superheroes gathering at Federation Square in Melbourne (www.experiencenottinghamshire.com). Unfortunately, we won’t find out just yet if we’ve broken the record as the results of can take up to a year to be verified. The superhero scene has grown in more recent years thanks to some of the greatest caped-crusader movie releases
from the likes of Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon so we’d say we stand a pretty good chance at being the new title holders since over 8,000 people RSVP’s to the event! Superheroes of all ages were seen to be enjoying themselves on fairground rides, brushing up their archery skills, taking part in crafts and competitions and listening to a story or two provided by the Nottingham Playhouse. We can’t wait for the results!

Parenting Parenting is no easy thing is it? There are no ‘one size fits all’ solutions to anything and yet we always seem to be worrying that we aren’t getting it right, looking for answers on anything from how many hours sleep our little ones should be getting each day to which type of skincare products are gentlest on their skin. We certainly don’t think we have all the answers but most of us here at Achieve have some experience in the confusing world of parenting and inevitably want to share our latest finds with you, whether that is in the shape of products to make your life easier or toys and games which we know they will love.

Parent Life
babiesrus.com
A few days ago, I watched an hilarious clip from a Michael Mcintyre show sent to me as a link from my ‘Yummy Mummy’ whatsapp group. I knew it would be good before I even clicked the link as we often share funny parenting things to make us giggle on those days when exhaustion and parenting mania sets in. In the clip, he describes the way in which those who don’t have children discuss having them in the future with wistful comments such as ‘you will be such a great dad’ and ‘imagine having little mini-me’s of us cutely running around the place?’ The whole clip was basically a take on the concept that these people have no idea what it’s really like or what will hit them when their offspring come along. As he described many little scenes from his everyday family life, I was howling with laughter at the accuracy of it all and how it was drawing so many parallels to my own home life a particular highlight being the idea that before having children leaving the house is as easy as simply walking out of the front door and with children, it’s one of the most stress full moments of your day. ‘Who has shoes on?’, ‘Who hasn’t had breakfast?’ , ‘Where is your sister and ‘Do you have your book bag?’ Are all common questions in the mornings in our house and getting them all in the car and ready to go feels like such a huge accomplishment. Gone are the days of popping out anywhere with nothing but your phone and wallet in hand.
babiesrus.com
mooblesandtoobles.com
The funny man then went on to describe the sleep deprivation even the word doesn’t really do the experience justice! Pre children you would lean into your other half give them a kiss and wish them a good night, and that would be it. You would sleep all night undisturbed. After children, Michael commented he and his wife wished each other good luck for whatever the night had in store. I can completely relate, when I had my first baby 5 years ago; I remember feeling shocked at how exhausted I was. I would fight the sleep deprivation, annoyed that others could sleep, and I couldn’t, I would argue with my husband at who was more exhausted and neither of us ever won. Then when I had my second child a year ago I didn’t even notice the sleep deprivation truthfully. I put that down to simply being accustomed to being tired. Permanently tired. Of course, children are the best things to ever happen to you and you wouldn’t have it any other way; it just doesn’t hurt to share the insider jokes occasionally does it? It doesn’t hurt to remind ourselves on those days when it all feels a bit overwhelming that we aren’t the only ones. Besides, someone once told me that parenting is easy if you are a good person, that if you are a good person you will be a good parent it’s as simple as that. Sure occasionally you will make mistakes, say the wrong thing, let them have too many chocolates that week but if they are happy and healthy as a result of being brought up by you, then that’s the main thing, right?

Jae’s Top Tips · Introduce plain, cooked vegetables first
Weaning a baby with eczema Jae Rance, director of the company producing the miraculous ScratchSleeves gives us her top tips on weaning a baby with eczema Firstly, certain foods can worsen eczema, so they must be introduced with caution. Secondly, a baby who has suffered with eczema in their first three to six months is more likely to have an allergy to one or more foods. While the Department of Health doesn’t recommend weaning before a baby is 17 weeks old, it’s not advised to leave weaning beyond six months. Babies need additional nutrition and there is growing evidence to suggest that introducing solid foods between the ages of four and seven months has a protective effect against developing food allergies.
You can read more about this and other baby eczema related topics in the ScratchSleeves blog www.parenting-plus-eczema.co.uk. ScratchSleeves, the scratch mitts that really work. 90% aller of food g to ju ies are r st 8 elate f milk oods: eg d tree- ,peanuts gs, nut , soy, s, wheat fish , a nd shel lfish .
· Look out for immediate reactions. But be aware that there could be a delay of two hours and beyond for symptoms to present themselves. Allergic reactions can be cumulative so may not be obvious to start with. Keeping a symptom diary can help you keep track of any patterns · Try to isolate foods which may cause a problem by introducing known allergens one at a time, leaving a gap of 3 days before you introduce another · Introduce new foods during the morning or early afternoon. This will enable you to deal with any adverse reactions during the day when your local GP surgery is open · Eczema commonly occurs on the faces of babies and toddlers making eating uncomfortable. Protect sore skin by applying your baby’s usual eczema emollient cream just before mealtime
Foods which can aggravate eczema most commonly are milk, eggs, peanut and tomatoes.

Coping with the Moro reflex In your baby’s first four to six months their primitive startle response may have you experiencing a lack of sleep and a lot of stress. We explain what the Moro reflex is and how to manage it Babies are born with a number of instinctive impulses and the Moro reflex is one that can be quite tricky to handle. Your little one can be fast asleep in your arms but you know that as soon as you lay them down there comes the dreaded cry. When the back of their head is let go, your tiny primate thinks they’re falling and the startle reflex kicks in.
Making a statemention
Mike Edwards, Managing Director of Snugglebundl – the only product that solves the problem of resting a sleeping baby, said: “We’re still primates. All primates sleep with their babies on them; that’s why we have long arms and hair for the baby to hang on to.”
The Newborn Baby Company (NBC) celebrated the first birthday of their very first store this year and invites you to visit them in Bicester to fall in love with all things natural.
Unfortunately, we don’t have the time or the natural instincts as we become adults to hold on to our clever tots as much as we might like.
Specialising in organic baby clothes, newborn baby gifts and accessories from birth up to three years, they’ve established themselves in a league of their own. The NBC take pride in stocking as many UK made and organic, fair trade brands as they possibly can!
“We have things to do, we make provisions, we have to cook and we can’t do all this whilst we have a baby on us. We don’t just pick berries all day anymore!” The Snugglebundl solves this problem. Mike says babies can be picked up and put down undisturbed for hours with the use of the soft baby wrap.
-Organic fash
Tara Dunn, who owns the charming, organic-loving business, gains inspiration from her own little boy. He regularly dons one of his Mummy’s carefully hand-picked NBC tops and dungarees. With such a wide range of choice and diversity in design it can often be hard to choose which items you like the best! Tara creates special Mystery Boxes for boys or girls to accommodate a variety of budgets making your delivery an extra special surprise! The baby boutique aims to provide you with unique brands that won’t be found on the high street such as Blade & Rose, Jelly Babe Organics, Bathing Bunnies and The Little Tailor. Online and in store you will find all the things you will need to express your little person’s personality and have them look as individual as you are. When the usual baby blue and pink is just not cutting it, go to www.thenewbornbabycompany.co.uk Or visit; 11 Deans Court, Bicester, Oxon, OX26 6RD for the full shopping experience! Don’t forget to sign up to their newsletter to get lots of exclusive offers and discounts!
It supports the neck and back of the head in a way that no other product does, meaning seeing friends and getting the tea and the washing up done is no longer a dilemma. Mike is also concerned with the use of convenient travel systems. Babies tend to spend a lot of time in these removable cot beds and car seats but he explained that deaths have occurred from babies spending hours and hours in portable travel systems. “People have said to me ‘It’s a lot of money for a blanket,’ but I say you’re getting full head support for your baby, help with back problems and post birth recovery, a baby that gets more healthy sleep, a breast feeding cover, play mat, cosy wrap as well as a whole travel system for the price of a garment. But most of all, less disturbance and stress during your first months of parenting- priceless.” Eliminate stress and worry with a Snugglebundl of your own. Every time anyone anywhere takes a picture of one of my children I have to have it. It’s like I am actually unable to let the image disappear to the back of the camera roll never to be printed out; I instinctively want to cherish and keep it forever more. Perhaps it’s because I feel so aware these days of how fleeting time is when bringing up children, how you can blink and suddenly your baby is a toddler and then blink again, and they are standing in front of you in their school uniform as you look on with tears welling at just how precious it all is and how incredibly fast time moves. It’s the same with the drawings they make, the finger print pictures and the castings, once they have left their mark on something in this world I simply can’t let that mark go, that by dismissing it, I am somehow missing it. Well, I know it’s all very sentimental isn’t it but yeah, I admit it; I am a full-blown sentimental mother. We are lucky that we can capture these moments aren’t we? That through the power of photography, we can remember and cherish these milestones and moments to keep forever. Armed with our smart phones, we can capture it all every step of the way! So many of us are guilty of racking up the camera roll number but failing to actually get the prints and put them on the wall for all to share. That’s where finding a professional photographer comes in. By booking a session with a professional photographer you can capture a moment in your child’s life and get the beautiful prints at the end to keep forever as something tangible. Castings are another wonderful way to capture a moment in time and make ideal gifts for the sentimental mums just like me.

MUMRENUER What makes a Mumpreneur? 14
Being a mum and running a business is no easy choice in life and it certainly takes a certain type of woman. The kind of woman who juggles the school run, packed lunches, a team of staff and emails all before 9 am. She is the kind of woman who stays up ‘til the early hours designing a web page, creating stock or writing a cash-flow forecast and then gets up the next day and simply gets on with it. These type of women are everywhere you know, not that you would know it as they rarely complain-they just get on with being successful and doing it all pretty quietly with sheer grit and determination.
Zanib at Sweet Apple Publishers Zanib’s determination is the backbone of her publishing company and self penned book range. After suffering one knock back too many of her first book from publishers, she decided to publish her own work! Just, you know, easy as that! She felt there was a distinct lack of diversity in books available on the market for ethnic minorities and wanted to create a range of books which represented all kinds of diversity. So she did. Sweet Apple Publishers are home to books that children adore and with their accessibility to all, they have become firm favourites for so many children. The company is the result of the drive of Zanib, who told us that she thinks about her business 24/7!
Vicky at E-Bop.tv It’s fair to say that Vicky at the revolutionary E-Bop.tv channel has had to balance quite a bit in her life to be able to launch the new online TV portal for children. Featuring educational, award winning shows that parents can be in control of, it’s ground breaking entertainment for your little ones. Having two children diagnosed with complex medical needs, Vicky created the channel and shows through hard work, a caring attitude and a committment to making a difference. One show in particular, ‘The Hilarious Adventures of Herbie Hound,’ was created by her as she wanted to show the world how having a pet can change the lives of children suffering from serious conditions. Launching in 2016, the channel has been a labour of love for this mumpreneur, but from the looks of things the difference it will make to people’s lives is nothing short of amazing.
Vanessa at DinkyTinks Vanessa started DinkyTinks, a personalised textile gifts company, after her first babe was born. A graphics designer by trade, she found that the prospect of returning to work after maternity leave was up one that she wasn’t relishing. After a little freelancing for a while, whilst designing clothing and accessories at home, she soon discovered that there was something in her hobby as other mums were requesting her designs. As time went on Vanessa found herself learning how to create her own online store of a night and burning the midnight oil to create a collection of designs that the public would love. Her hard work paid off, and, she says despite life being full throttle for a few years, it was all worth it. Good work Vanessa!

Judging a book by its diversity Author, Zanib Mian, runs Sweet Apple Publishers; the producers of fun and quirky books celebrating diversity across the board. The keen writer attempted to publish her first book, Adam and the Tummy Monster, in 2009. After rejections from publishing houses she decided to become the publisher herself! “I felt there was a lack of diverse books for ethnic minorities. I wanted to create fun diverse books that represent all kinds of diversity,” Zanib told us. “I wanted to establish a publishing house that would make it a main priority.” Sweet Apple publishes stories featuring characters from all walks of life. “Oddsockosuarus is a non-issue book that just happens to be a mixed-race child with big springy hair, brown skin and rosy cheeks.” The busy mother and business woman is proud to give children character to connect with and loves hearing from parents. One father of an autistic child thanked her saying that his son never liked books before he read My Dads Beard. He loved the big text and large colourful pictures! Zanib’s advice to other mums starting up a business is to set time apart: “You’ll find that you’re thinking about it 24 hours a day!” Find Sweet Apple Publishers on Facebook and @SweetAppleBooks on Twitter now
It’s a dogs life A TV show inspired by a beloved pet dog has now teamed up with up and coming online channel, E-Bop.tv! The creator of ‘The Hilarious Adventures of Herbie Hound,’ Vicky Brook, wanted to show the world how having a pet can change the lives of children suffering from serious conditions. Having two children diagnosed with complex medical needs, she felt it was important to explore the benefits that pets, and dogs in particular, can have on family life. Marketing her product has proved essential to her business and was able to launch her TV show and books with the help of Atomic Kitten’s Natasha Hamilton. Vicky has worked through this stage in her life with a caring attitude and continuous support for those around her. A percentage of all proceeds goes, appropriately, to Dogs Trust and Birmingham Children’s Hospital who have been a huge help to Vicky and her children who have both supported Herbie in all his adventures. Bespoke gifts Vanessa Bell of award winning gift company DinkyTinks is a true Mumpreneur. Having built her customised textiles company from scratch, all whilst running a busy family home, through hard work, determination and a mum’s ability to juggle and juggle well, Vanessa is an inspiration. A magazine designer by trade, Vanessa found when it was time to get back to work after her first born it was a conflict of needing to work but not wanting to leave her baby. So, she didn’t. When her baby was two she joined a publishing company and worked fewer hours, yet found that what she was doing in her spare time was taking over her work; “I had started designing personalised T-shirts for my own DinkyTinks at home and other mum’s began requesting my designs for their own children, even asking for my work to grace other products such as P.E Kit Bags!”. Today DinkyTinks is home to an exciting and vibrant collection of personalised gifts such as Flip Flops, P.E Kits, Aprons and Cotton Bags for Life. Non-verbal communication heals children’s emotional and behaviour problems. Communication is 55% face and body, use of movement and gesture, so therefore when observing children it’s important for the therapist to be able to tune into the non-verbal cues as well as the verbal cues. I have often viewed non-verbal communication as communication which goes deeper than verbal communication, the client does not need words to communicate feelings which come from the unconscious. I believe this is one of the most important aspects in understanding and developing relationships with children. The latest neuroscience of relationships uses mirror neurons, which are dedicated to perception and movement. These connect the child and the Play Therapist by linking visual and motor experience involving the use of gesture and empathetic attunement. J.T, a boy aged 7 years presented nonverbally, he held his body stiff and spent the first few weeks playing in silence. I was aware by his sudden tightening of J.T’s body that he was aware of my every move in the play room. As the therapy progressed I noted how J.T was gently and silently letting out his anger and resentment. Through gently knocking over symbols, these feelings were acted out in such a subtle way they may have been missed. I was able to reflect these feelings to J.T enabling him to make much larger movements which turned into a throwing game. He used this game to take turns with me and use his voice to make up the rules. The final weeks of therapy with J.T were spent using gross motor movements with slashing actions through fighting and mirroring. Both his mother and class teacher reported a big increase in confidence. This is an edited version of an article by Juliet Moss, a PTUK Certified Practitioner in Therapeutic Play, who has worked within a Sure Start Children’s Centre for the past 4 ½ years. Her role within the centre is to work with families and children under 5 years of age planning play based activities to encourage the development of communication and emotional development.

Emotions run high at remarkable fashion We went to a fashion show earlier this month…but this was not just any fashion show! This was a catwalk like no other! Taking place at the Millennium Hotel in Knightsbridge, London, Anna Kennedy presented Wear it for Autism along with fellow supporters Denise Welch, Caprice, Jane Moore, Richard Mylan and The Drifters very own Ray Lewis. We walked in to a reception of flash photography and sparkling dresses and the twinkle in the eye of every winner chosen earlier in the year to receive this star-studded treatment was as dazzling as the victors themselves. With the chinking of wine glasses and buzz of the crowd behind us, we headed upstairs to more glitz and glamour and celebrity faces. We were honoured to support an event that celebrates the work and recognises the hardships of people with autism and those who care for them. continuously worked hard to raise awareness of autism and show the world what people with autism can do! For her non-stop campaigning and can-do attitude we presented Anna with our Autism Campaigner of the Year Award!
This year’s winners….
We are sure the accolade means as much to her as it does to us and with emotions already running high, Anna’s acceptance speech left the audience feeling inspired and ready to take on the world!

With emotions heightened as we watched in awe at the winners strutting their stuff on the catwalk, it was hard to think of this as a fashion show at all. This was a night that meant so much more. The event gave people living with autism a well-deserved night off. It was a chance to express themselves through the clothes that were designed by Kaffa Mockbill based on each of the winner’s personal style and jewellery by Miglio; a memorable and exciting night to admire and respect their lives and work.

Hillingdon Manor
-More than a school
Hillingdon Manor is a school quite unlike any other. Providing a strong, stable and supportive environment for young people on the autistic spectrum, it is a progressive school where students aged 4 to 19 discover foundations to give them the confidence and skills to lead a happy life. Established by prolific Autism campaigner Anna Kennedy, OBE in 1999, the school has changed countless lives for the students who attend and their families. Anna has poured blood sweat and tears into creating an educational environment for students in which children can thrive, learn and grow, and ultimately providing a place in which they receive the education they deserve. The Hillingdon story begins when Anna 20
was turned away from 25 schools for her two sons. Not one to settle for second best, Anna was hell bent on creating a school environment that was good enough for her sons and became increasingly disheartened, concerned and angry that no such place existed. After bumping into a mum who was in a similar situation, the two started a support group in Anna’s garage and after hearing about a local school that was to be demolished she set about claiming it as her own and starting her own school. If she couldn’t find one, she would make one! So, she re-mortgaged her house and created her own. Yes, you read that right, she built her own school. Anna transformed a derelict building in Middlesex, West London into Hillingdon Manor School. Before long supply couldn’t cope with demand and so she later opened Baston House and then further down the line West London Community College, thus creating the perfect, supportive educational
Parenting
environment for her children and plenty of others too. Starting out in its newborn days with 19 students the school now has 150 students and has established itself as the leading primary, secondary and college educational environment for those on the autistic spectrum. As the largest of its kind in Europe Hillingdon provides education and hope for those who need it. Anna’s drive and commitment to the school remains as dedicated today as it was from the start, and, as a voice for so many families and individuals affected by autism, she inspires and creates opportunities for positive change. The learning atmosphere of Hillingdon is one of activity and praise with students cared for on an individual and often oneto-one basis; the staff are the backbone of the school and whilst of course they deliver the carefully planned curriculum it
is their passion for helping each student thrive that really sets them apart from other schools. Esther Rantzen, CBE is the patron of Hillingdon, here is what she has to say on the school and Anna’s dedication; “Hillingdon Manor School is an oasis in a desert of educational provision. Its teaching staff and specialist facilities make a real difference to youngsters diagnosed with an autism spectrum condition and maximise the potential of every pupil. The school is a credit to what Anna Kennedy and her dedicated team have managed to achieve through sheer hard work, dedication and a belief that there is a better way of teaching for people with an autism spectrum condition. Its great to see happy youngsters studying and achieving great results, often after many years of despair and disappointment for them and their families. The school is a wonderful facility that is so desperately needed in our country and I am delighted to be associated with
helping children with autism achieve their full potential.” Hillingdon Manor isn’t only supportive to students, but to parents too with a network of other parents who understand and help one another. The success of each school is of course down to Anna’s initial drive and passion to create an environment in which individuals, no matter their age or background, could enjoy education delivered in a way that not only provided a happy environment but a productive one too. These schools deliver for so many individuals and in turn their families, changing their lives for the better, for good.

Harnessing the power of music -Developing young children’s brains
Professor in music education at Stringnote Academy Sylvia Corona tells us why the magical innate musical abilities of our kids should be nurtured and how we can develop their potential
Marcello Palace, Director of Stringnote Academy, has had a musical background from a young age, what did he want to achieve by creating the academy? When Marcello was young, it was just suspicion that there was a connection between music and the brain but we didn’t have any hard evidence. Modern research in neuroscience offers computer photos of the brain showing biological development when music is practiced. Marcello set up this academy to develop children’s musicality.
What is musicality? We are naturally born with the gift to be musical. Some parents find their children are so talented at a young age but as they get older they think maybe they aren’t so good, this is why early intervention is needed to hold on to children’s abilities.
significant. Traditionally, children start to learn around six or seven. Teachers prefer this age because children are more skilled and able to grasp the complexities of music, but research suggests this is a bit too late as children’s musical abilities are actually beginning to wane around that age.
How do you teach music to children?
Our method must be seen and experienced, so the parents can watch how the child reacts. We engage the children’s attention and develop the physical coordination It is no longer a debate “They learn to read of reading music and of ‘does music have music before playing the piano. They an effect on children’s learn to read music development,’ it is HOW. learning before learning to read a They can concentrate for to read a book” book and when they get longer and are able to to school, their reading understand languages age is much more advanced. There are and symbols more easily. Thus, learning many challenges at the piano. The crucial age for intervention is four to seven. After that, although children can still develop their ear, the process is much more time consuming and results are less

children for it. Stringnote’s method now provides a connection to grade one through five Mini Grades especially developed for children from age four.
What qualifications do your teachers have? They all have university degrees in music or have attended a music college.
Additionally, they have an in house training of our philosophy, our method and its impact on children.
Do you have any advice for parents? Music requires a long term commitment. For biological changes to take place there must be systematic learning for two years and they must continue with this to maintain their abilities. Singing, drumming, playing, doing and performing is the key to music, not just listening. The magical mysteries of musicality have been unravelled by trustworthy science! Images can now show the actual biological changes in the brain when a child practises playing an instrument. Stringnote Academy has based its unique teaching method on traditional and modern scientific research theories. Stringnote has developed an atmosphere that encourages kids to perform music and also enjoy it. Music is for life, not just for children. Making a smooth connection to grade one from the five mini grades at Stringnote means your child will make better and faster progress in the traditional music graded systems, fast approaching grade six, which automatically provides the first UCAS points to get them into university! Sylvia is happy to discuss Stringnote Academy’s method with you. Call her on 07946 808976 www.stringnote.com
Would you like to teach music to toddlers and young children with the Stringnote method? If you have a full DBS check and qualifications in child care you can teach level 0 and level one groups. Additionally, if you have a grade five or above in any instrument -including singing- you can also teach level 2 students. If you are a music teacher you can of course teach all levels. Stringnote provides the training and support you need and they would love to hear from you. Get in touch to become a Stringnote music teacher for children aged one to seven! Achieve 25
Martin Dalby
Martin Dalby
– For the Love of Music
Martin Dalby is one of the UK’s most prolific classical composers. WIthout doubt the work that he has created over the years has helped keep classical music alive in the 21st Century. His career is a glittering example of how music, once it’s in your veins, can be a shining light in your life. Martin told us: “The first music I ever heard was in the womb whilst my father played clarinet. I obviously can’t remember what I heard but there is no question about it, it affected me!”. So, what is the story behind this musical figure? Well, let’s start at the beginning. Born in 1942, Martin grew up surrounded by music with an organist as a father, he was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School where music was an integral part of his study and leisure time. In 1960, after being granted a Foundation Scholarship at the prestigious Royal College of London in Composition alongside composer Herbert Howells and violist Frederick Riddle. His passion for music grew as he immersed himself in the classical music world.
26
His music has allowed him to travel the world, spending two years in Italy where he played the viola in an Italian Chamber Orchestra that toured Europe and North Africa. His time in Italy was thanks to the Otavia Prize and a Sir James Caird Travelling Scholarship; a stage in his life that was wonderfully educating. When he arrived back in the UK a career in broadcasting started as Martin was appointed one of the BBC’s Music Programme music producers in 1965; a channel that would later be known as Radio 3. Making quite an impact to the station led to Martin becoming Head of Music at the BBC where he won a Sony Gold Award for producing BBC Scotland’s radio. Now, in 1972, as Head of Music for Scotland, he put into development the public profile of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Great Britain and abroad. His Sony Gold Award was won through his hugely influential and creative role producing radio channel ‘Scotland’s Music.’ The largest international Polish festival of contemporary music, the Warsaw Autumn and the Henry Wood Prom in London (aka The Proms), for which he wrote The Mary Bean, have performed Martin’s work:
success on a whole other level. After this, going back to his roots, he composed The White Maa to celebrate 200 years of Union Street in Aberdeen. Over the last 30 years Martin has also written a great deal of music for orchestras, the Church, radio, television, many songs as well as chamber music. With music being such an integral part of his life, we wondered what his thoughts were: “I consider myself very privileged to have been given the opportunity to have most of my work commissioned from many festivals including Edinburgh, Cheltenham, Cardiff, Orkney and Peterborough to name a few. I really enjoy being supportive of fellow musicians and have composed many pieces specifically for orchestras and ensembles in my career I retired in 1993 but I remain active in the world of composition and music - I couldn’t not, it runs in my veins.”

Beauty with a heart With so much in the press these days about what the right thing is to be eating, drinking with ethics in mind t it can be confusing about what to look for when purchasing anything. However, there are a couple of things to look out for to make it all a bit clearer; if it is marked organic and not tested on animals it will say on the label. Products that have been tested on animals won’t say that they have so always look for labels that specifically say that they don’t test on them. It seems shocking in this day and age that so many products are still tested on animals and in particular, beauty products often are so be sure to check your labels and the ethics behind a company before you make a purchase. By making the simple choice to look for products that are organic and not tested on animals you are making a huge impact on not only the environment but also making a stand against animal testing and products being produced which contain so many chemicals. There is a lot to be said for choosing the more natural option, whether it’s what we consume or put on our bodies and quite often by choosing right you will also be supporting the smaller, independent companies who are typically the ones creating them.
Choose organic beauty and never look back...
There has been much talk over the years on why choosing organic in our diets is better for our health and recently this focus has started to shift to the chemicals found in so many of the products we buy for our beauty regime. SLS (a foaming agent) and parabens can be found in our shower gels, shampoos, facial washes and bubble baths, and aluminium is found in nearly all of the deodorants on the high street. Chemicals are also found in our face creams and body lotions and the negative impact they could potentially have as they enter our systems is all still being heavily researched. However, what we do know is that they do enter our systems through our skin. Personally, this writer only chooses natural organic products for her household and family, and the change has been made easy with affordable and inexpensive products now on the market. Once you research the subject it’s shocking how many chemicals can be found in a majority of products advertised as being ‘natural’, ‘gentle’ and ‘pure’, and this is particularly evident in women and baby skin care. So, how do you know what you are buying is chemical free? Well, the key is to read the label before you buy; does it have the nasties listed there? Are there loads of ingredients that you have no idea what they are? Thankfully, there are some wonderful product ranges to suit a wide variant in budgets available all featuring truly natural ingredients and essential oils without the chemicals. SLSs and parabens often strip away your skin’s natural oils, leaving drier and often irritated skin and scalps behind. Organic and natural products clean and nourish without stripping these away, or leaving chemicals behind. Once you discover just how effective the natural way is you won’t go back, especially as you experience the pure fragrances and nourishing qualities found in organic, natural and handmade products. More and more visitors wanted to camp at the site on the Essex island but as Arthur aged, he was able to do less work. His eldest grandson, Ralph, came to live on the site in 1961 working on the land for two local farmers and maintaining the camp site.

New year
Be an early bird booker... After the hustle and bustle of Christmas, all the preparing and the socialising that comes with it, January can feel a little flat can’t it? Here at the Achieve offices, we start thinking about our 2016 holidays and breaks. There are lots of reasons why booking your breaks away in January for the year are a good idea, here is our guide to why being the early bird holiday booker is a smart move! Deals There are often lots of deals to be had if you book early for holidays away and here in the UK too, have a search online or visit your local travel agent to see what deals come up, if you put the effort in at booking stage you could discover real savings, and therefore have lots more spending money on your holiday. There are lots of online sites now offering comparisons for holiday breaks and if you go off season these holidays become even more bargainous! The differences between different providers are astounding sometimes so the key is to shop around. Something to look forward to Getting your holidays booked up for the year is a great way to motivate you on those days where everything seems a little serious and grey! Dreaming of those days filled with relaxation and adventure is always helpful and whether you have booked some fun in the sun or a city break in the winter months it’s a great motivator to get you through smiling. Let the kids join in with the holiday prep excitement by setting up countdown games, mark the number on a blackboard and let them cross off the days. Having a holiday to look forward to somehow also miraculously creates better behaviour we find too
The Place Where Anything is Possible! A young man diagnosed with tuberculosis gave his friend the chance to pursue his dream by giving him a roof over his head. Two-hundred years ago, William Wordsworth was able to continue with his writing thanks to Raisley Calvert and his charitable nature. With a long history and charity at the centre of their story, The Calvert Trust; set up in 1976, continues to fulfil dreams to this day.
So, whether you can afford a big holiday in the summer or a weekend away in the autumn book it and prep for it in advance, not only will you save money but it will help see you through the January blues.

The UK holiday
Family Holidays in Cornwall
for family fun
The thought of holidaying abroad with small children is not an appealing one for most of us parents, is it? Packing up the suitcases with everything you could possibly need is just the start of it, and if you have a young baby or toddler, the luggage and equipment is hefty...push chairs, sterilisers, nappies, enough clothes for the inevitable three outfit changes a day and then there are the toys/colouring/ anything to keep them happy on the plane things! Don’t even get us started with the in-flight entertainment for the kids. Obviously, it’s okay if the whole plane is full of families but if your family happens to be sitting next to the retired couple headed for a relaxing two weeks in the sun they may not be as understanding about your raucous lot on the journey out there (cue tutting and eye rolling). Then there is actually arriving at your sunny abroad destination and surviving the heat unscathed! All the parental worries when letting your children have fun in the sun come into play; ‘Will they get heat stroke?’ ,’When was the last application of sun cream?’ and ‘Have they managed to nap away from the scorching heat for a while?’ It isn’t quite the prechildren relaxing sunshine fun that you used to enjoy is it? Holidaying in the UK, however, is wonderfully relaxing compared! Sunny, but not too sunny, relaxing yet filled with activities if you want it too. We get sunshine, and just the right amount; we have plenty to do to keep the whole family amused. Whether it’s a holiday to a seaside destination, an adventure filled camping trip or a break in the countryside, there is plenty of culture, history and foods we know they like right here in the UK. You won’t have to pack everything into one suitcase and tiny hand luggage, plus it’s a lot easier on the bank balance too. Holidaying in the UK offers so much for the family without all the hassle that comes with venturing to the skies. So, for your summer holiday in 2016 consider the UK and save your stress levels, bank balance and sanity and actually enjoy a break that you fully deserve! 44

NEW YEAR
New year you!
new
With new year comes a fresh start and with it a host of promises about how we are going to reinvent ourselves to emerge in February as a healthier, fitter and happier version. Yet, all too often come mid January we have abandoned all healthy promises and slipped back into our December ways. So, what is the secret to creating a healthier you for the long term? How do you create good habits and keep them? A great place to start is with a new year detox- wipe the slate clean as it were! Give your festive season bodies a break with some kick start clean eating. Why not get a friend or partner to join in with you? The support and motivation of having someone do it with you is priceless. Make sure you research the right kind of detox for you, perhaps consult your doctor before embarking on your detox journey just to check that it wouldn't be doing more harm than good. Be realistic about your detox goals, it's one thing to promise on the first day that for the next month, you will cut out all dairy, meat, salt, sugar etc but will setting yourself unrealistic goals be setting you up for a fail? Yes, it probably will. Plus, cutting out whole food groups suddenly is probably unadvised. Allow treats and then you won't crave them, if you fall off the wagon make sure you don't fall off and keep falling, get back on track, in other words, don't feel defeated and give up completely. Accompany your detox with light exercise that you enjoy. Discover the right exercise for you; it doesn't have to be the typical path, there are plenty of ways to exercise that aren't so obvious that will work for you. For long-term health, the key is to set realistic goals by eating as fresh as possible and discovering healthy foods and exercise that you enjoy. Start small and switch things up a bit to kick start your new year a healthier, happier version of you!

New year new home Clearing away the Christmas decorations, we often get a feeling of wanting to start afresh with the house, don't you? The new year is the perfect time to give your house a spruce up, for one thing the house always manages to look a little bare without the sparkle of Christmas doesn't it? There are some great cost-effective ways to refresh your home and give it an air of positive change for the new year. Before you start ripping out kitchens, tearing down wallpaper and racking up, a huge DIY shop bill really think about how you could make changes in a cost-effective way. Make a plan, sit down and write lists, create mood boards and think carefully before you buy, after all, the best-looking rooms look good when they have been carefully planned rather than buying random things and hoping they will work together. Consider more cost effective moves there are now so many ways you can breathe new life into your kitchens and bathrooms, for example, painting the kitchen units or fitting new work tops can make a world of difference and don't cost the earth. A simple lick of paint in each room, a few brand new textiles and well placed accessories can work wonders for your home. Add some mood lighting and a few unique lamps and candles and your home is transformed on a modest budget to start the year right.

How to mix the two
The framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage is based around everything play oriented. This is because research has shown that children’s abilities thrive when learning through play. Playing helps them progress emotionally, physically, intellectually and socially. Sotiria has vetted each toy that appears on her website – and that’s a lot of toys! She makes sure quality and design meet her high standards and offer a skill that can be gained through playing with it. Developmental benefits are important when selecting which item to buy for our kids and that’s why Butterfly Occasions categorises their toys by the skills that will help our little ones to develop. It’s the easiest site to browse through as you can select by product type, skill or age. Redecorating? They do unique indoor and outdoor furniture and bedroom accessories too. Their intricately crafted, eccentric toys and furniture are something even you grown-ups will be fascinated with. Sotiria has searched the UK and beyond for things that cannot be found in any high street store! www.butterflyoccasions.co.uk 0845 468 0129 We carefully select toys and furniture from around the world to help children thrive and blossom through joyfilled play.

Happy pets make a
happy home
The family pet is as much part of the family as the rest of you and deciding to get a pet is a big decsion. What should you consider before moving in a new little friend? Whether you are considering becoming the proud owner of a dog, cat, rabbit and everything in between, one of the most important things to consider before buying is whether you have the time and money to ensure your new family pet has everything it needs for a happy life. Think about what will suit you and your family's lifestyle, for example, if you are getting a dog consider how much that particular dog needs walking, how much they eat and whether they need a lot of grooming. Then work out whether you want a specific breed from an infant or whether you want to adopt one from a rescue facility. Make sure you have everything you will need ready at home for when you welcome your new addition, things like the right bedding, food and grooming equipment as well as toys and information on how to keep your pet healthy. Research your local vet to find out the costs involved in keeping your pet healthy and consider whether you can afford them in the long-term, and don't forget to look into insurance to make sure you are covered in the event of an unexpected health bill arising. Finally, if you do decide to go for it ...enjoy your new addition! Pets are a wonderful way to teach your children a whole host of life and emotional skills, from responsibility to reward; they are a fun and lovable addition to your home.Â

goosebumps for Disney on Ice Magic
Who loves Disney? Yep, we thought so, everybody! So, when we were invited to the Birmingham Barclaycard Arena for the Disney on Ice Worlds of Enchantment show we found our nearest little person Disney fanatic and got to the front of the queue…. As we settled into our seats you could feel the excitement, everybody couldn’t wait for the show to start (including the grown ups, I might add).As the lights went down we were treated to what felt like all of our favourite Disney characters and stories ever, complete with amazing special effects, wonderful dancers and singing! We saw Lightning McQueen, Mater and the crew of Disney Pixar’s Cars perform highspeed stunts and race across the ice then we met everyone’s favourite Little Mermaid who took us under the sea oh and then we had a ball with Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie and the Toy Story gang as they tried to escape Sunnyside Daycare. Then… there was the big one; Frozen! The whole audience erupted with excitement! The set was incredible and Arendelle looked so realistic complete with fountain, castle and village as well as an impressive Ice Palace. Elsa, played by Margot Haglund, was sensational and there wasn’t a quiet child in the place, everyone was singing along. My niece is usually quite shy and dependent but every time I looked at her she was dancing around in or on her chair! She kept spontaneously clapping out of excitement and bursting out laughing at the sillier characters, climbing on my knee every now and then when someone’s head was in the way. It was like she was in a world of her own, I couldn’t recommend it enough, it was so lovely to see my niece enjoying it so much and I thought it was alright too. Just kidding, I was nearly as excited as she was belting out the songs with the rest of them! Amazing. Look out for Disney on Ice the 100 years of Magic tour coming to a town near you in 2016.

Telling Tales The intimate art-form of storytelling is an ancient tradition. Many of the stories we know today have come from the, often untraceable, experiences and tales told verbally, hundreds of years ago to small audiences
The evolution of such stories is on-going and the Society of Storytelling has made it their mission to promote the oral tradition. We love getting out our coats and scarves and fluffy jumpers from the back of the wardrobe, wrapping up for winter but no doubt by February we will be quite sick of the sniffles, wet days and goosebumps. So what better way to spend some time with the family and get out of the house by getting comfy cosy in the warmth of your local theatre, museum, school, hospital or care home for a gripping story. Hear spellbinding tales of phantoms, dragons, mermaids, Princesses, heroes and villains. That’s right! It’s National Storytelling Week from Saturday, 30th January to Saturday 6th February (not forgetting the four days before and after that are part of the festival of storytelling too). National Storytelling Week has been celebrated by all ages for 16 years. Everyone has a story to tell and a good teller will conjure up a world that can truly exist in the imagination of the listener. Go to www.sfs.org.uk/storytellers to find your nearest storytellers. Borogroves and Mome Raths -A Mysterious Tale Unravelled Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, or as he is better known, Lewis Carroll, was born on the 27th January, 1832 and with it being National Story Telling Week a few days later, we thought we’d celebrate by featuring Carroll’s famous nonsense poem, Jabberwocky. See the cogs turning as the kids try to decipher the meaning of this whimsical gibberish that has inspired so many imaginations. Jabberwocky ‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. `Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!’ He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought — So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought. And as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. `And has thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! He chortled in his joy. `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. Taken from Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, written by Lewis Carroll in 1871. Feeling confused? Carroll uses many portmanteau words; words combined with other words to make new ones. Chuckle and snort in Jabberwocky make up Carroll’s invented word, ‘chortled.’ Take a look at Lenny de Rooy’s site dedicated to the works of the late author, where you can find Martin Gardner’s translation of the poem at www.alice-in-wonderland.net

The leaders of an uplifting social movement have won the Most Trusted Social Enterprise Award presented by The Entrepreneurs Institute earlier this year Having been a social enterprise since 2010 and also a registered charity for just eight months, TheGivingMachine are thrilled to receive such an impressive prize! As the only UK charity that converts online sales commissions into free donations for schools and charities, they have been working hard to offer online shoppers more chances to give give give! “We are launching Gift Aid to give away even more,” The CEO and founder, Richard Morris Told us. “There’s a huge pile of cash just sitting there and we are here to make sure we direct it to where givers want it to go.” Almost 2000 retailers work with the programme and each one has agreed upon a commission percentage that will be donated to the customers chosen charities every time they shop online through TheGivingMachine. With true enthusiasm, Richard said: “If I gave you two per cent off of something; that’s not very inspiring, but if I said you could give two per cent to something you care about, the value of money changes.” The team have witnessed schools and charities accomplish great things with regular small amounts. Team member, Rachel Jackson loves reading thank you messages and letters saying how their platform has helped their cause.
We asked Rachel what it was like to be a part of the charity: “Working for Richard who is so motivated and passionate has rubbed off on us. It’s the satisfaction of knowing that all that money generated from the month is going to, not just one, but hundreds of causes.” There is usually an emotional link to the charities we choose to support and this festive season could see them having a great Christmas as we would wish. Free donations are sitting right under our nose waiting to be unlocked and divided between our four chosen charities that we can select from over 170,000! Online sales rose from £14.93billion in 2013 to £17.37billion in 2014 (retailresearch.org). Imagine the money that could have been accessed if all of those online shoppers had used TheGivingMachine! Richard believes that long term commerce is the key to evolving this powerful social movement. “Companies customers and communities should thrive together. We enable success to go over all three so that everyone can achieve more. “When shops get more commerce and enable free giving, their customers love them more and schools and charities can produce regular results and benefit without asking ‘can I have your cash.’”
Givenomics was written by Richard to spread the message that with a small change in behaviour, commerce can become a force of good and benefit everyone; a concept that he is eager to publicise. Celebrate their success by getting all your Christmas gear through www.TheGivingMachine.co.uk

A thank you from the Yorkshire Animal Shelter said: “We’ve been working with The Giving Machine since January 2014 and have raised over £500 so far. For a small shelter, run solely by volunteers and relying completely on public donations we’re always looking at ways of raising extra funds that don’t take up too much of our time.

Nicola, supporting William Penn School said: “The PTA at my daughter’s school joined TheGivingMachine about 8 months ago. In that time, by using TheGivingMachine to access my favourite online stores, I have managed to donate £99.74 directly to the school. This is a phenomenal amount of money from just 1 person.”
