ACI announces winners of the 2016 Airport Service Quality Awards

ACI World announces the winners of the 2016 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards. Airports large and small from around the globe demonstrate airports’ commitment to providing an excellent customer experience. “I am delighted that as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of helping airports understand how best to serve their customers with the ASQ Programme, we see our largest group of winners ever,” said Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World. “These airports have dedicated themselves to delivering a stellar customer experience. Promoting a culture of continuous service improvement has become a matter of gaining competitive advantage and optimising non-aeronautical revenue performance. ACI proudly recognizes these accomplishments and we look forward to seeking more effective, efficient and profitable ways of serving the flying public together.” ASQ is the only worldwide programme to survey passengers at the airport on their day of travel. Every year, the Programme delivers some 600,000 individual surveys in 41 languages in 84 countries. It measures passengers’ views of 34 key performance indicators, including airport access, check-in, security screening, restrooms, stores and restaurants. Each airport uses the exact same survey, creating an industry database that allows airports to compare themselves to other airports around the world. The ASQ Programme also has a feature that facilitates sharing of best practices among airport operators. 4

The ASQ Awards are presented to those airports whose customers have rated them the highest over the course of the year. The categories have been designated to recognize the achievements of airports of different sizes and in different regions. The ASQ Awards Ceremony will be held at the 27th ACI Africa/World Annual General Assembly, Conference & Exhibition in Port Louis, Mauritius, 16–18 October 2017.

Asia-Pacific and Middle East airports posted robust passenger growth in 2016 at 9%, air freight maintained strength at 4% Passenger traffic across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East delivered strong growth in December 2016: Asia-Pacific at +9.6% and Middle East at +9.4%. For the year, Asia-Pacific recorded gains at +9% and Middle East +9.4%. India continued to take the top spot in Asia-Pacific for December 2016 reporting outstanding increase in passenger traffic over the same period last year, driven by robust domestic passenger travels. Airports with the highest growth for the month: Chennai (MAA) +49.9%, Calcutta (CCU) +31.9%, Bangalore (BLR) +22.2%. In China, both international and domestic travels reported solid increase. Top runners for the month: Kunming (KMG) +15.6%, Guangzhou (CAN) +12.9% and Chengdu (CTU) +12.7%. Elsewhere in the region, Seoul Incheon (ICN) registered an increase of +13.7% in December 2016. The South Korean market appears to be recovering well from the negative impact of Middle East respiratory syndrome crisis in 2015, and also benefited from network expansion by low cost carriers. In the Middle East, passenger traffic growth sustained at a higher level in December 2016. Dubai (DXB), the largest hub in the region, received +9.3% more passengers than the same month last year. Doha (DOH) continued to generate the highest growth in the region at +15%. For the year 2016, overall passenger traffic growth in both Asia-Pacific and the Middle East remained buoyant. Domestic traffic grew at a fast pace in India, whereas air carriers in China actively pursued international expansion. Furthermore, low cost carriers spurred demands in various markets as competition with full service carriers intensifies. These factors are expected to support passenger growth into the first quarter in 2017. In terms of air freight, the overall growth trajectory continued in December 2016 in both Asia-Pacific and Middle East, recording growth at +10.9 and 10.4% respectively. For the year, Asia-Pacific grew +4.5% and Middle East grew +5.8%. The growth in Asia-Pacific, for the month of December 2016, was largely driven by increased demand for the yearend rush in perishables, electronics and e-commerce. The top three freight hubs all delivered robust increase: Hong Kong (HKG) +11.3%, Shanghai Pudong (PVG) +14.3% and Seoul Incheon (ICN) +13.8%. In the Middle East, major air freight hubs continued to report significant gains, especially in Doha (DOH) +22.6% and Dubai (DXB) +5.4%. For the year 2016, overall air freight growth in Asia-Pacific recovered steadily since June 2016 and accelerated gradually towards year end. The increase was driven mainly by international air freight demands. In the Middle East, after a slow third quarter, overall air freight growth picked up in the fourth quarter. Doha (DOH) remained the bright spot where robust monthly growth was consistently above 20% in the fourth quarter. 5

ACI attended the 11th Smart Security Management Group Meeting The Regional Office attended the 11th Smart Security Management Group (SSMG) meeting from March 1 – 2, 2017 in Narita Japan. SSMG, for the first time, was integrated as one of the working group sessions under IATA Passenger Experience Management Group Meeting. The meeting was well attended by representatives from airports, airlines, regulators, industry association, including ACI and IATA and other security service providers. Narita Airport, Singapore Changi Airport and Doha Hamad International Airport were among the ones from Asia-Pacific. A number of Smart Security Opportunity Assessments (SSOA) have been completed in Asia-Pacific airports since 6

the introduction of the ACI/IATA Smart Security initiative. Going forward, Smart Security Regional Workshop will replace SSOA with the first Smart Security Regional Workshop for the region planned to be held in the first half of 2017. Smart Security Guidance materials, including the latest version updated in February 2017, are now available on ACI World website. Should you have any questions about Smart Security Program and Regional Aviation Security Matters, please contact SL Wong, Head of Industry & Technical Affairs, ACI Asia-Pacific at sl@aci-asiapac.aero.

Sunshine Coast Airport becomes Australia’s first carbon neutral airport

Sunshine Coast Airport is the first Australian airport to achieve carbon neutrality under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program. The program recognises airports around the globe for managing their carbon emissions and reducing carbon footprints. Mayor Mark Jamieson said Sunshine Coast Airport had made the journey to the top level of the program, Level 3+ Neutrality, over the past five years with an innovative and holistic approach. “This achievement is the final step in the program and I am proud to see the airport continuing as an industry leader in reducing carbon emissions,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Their journey to carbon neutrality is testament to the airport’s complete commitment to council’s vision of being Australia’s most sustainable region - healthy, smart and creative. Becoming carbon neutral is a credit to work put in by our airport management and staff.” Sunshine Coast Airport joined the Airport Carbon Accreditation program in 2012 and set a target to become carbon neutral by 2018. In 2013, the airport achieved Level 1 Mapping, followed by Level 2 Reduction in 2014 and Level 3 Optimisation last year. Airport general manager Peter Pallot said achieving carbon neutrality was a fantastic milestone. “The team have worked incredibly hard to make Sunshine Coast Airport the most sustainable airport in the country,” Mr Pallot said. "To date our initiatives have delivered a 24% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions, 9% reduction in electricity consumption per passenger and an 11% reduction in waste to landfill per passenger.” Since mapping its carbon usage in 2013, Sunshine Coast Airport has continued to work on its carbon footprint reduction program through a series of low energy initiatives including investments in low energy lighting and air conditioning, the implementation of waste reduction, recycling programs, the use of water sensitive urban design, water usage reduction and water harvesting. 7

“We are proud to purchase Australian Gold Standard Carbon Offsets to negate our residual emissions,” Mr Pallot said. “We chose to purchase Australian Carbon Offsets to support the Australian offset market and restore native forests.” ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Director Patti Chau also recognised the commitment required in achieving Level 3+ Neutrality under the Airport Carbon Accreditation. “I would like to congratulate Sunshine Coast Airport in becoming the first carbon neutral airport in Australia!” Mrs Chau said. “Level 3+ Neutrality is the highest level of environmental achievement available to airports under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program and it is recognition of the airport's great effort in reducing and offsetting emissions. “We are proud of Sunshine Coast Airport's achievement and its commitment to sustainability which has set a good example for airports in the region. “ACI will continue to work with our airport members in their journey towards carbon neutrality which is crucial for the sustainable development of our industry.” To find out which airports are certified & their levels of certification, visit: http://www.airportcarbonaccreditation.org.
