11th ACI Airport Exchange Concluded in Muscat Oman!
The 11th ACI Airport Exchange, conference & exhibition was held from December 5 – 7 in Muscat, Oman. The event, hosted by Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC), was concluded with great success. The event, under the theme “Leading Airports towards operational excellence, profitability and customer service”, is jointly organized by ACI EUROPE, ACI Asia-Pacific and ACI World and combines an extensive airport services & equipment exhibition and four specialist conference streams addressing all aspects of airport management & operations. Sheikh Aiman bin Ahmed Al-Hosni, Chief Executive Officer of OAMC delivered a welcoming speech to welcome the delegates from across the world in attending the event.
Patti Chau, ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Director congratulated OAMC in her opening address for the exciting developments taking shape in the expected the opening of the new Muscat International Airport. She commented that airports, particularly in Asia-Pacific and Middle East, are investing in infrastructure in order to cope with the demand surge. And many governments in the region recognize that private sector participation can play an important role in 4
developing and upgrading strategic airport infrastructure and airport privatizations. She further quoted examples of ACI initiatives and what its airport members have been doing in terms of Safety, Security, Sustainability and New Technology while maintaining safe and secure airport operations. “The culmination of our efforts now is to amalgamate systems and improve operations in the most secure, effective and sustainable for the benefit of travellers. Those that are best able to do so will certainly stay ahead of their competitors.” She concluded. If you have missed out the event, check out this video produced by OAMC which captures the magic moments of the event! Oman Airports Management Company has also earned its certification for 2 of its airports under the Airport Carbon Accreditation. Certificates were presented to Muscat Airport (left), accredited at Level 2 Reduction and Salalah Airport (right), accredited at Level 1 Mapping.
2017 ACI Asia-Pacific World Business Partners (WBP) Airport Tour – Another Year of Success The 2017 ACI Asia-Pacific WBP Airport Tour was concluded with success. This year marks the seventh airport tour which was initiated in 2011. 12 delegates from 7 companies visited 3 airports in Southern China, including Hong Kong International Airport, Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport during the compact 3 days’ programme from 20 – 22 November, 2017. Each day of the tour consisted of a meeting in the morning and a site visit in the afternoon. During the meeting, the host airport was invited to deliver a presentation on their organisation and development plans followed by presentations from the WBP on their services and capabilities. The first day’s visit was with Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). The group was welcomed by Mr. Henry Ma, General Manager, Airport & Industry Collaboration who gave an overview on HKIA and the Third Runway Development Project (3RS) which includes a new Passenger Terminal, Automatic People Mover System (APM), Baggage Handling System (BHS) and expansion of Terminal 2. In the afternoon, the group had the chance to visit the Mid-field Concourse and the Integrated Airport Center. 5
On the second day the group visited Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, welcomed by Ms Hsu Yan, Shenzhen Airport Holding Co. Deputy Secretary. The representatives of the Aviation Business Department and the Airport Development Project Command Post then briefed the group on their plans of the third runway, a new satellite concourse and expansion plan to cater for more international flights. In September 2017, Asia-Pacific airports reported growth of +7.3% while the Middle Eastern airports recorded a decline of -0.8% compared to the same period last year. For the year-to-date, Asia-Pacific and Middle East grew +7.3% and +5.6% respectively. Robust domestic passenger travels continued to stimulate the Indian market with year-on-year growth consistently maintained at above 10% level. In September 2017, strong demands in both domestic and international passenger travels enabled Delhi (DEL) to register a growth of +11.3% from last year. Other top runners in the country include: Calcutta (CCU) +31.8% and Bangalore (BLR) +17%. In China, the general pace of growth continued to ease from last year. In September 2017, passenger traffic volume was largely driven by domestic traffic growth in Hanghzhou (HGH) +18.5% and Nanchang (KHN) +70.3%. Nanchang (KHN) has been experiencing significant growth since June 2017 with rapid addition in new routes and increased flight frequency. Guangzhou (CAN) +8.1% came in third in terms of volume growth for the month and continued to deliver solid increase contributed by both domestic and international passenger traffic. In the Middle East, passenger traffic showed mixed results in September. Growth in passenger traffic softened at Dubai (DXB) due to the timing of religious holidays. Doha (DOH) -18.4% continued to be negatively impacted by Qatar’s diplomatic crisis with a number of neighbouring states. Whereas Muscat (MCT) and Kuwait (KWI) recorded double-digit growth rates at +11.4% and +10.5% respectively. For the first nine months in 2017, overall passenger traffic growth in the Asia-Pacific maintained strength while the pace of growth eased in the Middle East. Domestic travels in both India and China continued to be thriving but also showing signs of moderation. In the Middle East, airports showed divergent results year-to-date, impacted by a variety of external factors. In terms of air freight, Asia-Pacific and Middle East grew +9.4% and +7.3% respectively in September. For the year-todate, Asia-Pacific and Middle East grew +9.8% and +7.7% respectively. In September 2017, exports continued to drive strong air freight growth in Asia-Pacific led by: Hong Kong (HKG) +9.1%, Shanghai Pudong (PVG) +12.3% and Seoul Incheon (ICN) +11.3%. In the Middle East, the pace of growth maintained strength, Dubai (DXB) grew by +5.8% and Doha (DOH) grew by +9.2%. Overall, air freight delivered very strong results for the first nine months of 2017. Monthly growth in both Asia-Pacific and Middle East maintained consistently between 9 to 10% in the third quarter. Among the top 10 freight airports in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East combined, half recorded double-digit growth for the year-to-date. The strong demand is expected to persist as the sector steps into the traditionally strong fourth quarter.
