ACI Asia-Pacific Presented at 2017 China Civil Aviation Development Forum Regional Director of ACI Asia-Pacific, Mrs. Patti Chau presented at the 2017 China Civil Aviation Development Forum, organized by the Civil Aviation of China (CAAC). The event was held from May 26 – 27, 2017 in Beijing, China and Mrs. Chau presented on the subject “The Economics and Benefits of Airport Networks”. Photo courtesy of CAAC News
Commenting on airport networks, Mrs. Chau said, “Airports are vital national resources. They serve a key role in transportation of people and goods and in regional, national, and international commerce. States look to their airport system to create value, through GDP growth and jobs creation. Some States opt for single-airport operators to manage these functions while others have designated one or more airport operators to manage a network of airports composed of large, medium and regional airports.” At the forum, Mrs. Chau also shared with the delegates on the global overview of the state of airport networks where she highlighted on the situation of the smaller airports within a network from ACI’s prospective. “Airport companies that manage multiple airports within a network benefit from economies of scale and scope, especially in relation to overhead costs. In many respects, they are efficiently run companies with competitive aviation charges. Airport networks benefit from economies of scales as well as easier access to capital markets, which in turn translate into lower costs as compared to single airports. 3
In many cases States are choosing to preserve the network approach, whether they remain public or are operated by private companies, for reasons of safety, socio-economic considerations, efficiency and/or as a matter of integrated transport policy. Very often operating airports as a network remains the only possible way to keep small airports viable and service their respective communities. At end of the day, airports are wealth generators for other stakeholders in the airport transport value chain and their socio-economic impact and multiplier effect extend to the broader economy. Everyone needs to do their part, that includes the appropriate policies at ICAO to ensure these benefits continue.” She concluded.
New Publication Released: ACI Asia-Pacific Green Airports Recognition 2017 Report
The Green Airports Recognition was introduced by ACI Asia-Pacific with the support of ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Environmental Committee. The Recognition’s objectives are to promote environmental best practices to minimize aviation’s impact on the environment and to recognize ACI Asia-Pacific airport members who have outstanding accomplishments in their environmental projects. For this year’s recognition, ACI Asia-Pacific received a total of 16 submissions under the theme Energy Management. These 16 airport members represent 16% of the total passenger traffic in Asia-Pacific and Middle East region and 12 of them are now currently accredited under the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. The Regional Office has consolidated the submissions into a report which is now available for download. For further information about this publication and airport environmental related matters, please contact Ken Lau, Manager, Technical & Industry Affairs at ken@aci-asiapac.aero.
ACI Releases the latest edition of the Airport Economics Report
The latest edition of the ACI Airport Economics Report confirms that the financial health of the airport industry has remained intact despite the persistence of economic woes and geopolitical risks across global markets. Revenues, costs and the resultant financial performance reflects a degree of stability over a number of years. Airports’ financials for the year 2015 were in line with growth observed in traffic volumes for the same period. While revenues and costs grew 6% and 4.3% respectively, on a per-workload-unit basis, this growth was at 0.1% and -1.7%. This testifies to the commitment of the airport industry to pursue efficient operations and sustainable infrastructure development to accommodate traffic growth. Navigating the challenge of satisfying multiple stakeholders with diverse priorities, the airport industry creates value for users and generates fair returns for investors—6.4% return on invested capital for 2015. 4
ACI Airport Economics Report provides a wide variety of indicators on economics and financial performance of the world’s airports and is essential reading for airport managers, analysts, investors and other aviation stakeholders. As in previous years, the report consists of summaries of and commentary on industry revenues (aeronautical and nonaeronautical) by source, cost (operating and capital), and evolution over time. In addition, the publication has statistical annexes of all key performance indicators. “Airports are complex businesses that operate in specific physical, cultural, socio-economic and regulatory environments,” said Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World. “They are an integral part of the dynamic air transport system and their economic sustainability requires evidence-based decision-making. ACI monitors the economic aspects of this dynamic industry that contribute to their sustainability. The ACI Airport Economics Report continues to be the international reference document for a thorough understanding of the financial health of the airport industry.” For further information about this publication and airport economics matters, please contact Suzanne Tong, Manager, Manager - Economics & Statistics at suzanne@aci-asiapac.aero.
