ACI World appoints new Chair and Vice Chair at its Annual General Assembly in Mauritius

ACI Chair Declan Collier, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), London City Airports, turned over the Chair position of the ACI World Governing Board to Bongani Maseko, CEO and Executive Director, Airports Company South Africa Limited. Martin Eurnekian, CEO, Corporación América was also appointed as Vice-Chair. The official election took place during the 27th ACI World Annual General Assembly in Port Louis, Mauritius. Their roles will become effective as of 1 January 2018. “I would like to personally thank Declan Collier for his long service to ACI,” said Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World, “previously as a Board Member and Chair in ACI Europe, and for the last ten years on the World Governing Board. Collier has been unstinting with his time and keen insight and we are fortunate to have had his guidance.” “As ACI World’s new Chair, Bongani Maseko will bring broad industry expertise and particularly a deep understanding of the challenges African airports face,” continued Angela Gittens. “We look forward to his leadership in developing key recommendations to ensure the sustainability of the industry worldwide for years to come.” “It is an honour to take on the role of Chair for ACI World,” said Bongani Maseko. “The confidence that the ACI Assembly has placed in me speaks to the role of African airports in ensuring that they are competing with the best in the world in terms of best practice on airport development, management and operations. Aviation in Africa is slowly becoming a strong contributor to global economic growth as the tourism industry grows. The next 20 years will see the most growth in passenger numbers coming from Africa. “As ACI’s newly elected Chair, I am honoured to work in collaboration with leading airport professionals on the World Governing Board so that that the voices of airports globally continue to contribute meaningfully,” Bongani Maseko concluded. “This will ensure that ACI continues to help our member airports perform well in terms of operational efficiencies—which ultimately contributes to the value chain, providing a smooth end-to-end process to a passenger’s experience.” Bongani Maseko joined Airports Company South Africa in 1999 and was formally appointed as CEO in May 2013. Prior to his role in airport operations, he also spent three-and-half-years leading O.R. Tambo International Airport as General Manager. He has a degree in Aviation Business Administration from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Airport Systems Planning and Design and Airport Ground Transportation Planning from the University of California. “I welcome Martin Eurnekian as ACI World’s new Vice-Chair,” said Angela Gittens. “He has been an active member of ACI Latin America-Caribbean for more than 10 years and President since 2016. In those years he has closely engaged with international organizations, including the International Civil Air Organization, in order to improve the sector’s safety, security and efficiency and his insights will serve the world’s airports aptly.” 5

“ACI is committed to continuing to advocate for airports so that sound operational and economic policies are promoted and embraced by all aviation stakeholders to facilitate the sustainable growth of the air transport system throughout the world,” said Martin Eurnekian. “I thank the ACI Assembly for its vote of confidence to be part of the new leadership for the next two years.” Martin Eurnekian has more than 15 years or experience in aviation. He managed several concession processes, as well as directed passenger and cargo terminal design and construction projects, including Galapagos Airport. He has also managed several airlines, including LAPA and Southernwinds in Argentina, and Volare in Italy.

ACI Releases Policy Brief on Airport Networks and the Sustainability of Small Airports

ACI World has released a Policy Brief on airport networks and the sustainability of small airports. The ACI Policy Brief focuses on one specific management model: the airport network and the sustainability of airports with low traffic volume. It provides an overview of the state of airport networks worldwide, based on a robust dataset and inventory of the world’s networks. It also puts forth practical policy recommendations to ensure that airport operation and development is sustainable and beneficial to airlines, passengers, communities and national economies The ACI Policy Brief proves that the sustainable operation and development of the world’s smaller airports remains a challenge. While the airport industry as a whole is profitable, financial statements show that as many as 66% of the world’s airports—most of which are small—operate at a net loss. The airport network model is one of the options to overcome this challenge. In order to do so, however, airport networks must continue to be able to cross-subsidize smaller airports in accordance with the ICAO framework. “Airport operators should be permitted to operate under a wide range of management models to serve their specific missions, their business needs and local circumstances,” said Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World. “When a network approach is pursued, cross-subsidies from profitable larger airports are often key to the sustainability of smaller airports, which in turn provide essential benefits in terms of safety, social and economic development, and positive externalities to airlines users of the network.” Learn more on, and/or order the Policy Brief on airport networks and the sustainability of small airports.

Global airport industry climate action surpasses 200 airports milestone • 201 airports across the world now certified at one of the 4 levels of Airport Carbon Accreditation • These airports welcomed over 2.8 billion passengers a year – that’s 39.6% of global air passengers • Latest global CO2 reduction by airport industry announced: -202,184 tonnes of CO2 • 35 airports are carbon neutral 7

At this year’s ACI World & Africa Annual General Assembly (WAGA) hosted by Airports of Mauritius Co, the global airport industry issued an update on the progress it has been making in addressing its CO2 emissions, through the independent and voluntary global certification programme, Airport Carbon Accreditation. As is customary at this time of year, ACI also released the annual report for Airport Carbon Accreditation (covering the period May 2016 to May 2017), showing how the global airport industry° is delivering on its commitment to lower its own CO2 emissions, made in 2007*. Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World commented, “This past year has seen continued engagement from airports with 36 new applications to Airport Carbon Accreditation and more airports reaching a higher level of certification within the programme. As a result, we are able to announce that we now have 201 airports participating in Airport Carbon Accreditation. These airports welcome over 39.6% of global air passenger traffic. To put that into context, that means more than 2.8 billion passengers now travel through airports certified at one of the 4 levels of the programme.” Earlier this week, Townsville Airport in Queensland, Australia became the 200th airport to enter the programme, certified at Level 1 Mapping. For all the latest key figures, including details of the accredited airports in each world region, their actions and the difference the programme is making, check out the interactive maps, case studies & programme results on www.AirportCO2.org.
