ACI World published the 2018 edition of its Annual World Airport Traffic Report (WATR) which found that global passenger and cargo growth remained resilient and robust in the face of threats from trade and political tensions around the world. All regions experienced growth with a robust year-on-year global passenger increase of 7.5% in 2017 over 2016, one of the strongest growth rates on record. Air cargo also experienced a revival across many of the world’s airports in 2017, posting a record-breaking jump of 7.7% from the previous year. Likewise, aircraft movements increased by 3% in 2017, the highest annual percentage growth increase since 2004. All told, the world’s airports accommodated 8,277,676,508 passengers, 118,612,750 metric tonnes of cargo, and 95,772,011 aircraft movements. Aviation’s centre of gravity continued to shift eastward in 2017. Most of the world’s fastest-growing large airports are located in emerging markets; 16 of the fastest-growing top 30 airports with over 15 million passengers are located in just two countries, China and India. ACI Asia-Pacific Continues to Spread its Presence by Speaking at Key Industry Events

ACI Asia-Pacific had multiple opportunities this September to promote the work of ACI and make known its unique positioning in aviation as the voice of the region’s airports. The Regional Office was invited to speak at the ICAO Air Cargo Development Forum on 5 – 7 September in Zhengzhou, China. The forum brought together international experts to discuss and address key issues, including the growth and liberalization of air cargo and e-commerce. Participants were able to deliberate and propose solutions addressing regulatory and operational challenges that would maximize the benefits of the industry for States and stakeholders. Speaking at the event, Regional Director Patti Chau highlighted that air cargo is known for its reliability and timely delivery. To ensure that the industry is operating at optimum levels, it is essential that air cargo processes, procedures and standards are aligned with current demands and technologies. ACI applauds ICAO for providing this platform for the industry to address such important issues surrounding the modernization of the air cargo regulatory framework.

The following week, the Regional Office was invited to the 2nd China Airport Development Forum in Changsha, China, on 12-13 September. The event was co-hosted by the People’s Government of Changsha City, China Civil Airports Association and IATA. Attended by close to 200 delegates comprising mostly senior airport executives in China, the event was opened by Dr. Dong Zhi-Yi, Deputy Administrator of the Civil Aviation Administration of China and Mr. Chen Fei, Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Hunan Province. Deputy Regional Director Ada Tse shared on the topic of “International Airport Development and Policy Trend”. Delegates were presented with current traffic statistics, forecasts and highlights of a few upcoming airport development projects in the region. Opportunity was also taken to convey ACI’s position on airport privatization and introduce the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme as a means to ensure that sustainability is addressed during the journey to enhance capacity. Other speakers included Mr. Zhang Baojian, IATA Regional Vice President for North Asia; Sir Peter Budd, UK Department of International Trade; Ms. Wang Rui-ping, Chair of the China Civil Airports Association; Mr. Li Jun, Board Chairman of the China Air Transport Association and other subject matter experts in the industry and academia in China.

Lastly, the Regional Office accepted an invitation from the government of Uzbekistan and IATA to speak at an international conference “Central Asia – In the System of International Transport Corridors in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 20-21 September. There, the Regional Director shared key messages with the Central Asian aviation community, emphasizing aviation as a sector of strategic importance, the need to implement smarter regulation and development of masterplans to address long-term infrastructure needs. Governments were encouraged to consider removing or reducing financial barriers that would hinder the development of air connectivity and adopting international best practices to manage short-term infrastructure constraints.

Central Asia is strategically located along China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which will no doubt reshape global trade and impact the region’s development. Central Asia airports are encouraged to join ACI and make use of the platform to interact and exchange with other airports to foster and facilitate growth.

World’s Top Performing Airports Celebrated at ACI Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards Ceremony The airport industry’s commitment to customer experience was celebrated at ACI’s annual Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards Ceremony. The awards ceremony was held on September 12, during the inaugural ACI Customer Excellence Global Summit, in Halifax, Canada, an appropriate setting for recognising the top performers in customer service according to passengers. The ASQ programme is world-renowned and the only globally-established benchmarking programme measuring passengers’ satisfaction while they are travelling through an airport. “The ASQ Awards Ceremony celebrates our industry’s commitment to delivering exceptional customer service to passenger service”, said Angela Gittens, Director General of ACI World. “The awards ceremony and the Global Summit are special opportunities for the airport community to network, exchange best practices and celebrate the devotion to our customers. I congratulate all the winners for their accomplishment and for serving as role models in pursuing customer service excellence.” The awards honoured the achievements of airports in 2017 and included 15 first-time winner airports. These results confirm that competition is now a fixed feature of the industry. Airports, regardless of size, operate in an increasingly commercial and competitive business environment that encourages them to make the passenger experience a top priority.
