It is often said flying is already the safest mode of transport but that shouldn’t stop us from seeking further improvements because every single human life counts. The old adage “you can’t manage what you can’t measure” unsurprisingly applies to airport safety too. In aviation, data driven methodology is widely recognized as an important element of a broader strategy to make flying even safer. However airports have frankly been lagging on safety data collection for various reasons: lack of motivation on the part of witnesses, fear for negative publicity and punitive measures, and it is often simply too easy to get away with not reporting. An international group of enthusiastic airport safety managers have been doing a “ring-fenced” data sharing amongst themselves in the last two years. Now this group, the ACI Asia Pacific Regional Operational Safety Committee, is calling upon their fellow safety managers in the region to join them in this meaningful cause. If your airport also collects data on runway, apron, taxiway and wildlife strikes, we encourage you to complete this online form, downloadable here, and return it to the Regional Office by 14 September 2018 at gary@aciasiapac.aero. Participants will be given a summary of the data collected in due course.
