Feature Stories

April 2017: Passengers up 8% and 13% respectively in Asia-Pacific and Middle East Passengers traveling through the Asia-Pacific and Middle Eastern airports in April 2017 grew by +7.6% and +13% respectively compared to the same period last year1. In China, Beijing (PEK) experienced a decline in passenger traffic of -8% in April due to the scheduled closure of a runway for maintenance. The two airports adjacent to the Beijing area benefited with substantial gains: Tianjin (TSN) +23.9% and Shijiazhuang (SJW) +27% likely as a result of the coordinated development approach adopted by the Government in the region. In India, while the overall pace of increase in domestic passenger traffic continued to moderate, it is still driving outstanding growth in April for a number of small to medium-sized airports, possibly reflecting progress made by the Government’s policy to strengthen regional connectivity: Guwahati (GAU) +43.2%, Calcutta (CCU) +30.4% and Goa (GOI) +23.3%. Elsewhere in Asia-Pacific, the South-East Asian region reported solid overall growth in April 2017 driven by vacation travels during Easter and the recovery of the Malaysian and Indonesian markets: Kuala Lumpur (KUL) +20.2% and Jakarta (CGK) +10.1%. In the Middle East, passenger traffic continued to grow in April 2017. Dubai (DXB), the region’s largest hub grew by +9.2% and a number of airports also generated significant increase: Madinah (MED) +25.1%, Beirut (BEY) +29.3%, Muscat (MCT) +19%. The adverse impact on traffic from the ban on personal electronic devices will likely be seen in the coming months. In terms of air freight, Asia-Pacific grew +8.8% while the Middle East grew +4.6%. The top three freight hubs: Hong Kong (HKG) +8.9%, Shanghai Pudong (PVG) +14.1% and Seoul Incheon (ICN) +11% delivered strong increase in April 2017. On the other hand, growth of air freight in the Middle East eased from last month. The largest hub in the region, Dubai 3

(DXB) grew by +1.9%. Doha (DOH) was the exception, delivering growth of +16.3% for the month. TABLE 1: Preliminary year-on-year traffic growth rates for Airports reporting highest traffic volume in the respective size category in April 2017 2

They represent approximately 60% of total passenger traffic and 70% of total freight traffic worldwide. Commentary, tables and charts are based on preliminary data submitted by participating airports and are therefore subject to change.

ACI Regional Committee Publishes Guidance on Safety Promotion

Safety promotion is a major component of Safety Management System (SMS). The use of promotional materials, including posters, graphics and slogans, is often regarded as a cost-effective means to enhance safety awareness. To assist airports to design safety promotional materials, the ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Operational Safety Committee (ROSC) has compiled the “ACI Reference Book on Safety Promotional Materials”, a collection of materials used at the airports of the ROSC members. 4

The promotional materials in the reference book are grouped into seven areas - apron safety, airside driving, foreign object debris (FOD) prevention, runway safety, wildlife hazard management, safety culture and incident reporting and occupational health and safety. The reference book is now available for download on the ACI Asia-Pacific website. For enquiries on the reference book or other safety-related matters, please contact SL Wong, Head of Technical and Industry Affairs at sl@aci-asiapac.aero.
