ACI Safety Team Visits Bahrain A team of ACI safety experts visited Bahrain International Airport from 28 February to 3 March 2016. The purpose of the visit was to do an onsite safety review of the runway safety, aerodrome certification, wildlife hazard management, markings, signs and lighting, rescue and firefighting, obstacle management, maintenance of airfield facilities, training programme and training records and operational procedures of the airport. ACI was very impressed with a dedicated, experienced and knowledgeable Bahraini operations team and the well maintained facilities and equipment there. The newly written Safety Management System manual, essential for the systemic management of safety risks at the airport, has all the necessary elements of a recommended example. During the discussions with the Bahraini team, a number of possible enhancements to safety were identified and both sides happily agreed that these should be implemented at the airport and perhaps could be of useful too at others.

The safety review is a free-of-charge service ACI provide to its members under the APEX in Safety Review program. The safety review team consists of airfield safety and operations managers drafted on a voluntary basis from other airports who, with a fresh pair of eyes, can often pinpoint issues that have become “part-of-the-furniture” for local operations people. Results of the safety review are kept strictly confidential and are only available to the client airport. ACI would like to take this opportunity to thank Bahrain Airport Company for their participation and applaud them for their openness in inviting fellow airports to review their safety situation. The good learning and safety cultures there are exemplary to other airports. ACI is also grateful to all the safety assessors who took a week from their busy schedule to work voluntarily at Bahrain and to contribute to this meaningful cause of helping others in improving safety. These truly altruistic safety heroes are Ashraf Ahmed Abu-Eshey (Saudi Arabia), Bandar Sayyad (Saudi Arabia), Dirk Geukens (Brussels), Haydn Beynon (Dubai), Ian Devine (Dublin), Michael Moschopoulos (Athens) and Ozan Karakış (Tibah, Medina).

ACI Asia-Pacific Supports the Youth Development in Advancing the Aviation Industry Aviation has always been appealing to the general public including a growing number of young students in Asia who want to be part of this fascinating industry. On 4 March 2016, ACI Asia-Pacific delivered a training session to a class of 30 students from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on Air Transport Economics, led by Dr. Achim Czerny, in support of the region’s aviation, a fast growing business driven by the strong economic development in many countries in the region. The training, conducted by SL Wong, Head - Technical & Industry Affairs covered competition between airports, determinant factors of competition, forms of economic regulation for airports, airport concessions, and airport capacity planning and management. ACI believes in the importance of youth development in advancing the aviation industry and was pleased to see there was strong interest amongst the students in the topics and there was no hesitation in asking questions. This collaboration between ACI Asia-Pacific and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is part of the regional office’s effort in supporting the development of future generation of aviation professionals. Dr. Czerny said “University students sometimes express their concern about boring lectures in school and a lack of practically relevant class lessons. Remember our time as a student; we all had similar concerns. The students really appreciated this opportunity to visit ACI Asia-Pacific to learn new insights about the strong future growth of the industry, the trend of airport competition, privatization, and regulation among other topics from highly experienced and knowledgeable experts in the field. I wish to thank ACI AsiaPacific for their practitioner’s knowledge sharing with the students to enrich their learning
