Feature Stories Passenger traffic in Asia-Pacific and Middle East grew around 8% in August 2016
Second Vice President PS Nair
In August 2016, Asia-Pacific and Middle East delivered passenger traffic increase at +7.5% and +8.1% respectively in the midst of an overall easing in growth momentum globally. In Asia-Pacific, South Korean airports appear to have recovered fully from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in 2015. Many airports reported robust growth for the month led by: Seoul Incheon (ICN) +22.5%, Busan (PUS) +17.8%, Jeju (CJU) +12.3%. Domestic passenger travels continued to stimulate growth in India. Many airports reported growth in excess of 20% in August 2016. Top runners include: Ahmedabad (AMD) +26.2%, Goa (GOI) +25.6% and Hyderabad (HYD) +25.2%.
Secretary Treasurer Emmanuel Menanteau
In China and Japan, growth in the current month was largely driven by gains in international passengers. Kunming (KMG) led growth in China at +11.7% and Naha (OKA) led in Japan at +11.5% in terms of total passenger traffic. Both airports recorded substantial international passenger growth of +21.7%. In the Middle East, Muscat (MCT) and Doha (DOH) were in leading positions reporting passenger traffic gains at +18% and +17.4% respectively for the month. Regarding air freight, despite global trade growth remaining sluggish, in August 2016 Asia-Pacific and Middle East generated increase at +4.5% and +3.5% respectively. Top freight hubs in Asia-Pacific delivered solid increase for the month: Hong Kong (HKG) +3.5%, Shanghai Pudong (PVG) +2.6% and Incheon (ICN) +3.2%. Shenzhen (SZX) +13.11% generated the highest growth in the region. The result in the Middle East was mixed, air freight volumes at the largest hub Dubai (DXB) shrank -3% for the month while Doha (DOH) continued to expand at a fast pace at +20.2%.
Immediate Past President Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid
Note : 1. ACI preliminary passenger and freight statistics are based on a significant sample of airports that provide regular monthly reports to ACI. They represent approximately 60% of total passenger traffic and 70% of total freight traffic worldwide. Commentary, tables and charts are based on preliminary data submitted by participating airports and are therefore subject to change. 2. Size categories refer to the annual passenger traffic (in the last 12 months) >> Back to Top
APEX in Security Pilots Successfully Conducted in Indonesia Following the successful Airport Excellence (APEX) in Security pilot review at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius in April 2016, ACI conducted two more pilot reviews in Indonesia from 31 October to 11 Nov 2016 at Denpasar, Bali (31 October to 4 Nov 2016) and Balikpapan (7 to 11 Nov 2016) airports. The APEX in Security programme is a peer review process that offers advice on best practice and identification of areas for improvement. The ultimate aim of the programme is to promote more secure airport operations worldwide. These pilots will enable the fine tuning of the programme for future security reviews at airports around the world. APEX in Security runs on similar lines to the popular APEX in Safety programme, now in its 5th year. It uses international standards and recommended practices, supplemented by implementation guidelines as its base, and supplements this with the expert views of seasoned practitioners from similar size airports around the world. Similar to APEX in Safety, APEX in Security has also received strong support from ICAO. An MoU between ACI and ICAO was signed in February 2016 which helps ACI and ICAO to work together to deliver security reviews, offer technical assistance, develop programmes for airport personnel training and enhance regional partnerships. The APEX reviews in Indonesia were conducted by a review team comprises representatives from ACI, Dublin Airport Authority International, Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Budapest Airport, Aeroport de Montreal and host of the last pilot trial, Airports of Mauritius Co. Ltd.
Regional Director Patti Chau

ACI Asia-Pacific Green Airports Recognition 2017 – Calling for Participation ACI Asia-Pacific is pleased to announce the “Green Airports Recognition 2017” is now open for application. The objective of the Green Airports Recognition is to promote environmental best practices to minimize aviation’s impact on the environment and to recognize ACI Asia-Pacific airports members who have outstanding accomplishments in their environmental projects.
By participating in this initiative, you have the opportunity to share your airports’ environmental projects with the other airports in the region and also have the chance to be recognized for your airports’ outstanding achievements. Understanding that different airports have different environmental priorities, each year, there will be a specific environmental aspect to be chosen as theme of Recognition. This year it is Energy Management. To promote environmental best practices sharing, one of the eligibility requirements is to complete the ACI Asia-Pacific Environmental Survey 2015. Please give the program your widest promulgation and encourage your energy and
environment team to submit their project by 16 January 2017, 12:00 noon, Hong Kong Time (GMT + 8 hours). Should you have any questions about the program, please feel free to contact Ken Lau, Manager, Technical & Industry Affairs at green_airports@aci-asiapac.aero.
New ACI Airport IT Security Benchmarking Tool
With the increased use and presence of technology within our industry, cybersecurity has become a key priority for all airports. ACI World Airport IT Standing Committee took the lead to develop an Airport IT Security Benchmarking Tool. This new tool offers airports the possibility to compare themselves with others in terms of their level of IT protection, a way to prioritise improvement initiatives and is based on the most recent ISO security standard. The tool offers two main features: Risk assessment • The assessment consists of 106 questions which covers different control areas. • Once an assessment is completed by an airport, the IT Security Benchmarking Tool will provide a summary score for each of control areas, plus an over-all score for the airport. Benchmarking • The concept behind the benchmarking tool is to be able to compare an airport assessment to any other airport in the system or a set of airports filtered by region, country and demographic categories. The benchmarking tool could be run against all airports or specific airports. Useful facts about the IT Security Benchmarking tool : •
Number of questions: Contains 106 questions.
•
ISO 27002 version: Based on the most recent version of the 27002 ISO security standards.
•
Security features: The entire database collected is kept confidential and encrypted for security reasons.
Any airport can join free of charge for the rest of the year 2016. Commencing 2017, the annual cost will be US$12,000, but ACI will offer a 50% discount for 2017 to all airports signing before the end of 2016.
