Feature Stories ACI Asia-Pacific airports reported passenger growth in February 2015
9.7%
Impacted by seasonal passenger traffic surge during Lunar New Year, Asia-Pacific airports reported growth of +9.7% while the Middle Eastern airports recorded increase of +7.0% in February 2015. In Asia-Pacific, many airports posted double-digit growth for the month. The Lunar New Year holiday period significantly boosted international passenger traffic: Tokyo Haneda (HND) recorded an outstanding +51.1% increase in international passenger followed by Shanghai Pudong (PVG) +28.9%. Bangalore (BLR) grew at +29.6% in overall passenger traffic for the month and is likely to surpass 15 million1 by the end of 2015. The growth of Middle East airports were led by: Abu Dhabi (AUH) +21.5% and Doha (DOH) +15.6%. In February, air freight statistics showed large increase for the Asia-Pacific +14.3% and the Middle East +12.3%. Many airports in Asia-Pacific reported significant growth for the month. These increases were primarily driven by strong boost leading up to the Lunar New Year holiday; and the modal shift to air transport by retailers and manufacturers due to congestion at major seaports along the west coast of the United States. Shanghai (PVG) led Asia-Pacific with the highest growth rate +23.6% whereas Dubai (aggregate DXB & DWC2) led the Middle East at +37.8%. For the year to date, passenger traffic in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East recorded a year-on-year increase of +7.0% and +9.2% respectively. Freight volume grew +8.5% in Asia-Pacific and +10.9% in the Middle East. Details of the press release please click here. >> Back to Top

Technical Brief Strengthening Industry Partnerships to Eliminate the Risk of Facilitating Wildlife Trafficking
TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, in collaboration with the World Customs Organization (WCO), convened the first international consultative workshop in January 2015 in Bangkok bringing together representatives from key logistics companies, airlines, couriers and transport associations, Customs officials, supply chain experts and wildlife professionals to collaboratively find practical solutions to deter wildlife smuggling activities. The two-day workshop in one of Southeast Asia’s most significant wildlife trade hubs was done under the auspices of the Wildlife Trafficking Response, Assessment and Priority Setting (Wildlife TRAPS) project funded by the USAID targeting the movement of illicit wildlife cargoes across borders. The workshop report highlights the key outcomes of the discussions and recommendations for the way forward. It can be downloaded at: http://www.traffic.org/home/2015/2/11/combating-the-weakest-linkstargeting-solutions-in-the-trans.html “The transportation and logistics sector has a role to play in countering the illegal trade in wild animals and plants. It’s well known that wildlife traffickers rely heavily on logistics, land, air and sea carriers to smuggle illicit commodities with increasing frequency from Africa to supply the growing demand in some Asian countries. The sector, including operators at air and sea ports can therefore help strengthening key risk points along supply chains by adoption of best corporate practices, capacity building and enhanced information sharing with relevant law enforcement agencies”, said the spokesperson of TRAFFIC. TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of IUCN and WWF. WCO, the World Customs Organization, represents 179 Customs administrations around the world and is the steward of international Customs standards and the central forum for co-operation and dialogue on Customs matters. WCO has long been active in the fight against illegal wildlife trade and in raising awareness of this issue amongst all relevant stakeholders. >> Back to Top
