PLAZA Y MERCADO SUSTENTABLE CASABLANCA // MARRUECOS
The proposal is based on two main ideas, urban collective space and nomad commerce at the desert. We develop the projectin two ways: 1) functional analysis of markets -the act of buying and selling- and 2) morphological analysis of the site while ex perimenting with different volumetric proposals. We conclude that the usual process of trade in markets work as follows: INTERACTION - TRANSACTION - EXHIBITION WALKING – SUPPLY, so our proposal is an itinerant path that could generate different types of interaction / transaction. This route is defined by each buyer, which defines its own order and it develops into a long process of interaction, human relations and economic exchanges. We also noticed that there is a very thin line between markets and public space, as far as the market has exceeded its established boundaries and jumped into the streets; perhaps because of a higher level of attraction or maybe because of finding its own nature in the path. We therefore propose two types of market, an underground market and a fixed market at street-level that explore the boundary between the formal and the informal. Underground market: We propose an enclosed space with an atmosphere of mysticism that evokes the streets of old town street commerce and informal street markets. A stage for the mise en scene of the object; getting a product and displaying it. Through a structure of arches and vaults the plaza is supported while the same structure creates a space that has bays which contain groups of tents made of solid wood. The plaza: we propose an artificial forest created by concrete columns with ceramic / clay which support the cover. The square has a double role, collective space and market. The market has removable stores/tents remaining to those used in deserts. The collective space is a multipurpose area that could have a 360º stage supported by the structure of the roof. This space is open to the public and is intended to serve as a meeting and contact space. Cover: we developed a two-dimensional geometric element - Tessellation -, which can provide protection to the users fromweather elements like rain or sun. While repeating it this element would work as a screen. By using this geometry, we develo ped a three-dimensional object that is an analogy of the street market covers. The structure is made of steel frames supportedby concrete columns. Over these frames we propose a three-dimensional structure made of two color canvas with a metal ske leton.
