CLEMENT & LISE NEW FOR OLD Taking a traditional look and give it a contemporary twist This is exactly what Clément & Lise has done, giving new life to traditional French design. Founded in 2007, it has sought to combine the traditional skills of cabinet makers with up to date design and patina. It has employed a collection of female designers with the specific aim of appealing to women, especially those keen on having something a bit different in their home ‘Based on French historical references, the style has clearly been revisited to make it trendier. Each model is thought as a jewel that is intended to be a masterpiece of home decoration,’ says the company. Special care is given to each product in terms of design, patina and functions. Designed and finished in France, the models are made in Europe mostly in

solid cherry and beech. Focusing on creation and technological innovation, new models are introduced on a regular basis, mainly at major furniture trade exhibitions.
Clément & Lise has taken part in Maison & Objet in September and Meuble Paris in January. Within the next few years it also hopes to exhibit at major international furniture fairs over the world. The company says its designs – aimed at the upper end of the market – are suitable for both traditional and contemporary homes, with one, or perhaps two pieces, being used as the centrepiece of the room. Thanks to the success of the range, Clément & Lise is a fast growing brand. Already present in the US, Russia, Dubai and most continental European countries, Clément & Lise has set its sights on the UK, where it is confident its target end consumer has been unaffected by the recession. It hopes to supply one major retailer in every large UK town.

LABARERE MODERNISM Since 1870, the family owned company has been making furniture Since its launch almost 140 years ago Labarere has specialized in making furniture for the home. Today it offers a wide variety of products across 13 ranges. Among the latest, is Heritage. This solid range covers the dining room, bedroom as well as a large occasional offering. Marie Antoinette is a Louis XV & Louis XVI period inspired collection offering a choice of lacquered fronts in an antique wood finish or bright colours with solid tops and drawers. Pieces include nine drawer commodes, coffee tables, two-door drinks cabinet, desk, consol table, buffet and dressing tables.
Les Parisiennes takes a more cheeky approach with several chests of drawers clearly influenced by the flowing curves of Folie Bergere skirts. The collection was one of the ranges on show at Meuble Paris last month, drawing admiring looks from visitors for its freshness. Maintenon is more classically French in style, covering dining room, display cabinets and occassional pieces. It has a choice of antiqued finishes. The company has been working with well-known designers for a number of years and today Jean-Claude and his wife Muriel Labarere continue the adventure
of juggling between tradition and modernism. All the current collections are a reflection of the soul of the family, whose history is so intertwined with the making of furniture. The furniture inspired by the styles of Louis XV and Louis XVI is the essence of French charm and has a loyal customer following. The styles are enhanced through close collaboration with designers such as Didier Versavel and Philippe Di Meo. The company’s strength lies in its choice of finishes, with more than 20 available.
Labarere has been working with renowned designers for a number of years. The focus of the latest collection ‘ Les Parisiennes’ by Didier Versavel is modernity and femininity. Such collaborations allows Labarere to expand its horizons by combining tradition with modernity.

GEM UNITED GEM, a group of French furniture exporters, supports companies in their moves to expand internationally GEM is a specialist organisation, formed at the initiative of the National Union of French Furniture Industries (UNIFA) and a partner of CODIFA (the Committee for the Development of the French Furniture Industry). Its role is to inform and promote awareness among all the sector’s players. It also acts as spokesperson and ambassador for the French furniture industry outside France. GEM supports the development of its member companies in international markets by co-financing and organising group projects. Its activities revolve around three main focuses: • Reinforcing the representation of French manufacturers at international events; • creating and co-ordinating companies’ commercial activities and • centralising and meeting the need for information regarding international markets. By its nature, objectives and the structure of the French furniture industry, GEM provides advice and guidance to all types of company, regardless of their size and product range, their market niche or level of expertise in the field of exports. GEM currently comprises 110 French companies. These companies are representative of the sector as a whole, although the domestic market provides the largest number of members. These 110 companies generate a third of the turnover of furniture production in France. Craftsman and industrial leaders alike are welcomed by GEM.
Developing the sector In order to optimise the presence of its member companies at trade exhibitions abroad, GEM offers a series of operations tailor-made to meet the needs of each company: • Identifying and cataloguing events

Enhancing export skills In partnership with the public assistance network, GEM coordinates employment under the Voluntary International Business Placements scheme (VIE) on behalf of its members, particularly SMEs. The principle is to to identify specific export requirements and to unite two or three companies in a joint employment project.

Organising assignments On behalf of its members, GEM organises assignments abroad with the aim of creating export opportunities and/or developing an international presence. GEM proposes the grouping together of companies with similar or complementary commercial interests in terms of market or country on a shared assignment. However, meetings with
A key event for the profession, the Meuble Paris exhibition was held from 22-26 January 2009 at the Paris Le Bourget exhibition centre. Sharing the same organiser, the trade show was held at the same time as the Maison et Objet show (23-27 January). On this occasion, GEM made a key contribution to the international aspect of this event. GEM’s role at the Meuble Paris show was to: • on behalf of its members, to manage the arrival and reception of their international customers and prospects at the show and to welcome foreign delegations - and any other sector professionals wishing to make contact with a French company - to its stand and guide them around the show. GEM skilfully fulfilled this dual role, which guarantees a high-quality reception and permanent representation for the French furniture industry both for member companies and their guests.
