How to Hire a Contractor
by Gwen Biasi, director of marketing and communications for the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Choosing your remodeling contractor is the most important decision you’ll make when undertaking a remodeling project. Take your time and be thorough in your search. Here are some suggestions for choosing the “right” remodeler. Since nearly half of all projects signed by a contractor are the result of client referrals, and an additional 22 percent of jobs are the result of word of mouth, ask relatives, neighbors and business colleagues if they can recommend someone. Another good option is to visit the Web sites of professional associations, such as the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), www.remodeltoday.com, and search for certified remodelers in your area. Next, look for a company with an established business history in your community. Surviving in any business in today’s competitive marketplace is a difficult task, and successful contractors are proud of their history in the industry. As part of this step, check with the Better Business Bureau in your area as well. Make sure to ask for copies of the insurance certificates to verify coverage, both liability and worker’s compensation. In addition, some states require licensing and registration. If your state does have construction licensing laws, ask for your contractor’s registration and license, then confirm the license number and expiration date with your local jurisdiction.
Also ask if any of the company’s employees are certified. Trade certifications are good indicators of dedication, professionalism and knowledge of the industry. Remodelers are required to meet certain industry criteria to maintain their certifications. Finally, request a list of references for projects the company has completed, especially those similar in relation to the one you are considering. The contractor should be able to supply you with a minimum of three references, including names, telephone numbers and addresses. Make sure the list includes current project references as well as references from a year ago so you can see how the work has stood up and if the remodeler supported the work if there was a problem. As a follow-up to this question, ask if the contractor can arrange a visit to see a finished job. You also should ask for professional references from suppliers or subcontractors to verify sound business practices. You can increase your chances of success by conducting qualifying interviews, and following up on references and credentials. You need to look for the person you feel will provide the best all-around service available, above and beyond the necessary remodeling skills. Remodeling can be a rewarding experience with the right partner. You can create your dream room or home, and learn a little about design and remodeling along the way.
Choosing your remodeling contractor is the most important decision you’ll make when undertaking a remodeling project. Take your time and be thorough in your search.
