2011 Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring and ICU EEG Monitoring Courses Saturday, September 17 & Sunday, September 18, 2011 Sheraton Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia Accreditation: The American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Target Audience: Clinical neurophysiologists, neurologists, physiatrists, neurosurgeons, technologists, trainees in these disciplines and other physicians and researchers who utilize clinical neurophysiological techniques and knowledge in their practice. NIOM Course Objectives: (1) To present a review of the various neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring (NIOM) techniques; (2) To enhance interpretive abilities with case based teaching, and (3) To provide a review of the contemporary issues relevant to NIOM including legal, practice, and equipment issues. The American Clinical Neurophysiology Society designated this live activity for a maximum of 14.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. ICU EEG Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: (1) recognize common indications for CEEG in the ICU setting, (2) interpret EEG patterns encountered in the ICU, including seizures and periodic patterns, (3) utilize quantitative EEG methods for data reduction and real-time detection of EEG changes in the ICU, (4) select appropriate equipment for ICU-EEG monitoring, including networking and data storage options, and (5) determine optimal staffing, data review, and reporting of results. Professional Practice Gaps: Under the system of accreditation designed by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the purpose of CME is to improve physician competence, physician performance, or patient outcomes. This is accomplished by identifying gaps in physicians’ competence, skills, or performance, and offering medical education to overcome those gaps. The following professional practice gap was identified by a combined effort of the ACNS's Program, Course and Continuing Medical Education Committees. This program is designed to address the following professional practice gap: Emerging Areas of Practice. Neurological intraoperative monitoring (NIOM) and intensive care unit EEG monitoring (ICU EEG) are new and rapidly evolving areas of clinical neurophysiology. Few practicing neurologists have adequate training in these techniques, and physicians with competence in these areas are in great demand. Educational activities should cover both basic methodologies for those practitioners new to ICU EEG and NIOM, and innovative techniques.
