TREGLOS, TREVOSE AND CONSTANTINE BAY Treglos is not just about the beauty of Constantine Bay, the quiet rural village also has a convenience store and surf shop. It is also home to Trevose Golf and Country Club, with its Championship, Headland and Short courses suitable for all ages and abilities, stretching from the village to the Bay and onwards towards Trevose Head providing dramatic sea views all around the course. Trevose head with its distinctive lighthouse is a reminder of the rugged shore and the full expanse of the coastline is visible from this stunning vantage point: from St Ives in the South to Hartland Point in the North.

The Bay has a reputation as one of the best surfing spots in Cornwall, for experts and novices alike, and the soft golden sands are bordered by dunes and rocky reefs, revealing numerous rock pools to explore. Indulge yourself at the many other small bays and coves along this glorious stretch of the North Cornish coast, whether you are walking along the coast path or taking to two wheels or four.

PADSTOW, NEWQUAY AND THE WIDER AREA Treglos is situated at the mid point of the North Cornwall Atlantic coast, which stretches for more than 40 miles with its landscape of rocky cliffs and rolling hills, dotted with beaches and coves. Treyarnon Bay is a lovely family beach just a short walk from Constantine Bay, with its own natural “swimming pool” within the rocks. The nearest main town is Padstow, just under 4 miles away. The historic fishing port is a popular foodie destination, with a choice of Michelin eateries amongst the varied dining and shopping experiences throughout the town. The exclusive village of Rock, with it’s long fine sandy beach is a short ferry ride from Padstow.

Follow the river along the Camel Trail from Padstow towards Wadebridge, Bodmin and beyond, providing excellent nature trails and cycle paths, ideal for all ages and abilities to enjoy the beautiful Cornish countryside. Only 11 miles to the south is the larger popular seaside resort of Newquay, providing excellent Championship surfing at Fistral Beach. The rugged coastline and inland moors have inspired novelists such as Daphne du Maurier and Winston Graham, and there is so much more to explore throughout the wider county including the Tate Gallery in St Ives, the Eden Project and the Arthurian legends of the North Cornwall coast.

OUR VISION The architectural vision for the project was to design a scheme that sought to build upon and enhance the distinctive place defining characteristics of Constantine Bay. These included integrating the site layout into the unique village grain defined by Cornish hedges and rural tracks, whilst framing the vistas of local landmarks like Dinas Head and the Quies. We have embraced all opportunities to take in the stunning views of the blue ocean horizons and rural green landscapes of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Landscaped into a series of tiers, the site accommodates a selection of single and two storey detached houses. Entrances and parking to these are all from the east enabling living rooms and the main bedrooms to enjoy wonderful coastal views of Constantine Bay and the setting sun beyond. The detached houses have subtle variations in form and materiality sitting over the native duned landscape of Constantine Bay with some blending into it via their native planted green roofs.

Situated at the top of the site, the apartments offer commanding views over the Bay from an articulated façade of dormers, balconies and covered garden porticos, each providing a different and unique outlook. Furthermore, the overall building form is articulated into three distinct volumes via vertical glazed stair cores and stepped laterally across the site hiding much of the building’s mass from the north and south elevations. Distinct metal roof forms define each roof volume, seamlessly combining wall and roof elements to read as carved architectural forms within the undulating landscape. All of the units have exquisite views, flowing space and generous openings at the core of the design thinking. This is clearly contemporary architecture but sensitively clad in materials which relate to the area, its geology, heritage and landscape.
