anne-claire petit We have something to celebrate. It’s been ten years since we started our Kids & Home Collection. Thanks to you, our clients and supporters, our company Anne-Claire Petit Accessoires has grown into an international brand. It’s great to see how people from all over the world value and enjoy our collection.
“I have always been interested in handicrafts: crochet, knitting, needle point... I believe in the charm of slow production, in the beauty of a handmade product. By using traditional textile techniques to create a modern object, past and present come together.”
“In 2001, after years of designing fashion accessories, I chose to shift my focus to a kids & home collection. I am still happy I took that step. It gives me an endless freedom to create and to translate my love for colour and natural materials into a wide variety of objects. It’s equally as important to me that I can offer a collection that doesn’t go out of style after one short season. With all the love and energy put into our items by the Anne-Claire Petit team and by the women doing the handiwork, I believe they can be cherished for a long time.”

The Amsterdam office of Anne-Caire Petit Accessoires houses a small team. Here, we brainstorm ideas, choose colour schemes and make final sketches. After putting the design on paper we send a first prototype to China where we have a team of eight crochet experts. These women create the first sample and the pattern for production. Once we agree on the final prototype the other women in the villages can start crocheting. The material they use is biological cotton. As we have very strong ideas about the intensity of the colours, the cotton is dyed especially for us.

The women, now around two hundred, work at home often with their neighbours. They determine their own schedule, so when kids come home from school or harvests need to be taken care of - corn is the major crop in the region - the crochet is put aside. After a few months, when a shipload is complete, it is shipped by sea freight to Rotterdam harbour. From the Dutch warehouse we then ship our products to 44 countries all over the world.

For the last few years we have been designing special items for musea, as well as in partnership with illustrators. We really enjoy the challenge of reinterpreting graphics and paintings, from past and present, into 3D hand crocheted objects. One example is Rintje, a famous cartoon fox terrier in the Netherlands. He is well-known as a character in the awardwinning books and stories of illustrator and writer Sieb Posthuma. We have always had a soft spot for the illustrated Rintje and it’s been fun to cooperate with Sieb and create hand create a 3D hand crocheted version. photo: Amber Beckers
We love books at ACP Accessoires, especially the illustrated ones. And we love animals. Not surprisingly, we are fan of graphic artist Marc Boutavant and his world of Mouk. We share his love for color and simple forms and recognise his sense of humour and nostalgia. We’re excited to welcome Mouk to our collection. 22 • acpapers
Schaatsenrijden in een dorp, Hendrick Avercamp, c 1610, Rijksmuseum
For the Rijksmuseum, the Dutch national museum, we designed 17th century dolls. These figures were inspired by the winterlandscapes of the Dutch painter Hendrick Avercamp. As with this 17th century painter, artisanship is an essential element in our work.
Letter by Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo, c 21 November, 1888, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation)
French author and illustrator Alain Grée published over 300 books mainly in the 60’s and 70’s. With the revival of the style typical of that era, his books have made a come-back. Grée‘s characters boy Pilou, fox Capucine, small chicken Mirabelle and dog Romeo constitute a nice little family within our collection.
When, in 2009, the Van Gogh Museum organised a prestigious exhibition on the correspondence of Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh, we were asked to design an object to support this show. Our hand crocheted air mail envelope has been sold at the museum ever since.
