Fall is always an invigorating time at the College, and this year is no exception. From new students, faculty and staff to new programs and facilities, we have much to look forward to this year. After graduating the largest class in our history last May, we were pleased to welcome nearly 1,700 new and returning students to our two campuses this fall. Our student body now represents one of the most accomplished and diverse groups in the College’s 130 year history. Our continued commitment to the success of every student in a personalized learning environment is reflected in our data from last year showing just 3% of students leaving due to academic deficiencies. Such a low academic attrition is a tribute to the quality of our students, the dedication of our faculty and the depth of resources that we have in place to enhance the development and growth of every student. In order to further support our students’ educational success, we implemented a new academic structure consisting of four schools – the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the School of Health Sciences, the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Graduate Studies. This new structure will both better define our programmatic offerings and give them a clearer focus. We realize that student growth encompasses far more than just academic endeavors. Accordingly, we continue to improve the quality of life on our campuses. This summer we:

• Established a new Division of Campus Life and Global Initiatives and hired Jose Rodriguez, Ed.D. as our new Vice President. Dr. Rodriguez will focus on enhancing the quality of the student experience which will include developing a new program that is designed to offer a global experience for each ACPHS student. • Completed many campus improvements including major upgrades to Notre Dame Hall; the construction of new offices, classrooms and laboratories; and the completion of phase II of our three phase library renovation project. • Announced the launch of our “Moving Forward” Capital Campaign, whose goal is to raise $50 million to fund the enhancement of facilities, scholarships, endowed professorships and chairs. There is little doubt that these initiatives will continue to enhance the exemplary nature of our institution, but to do so we will need your support. With your help, you can be assured that the College will continue our progress, advance our standing and be positioned to reach even greater heights.

The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Board of Directors has approved a six-year extension of accreditation for the ACPHS Doctor of Pharmacy program. The extension represents the maximum number of years a program can receive as part of the customary accreditation cycle.

Sn Student News Colleges Against Cancer Chapter Wins National Award The ACPHS chapter of Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) beat out nearly 500 chapters across the country to capture “Outstanding Chapter of the Year” honors from the organization’s national office. The award is based on the chapter’s activities in each of the four strategic directions of CAC: Education, Advocacy, Survivorship, and Relay For Life. The College’s Relay for Life event alone has raised more than $80,000 for cancer awareness and research over the last two years.

Students Form New Chapters of Professional Organizations A student chapter of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) has been formed on the Albany campus. ACCP is a professional and scientific society that provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources enabling clinical pharmacists to achieve excellence in practice and research. Students have also formed a chapter of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), a group whose mission is to nurture student research at the College. There were 17 AAPS chapter members from the College who attended the Northeast Regional discussion group meeting in Connecticut this past spring. Nine of the students presented posters at the event.

Study Abroad Course Travels to Senegal Associate Professor of English and African Studies Kevin Hickey took six ACPHS students to the West African nation of Senegal as part of his Culture and Customs of Senegal course. The first time course was taught in conjunction with faculty members from Union College and UAlbany, and students from each of those institutions also participated in the 23-day trip. Over the course of the three weeks, students attended lectures at the West African Research Center in Dakar, enjoyed cultural activities such as concerts and sporting events, and performed internships at organizations throughout the region.

First Master’s Student Completes Successful Thesis The master’s program in Pharmaceutical Sciences was the first graduate program offered by ACPHS when it was announced in 2008. Last spring, Florian Radu became the College’s first master’s graduate after successfully presenting and defending his thesis titled, “The Effect of Antioxidants on the Response of Rabbit Urinary Bladder to In Vitro Ischemia/Repertusion.” Radu, who is currently attending Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York City, is pictured at left with his faculty mentor, Professor Robert Levin.

Sn Student News Vermont Campus Students Provide Screenings at Champlain Valley Fair Members of the Vermont Campus’ APhAASP Chapter offered general health screenings and information about proper medication management at the Champlain Valley Fair and Exposition. Twenty-six students and two faculty members conducted 117 blood pressure readings and answered medication related questions from dozens of fair-goers throughout the day. They also provided pamphlets about medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, osteoarthritis, and high cholesterol. Each person who visited the booth received a blood pressure log to encourage them to continue to keep track of their numbers.

Rho Chi Receives Award for Chapter Proposal The Rho Chi Honor Society Gamma Gamma Chapter has been selected by the national organization to receive a 2011 Chapter Project proposal award for their project, “Balance Beyond the Books.” The project is a multi-faceted initiative aimed at supporting fellowship among students, faculty, and staff at ACPHS, while fostering development of student pharmacists as well rounded life-long learners.

Two Students Receive APhA Scholarship Awards The American Pharmacists Association chose two ACPHS students among its nine 2010 Foundation Scholarship recipients, making ACPHS the only school in the country with multiple winners. Scott Beeman ’12 was chosen as the Paul Pumpian Scholar, and Kyle Guay ’11 was selected as the Sam Kalman Scholar. The APhA Auxiliary/APhA Foundation Student Pharmacist Scholarship Program evaluates applicants on their potential to become pharmacy leaders, as demonstrated by involvement in school and community activities and academic performance.

Biomedical Technology White Coat Ceremony Draws Alumni Support The ACPHS Biomedical Technology program, with its concentration in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, is designed to appeal to students with the curiosity and investigative drive to explore the many facets of human health. Students in the program may also seek to pursue their master’s in Biotechnology-Cytotechnology as part of a five-year joint degree offering. ACPHS would like to thank Maryann Roefaro ’81, guest speaker at the 2011 Biomedical Technology White Coat Ceremony, for sharing valuable insight and her professional experiences with the students and guests. Maryann is currently the CEO of the Hematology/Oncology Associates of Central New York.

Fn Faculty News Infectious Diseases Publication Ranked One of Year’s Best The American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy recently reported on a survey of the most significant publications in Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy in 2010. A publication from ACPHS faculty members Nimish Patel ‘06, Pharm.D., and Tom Lodise, Pharm.D., was ranked second among the 25 papers identified in the survey. The publication, titled “Identification of optimal renal dosage adjustments for traditional and extended-infusion piperacillin-tazobactam dosing regimens in hospitalized patients” appeared in the January 2010 issue of Anitmicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

Dr. Hass Receives NIH Research Grant Martha Hass, Ph.D., an Associate Professor in the School of Arts and Sciences, has received a threeyear grant from the National Institutes of Health in the amount of $453,896. She will be developing a series of chemical compounds that could prove instrumental in limiting the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. The compounds, or codrugs, are derived from Vitamin E and lipoic acid. ACPHS students from both undergraduate and graduate programs will be active contributors to the project.

Amy Barton Pai Named Chair of Kidney Disease Coalition Amy Barton Pai ‘96, Pharm.D., has been appointed Chair of the NYS Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Coalition. The NYS CKD Coalition is a statewide, multidisciplinary workgroup that seeks to increase public and professional awareness of CKD and promote improvements in disease screening and research across the state. Dr. Barton Pai has also been appointed as an editor for the Journal of Nephrology and Therapeutics.

Helping Identify Cancer in Peru Associate Professor of Health Sciences Indra Balachandran, Ph.D., spent ten days this summer as a cytotechnologist volunteer in Cusco, Peru. Peru has an incidence rate of cervical cancer that is more than ten times that of the U.S., and Dr. Balachandran and the team of volunteers helped analyze approximately 1,400 pap smears for signs of cell abnormalities. “We worked very hard and cohesively in less than optimal conditions, and by the end of our time in Cusco, we were able to diagnose a number of precancerous lesions and one case of cervical cancer,” she said.

Teachers of the Year Department of Basic and Social Sciences Instructor Ellen Kennett ’91, Department of Pharmacy Practice Instructor Andy Flynn ’87, and ACPHS-Vermont Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Professor Dorothy Pumo were the recipients of ACPHS’s Teachers of the Year awards for 2010-11. Kennett received the Traditional Teacher of the Year award, which recognizes an outstanding faculty member in the first two years of the curriculum. Dr. Pumo received the Vermont Faculty Member of the Year award, and Flynn received the Professional Teacher of the Year award for the third time.

Vermont Faculty Member Earns UVM Appointment The University of Vermont Medical Residency Program in Psychiatry has listed Clayton English, Pharm.D., as a faculty member in the Adult Psychopharmacology Clinic at Fletcher Allen Health Care. The Adult Psychopharmacology Clinic functions as a consultation service, and it is a longitudinal rotation for PGY-3 Psychiatry residents in the University of Vermont Psychiatry Residency Program.

Amit Pai Wins Award for Work with the FDA Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice Amit Pai, Pharm.D., has been awarded the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Regulatory Science Excellence Award for his work with the FDA Chronic Kidney Diseases Matrix Group. He has been working with the FDA to clarify the role of specific scalars (body surface area compared to alternate weight descriptors) in obese adults for clearance estimation. This award recognizes his work in developing an improved algorithm to estimate kidney function across the U.S. weight continuum.

Pharmacy Practice Chair Edits Clinical Pharmacy Book Rob DiCenzo, Pharm.D., chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice on the Albany Campus, edited the Clinical Pharmacistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Guide to Biostatistics and Literature Evaluation. The book is intended for use by clinical practitioners and clinical scientists to interpret the clinical data and/or establish appropriate experimental methodology. The book is available for purchase in the ACCP online bookstore.

Vermont Faculty Members Lead Professional Organization Joanna Schwartz, Pharm.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice on the Vermont Campus, has been named President of the Vermont Society of Health System Pharmacists. Sommer Zarbock, Pharm.D., who is also an assistant professor in Vermont, is the president elect.

Professor Publishes Book on U.S. Diplomatic History Ken Blume, Ph.D., a professor in the School of Arts and Sciences, recently published a new book entitled, The A to Z of U.S. Diplomacy from the Civil War to World War I. The book examines how the period from 1861-1914 played a critical role in shaping U.S. foreign policy in the 20th century.

Class of 2011 Establishes “Be the Change” Scholarship Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” The “Be the Change” scholarship was established by the Class of 2011 to support future ACPHS students and honor Ray Chandrasekara, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Arts and Sciences. The members of the Class of 2011 believe Gandhi’s statement exemplifies the type of person that Dr. Chandrasekara is, and they hope to encourage future generations at ACPHS to be the same. In the words of

one student, “Dr. Chandrasekara was, and continues to be, a mentor, a friend, and a great professor to the Class of 2011. He has influenced all of us who have crossed paths with him over the years. Dr. Chandrasekara has made those around him strive to become better people on a daily basis. He has a worldly view on life, hoping to do good by all and for all.” The Class of 2011, in wanting to leave behind a legacy for generations to come, cre-

Capital Campaign Since 2007, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences has been working closely with key community partners developing and raising vital funds to support students, programs, and campus growth during the “silent phase” of a major capital campaign. During Reunion Weekend 2011, Dr. James Gozzo, President of ACPHS, shared the focus and key components of this $50 million fundraising initiative – entitled “Moving Forward: The Campaign for Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences” – with members of the alumni community. “The Campaign will position ACPHS for the future by supporting necessary enhancements to ACPHS facilities, growing the endowment, cultivating and promoting an environment for faculty and student research projects, and increasing the ACPHS footprint from a national to a global institution of higher education,” said Dr. Gozzo. Members of the community who have been working closely with the College on the Campaign include Geno J. Germano ’83, Herbert Chorbajian, Michael F. Bette, and Hugh A. Johnson among other key community leaders, alumni, and Board of Trustee members. The late Alfred J. Collins Jr. ’53 also played a critical role in the Campaign’s early stages in his capacity as Chair of the Board of Trustees. Susan Lardner ‘84 with fellow missionary volunteers and community members of Impfondo which is located in the Republic of Congo, Africa.

Susan Lardner: A Woman on a Mission “Faith and belief that we are given this one life and we should make the most of it!” are the words that Susan Lardner of Gasport, New York and member of the Class of 1984, lives by each day. As a pharmacy student at ACPHS in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, Susan learned the difference that one person can make from professors like Susan Dumbleton (Associate Professor of English) and Robert Marois (Professor of Pharmacology). Following graduation, Susan moved to Rochester, New York to pursue her career in pharmacy. Following two years in the western part of the state, she moved back to Albany in 1986. Susan then began her work in the field of nuclear pharmacy and spent the next 22 years as a nuclear pharmacist. Susan’s life and work forever changed in 2006 when she embarked on a four week mission to the village of Impfondo which is located in the Republic of Congo, Africa. Susan served as a Missionary Pharmacist at L’Hospital Evangelique Le Pionnier (Pioneer Christian Hospital). Following this initial experience and her work with the patients and fellow health care missionaries, Susan decided that it was time to make a larger commitment to the people and patients of Impfondo. Susan signed on for two full years of missionary service beginning in 2008. “I am in a place in my life where I can afford to do this crucial work,” shared Susan when asked what motivated her to embark on this journey. “I love the patients whom I serve, and we are making an impact on their lives!” This past May, Susan continued her missionary service on the Africa Mercy in Sierra Leone. The Africa Mercy is one of the numerous vessels in the fleet of Mercy Ships that are serving, healing, and providing care to millions of hungry and poor throughout the world. Susan spent over 12 weeks aboard the Africa Mercy where she worked with fellow missionaries to provide vital care and treatment to the people of Africa. Following her time aboard the Africa Mercy, Susan returned to the village of Impfondo and Le Pionnier where she continues her mission and service.

Edward ’59 and Dorothy ’62 Fausel Scholarship “Our education at ACPHS enabled us to achieve our goals and our children to attain their goals.” Next to God and family, education has always been of prime importance to us while raising our three children. We have always said, “If you want to be a hermit on top of a mountain that’s OK, but let it be by your choice, not because you had no other options.” Our education at ACPHS enabled us to achieve our goals and our children to attain their goals. Although we contributed what we could to ACPHS over 50 years, we decided on our 50th wedding anniversary that it would be appropriate to do something a little more formally to say “thank you.” We hope it will encourage others who have benefitted from their ACPHS education to do something similar. We also appreciate Abbott Laboratories matching our yearly pledges in the past, present and future. Ed had his 50th reunion in 2009 and Dottie celebrates hers in 2012. She invites classmates to consider a similar commitment for their 50th reunion gift. As Chief Program Officer with Quality Partners of Rhode Island, Jeff oversees a large team of people with various working styles and personalities. “We’ve used the DISC Personality Assessment to help people realize who they are, how they work, how others perceive them, and how they can work better with others,” says Jeff. “I think students can learn a great deal from knowing who they are, and it will help to prepare them for great careers.” In the spring of 2011, Jeff and his wife Debbie (Stradling) ‘79 supported ACPHS students by providing the DISC Assessment for 40 of the College’s student leaders. Working along with the College’s Director of Career Services, Kristen Felthousen, the DISC facilitator helped students learn how to work smarter and better. “I never realized how my style might be interpreted by others. Alan Blum ‘69: Establishing a Legacy “Simply put, ACP gave me everything I needed for a successful career, so that is why I support the College,” says Alan Blum ‘69. After spending more than 30 years in a small independent pharmacy in White Plains, NY, Alan is now a supervising pharmacist at the A&P Supermarket in Mohegan Lake, NY. “It is the people that bring me back to work every day,” says Alan. When Alan was a student, Dean O’Brien was a guiding force. “He realized during my second or third year that I wasn’t doing as well as he thought I could be. Reunion Weekend 2011 Members of the alumni community celebrated their days as students at Reunion Weekend 2011, which took place June 3-5. Alumni, family, and friends shared memories and reconnected throughout many events during the three day celebration. The festivities kicked off with a fantastic day of golf and tribute to members of the alumni community at the 4th Annual Friends of Noah Sorensen ’97 and Mario Zeolla ’97 Memorial Golf Tournament. Friday evening included special anniversary celebrations for Classes of 1951, 1956, 1961, 1981, and 1986, amongst others and ACPHS Casino Night at the Hilton Garden Inn-Albany Medical Center.

On Saturday, alums had opportunities to tour the campus, visit the Pharmaceutical Research Institute, and gain insights and updates on the great strides ACPHS students are making in Albany and Vermont. Following tours of the campus and new facilities, alums and guests had opportunities to tour Albany’s historic buildings, the Capitol, and even take a plunge into the Hudson River courtesy of the Albany Aqua Ducks Touring Company. Saturday’s events concluded with a mid-afternoon celebration at Ralph’s (now Red’s on the Park), a cocktail reception, entertainment compliments of One Man Short, and a great meal (Dinosaur BBQ) on the lawn outside of the ACPHS Student

Center and Library Building. Members of the community wrapped up Reunion Weekend 2011 festivities during the Sunday morning Farewell Brunch at the Hilton Garden Inn. 18th Annual Dean’s Cup On August 8, 2011, members of the ACPHS community came together at the 18th Annual Dean’s Cup Golf Tournament to raise over $30,000 in support of the Dean’s Endowment for Excellence Scholarship Fund.

This year’s event was held at the Albany Country Club in Voorheesville, New York. Community partners, alumni, administrators, faculty, staff, and current students were treated to a great day of golf at one of the Capital District’s finest golf courses. John Denio, Dean of Students, presented Connor Callaghan with the 2011 Dean’s Endowment for Excellence Scholarship.

Connor began his first year at ACPHS this fall. Connor expressed his appreciation and thankfulness to his family and all those who have made this scholarship possible. As this year’s scholarship recipient, Connor will receive $3,000 in financial support for each year he attends the College. Since the tournament’s inception in 1994, more than $585,000 has been raised through this fundraising event – an average of nearly $33,000 per year. Currently, six students are receiving financial assistance from this one scholarship fund. Vicki DiLorenzo, VP of Institutional Advancement, and Dr. James J. Gozzo, President of ACPHS,

expressed their sincere gratitude to the members of community who supported the event. The College is looking to its community members and partners as we aim to achieve our new fundraising goal of $750,000, which will help ensure continued scholarship assistance for students and their families for years to come. 4th Annual Friends of Noah Sorensen ’97 & Mario Zeolla ’97 Memorial Tournament Highlights The Friends of Noah Sorensen and Mario Zeolla (FONSMZ) was formed in honor of these special men who lost their lives suddenly on June 2, 2007. While returning home from Boston, the day after enjoying a Yankees-Red Sox game at Fenway Park, these good friends and ACPHS alumni were tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident. In their memory, FONSMZ and Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) hosted the 4th Annual Noah Sorensen and Mario M. Zeolla Memorial Golf Tournament on June 3, 2011, at the Colonie Golf and Country Club (www.coloniegcc.com), in Voorheesville, NY. Taking place on one of the longest days of the year, this event was an effort to continue the bright light that was Noah and Mario. On a beautiful breezy day, 128 golfers came and paid tribute to these men and fellow members of the community.

1934 Recently members of the Office of Institutional Advancement had an engaging visit with Leon Trotman. Mr. Trotman is believed to be the College’s oldest living graduate.

1958 Rocco Giruzzi recently agreed to return and serve on the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Board of Trustees.

1974 Kandyce Daley, former Chair of the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Board of Trustees, recently agreed to return and serve on the Board of Trustees.

1975 Owen Holloran of Kinney Drugs, was recently promoted to SVP pharmacy procurement. As SVP pharmacy procurement, Halloran is responsible for overseeing all pharmaceutical purchasing for Kinney Drugs retail, mail-order and institutional pharmacy. Halloran has led the pharmacy purchasing department since 1996 and third-party contracting since 1999. Owen began his career with Kinney Drugs in 1978 as a staff pharmacist, and has served in several management positions, including his recent position of VP professional services. Halloran

serves as a board member on the Kinney Drugs Foundation and the Canton-Potsdam Hospital. “The knowledge and experience of Owen Halloran complement the Kinney Drugs mission of providing the highest-quality pharmacy, health and retail services to the communities we serve,” stated Bridget-ann Hart (ACPHS Class of ’80), president and COO of Kinney Drugs. “We will continue to benefit from his leadership and look forward to his contributions as we continue building our employeeowned company.”

1978 Following graduation from ACPHS, Anne P. Schaad, attended law school in Portland, Maine between 1979 and 1981. In 1982 she began her career with the Maine State Police and retired from her position in 2005. She is currently enjoying retirement and is keeping busy building wooden boats.

1982 Congratulations to Nick Zacharczenko REUNION DDS, MSD, R.Ph. of Albany who won a pair of gold medals at the International Snowshoe Championships held in Lewiston, Maine. Nick won the 100meter and 200-meter sprint races in the advanced masters (50 and over) division. These great achievements complement Nick’s additional athletic pursuits in tennis, personal training, track & field. Nick is also a certified Master Gardener, and enjoys tending to his beloved blueberry bushes as often as he can!

REUNION Colin and Sarah Price recently participated in the “International Aid Serving Kids” program and set up make-shift clinics with pharmacies serving Haitians and Dominicans living on sugar plantations called batays in the Dominican Republic. They filled about 1000 prescriptions during the week they volunteered and attended to patients with skin infections, parasites, malnutrition, wounds and pain. 2009 Jessica Baugh, Pharm.D. has been named 2011 Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year in New York by Pharmacists Mutual Companies. This prestigious award was conferred on the Voorheesville pharmacist at the recent meeting of the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York. Jessica has been employed by Rite Aid Pharmacy since 2009 and is completing her Executive Residency in Association Management at National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations in Richmond, Virginia. The Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year award is presented annually to a pharmacist in each state for individual excellence and outstanding contribu-

The ACPHS Alumni Council represents more than 5,000 graduates of the College. The Council is comprised of alumni volunteers from various class years and is a key liaison between the alumni community and the ACPHS Administration, Board of Trustees, and student body.
