IMPROVING CREW LONGEVITY ON SUPERYACHTS

nno and I are delighted to share news of ACREW+, the industry’s first suite of tools designed specifically to improve crew retention and performance. In the last ten years ACREW has worked with Captains and crew from over 1500 vessels and poor crew retention has certainly been cited as a consistent barrier to overall performance standards as well as
the Crew Experience and Owner/ Guest Experience. As ACREW we decided to investigate this area to gain a deeper understanding of the problems in the hope to create a practical, measurable solution. We explored how job satisfaction affects overall performance onboard. Significant international studies have demonstrated that demotivated and disengaged crew will cost the yacht on a minimum of €25001 per year per crew member. When asked what creates a good sense of job satisfaction the answer has overwhelmingly been “a sense of purpose and recognition”2. Crew with low job satisfaction are likely to leave their position and in fact 69% of all junior crew and 65% of all chefs leave their job in their first year
of employment3. When compared with onshore average retention of 90% it is evident that the low retention rate on yachts (60% - 80%) needs to be addressed . We then turned our attention to what parameters lead to a successful hire. Learning from the corporate world, we see that recruitment has been proven to be significantly more successful when the candidate is profiled4. Looking at yachting we see that the success of a crew placement would better not rely on CV and experience but also on their suitability to fit the team and their working style.

Speaking conservatively, a junior crew member will cost 5,000€, a senior crew member costs 8,000€ - 10,000€ and a captain will incur a cost of 20,000€ - 30,000€5.
Finally, we investigated the true cost of recruitment. It is well acknowledged that the crew are the single greatest expense for any superyacht. When

These findings lead us to the question: What tools will enable a superyacht to improve job satisfaction, team cohesion, performance and ultimately longevity onboard?
