the Acros Story H
ighest quality standards have a long tradition at ACROS, as well as the wideranging know how which we, as a daughter company of a renowned manufacturer of roller bearings, make use of. For that reason our competence lies primarily in all mounted and turntable parts on and in the bicycle. Consequently we still manufacture a majority of our products at the production headquarters in Renningen, about 30 km southwest of Stuttgart. More than 15 years of experience flow into the development and manufacturing process of our bike components. The in-house located production enables not only a flexible, prompt and effective procedure, but also makes it possible to implement fresh and innovative ideas directly. As dedicated bike enthusiasts we prefer to sit in the saddle than in front of our desks. Our local trail grid in the so called “Schwabenländle” serves not only for numerous practical and experience tests, but also stimulates our passion for bikes day in, day out. With this in mind we wish you the very best on your bike. Ride safe ! Your ACROS Team

Standardized Headset Identification System
The Standardized Headset Identification System (S.H.I.S.) creates a common language for describing modern bicycle headsets. The system provides comprehensive and scalable headset fitment information in a standardized format; making it easy to communicate headset requirements based on frame and fork interfaces. The system addresses the critical interface dimensions required to fit a fork to a frame, as well as bearing location/cup type. To determine fit, four dimensions are needed: 1. head-tube top inside diameter 2. head-tube bottom inside diameter 3. stem-clamp diameter of fork 4. crown-race seat diameter of fork Bearing location and cup-type are identified as external cup (EC), semi-integrated zero stack (ZS), or integrated (IS).

ew parts for the most-loved of all vehicles, the bike, are always a popular topic of discussion amongst friends. A new suspension fork, new brakes or a cutting-edge shifting system — anyone has an opinion about these things, and often they are worlds apart from each other. But there are also the small, inconspicuous things that most people tend to forget until — on a ride after a stressful work day or a crossing of the Alps — they are suddenly struggling to turn their squeaky headset.

At ACROS, we have been addressing problems like this for more than 15 years. Being a subsidiary company of a bearing manufacturer, we use our extensive know-how in bearing technology to develop headsets that won’t let you down. Producing our exceptional, high-end stainless steel bearings is pretty complex but worth the effort because

of their superior durability. This way, we have been setting new standards in the aftermarket for years. Optimised seals keep the interior of your headset free of moisture and dirt, while our bearing grease was specifically designed to ensure a stable lubrication even at low speed and under high pressure. Overall, our headsets offer you a superior performance that leaves you carefree, no matter in which conditions you are riding your bike. Continuous progress is an important part of our philosophy at ACROS, and we are constantly striving to further develop our mutual passion — biking. Our new “fiber technology“ is a result of these efforts, featuring a bearing cup and a headset cover made from fibre-reinforced high-polymer. A drastically improved shock damping, which increases your bearings’ durability, an intelligent two-component sealing technology, and a weight reduction of 20% to 30% impressively illustrate our new technology’s potential. We will continue trying our best to produce products that you can rely on because the details are not the details, they make the product.

CROS bottom brackets differ from bottom brackets of our competitors in some ways. On the one hand, the material of the ball-bearings is different; we only use stainless steel, which is more expensive to produce but excels in a significantly higher durability. On the other hand, ACROS has been focusing on the use of angular contact ball-bearings for years. These are able to absorb axial and radial forces, which for example act when pedalling out of the saddle, a lot better than ordinary grooved ball-bearings. The bearing grease
completes a good industrial ball-bearing, which is why we have developed a special high-performance grease in cooperation with a leading lubrication company, adapted to the requirements of bicycles. Our grease ensures a stable lubrication even at low speed and under high pressure. On top, it is highly water-repellent and effectively prevents leaching. This is what quality means to us, and when we talk to our customers, we often get the feedback that ACROS bottom brackets exceed the lifespan of a competing product three to four times.

let‘s talk
pedal!
It is our aim to guarantee you the best possible time on your bike. Reason enough to introduce you to the creative minds behind our products. This is why we had breakfast with enduro racer and engineer Fabian Scholz, who has developed our
22
A-Flat pedals. Fabian prepared a delicious espresso with his old La Pavoni machine and over coffee and croissants, we spoke about his career as a racer and engineer and the development process of the A-Flat pedals.
Hi Fabian, thanks for having us and taking the time for a short “pedal talk“. For the people who don’t know you, could you please tell us a bit more about your athletic career? Sure. I started as XC racer but realised pretty quickly that I was stronger downhill, and so I started dual slalom pretty soon. The initial spark was my triumph at the dual slalom hobby junior world championships in 2001. Parallel, I tried downhill, BMX und enduro from time to time. ACROS has already been on board back then as a co-sponsor of the small bike shop that sponsored me. There came a point when I had to take a break from racing but needless to say, I still kept riding my bike. At that time, I also tortured one or another ACROS part for testing purposes. Cool, so you have been a versatile biker all your life. When did you take the step and started a professional career? Did you stake everything on one card to become a pro? With the establishment of the Focus Trail Team and the emerging enduro trend, everything came together. Luckily, I could combine my engineering job perfectly with our team activities and therefore did not solely depend on biking — despite all the fun, it was important for me to have a solid foundation. Everything seems to have worked out well for you. In 2015, you claimed the German enduro champions title. ACROS supported the Focus Trail Team, too. How did you get to connect with us, what is your ACROS story? We have been in contact for a long time because of the sponsoring. After an internship and a couple of holiday jobs, where I was even allowed to fine-tune the legendary ACROS Mamba suspension fork, it got more serious. It was my goal to gain some practical orientation during my studies, and so I got first insights into an engineer’s daily routine.
A-FLAT XL The ACROS A-FLAT XL pedals impress with their extra-large footprint. 9 pins per pedal side offer superior grip on the trails, while the precisely fitting seal protects the interior from dirt and dust. The combination of extra-large slide bearings and highend ACROS stainless steel industrial ball-bearings guarantees durability in any area of use. article No. 155.02.000R1 Weight 440 g Sizes 120 x 110 x 20 mm pins 18 (per pedal) color options black, blue, red price 99,95 €
Ok, so you did not only push yourself on an athletic level. How did you end up working on the A-Flat pedals and how could you contribute your racing experiences? Back then, my assignment was pretty easy: developing new ACROS pedals. I was very free and could construct the pedals according to my own ideas. Most pedals on the market had a pretty small platform, so the reason for the success was the large footprint, which was providing better bike control. Like this, the pedals known as A-Flat XL were born — the originators of the A-Flat series. In general, you feel if products were developed by pale theoreticians or by people who actually live for their sport. The A-Flat has a very distinctive, characteristic shape. What was the idea behind that? With the large platform, it is important to still have enough freedom of movement so you don’t hit each
23
and every rock. To get the maximum out of this, the edges were bevelled. As well, the pins needed to be easily accessible and well-placed. The pedals’ stability was important too. All of that was incorporated into the design. The A-Flat family was later complemented by the MD as an allrounder and the SL for weight fetishists. So we talked about the outer design but it’s what’s inside that counts. Please tell us about your thoughts while constructing the axle. I am not a fan of over-engineering — often, keeping it simple is the better way to do things. In theory, there are seemingly better solutions but they don’t stand the test of practice. That’s why we use established products and rely on a combination of slide bearings and ballbearings. Our solution is sturdy, reliable and on top easy to maintain. Thank you for the deep insights. It is interesting, which thoughts and ideas go into the development of seemingly simple products like pedals. What are your future goals — both professionally and athletically? Haha, I am not getting any younger either, so the number of races I will compete in will rather decrease. Professionally, I focus 100% on engineering again. I am happy to work with a bike manufacturer and do not, for example, have to work nine-to-five on a side-view mirror motor at Daimler. It is pretty cool to be able to contribute your own ideas and your passion into a product that you use yourself. But I’m sure there are some interesting bike projects ahead. Not long ago, I went on a “bike-packing“ trip not far from Barcelona. Besides my enduro activities, this was a beautiful thing to do. Fabian, thanks for taking the time and preparing a delicious espresso. The ACROS team wishes you “happy trails“ and a hand’s width of dirt under your tires.

We put a lot of effort in the disposition of the grippy steel pins instead of screwing in as many pins as possible. This way, our pedals offer superior grip but still allow for enough

flexibility to drift “foot out, flat out“ through the next corner, without blind flying the next few metres while being busy with rearranging your feet back onto the pedals. With three different models, you can choose a pedal that perfectly fits your needs: XL with an extra-large footprint for maximum control, SL in combination with a titanium axle for weight fetishists or MD for all areas, from relaxed all-mountain tours to full throttle enduro action.

ur friends over at the Scott Bike24 MTN Race Team are not only successful at marathon and enduro races using our bike parts. Following their team motto “Beyond Trail“, they regularly head out to new trail and gravel adventures, where they ride off the beaten track and discover new routes. There is probably no better way to test our Road Disc Carbon wheel set’s endurance than on such a trip. But find out yourself what happened in the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains on the next pages:
30
To discover a new world, you need to travel far — at least that’s what we thought. So it was new to us that only 1.000 km from home, there was a totally different world waiting for us to be discovered. Us, that’s six buddies from Dresden with a passion for trail and gravel road adventures in the Eastern European mountains. After having a look at a map of Europe and the Carpathian Mountain range, we discovered that a small part of the Carpathians was running through Ukraine. This small but mighty part called Bieszczady Mountains is up to 2.000 m high and at the same time an unknown part of the mountain range. This was calling for an adventure. After taking a look at Google Maps and Booking.com, we realised that our trip would not only be rustic but also funny. After crossing the border from Slovakia to Ukraine, our adventure, which felt like travelling back in time, began with an immigration officer’s nonchalant quote…
„Ride safely, in Ukraine everyone drives in the middle of the road,“ and so we found ourselves riding in the centre of the carriageway, too. If there was any asphalt, the middle of the road was the only place where it was fit for traffic. We were expecting lots of gravel after seeing a couple of photos but the conditions of some “roads“ were still underwhelming. A gravel road adventure par excellence! Anyway, these “village roads“ are the place to be for the shy but friendly Ukrainians in the Bieszczady Mountains. Anyone from horse, chicken, cow, Lada to school children and Tatra wood trucks travels in the middle of these roads, whereas humans and animals are the more common sights. The fully developed telephone network and internet connection did not help with the fact that our accommodation bookings were not taken seriously at most places. So it happened that one of our hosts had to jump into his Lada Niva and drive to the next village to buy groceries for us. Please note that we made him do so only after showing him our booking confirmation three times. After a quick feast, his apology came in the form of a home-distilled “dessert“ and the information that “in Ukraine, you always drink three of these“…

iN UKRAINE EVERYONE DRIVES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD !

We also need to mention that we did not see a single supermarket on our trip. You will get your essentials in a so-called “Magazin“, a.k.a. corner shop. It did not matter to us anymore that half of the things we found there had already expired. How can cookies, wafers, vodka, and pickled cheese corrupt anyway? The scenery of the Bieszczady Mountains is incredibly beautiful and still untouched by tourism. You can see that Ukrainians nourish and cherish anything they own. Every village we passed made us dream to own one of the little, colourful wooden houses one day. The people are lighthearted despite their simple lifestyle and just make the rules as they go; who needs things like a driver’s licence, motorcycle helmet or MOT up there after all? As easygoing as many things were, as tasty and substantial was the food. We did not doubt the freshness of meat and vegetables anymore after witnessing how 32
they were delivered. Like an ice man at home, driving from village to village selling ice cream, in the Bieszczady Mountains a chicken man sells chicken out of his car; the chicken is not sold out of the freezer but slaughtered directly at the Lada. Do we need to mention the mandatory Soljanka or Borschtsch, which is offered as a starter at an incredibly cheap price? We just love the trails and roads of the Sudetes, Tatra, and Beskids. And now we fell in love with the Ukrainian Bieszczady Mountains. We will be back and continue our trip along the Carpathians, that’s for sure! Text and Fotos: A. Stark and S. Ott

Road sp carbon We fancy a clean design. Even though the disc started its triumph, a classic rim brake is still a valid choice and combines a classic look with modern technology. The ACROS Nineteen Road Straightpull hubs offer optimum stability with the possibilty to fine tune the hub volume in three steps and provide you a great foundation. All of this is complemented by Baccara Carbon rims with a rim height of 45mm and a modern shape — in our opinion the best mix when it comes to aerodynamics and easy handling. The basalt coating carries heat away quickly and stops you in an instant because with the Road Straightpull Carbon wheels, speed will be your middle name.

amir kabbani Dirt and Slopestyle Pro Rider
Hi Amir, please introduce yourself. Where are you from, which disciplines are you competing in? I am Amir Kabbani from beautiful Boppard am Rhein and am 27 years old. I feel comfortable on any bike and like switching between the different disciplines. Can you describe your style of riding? Describing my own style of riding is definitely not that easy. I would say that people know me for powerful riding with a tendency to do tricks, haha! What do you like to ride most? As I said, I spend most time on my trail bike and the slopestyler. Thanks to the new geometries and 650B, I can do nearly everything that I like with those two bikes. What are your goals for the season? Are there any special projects coming up? My main goal is to spend as much time as possible on the bike and to implement cool projects. I love to make things happen through photos and videos. At the moment, I am planning a large video project for fall 2017. I am looking forward to telling you more about it soon. You are riding ACROS A-FLAT pedals and ACROS wheels. What do you like about them? What I like about them is simple: Anything from ACROS that I fix to my bike stays put. It doesn’t matter if it’s pedals, hubs, or a headset — once installed, I don’t have to think about it anymore. Also, the parts look amazing and are some of the most lightweight ones on the market.

Most of our concepts are formed on the trails and later end up in our product management and at our R&D teams. Careful construction with modern 3D-CAD programs are the foundation of our product development. In the next step, valuable insights are gained
by FEM analysis with a consideration of the forces being at work. After computer tests, we are back on the trails. The prototypes have to withstand an in-depth field test. At the same time, we perform complex endurance tests at our in-house test station.
This way, we find out if theory and practice match and if we can start batch production. With a 3D printer, the first shapes can be developed and tested for their efficiency. From the CAD design to the finished product, anything is created and monitored in-house.
Modern inspection and measurement technologies are crucial to guarantee that our angular contact ball-bearings run smooth and steady, can be pressed
in with the right amount of strength and fit perfectly into their seat. All of this comes down to tenths and hundredths. Last but not least the surface has
to meet our expectations so that a good and even result is achieved by anodising. Only parts that are 100% perfect end up in our assembly.
42
Photos: M. Wragg
The best material for each part is already determined in the development process and has to be purchased, tested and prepared. Then, the time has come to lathe, mill and saw. Of course, we
only use premium tools and modern machines and our trained professionals make sure that our products are manufactured precisely — they are the foundation of our high standards. Our
in-house production in Renningen allows us to react quickly to market needs and offers us the opportunity to easily put new ideas into action.
Stickers would definitely be cheaper but would not meet our quality standard. For that reason, the label and the ACROS logo are lasered onto any hub — all
of that happens in-house. At the end of the manufacturing process, the final assembly is made by hand. Each and every hub gets the attention it deserves.
After the final inspection, all hubs are packaged and ready to be installed on your bike.

Remy Absalon Enduro pro, multiple times megavalanche winner
Hi Remy, please introduce yourself. Hello I am Rémy Absalon, pro enduro MTB rider, riding for the Scott SR Suntour Enduro Team. I am 33 and I live in Les Vosges mountain (North East of France). Can you describe you riding style? I like to ride as fast as possible on the longest downhill possible. I ride quite smooth but I like to play with my bike, drifting even if it is not the most efficient ;) What do you like to ride most? Maybe I am a bit chauvinistic but I guess I prefer to ride at home, on super loamy trails! That’s so good, you can ride fast, you have grip, it is pretty easy to ride but very fun. What are your goals for the upcoming season ? Do you have any special projects coming up ? My main goals are the mass start DH marathon. I am pretty excited to race very soon the Mountain of Hell and the Megavalanche. The EWS are also a goal but not the final ranking but more to be strong on a few rounds. For the next project, there is the arrival of the new Scott Genius bike middle of June, so I am super happy to ride this new toy and also to do some promotion stuff like videos... You are riding ACROS Nineteen Enduro hubs. What do you like about them? I have tested several hubs the last years and I am very happy to ride the ACROS hubs now. It is high quality, it turns perfectly and it is very reliable : I often ride in the mud, wash the bike and it is not a problem, it is still working without any maintenance. But the thing I prefer is that when you start to pedal, the hub engages very rapidly.

FOR US QUALITY IS... P
robably the most important bike components are the ones keeping the wheels spinning — the hubs. So we put our heads together with our engineers and thought about how we could further improve our current lineup. We were bubbling over with ideas; we wanted them lighter, with a more modern design, a different freewheel system and first of all a new axle system. So we started with the axle system, focusing on the bearings. Being a subsidiary company of a bearing manufacturer offers certain advantages and enabled us to develop totally new bearings. Similar to our headsets and bottom brackets, we decided in favour of angular contact bearings, which can absorb stronger forces. To increase stiffness, we adapted the axle diameter from 17 mm to 19 mm.
1
9
ANGULAR CONTACT BEARINGS
Using modern methods of calculation, the inner construction and the outer dimensions of ACROS hub bearings were revised completely. The bearings were adapted to their purpose of application — less weight and more loads. For that reason, the hubs now feature stainless steel angular contact ball-bearings. A specific high-performance grease lubricates them evenly and reduces rolling friction. 2
4
THE CLAMP System
Our “The Clamp“ system is already well-established in the headset segment and now, the principle of clearance adjustment was carried over to the hubs. The system consists of two parts; when tightening the adjustment screw, the screw ring and insert ring are screwed into each other and adjust the axle’s clearance. 3
The clamp - ADJUSTMENT SCREW
You won’t believe it but developing the adjustment screw took quite a bit of brainpower because it needed to be self-tapping and self-retaining at the same time. 5
ALLOY AXLE
For all our hubs, we use 19 mm king-size aluminium axles. As a consequence, they are incredibly lightweight but still super stiff. 6
Also, we should not withhold the new freewheel system, which we changed from a detent to a tooth lock washer system. The hub shell is made of 7075 aluminium and comes with a Straightpull or regular flange depending on the model. The hub’s clearance can be adjusted easily with our “The Clamp“ system, which is already well-established in the headset segment.
7
RATCHET SYSTEM
The newly designed ratchet system is responsible for force transmission. A part of the chopper disc design has already been integrated into the freewheel and its counterpart sits flexibly in the hub body. Made of high tenacity aluminium, it is super lightweight. Thanks to a specific surface coating, friction and attrition are reduced and the system becomes more durable. 8
FREEWHEEL BODY
Made of high tenacity 7075 aluminium, the rotor holds your sprockets and makes sure that you are moving forward. Our rotor is available both for classic sprockets as well as the Sram 11 and Shimano 11 versions. 10
Straightpull FLANGE
When constructing the Straightpull flanges, first of all, we focused on arranging the spokes. Our goal was to get the highest possible wheel stiffness out of any hub model. 11
ENDCAP
The endcaps determine the axle standard resp. the width and fix the hubs to the frame. All ACROS hubs can easily be converted into another standard by changing endcaps and axles.
HUB BODY
The hub body is made of high tenacity aluminium. Weight is systematically reduced by adjusting the wall thickness to the actual workload. Depending on the area of use, we distinguish between a “straightpull“ and a common flange. When designing the spoke holes, we focused on maximum wheel stiffness and reinforced the hub holes with common flanges. 53

or our carbon bars, we teamed up with an experienced German carbon professional. This way, we were able to manufacture our handlebars 100% in Germany. A so-called “in-mould-stack-up” process ensures a precise positioning of the fibres and thus enables a composition depending on the workload of each area; the upper and lower parts of the handlebar are especially solid due to unidirectional reinforcements, the reduced wall thickness of the lateral areas allows significant weight reduction.

Combined with the 35mm clamp, an unbeatable combination of low weight and high stability is achieved. Obviously, customers are always wary when a manufacturer promises his product can do this and that. For that reason, we let the renowned testing institute Zedler test our handlebars and they mastered the toughest “multi load MTB” test with excellent results.
