2020 HONORARY CHAIR

JAMES R. KEENE PRESIDENT/CEO KEENE BUILDING PRODUCTS

Born and residing in Cleveland, Ohio Jim started the Keene Family of Companies in 2002, focusing on building products, noise control, building envelope, drainage and ventilation. The theme has always been to be a marketing and manufacturing company and what better place than Northeastern Ohio to be located for plastics, chemicals and cement technology. Pioneering the use of a “Structural Strand” product and creating the category that improves the performance of flooring systems in apartment noise control along with walls and roofs for ventilation and drainage, Jim went from working on his own in the basement to 300,000 square feet of manufacturing space in five facilities. Today, the Keene operations has a coastto-coast presence in distribution and a significant contractor base in flooring noise control with 20 patents and numerous pending. It all started with the import of two containers from Europe. But, bucking the trend, Jim reversed the import strategy and started a manufacturing plant in the USA. Keene Building Products is the largest manufacturer in its class in North America today. Educated at Ball State University in accounting and passing the CPA exam, Jim avoided numbers. He worked in many aspects of noise, concrete and audio/video markets, including three Fortune 500 companies represented in Cleveland. With a family oriented business today, his son Alex, wife (Cynthia) and son-in-law (Dan Gibson) have all joined in the ventures that include two Weatherhead winners (Dependable Floor Prep and Keene Building Products) for the past three years, a 2018 start-up in resinous flooring, and the resurrection of four local branded companies through acquisition. Jim is a board member at Tri-C board of directors, a member of the Leadership Board for Multi-Family for the National Association of Home Builders, a member at Canterbury Golf Club and a long-term supporter of the American Cancer Society.

ABOUT THE COURSE "I'D MUCH RATHER FACE A RATTLESNAKE THAN A DOWNHILL 2-FOOTER AT CANTERBURY." -SAM SNEAD

Designed by Herbert Strong, the traditional Scottish course was expertly constructed to embrace the area's natural topography resulting in a demanding, but fair, course with a great variation of holes. Founded in 1921, it has a rich history of major golf championships including the US Open, PGA Championship, Senior Open, US Amateur Championship, and Senior PGA Championship. Canterbury is only the second club in the country to have hosted all five of the major golf championships that are played throughout the country. From Bryson Dechambeau to Jack Nicklaus, some of golf's best known names have tested their skills here at one of Cleveland's finest courses.

CANTERBURY GOLF CLUB HAS BEEN NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE TOP 100 GOLF COURSES IN THE U.S. AND ONE OF THE FINEST IN OHIO. 10

ABOUT THE CAUSE In Ohio, an estimated 67,150 new cancer cases will be diagnosed this year and 25,440 are expected to die from the disease. But there is hope. With the support of donors and partners like you, we are fighting cancer on all fronts and making a difference!

11

COVID-19 & CANCER As the Coronavirus pandemic continues, many cancer patients are facing tremendous challenges accessing the care they need to fight their cancer. From delayed treatment to losing their job and health insurance, the potential struggle for cancer patients has never been greater.Â

12

Research funded by the American Cancer Society led to a medication that saved my life.

13

A GENERATION OF CANCER RESEARCH DEPENDS ON US RIGHT NOW. When Jim was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, he didn’t think he’d live many years. He even told people if he lived five years that would be a good run. The 25plus-year survivor, who has been in six clinical trials, believes research is the reason that cancer is no longer a death sentence. Research is the cornerstone of our work in the fight against cancer. It helps drive new treatments. It tells us who is at risk and why. It informs prevention, patient support, and advocacy efforts. The American Cancer Society has been in this fight for more than 100 years. We’ve played a role in almost every major cancer research breakthrough in the last century and have funded the research of 49 investigators who went on to win the Nobel Prize. Our rigorous peer-review process is top notch, and we have reach into over 200 institutions nationwide which allows us to invest in the very best research projects. We know what to do when it comes to cancer research. But we need your help at this critical moment. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused so much loss. Our lives have been forever altered. If we don’t act now, those losses will be compounded. A generation of research depends on what we do right now. With your help, vital research won’t stop. Together, we can save millions of lives and lead the fight for a world without cancer. Please fund research and help us stop cancer.
