According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Earth Day is “the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide.” The first Earth SPECIAL AREAS OF INTEREST: • PERSONAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP • PINNACLE REMINDER • OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING WEBSITE • ASA & CSA UPDATES • COMMENCEMENT INFORMATION
Day was held on April 22, 1970. Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin senator, called the event an environmental teach-in, designed to educate people about behaviors that are harmful to the planet. Approximately 20 million people from across the nation participated in rallies and protests against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic waste, pesticide, freeways, deforestation, and endangerment of wildlife. The event was a huge success, resulting in Congress passing laws such as the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, and creating the Environmental Protection Agency. Since 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated every April 22. The event has come to include recycling, global warming, green energy, and energy conservation issues as the years have passed. It is now celebrated by more than 500 million people in 175 countries.

HELP! I’m a college student, and I’m stressed out! TIPS FOR DEALING WITH STRESS 1. Have a positive attitude about situations, even when they aren’t ideal. You may not have control over a situation, but you have control over your response. 2. Try to eat healthy. This can protect you from illness, contribute to a positive body image, help you concentrate, provide energy and mental focus, and even out your emotions. You can take an online diet assessment here: http://www.uhs.uga.edu/stress/dietassess.html. 3. Try to exercise for at least 20 minutes daily. It doesn’t have to be a hard-core work out—it can be as simple as walking. Engaging in enjoyable physical activity is an excellent way to relieve stress, gain energy, and maintain a healthy lifestyle in general. 4. Learn how to relax. Different people do this in different ways. It’s usually best to be alone in a quiet place while you do it. Try some of the following: reading, playing an instrument, taking a walk or a bike ride, playing with a pet, getting a massge, or calling a friend. 5. Get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation negatively affects every aspect of your life—health, relationships, emotions, academics, safety, etc. Make sure you’re getting enough rest. 6. Maintain healthy relationships with friends, family, and significant others. Resolve conflicts quickly and completely. Also, avoid relationships that cause unnecessary stress. They’re not healthy. 7. Manage your time well. It’s okay to be busy, but learn to say “no” to things when you really don’t have time. Make sure to plan your days with attainable goals, then stick to the plan. Reward yourself when you complete tasks. And avoid procrastination—it’s a huge stressor. 8. Alcohol, drugs, and tobacco all negatively affect stress. These contribute to less sleep, poorer health, irresponsible decisions, and financial loss. The best way to use these substances as stress relievers is simple: don’t. 9. Use your money wisely. Create a realistic budget and stick to it. Only buy things you can afford, and make sure those are things that you truly need. Pay your bills on time. Also, avoid credit cards— often, students end up accumulating debt that takes years to pay off. Adapted from: http://www.uhs.uga.edu/stress/wellnesslifestyle.html, http://www.ou.edu/oupd/stress.htm
