With Adult and Commuter Student Services: Off-Campus Housing Information Fair quickly approaching it’s only right to provide you with some helpful moving tips for those of you who are thinking about or will be moving off campus. Here are a few things you should consider before moving in an apartment: 1. Make sure you thoroughly inspect the place before signing a lease. Check for appliances that may not be working, leaks, scratches on the wall, stains on the floor ,and any other damages that you see, so that you won’t be charged for something you didn’t do after you move out. 2. Carefully review the lease before signing it. Check all policies, rules and guidelines and make sure you understand them. Get you parents or an attorney to look over it as well. It is very important that you know what you’re responsible for in the agreement. 3. Choose responsible roommates. Pick someone that will pay their rent on time, clean up, and won’t have parties that will damage the place. Set boundaries. Have a meeting about your expectations and set rules for the apartment. This will be helpful in preventing conflict. 4. Know your rights. Make sure you get a Tenant’s Rights Handbook and look over it. It’s important that you know what laws are in place to protect you. 5. Try to find a place with utilities and furniture included. It’s much easier to pay one set amount monthly. 6. Budget! You are living on your own now, so your parents won’t be there to pick up the slack. Make sure you set money aside for rent and food. 7. Have fun! Yes, living off-campus is a huge responsibility, but it’s the first step to adult life. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy the freedom!
The snow is gone and now spring is in the air. I hope that each of you had a wonderful spring break following the snow break. Not only is it time to focus on completing class assignments that await you, but it is a time to submit an application for a summer internship, scholarships, and/or leadership honor and recognition opportunities. You can do this by accepting various honor society invitations, such as Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK leadership), Golden Key or the PINNACLE Honor Society for nontraditional students. You can learn about internship and career opportunities via Career Services. You can also learn more about scholarships such as the Dr. Donald Carson Scholarship, the Adult Student Scholarship, academic department scholarships via the U of M Scholarship Office. You might be contemplating the idea of moving out and becoming more independent. If so, I encourage you to attend the annual “Off-Campus Housing Information Fair,” on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Michael D. Rose Theatre. Please feel free to talk directly to leasing representatives and other vendors regarding your interest in apartment living.
