INNOVATION SHOWCASE CATALOGUE
Who is Activate?
Activate! is a network of young leaders equipped to drive change for the public good across South Africa. The network connects youth who have the skills, sense of self and spark to address tough challenges and initiate innovative and creative solutions that can reshape our society. Activators have a shared purpose, commitment and responsibility to forge a better more just South Africa for the public good and for themselves. WhO is an Activator? An Activator is a young leader who joins this vibrant network to drive change for the public good, making their voices heard around the country. This could be in government, civil society, business, academia and their community. Activators have a shared purpose, commitment and responsibility to forge a better, more just South Africa - for the public good and for themselves. An Activator is a mobiliser, joining forces with other Activators and confronting some of the biggest challenges within their communities. An Activator is an innovator, coming up with creative solutions to challenges that seem impossible. An Activator is a connector, using connections to maximize social capital and drive change. An Activator is a trend setter, creating pathways for others in their community to follow. An Activator is a leader for public innovation, taking responsibility for being an effective citizen and leads others in the direction of positive change.
How is the Activate! network supported?
Activate! is built on an idea that through connecting capable young South Africans and building their innovation skills, they can bring about systemic change at a local and national level. To this end, the Activators (those who make up the network) are supported by an organisation which provides the necessary tools to advance their work. The journey of each Activator is mapped out by five pillars of learning and experience:
My identity
Development of a strong sense of self and self-worth
our identity
Developing a strong group identity and a strong active network of change drivers
LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION
Thinking outside the box for innovative solutions and leading others to advance our communities and country
SOCIOPOLITICAL NAVIGATION
Becoming an active and effective citizen who can navigate the socio-political landscape
RIPPLES AND WAVES OF CHANGE
Mobilising to create ripples of change on a community level, and working together to turn those ripples into national waves of systemic change.

WHAT IS THE INNOVATION SHOWCASE?
The Innovation Showcase is a major highlight on the ACTIVATE! calendar because it is an opportunity for all Activators to gather in one space to meet each other and share their experiences and passions. Activators’ ideas, initiatives and project will be on show as part of the Showcase Expo and will add to the rich fibre of the event. Imagine two days of innovation, exploration, interactive workshops, inspirational guest speakers, sharing ideas around transformational change. “We are particularly keen to build connections between Activators who have a particular focus/interest area and there’ll be sessions dedicated to creating an opportunity for people to meet and strategise around areas of common interest. i.e. how being part of a national network can advance your particular cause? The Showcase will also allow all participants to reflect on the road ahead for the ACTIVATE! training programme and the growth of the network.”, says Landy Wright, ACTIVATE! Training Director. The whole programme for the Showcase is wrapped around innovation and inspiration to stimulate and expand thinking horizons as expressed through the theme: “Inspiring Possibilities”. This catalogue is a rich resource of project ideas that have emerged from Activators during the course of the year. It showcases some of those ground-breaking ideas and while some have gone into the planning phase, others have not yet moved beyond conception, and others are much further down the road and are soon to be up and running. Every project, however, is the brain child of a young South African who says, ‘How can I think outside the box to transform my community and country?’
Together we are stronger. tshepang mokgatla, Gauteng ACTIVATOR since 2013
For anyone interested in ACTIVATE!: this catalogue will give you a sound idea of the mindset of Activators and the innovative solutions they are coming up with for communities and the country. For the Activators, this booklet is a measure of how far we have come. It will, hopefully, serve as a starting point for a longer journey which sees many of these proposals and ideas coming to fruition. This booklet is a point of connection: it could connect people with similar interests or ideas and it could connect existing projects with potential projects. As ACTIVATE! will be recruiting many more young people over the coming years, hopefully this booklet will also be an inspiration to them. For current funders, facilitators and other staff members, it is a useful monitoring and evaluation tool – a tangible and accessible product that can be analysed against what we set out to achieve. For potential funders looking for start-up projects, this is a user-friendly guide on some of the ideas that have emerged from young South Africans thinking innovatively in the interests of the public. Please note that every idea or proposal in this book is the intellectual property of the person(s)’s name attached to that project.

MUSICAL ART PERFORMERS (MAP) The challenge I am tackling … Part of growing up involves multiple transitions i.e. physical, emotional, social and cognitive and with each phase there are potential negative influences such as drug abuse and crime that can impact on youth behavior and employment. My idea … Create a youth programme which uses theatre (music, acting, dance) to train 13- to 18- year olds to be professional performers ready for the "world’s big stages". Young people will join because it is fun and educational, and allows them to learn essential life skills such as teamwork and more through creative arts. How my idea will address this challenge …Theatre is a powerful tool that can address social issues / behaviour and can increase employability and create employment. What is innovative or different about my idea … Using the arts as a tool for positive transformation, discovery and self-development. Harnessing the power of potential through connecting young people to work together. About me … I am currently studying a B Ed degree through UNISA, having completed a Business Management course at WITS in 2012. I am looking forward to launching MAP in 2014.

How my idea will address this challenge … Young people are given the opportunity to contribute and help create programmes that combat social issues. What is innovative or different about my idea … YMEP does not give handouts but empowers people to create solutions themselves. About me and my team … The YMEP team has 11 volunteer members: Sihle Khwela,Siphesihle Nyaba,Lungisani Myaka, Nokuthula Gumede, Lindokuhle Mkhize, Lindokuhle Mnguni, Thabiso Msane, Bonginkosi Dlamini, Nkosikhona Tsengu, Anele Jafta and Siphamandla Jama.

E-BLOCK COMMUNITY RESOURCE AND DAYCARE CENTRE The challenge I am tackling … At least 500 children in my community have no access to socioeconomic/educational development and recreational facilities and are exposed to many social ills such as crime, hazardous waste and no early childhood development care. My idea … The E-Block Community Resource and Daycare Centre will house a library, computer lab and daycare centre for underprivileged children. It will be built by community members out of 60% recycled materials with assistance from local stakeholders. The Block will serve the entire community with special needs and opportunities, working with public institutions (schools and colleges) and the SAPS to create a safer environment for everyone. How my idea will address this challenge … The Centre will facilitate socio-economic development between community, local authorities and other stakeholders. It will provide employment, support to parents who cannot afford crèche fees, and resources for youth. What is innovative or different about my idea … No such structure/support exists in our community and this Centre will facilitate much needed support services for the community. About the team… There are a number of organisations involved including the Homevale Youth and Community Development Task Team, BlaqApple Communications, Mpisi Training, Debate SA, Stabilis Development (Pty) Ltd (engineering), Bright Ideas, and Serve Is (youth movement).

My idea …Distribute free government condoms and sell branded condoms through various channels in KwaZulu-Natal. Promote the message through support groups, youth clubs, night clubs, local clinics, taverns, events, media, workshops and door-to-door campaigns. How my idea will address this challenge … Increased access to and wider choice of condoms, backed up by interactive messaging through many channels, to increase condom usage, thereby reducing infection rates. Exposing learners to teambuilding activities and different study skills that will empower them to be able to work in groups and tackle exams. What is innovative or different about my idea … Mentors will go to learners instead of the learners travelling. Progress will be measured by hosting Olympiads where learners will win prizes. Activities are based on problems, challenges, puzzles that develop high-order thinking skills, logic, deductive reasoning, etc. It is not important that a parent is literate or numerate, anybody can do Family Maths. IKASI YOUTH - EVERYDAY HEROES CLUB The challenge I am tackling … As is the case in many townships across South Africa, our small township community (Imizamo Yethu) is being broken apart by negative influences which produce poorly educated, under-stimulated and misguided high school youth. My idea … Ikasi Youth’s ‘Everyday Heroes Club’ is an afterschool programme developed specifically with township youth in mind. The Club runs workshops for a group of 12 high school boys. These sessions are focused on academic support, mentorship and personal leadership. How my idea will address this challenge … The afterschool programme gives youth the support they need in the face of negative influences. For example, over the past 12 months we have worked with and mentored a group of boys affected by HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty. What is innovative or different about my idea … We don’t just provide academic support, we aim to equip and empower each young hero. Our desire is to create a programme that can be replicated and rolled out across South Africa. About me and my team … We are a group of Activators who believe that children are the future of our country. We aspire to equip and help them to be independent thinkers who can generate change.

MY LITTLE TOY EMPIRE (MLTE) The challenge I am tackling … Awareness of the importance of Early Childhood Development (ECD) and how to do it effectively. My idea … Develop a facility where children are helped to play with toys in a way that stimulates their development and equip informal crèches with suitable teaching/activity resources. How my idea will address this challenge … As usage of the facilities will be free or at little cost, all children will get the benefit of ECD and this, in turn, will create awareness of the importance of ECD amongst the community. What is innovative or different about my idea … Instead of using formal education to stimulate a child that has never been to a school or received any form of education, MLTE uses toys (not educational toys, simple toys that are recognisable to the children). This is a less threatening, informal method of stimulating development which will keep the child interested and entertained, thereby creating a love for learning. About me … MLTE is a project under Hidden Halos, which I founded in 2011. I am 22 years old with a BA Psychology/Criminology. COMMUNITY STREET SPORTS LEAGUE The challenge I am tackling … Gangsterism, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence and lack of community ownership. My idea … Organising a Street Sport league, specifically for communities ravished by gangsterism and substance abuse. Matches will take place on the street to attract community attention and build community ownership. Each community enters teams for each sport and will operate in a typical league system. How my idea will address this challenge … The streets of these communities are usually used for criminal activities and other social ills. Through this project, we look to use the streets in a positive manner to build community ownership, build on the sporting talents on the community and show a united front against these social ills. What is innovative or different about my idea … Community Street Leagues have never been done as a technique to address a problem . We find this a unique way to address the challenges in these communities, while building community ownership while also providing the vulnerable youth in these communities with alternatives to the social ills they face. My idea … Train youth about astronomy and provide resources for them to offer star gazing, astronomy and storytelling experiences to local people and visitors through hotels/events. PHUNGASHE COMMUNITY RADIO STATION The challenge I am tackling … Lack of awareness about many things including: how to access information such as constitutional rights and Integrated Development Plans, and how to apply for financial aid for tertiary education. My idea … A community radio station that will be an education and entertainment platform and a way to involve the community. How my idea will address this challenge … The radio station’s programming will reflect the needs of the community i.e. teaching on radio and giving the community an independent voice that is free from any political interference or agenda. What is innovative or different about my idea … Many community radio stations in our country do not address the needs of their communities but rather copy what SABC is doing. About me and / or my team … Sinikiwe Mqadi completed a BA degree at Rhodes University in 2011, majoring in Journalism and Media Studies, Economics and IsiXhosa.
