We represent “ACTIVE HAMS AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY (AARS-KL)”,founded by a group of radio amateurs from Kerala. AARS-KL is established and administered by technologists and industrial experts to promote innovative communication, research, education and training in the field of wireless radio communication for the benefit of society. We formally adopted our constitution on 2nd of May 2018 under “The
Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955”. Whenever 'normal' communications go out, we are ready to use our radios to provide emergency communication services to their communities. Ham Radio possesses a vast potential to serve as an alternative communication channel, when the mainstream channels breakdown during disasters. Within Active Hams, We have three groups based on the activities they involved, 1) Community Rescue Volunteers (CRV) 2) Social Responsive Service Team (SRS) 3) Technology & Communication Research Group (ITC) Apart from these group we have corporate members, honorary members as well as advisory members too. They are also part of our group. These members includes head of MNCs ,industrialists, technocrats, lawyers, university scholars ,disaster management experts and communication policy makers. We are 20 plus members now. A licensed radio amateur want get an entry to our society as a normal member , we’ve put two criteria, first of all you should complete the Community Rescue Volunteer Training (CRV) from Fire Force, second you should participate a rescue / emergency communication operation and based on the performance in those activities, our governing body will take decision on membership. Community Rescue Volunteers (CRV) : Community Rescue Volunteers are trained ham radio operators to handle any emergency situation. They are expert in providing medical First Aid like CPR or any medical emergencies in land and water .CRVs are trained under Kerala Fire Force. Social Responsive Service Team (SRS) : Social Responsive Service Teams are initiating SRS activities like voluntary awareness and training programs for people, students, who are interested in radio communication and help them prepare for Amateur radio examination, setting up in scout and guide jamboree in schools, conduct mock drills and identify problems which they have faced during drills and promote CRV program to public. IT & Communication Research Group (ITC): ITC teams are getting trained in the latest development in the relevant field of communication and related technology. ITC activities include Live voice communication with the crew of International space station (ISS) for selected students from selected schools, build a backup platform during complete failure of internet based communication system. ACTIVEHAMS ACTIVITIES on 2018 -Mock Drills 1. KMML Chemical Disaster Mock Drill , Chavara Kollam Communication Co-
Ordination during the chemical disaster mock drill at Kerala Metals and Mineral Kollam. 2. Tsunami Mock Drill at Kollam : Communication support to district authorities during this mock drill. International Film Festival Kerala Around 20 volunteers including nine operators are on active duty across all nine theatre complexes screening the movies this year. The services offered by AARS-KL are entirely free of charges. This is also the first time that ham radio volunteers are being part of IFFK. Kerala Flood The rescue operations were conducted by the Armed forces, NDRF, State Police and Fire force and Civil volunteers, but the total breakdown of networks and telecommunication had completely hindered the rescue missions. The people who were trapped in their house was not able to contact anyone, even if they did the person they contact cannot pass the messages to any of the control room/rescue team due to network failure. That is the situation where the importance of Wireless Communication increases. Even though mobile phone and all the wired communication broke down, Ham Radio works smoothly. Our team had proven this effectively to the Kerala administration. The most notable place of Kerala flood was CHENGANNUR of Alleppy District. Total electrical failure and communication was the main problem there because of the fast rising water. Our team deployed a Wireless operation for search and rescue mission by assisting Kerala Fire Force and Odisha Fire rescue team. ARRS-KL is the CRV of Kerala Fire force. The mission had eased the rescue missions by us, providing intercommunication of rescue teams and administrative officers. Cyclone GAJA As per the request from district authorities Cuddallore, we were capable to mobilize our manpower and communication equipment with in the timeline from Kollam to Cuddallore district. We have setup 5 shelter stations during cyclone Gaja disaster.we have contributed our communication support to Cuddallore Collectorate in Tamil Nadu on November 2018. This was a first Inter state operation by a ham radio society from Kerala. This event was well appreciated by Tamil Nadu Government.
