MISSION REPORT- 2018 EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION BY ARRS KERALA KERALA FLOODS ABOUT AARS-KL We represent “ACTIVE HAMS AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY (AARS-KL), a Govt registered society founded by a group of radio amateurs from Kerala. During this flood disaster we have contributed our communication support and volunteer services (CRV) In association with Fire & Rescue Services Kollam. We formally adopted our constitution on 2nd of May 2018. Whenever 'normal' communications go out, we are ready to use our radios to provide emergency communication services to their communities. Ham Radio possesses a vast potential to serve as an alternative communication channel, should the mainstream channels breakdown during disasters

INTRODUCTION Kerala floods were a calamity of severe nature for all practical purposes. It had devastated the entire Kerala. Most of the Northern and central part of the Kerala were completely underwater. All most all citizens of Kerala had lost everything. Reliefs camps were set up on all districts providing shelter for all human beings and animals. Those camps were organized by administration of districts respectively. Sudden and Attentive action of the both Central and State government was really appreciable. The rescue operations were conducted by the Armed forces, NDRF, State Police and Fire force and Civil volunteers, but the total breakdown of networks and telecommunication had completely hindered the rescue missions. The people who were trapped in their house was not able to contact anyone, even if they did the person they contact cannot pass the messages to any of the control room/rescue team due to network failure. That is the situation where the importance of Wireless Communication increases. Even though mobile phone and all the wired communication broke down, Ham Radio works smoothly. Our team ARRS Kerala (Active Amateur Radio Society) had proven this effectively to the Kerala administration. The organization had promoting Ham radio activities including scientific research, emergency response and education. The most notable place of Kerala flood was CHENGANNUR of Alleppy District. Total electrical failure and communication was the main problem there because of the fast rising water. Our team deployed a

Wireless operation for search and rescue mission by assisting Kerala Fire Force and Odisha Fire rescue team. ARRS-KL is the CRV of Kerala Fire force. The mission had eased the rescue missions by us, providing intercommunication of rescue teams and administrative officers. The CRV (Community Rescue Volunteer) Operation of Chengannur was coordinated by the District fire officer Mr.Hari Kumar. The Wireless control station was managed by Nishant(VU3MOE) and active hams Roy(VU3ROO),Mathew Kunju Kunju (VU2MTU),Rajagopal(VU2RDL), Biju S(VU3WEO), Nandu Vinoban(VU3UKF) and Abhijith(SWL), Alen(SWL),Sidharth(SWL) participated in the operations. We have achieved this mission with VHF and Citizen Band radio as well as Online Social Media Services.
