A Place to Call Home

Story by Tyler Francke • Photos courtesy the Canby Historical Society

I

t all began with berries. The land we now call Canby, situated atop a grassy plateau above the Willamette and Molalla rivers, was already open and practically clear of trees when white settlers first started to arrive in the mid-1800s. They called it a “prairie,” Baker Prairie to be exact, probably named after James Baker, also known as “Big Jim” and “Honest Jim,” who settled north of town in 1838, although it may also have been Micajah Baker, a trapper who frequented the area in 1813 and 1814. Jim Baker was one of the first white men to live in Oregon, a frontiersman, trapper, hunter, fur trader, explorer, army scout, interpreter, soldier, territorial militia officer, rancher, mine owner, toll keeper, mountain man and one of the most colorful figures of the old West. He married an Indian woman, and they operated a huge farm in what is now north Canby. Soon after Baker came Philander and Anna Green Lee, who crossed the Oregon Trail in 1847, part of a mass family migration of Lees and Greens. Philander, who was 45 when he braved the Trail, and Anna, who was 40, began and ended the journey with seven

children, but not the same seven. Their son, Jason, died in Iowa, and another, Albert, was born along the way. As the Lees’ wagon train passed the summit of the Blue Mountains, they received a note from two missionaries near Walla Walla, Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, asking for flour. When they met the Whitmans later, the missionaries told the Lees that the Cayuse Indians, to whom they were attempting to minister, were “becoming unfriendly.” Only four weeks later, the Whitmans and 11 others were killed by the Cayuse in the infamous Whitman massacre, which would spark the Cayuse War. In the fall of 1848, the Lees finally arrived in Canby, though it would be decades before anyone called it that. They bought squatters’ rights to some land beside a spring-fed stream now known as Highway 99E. In 1850, the Lees gained title to their 647 acres through the Donation Land Claim Act, which brought many more settlers over the Oregon Trail. When the Oregon & California Railroad began to push through the Willamette Valley in 1870, Lee seized the opportunity to sell 111 acres of his claim to the

railroad for a 24-block city. Lee received $2,960. It was also in 1870 that the town’s first plat was filed — not under the name “Baker Prairie,” but “Canby,” in honor of Gen. Edward Canby, a Civil War hero who never set foot in the town. It’s generally accepted that his close friend and confidant, a roguish enterpriser named Ben Holladay, who was also the then-president of the O&C Railroad, pulled strings to have the new town named after his pal. The Lees would continue to make their mark on Canby’s early history for decades to come. Philander and Anna’s son Heman A. Lee was Canby’s first mayor. Their son Albert — the one born on the Oregon Trail — would keep his rambling ways, serving as the area’s railroad agent when the trains started arriving in 1873. He was also one of Canby’s first merchants, opening the town’s first general store, Roork & Lee, with his brother-in-law in 1871. Ora Lee Cattley, daughter of Heman and Eda Lee, was the first queen of the Clackamas County Fair, first woman elected the Canby Union High School Board and Canby’s head librarian for many years. Her cousin, Millard Jerome Lee — always called “M.J.” because he didn’t like his first name — would also come to be known as “Mr. Canby.” A son of Albert, M.J. Lee was a dynamo who almost singlehandedly spurred much of the town’s early growth. He ran the first coach service between Canby and Oregon City, long before Highway 99E was even thought of. In 1909, he dug a canal to serve the city’s first power plant, which was operated by a waterwheel on the Molalla River. The flow ultimately proved too weak, and the plant failed, though its 30-inch concrete walls would stand for 70 years — even resisting an attempt to demolish it by 200 sticks of dynamite in 1959. He published the city’s first newspaper, the Clackamas County News, and helped organized the its first municipal water system. He ran a succesful irrigation company and installed systems throughout

eastern Oregon and Washington. He also took mining expeditions to California and Alaska. He served as a state representative and was on just about every city and county board you could serve on at some point in his life. In his earlier years, he had been a champion cyclist, winning scores of races across the Pacific Northwest. As a boy, he won bets bicycling from Canby to Portland and back. Suffering from cancer, he was known to still take his daily bicycle trip into town up until the day before he died, at age 78. What is Rotary?

Rotary joins leaders from all continents, cultures, and occupations. We exchange ideas, bringing out expertise and diverse perspectives to help solve some of the world's toughest problems. And we take actions to bring lasting change to our communities around the world. The Rotary motto is "Service Above Self" which means unselfish volunteer service. Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today's most pressing challenges. Being a member is an opportunity to take action to make a difference, and it brings personal rewards and lifelong friendships in the process.

Club Officers

Ron Yarbrough, President Robert "Cash" McCall, President-Elect Teresa Sasse, Vice President Betty Mumm, Secretary Ruth Brito, Treasurer Kathleen Jordan, Immediate Past President

Upcoming Projects: March - April: "Reading Rotarians" literacy project with students grades K through 3rd at Lee and Trost Elementary Schools in Canby. May: Postal Carriers Food Drive supported by Canby Rotarians Saturday, July 27: 3-on-3 Nothing-But-Net basketball tournament at Wait Park in Canby. Canby Rotary 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

The Canby Rotary Club 3-on-3 basketball tournament was started in 1999 with a focus on the celebration of athleticism, fair play, and community involvement. The tournament continues today because of the support of teams, sponsors, and the financial support of community businesses and organizations. There were 96 teams who played in the 3-on-3 style tournament also dubbed "nothing but net" for the hope of all basketball players to throw the perfect toss that touches nothing on its way to a score but the net as it swishes down through on into the hands of the referee. The tournament serves youth in our area and raises funds used to support efforts of local food banks, The Canby Center, Clackamas County Junior Livestock Auction, Boy Scout service projects, Canby Kiwanis food and toy drive, Independence Day fireworks display, Slice of Summer performances in Wait Park, and disaster relief in the United States and around the world.

Rotarian Charlie Stinson Canby Rotarian Charlie Stinson is a registered Petroleum Engineer with over 39 years of experience in the natural gas and gas storage industries. The majority of his career has been in technical, management, and senior management roles for NW Natural and its subsidiaries involving the exploration and development of natural gas reserves and underground gas storage projects in the western United States and Canada. Charlie was instrumental in the development of underground storage in the Mist Gas Field in Oregon and the Gill Ranch Field in California. Charlie is a respected leader in the community who inspires others to contribute to the well-being of youth and families in Canby. He was the President of the Rotary Club of Canby in 1993-1994. He is the current President of the Canby Rotary Foundation, has served on the Board of Directors of the Canby Educational Foundation for the past twelve years, serves on the Board of Directors of The Canby Center, and is the Treasurer of the Clackamas Federal Credit Union Board of Directors. Charlie's distinguished record of professional and community service earned him the Rotarian of the Year award in 2017. Thank you, Charlie, for all that you do.
