A group of Bill Brown’s buckaroos with a full corral of wild horses at Hardin in 1904.

The Horse King H By Tyler Francke, Canby Now Podcast

e was a “bad man” from Texas by the name of John Overstreet, and he was grazing his sheep where they didn’t belong. Overstreet had the misfortune of trespassing onto a meadow owned by three of the Brown brothers, who had originally settled in New Era between Canby and Oregon City, before looking east. Two would eventually return. Of the three, the eldest was William Walter, better known as W. W. or simply Bill, and especially “Old Bill” in his later years. “Tall and gaunt as a wind-whipped juniper tree” and “tougher than sun-tanned rawhide,” he was destined to become a legend — one of the most colorful figures in eastern Oregon and, at one time, one of the richest men in the Pacific Northwest. Newspapers would dub him the “Horse King of the West” and the “Millionaire Horse King.” But on this day, he was just William Brown, a 31-year-old former schoolteacher. He was the third

of seven children, born in Wisconsin to a family of English immigrants. Four years earlier, he had bought an equal share in a flock of 1,000 sheep with his two younger brothers, Robert and George Henry (more on him later). The brothers had driven their flock from the Willamette Valley to Harney County. They laid claim to a homestead on the east slope of Wagontire Mountain, where they built a small rustic cabin with a dirt floor and no windows whatsoever. Sheep was a growth industry in the 1880s, and the brothers rapidly expanded their herd and their territory by buying up neighboring properties with water sources. By the mid-1880s, they were producing 32,000 pounds (15,000 kg) of wool per year. It was in 1886 that John Overstreet stumbled across their path. Bill Brown warned Overstreet that he was trespassing. But Overstreet refused to move along, and the two men grabbed their guns.

A shootout ensued. Overstreet lost. Bill reported the incident to the justice of the peace in nearby Silver Lake. The grand jury refused to return an indictment, citing self-defense. This was untamed country. Ranchers faced threats not only from their neighbors, but also Mother Nature. Bears and mountain lions were an ever-present danger. Even the weather could be deadly. In 1889, the brothers lost 95 percent of their herds — which by then had grown to more than 10,000 — during an especially long and brutal winter. It was what they called a “double winter,” one that would start in October and seem done by February, only to have new snow come and set in again. Only 500 of the Browns’ flock survived, and Robert and George moved back to the Canby area in search of greener pastures. Literally. Actually, George seems to have soured on the sheep business altogether. He became a producer of a heartier stock — the potato. He quickly gained the reputation of a pioneer in the cultivation of Oregon spuds, and one of the first to export the commodity to other states via carload. Whether George was gifted with an especially verdant green thumb, or there was simply something special in the soils of his New Era farm, we’ll never

know, but he regularly reported harvesting more than 200 bushels per acre throughout the early 1900s — double the average yield in those days. Like his brother — who hadn’t yet earned his royal nickname — George was soon known as the “Potato King of Clackamas County,” and potatoes became one of Canby’s main agricultural exports. The Canby Ferry, trundling slowly across the Willamette laden with tons of stuffed potato sacks, was a common sight in those days, and George was a very wealthy man. His reported income of $40,000 in 1917 would be the equivalent of somewhere north of $800,000 today. In 1927, he donated 30 acres of his family’s land to become the site of the new Canby Union High School, which opened the following year. Though it would later be torn down, the new high school sits on the same land originally donated by the Brown family. He had five children and became president of the Bank of Commerce in his later years, serving as chairman of its board of directors until his death in 1930. Meanwhile, back in eastern Oregon, Bill Brown was not slouching either. From the 500-some sheep that had survived the winter of 1889, he gradually rebuilt his sheep operation to over 22,000 animals.

In 1892, Bill began buying small horse herds from his neighbors, usually for around $3 to $10 a head. Though his sheep operation was larger, and the sheep were always his favorite, it was his vast herds of wild horses that he would come to be known for. Chasing and gathering wild horses was tricky business. It required men who knew horses intuitively, better even than the horses knew themselves. Bill’s buckaroos also had to know the land, and had to ride horses that were as fearless and fleet-footed as the stallions they aimed to capture. But it was also very lucrative for those who could capitalize on the military needs of the early 20th century, and Bill Brown was one of the first documented defense contractors in U.S. history. He made a killing, though not literally, in the Spanish-American War of 1898. He sold thousands of horses to the U.S. Army, at shrewdly high mark-ups: $80 to $100 each. Even after the war ended, he continued to sell thousands of horses to the army each year. Foreign powers, like the United Kingdom, also sent agents to central Oregon to purchase stock from Old Bill. Bill was an odd character, especially for the Wild West. He never drank. He never swore. He never lied. He hated tobacco. And though he owned thousands of horses, he preferred to walk most of the time. It was said that he thought nothing of a 30-mile hike after supper, and he regularly trekked the 20 miles that separated his two main ranches. He was “one of the world’s worst bookkeepers,” according to one newspaper report. Most of his numbers on employees, stock and inventory were kept nowhere but in his own head. He often wrote and signed “checks” on anything he might have handy — butcher paper, wrapping paper, tin can labels, scraps of newspaper and even bark chips. Bill was so well-known for this habit that any bank in central or eastern Oregon would honor these crude I.O.U.s, even for amounts as high as $10,000. But he could spare such eccentricities. His annual income in those days, as near as anyone could tell, was $140,000 — a sum worth several million today. With his lands, animals and other operations, I would roughly estimate his net worth at somewhere in the neighborhood of $40 million in today’s dollars. A former schoolteacher in California (where he had earned $40 a month), he was a staunch supporter of education, and he gave generous gifts, never less than $5,000, to the College of Puget Sound, seminaries

in Pendleton and San Francisco and several other educational institutions. He gave $30,000 to Willamette University, and when his niece was accepted to the University of Oregon, he wrote U of O a check for $25,000 — probably on the back of a football program. Sadly, the “Bill Brown Empire,” as it was commonly known, was not to last. Bill was slow to adjust to the rise of the gas-powered automobile following the end of World War I, and he maintained his large herds and employees even after the market for horses as a means of transportation had all but disappeared. In 1935, he was forced to mortgage his property and become a resident of the Methodist Old People’s Home in Salem — a charitable institution that he had helped start with a $10,000 gift 25 years earlier. He died in 1941, 85 years old and completely penniless. Old Bill was buried in the Brown family plot at Zion Memorial Cemetery in Canby, along with his parents and most of his brothers and sisters. If you’d like to hear more cool stories from Canby’s history, as well as local news, sports, interesting conversations and more, subscribe to the Canby Now Podcast, which can be found on every major podcast outlet, or visit canbynowpod.com.

"Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive The Canby Rotary Club partnered with local letter carriers and The Canby Center to help "Stamp Out Hunger" in our community in May. The 8820 pounds of food donated by local citizens was collected by postal workers on May 11. The many, many bags of food were delivered to The Canby Center the same day. Canby Rotarians sorted all of the cans and boxes of non-perishable food into boxes labeled for stage at The Canby Center. Center Director Ray Keen expressed thanks to donors and volunteers for the food that will be very much appreciated by those families in our community who will receive the food over the next few months. The value of the donated food is estimated to be about $14,750, but the lovve given with the food is invaluable. Community Service projects are one of the way Canby Rotarians take action to make a difference in our world. In June 2019, Canby Rotary Foundation awarded 27 scholarships totaling $32,500 for the coming school year. Since 2000, the CRF has awarded 310 scholarships totaling over $280,000.

Rotarians Play Golf and Work to Eradicate Polio Rotarians and their worldwide partners have worked to eradicate the disease of polio since 1985. In fact, since starting this campaign, polio has decreased by 99.9 percent. Only three countries continue to record low-level transmission of the wild poliovirus including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. Rotary's vision is "to immunize all of the world's children against polio". Canby Rotarians and their family members played golf on May 31 with a goal of sharing fellowship and raising at least $1,000 toward the immunization of children against polio. These twenty-five people did meet their goal by raising more than $2500 toward the Polio Plus worldwide effort to eradicate polio. Some members used vintage clubs, some played golf for the first time, and all had a great time while doing good for the world's children.

UPCOMING PROJECTS: August 13 - 17: Rotarians are volunteer greeters and ticket collectors at the Clackamas County Fair.

Saturday, August 24: Canby Cruise-In car show and BBQ. Several hundred owners show their prized vehicles in and around Wait Park in Canby.

Club Officers Saturday, September 21: Canby Rotary dinner and auction to raise funds for first responders in our community.

THE CHAMBER CORNER

AUG-SEPT 2019

Good day, Canby, Kyle Lang from the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce here. We are firmly in the midst of summer festivities at the Chamber, and we’ve got a lot that the community should know about. First, are you familiar with First Thursday? This series of events is thrown in partnership with the City of Canby to bring fun events to our downtown on the first Thursday of every month. August’s theme is “The Garden Spot” but what we are really excited about is September’s First Thursday event. The Canby Area Chamber is partnering with Canby High School to throw a School Year Preview Party in the Antonia Ballroom above the Backstop Bar & Grill to give residents a chance to learn about high school programs. For more information, contact us at the Chamber offices. Second, we have unveiled Canby Area Chamber’s next travel opportunity. The Chamber is going to the French Riviera! This 9-day trip will cover the French Mediterranean and includes 11 meals. Taste your way through Nice, Cannes, Monaco, Monte Carlo, St. Tropez and more! We’ve got informational packets available at the Chamber office if you would like to explore this unique opportunity that departs in November 2020.

ONGOING EVENTS: CHAMBER LUNCHEON Featuring different business-related speakers First Tuesday of every month. 11:30 am – 1 pm GOOD MORNING CANBY Hosted at different locations every month. 2nd Thursday of every month. 7:45am – 9 am AFTER HOUR Hosted at different locations every month. 4th Thursday of every month. 5pm – 6:30 pm

We’ve got a lot more going on, so check in with us often as we always have something cooking on the back burner. As we say here at the Chamber, “We are building a better community by helping people build better businesses.” If you are a local business owner who would like to join the chamber, email us at chamber@canbyareachamber.org for more information. Enjoy the rest of your summer, Kyle Lang Executive Director Canby Area Chamber of Commerce www.canbyareachamber.com 503-266-4600
